  • In 2015, 17 percent of U.S. newlyweds had a spouse of a different race or ethnicity. That’s roughly a fivefold increase since 1967, when the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Loving v. Virginia made interracial marriage legal.

Changing the law was a start-but it didn’t “necessarily do anything to change people’s minds,” says Syracuse University law professor Kevin Noble Maillard, who writes frequently about intermarriage. Partners of different races or ethnicities are nothing new, he notes: “But it’s very different when there’s public recognition of these relationships and when they become representations of regular families-when they’re the people in the Cheerios commercial.”
We sat down with 17 couples from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area to talk about their experiences of being in a marriage that crosses racial or ethnic lines and to learn about their hopes for the future.
Read the full April 2018 article on intermarriage, “The Many Colors of Matrimony,” and check out the entire National Geographic issue on race.

For some of these interracial couples, the criticism came from parents and other close family members. What do you think are some ways to foster tolerance and understanding when it comes to interracial relationships?

It's curious how interracial relationships were generally considered taboo in Western culture (and many other cultures as well) for millennia, while in the past five years or so the media has suddenly started championing them quite loudly. The truth, however, may actually be that there was some wisdom in that longstanding taboo after all. A pretty sizable body of evidence suggests that extreme exogamy (i.e., racial intermixing) can prove as problematic and destructive in its own way as extreme endogamy (i.e., incest) in its way. Of course, in some circles it's almost become de rigueur to label any such assertion politically incorrect, but there's a lot of scientific data out there that would suggest interracial relationships have a negative net result, not only for the individuals involved, but also for their offspring and for human culture in general. So, to foster tolerance and understanding of those who oppose the erosion of distinct races and cultures, here are two major reasons why racial mixing might not be such a good thing after all (please forgive any lengthiness in what follows, but I'm personally against the Twitterization of speech, where all ideas have to be boiled down to a sentence or two in order to appease people's ever-shortening attention span).
      1. Interbreeding reduces genetic distinctiveness: Whites, blacks, Asians, Pacific Islanders, etc., have spent most of the past 100,000 years, give or take, in relative isolation. During that time, they've evolved genetic differences that run much deeper than mere facial features or skin color. How else can one explain the glaring differences between races when it comes to things like susceptibility to disease, academic success, crime rates, athletic prowess, etc.? Whites for the most part have evolved lactose tolerance, have a lower likelihood of developing diabetes, excel at upper body sports like weight-lifting and swimming, etc. Asians, by contrast, suffer from lactose intolerance among other ailments, have greater abilities in math according to academic aptitude tests, a more peaceable disposition given lower violent crime statistics in Asian countries, as well as a tendency to excel in gymnastic exercise. Blacks, on the other hand, typically do well at sports involving running, whether short distances (West Africans) or long distances (East Africans), suffer from lactose intolerance in addition to a higher rate of diabetes and other diseases, score significantly lower on intelligence tests, and exhibit a greater tendency to violent crime. That's not to say that there aren't lots of white people who are lactose tolerant, for example, or that every Asian person will score high on math tests while every black person will score low, but on average those are clear trends among the races as a whole -- statistically incontrovertible facts, if you bother to look them up. Of course, nurture also plays a big role in these differences, not just nature, but it would be naive to think that all races are totally equal under the skin and that their genetic makeup has nothing to do with these inequalities. The data just don't support that view.
Far from being a bad thing, though, racial differences are usually good. Each race, after all, has over thousands of years gradually evolved into a different sub-species adapted to a specific environment. Each race didn't have enough time to evolve into an entirely different species, of course, since Asians, blacks and whites can all interbreed (although, on a side note, anthropologists generally regard Neanderthals as a different species from Homo sapiens sapiens despite the fact they were able to interbreed with humans thousands of years ago). But modern races have obviously grown better at some things than others, and may have lost other abilities that were not as needful. When races mix, however, millennia of evolutionary advances and biological distinctiveness is lost, in much the same way as the rainbow of colors on a painter's palette is lost when mixed together -- afterwards all that remains of the dozens of different hues is a homogeneous, dull brown. Naturally, some might argue that mixing different races widens gene pools and introduces hybrid rigor, and in some cases that may be true. But as a general rule, mixing races is a diluting of genomic distinctiveness and rarity, with specialized, recessive traits (such as blue eyes, blonde hair, high intelligence in music, mechanics, math, etc.) likely to become even rarer within the overall population as a result. Indiscriminate racial mixing is likely to be bad for a population in the same way as inbreeding is bad for a population, since brother breeding with sister or cousin mating with cousin amplifies rare and recessive traits, including genetic diseases, while racial mixing has the opposite effect, leveling out uniqueness and engendering uniformity and mediocrity. Too much genetic diversity can prove just as bad as too little. Just imagine if, to use another analogy, dog breeders had simply allowed all dogs to mate indiscriminately: there would be no distinct and beautiful breeds left anymore, and only mutts that look and behave more or less the same as every other mutt would remain. Some of the genetic diseases that beset certain breeds would vanish, but so would the special skills, character, and beauty of the different breeds. This isn't to say that humans should be bred like eugenic animals, with great musicians being paired off with other great musicians in the hopes of producing even better musicians, or gray-eyed platinum blondes breeding with their like in order to keep those recessive traits alive and well, but neither does it mean the reverse should be encouraged or particularly respected.
      2. Interbreeding also dilutes cultural differences: When cultures collide, the collision can provoke a mutually enriching exchange of knowledge and customs. It can, however, also prove utterly destructive to one or even both of the cultures in question. The persistent spread of the English language and Anglo-American culture across the globe, for example, has severely endangered many other cultures' native tongues and unique customs. It's a bit staggering to see even hunter-gatherers in the Amazon or herders on the African savannah wearing Nike t-shirts, carrying cell phones, or singing Lady Gaga songs. Again, without going into too much detail, it's a disturbing case of cultural homogenization -- like watching an endangered species slowly go extinct. Hopefully, unique customs, languages, and knowledge will get rescued from oblivion by ethnographers or other recorders of human behavior, but even a library of ethnographic books and recordings is not the same thing as a living culture thriving on its own.
In much the same way, interracial relationships steadily erode away at cultural heritage. Even among white Europeans, there are people who are an eighth Dutch, an eighth Russian, an eighth Romanian, and so on, which may be fine and good enough for the person in question, but nevertheless diminishes their chances of benefiting from a special cultural tradition with a different way of seeing the world, a different way of speaking, a different way of living. People of mixed background increasingly grow up without a real culture to nourish them, instead having to content themselves with vapid and generic global pop culture. They're left roaming, rudderless and alienated, among a clutter of conflicting cultures like an aimless window-shopper, struggling to find direction, focus, values, or a sense of identity to call their own.
The final irony in this debate is that the very people who so loudly applaud diversity are nevertheless undermining it by advocating for a global uniculture where everyone basically ends up looking, thinking, and acting the same as everyone else. A further irony is how these same people who lionize diversity don't actually seem to value diversity of opinion or ideology very much, as is clear from their all too frequent desire to label as a thoughtcrime anything that doesn't jibe with their particular set of beliefs, even when hard scientific data contradicts them.

you try to sepparate the mind / cognitive capacity from the rest of the body as its somehow not biological, so not an effect of evolution.
No, totally wrong. Every type of environment has different evolutionary pressures.
      "skin tone"
Its not a skin tone . . its a evolutionary adaptation to high uv, descendants are more likely to survive in warm climates. The skin is specialised to certain conditions.
Is it so hard to imagine the same can happen to intelligence? An environment that has multiple seasons with harsh winters is a pressure for the humans living in that area to plan forward. To create a model of the future and works towards achieving it (as farming crops and conserving them for the winter), this is a pressure for IQ, seeing that the humans that would not plan forward would just die out and not pass along their genes.
This is only one of the many scenarios for clear radical differences on how the different types human races evolved.
There is a reason why olympic long distance runners are almost always Ethiopians (black people in general overrepresent sports, even in white countries), there is a clear genetic advantage. Look at the average IQ differences between races, clear distinctions there aswell. Dont be a science denier, the data is there.

    • @therambler3713

Cin3 The problem is when people make the presupposition that race is all that defines a person, that my friend is not only unscientific but it is also the catalyst of many bad things that have happened in the past.
Ethiopians are not just good at long distance running because of their genes,if you do the research you'll see these people also practice cultural norms and live in an environment that allows them excel at distance running.

So beautiful. It's great that NatGeo, who has covered the ENTIRE WORLD for over 100 years, is doing this study and series. I don't know anyone who did not learn about other cultures from reading a Nat Geo magazine as a kid. DNA testing and genetic genealogy really has taught me, as an American descendant of the Atlantic Slave Trade, color is truly "skin deep"; my mother's dna touches every continent,WOW! Yet the world define her as "Black" or "African". I hate societies have taught so many to understand the Human existence by marginalizing our natural cognitive way of thinking; with centuries of strict codes, ideologies, customs, heritages, traditions, and religions that shelter us from experiencing diversity, and how diversity helps us better understand humanity.

Nobody has ever mentioned the novelty of this, parents, friends, workmates etc everyone just thinks its normal. But perhaps it's because I live in London where if anything marrying inside your race is becoming the novel thing to do...

There are bridges to cross in an interracial relationship. Fundamentally one is language, once that gap is filled it is hard to alienate a person or consider them as someone else. But true, as we rush to globalization things like this is bound to happen. Racial differences shouldn't matter much at all.
