Their designs are fire if they could just implement using better metals and heat treats theyd probably be making some legit cool stuff
FACTS
Yup, they use recycled mild steel and give it a poor or no heat treatment. Then their knives are sold to the ignorant, often at jacked up prices by unscrupulous retailers, who often claim to be the makers. If they did use better, more appropriate knife steels and do decent heat treatments, their knives would be worth buying. Otherwise their craftsmanship is going to waste.
Even with much of their existing metal, they can still create a decent edge with better heat treatment, and doing basic tests of the steels hardness before hand.
@@muhammedk470 Why go to all the trouble of making a good knife with a decent heat treatment? They crank their knife-like objects out as quickly and cheaply as possible, and rely on sales to the ignorant who buy into the myth of "the lost art of Damascus" and the steel having some magical qualities. I've actually seen guys who imports batches of these knives trying to talk customers at gun shows into buying them with the lie that they have a friend who traveled to the middle east and learned the secret, lost method to make "real damascus" steel and he makes them in is home shop. Buyer beware and be suspicious of anything coming out of Pakistan. I have a friend who's wife fell for it and bought a beautiful damascus cleaver for him as a present. He loved the think and came to me later asking if I would put a good edge on it. I did the best I could and tried not to be too harsh when told him the reality of what the cleaver was. I think he hung it in his kitchen and told his wife it was too beautiful to use.
Guys just a tip , don’t overheat the steel , especially when grinding , slow down a little bit .
I understand that time is money but overheated steel loses carbon !

I am also wondering why they over heat the metal when grinding. Can it be restored by quenching?
I bought a few of these "Damascus Steel" knives on eBay. The steel used was crappy, heat treat was poor and they wouldn't hold an edge. Seeing how they make them explains it.
when they are shaping the edge the steel got burned.... but the firsrt thing I saw was that when they are making the laminated billet it was overheated... sorry for my english, I´m an argentinian knifemaker hahah

I once bought a damascus knife from a shop just like this.
The Damascus peeled like an onion 🧅 and I could NEVER get a edge on it.
Sounds like it wasn't forge-welded properly.
@@VenturiLifeno shit the guy folded and folded again with no flux, and didnt let time for the grains to grow back. The fact that they had a weld to begin with is impressive. if they used sand, just clean common silica sand, they would have MUCH better welds, and they should also maybe give a second welding pass on their last weld

How does the steel hold up? is it any good? and will it take, and hold a edge good?
@@supertedogpriken Yes they take an edge and work well. They are very stout, 3 - 5mm thick. Honestly I bought them primarily for display as they are VERY ornate. The damascus isn't Japanese or even Chinese quality but it's decent and very affordable. Some are full tang while others are partial or rat tail. Many are offered in stainless if you want a more practical, low maintenance blade.
No flux used? Blades will be unreliable 😁. Really surprised at all the people being impressed by these blades😊
No flux means you simply did not see it applied to the metal.
I doubt they would have ever gotten to the finished product without it.

Im 67 years old and have never seen anyone work so hard in my life. This video shows a room full of craftman that work there butts off and love what they do. I sell knives at a flea market in the USA and would love to have your knives in my shop.

@@megaraitei you've seen at the end there's a pattern right you can see two colours of metal right? One of them is that plate, plus it's a completely different way of doing things if they're planning for an hard edge, this is just for the Damascus look and not for the high carbon hard stell purpose

Yes! I figured this whole "damascus" thing would have run it's course by now. Seems like they could probably aquire some old leaf springs and make some decent, basic carbon steel knives. However, I don't think there would be the same success with the head shops where they sell this junk to stoners.

DECORATION ONLY. Don’t try to rely on these as a survival or bug out must have. Poor quality, I was curious and bought a couple different styles. They don’t hold and edge. Just trying to shave sticks for marshmallows over a fire was kind of pathetic after a couple sticks. I tried different geometry for the sharpness. There are videos of smiths in America trying to figure out the steel. Very strange mix of materials. They don’t heat treat well at all.

Guessing the plate of 'steel' he put in the billet in the beginning was the hard metal, to make the edge. He then folds it into 3, and twist it before flattening it.
That edge is gonna be all over the blade, just not where it should be. lol

@@N3m3sls This isn’t true in all cases, that would technically be a San-mai or core damascus blade. One of the simplest damascus’s you can forge is 1084 and 15n20, which are both hardenable steels suitable for knifemaking.
@@N3m3sls that’s not true at all dude. There’s plenty of stupid shit to criticize in here but that’s not one of them. What you’re describing is San mai, which is basically a metal taco that gets forge welded. It’s a different process from what you’re seeing here and it’s a pain in the balls to do without kerosene and a press.
Hell, watching him using that cutting blade so casually to remove the excess steel gave me the creeps. If he'd have slipped, he'd be picking his nose with his elbow for the rest of his life

I do not know anything about smithing, do no have equipment to make knives, I will buy them and to hell with it does not hold an edge, just bring sharpeners, period. And also help them make a living and if they r injured, that’s life.

In defense of the team whos employment is to make the knives .. I think they are mainly meant for display or collection. One point that is nice .. the "Damascus style" finish is achieved by actually folding different steels together and honestly forging it, ... not painted on like many replicas.

I could only judge this properly if I was at the forge all day. (I've been privileged to be at SEKI for special demos and many other forges where one can see and learn what steps are indeed important and how it is conducted the right way. For sure you know this yourself. Ot was obvious that the metal looked a bit like lava for sure, no arguments there. I'll check your stuff if u have a site yes?

I clicked d this because I've own the knife set that comes in a set of two, one of those knives and a boot knife.
Those two knives are still getting use, I had no idea it was made this well.
Now that I've seen how my knives were made literally by hand, I'm learning all I can. Thank you so much

@@IYKYK97 there’s no excuse for inadequate PPE. Peoples lives are need to be worth more than the $2.00 safety goggles would cost, or the $0.11 a disposable face mask would cost. The government needs to say PPE is a must, and overnight someone close by will offer it for sale. It has to start with the government first

Right? You can tell these are the kind of blades sold at those street side markets and traveling vendors for a dime a dozen. The steel has been scorched and reheated multiple times with proper tempering and I'd wager the second you struck the spine of one of these blades to s flint, one would likely shatter like glass.

Man this is scary.... so many dangerous action that i am amazed there is still someone alive and with his feet or toes or just skin left. Those guys only misses teeth which is the only things kind of protected... Impressive. And good looking final product even if the knofe itself will be extremly poor quality shit metal no idea of tempering, damascus wont have much itegrity, but look cool.
No wonder, not even US or Russia can defeat the Talibans.
It's just like all the other video smithies but with people squatting in sandals, no flux powder, no safety measures and the welder looked like he was preparing a kebab
This makes me think of some of the Frost brand (gas station) knives I've had over the years that were made in Pakistan. Some of them were actually not half bad. The 5" folding hunter was always a favorite. The only problem I had with some of them was the back spring was either missing, or arrived broken in the box. But if you can get one that locks up tight, the blade is usually razor sharp and evenly ground with a mirror polish. I love the way they color their bone handles, blue pick bone being my favorite. The blade says "German Stainless Steel", which probably means 4116, about the lowest grade of Krupp 420 they make. Definitely not the Bos treated Buck 420HC, but would be nice if it was. Still decent for a beater knife under $20.

As a knife maker I can honestly say there are so many things in this video that justifies a $45 crapmascus amazon knife.

@@KC08RAS the first thing that shows poor quality is what has been mentioned, the bar of steel that was inserted likely was high carbon but stance it was inserted cold the likely hood of there being cold shuts is very high. (It’s not a practiced method among reputable bladesmiths) then twisting the bar after it was laminated kills any hope of a durable cutting edge. They also didn’t show tempering which is probably because they know there is no point. Lastly, the finish grinding kept getting way to hot judging by the amount of steam after they were pulling it out of the water. The cutting edge is thin and can reach over 450*f in 2-3 seconds on that kind of grinder.
@@KC08RAS Unfortunately, many people don’t do proper heat treatment or fail to show to viewers, in either case they are defaming real artisans. Assuming the bar he put in between for forging is high carbon steel, he must do
0. NORMALIZING
1. ANNEALING (heating and gradually letting the bar cool in furnace).
2. HARDENING (considering 1095, heat to aus temp 800 degree C)
3. QUENCHING rapidly in water/oil
4. TEMPERING (to decrease hardness to get rid of brittleness).
PS: I’m from Wazirabad, the town where these guys are making knives. I have no intention to discourage them and may be I’ve wrong perceptions about them. I’m also happy to be corrected by someone experienced. :)
Edit: @0:40 heard them talking about a new order for tempering, makes me think they follow HT steps, problem is no explanations from the person who’s recording or maker but I won’t blame.

I got mine for $29.99 was a really nice case for both vertical and horizontal carry. Blows me away when I think that spoiled American employee at most popular favorite company $50 an hour? The one I just got today is 11 inch similar to Bowie. Same handle as you see in the video and the pattern goes horizontally from the nose through the handle but the one on the video here goes from top to bottom of the instrument. That model they built is called a Tracker. Mine is 288 layers! I've never seen a value like it! it's maybe close to getting a diamond for the price of a lump of coal. My hat is off these guys who work so diligently and live in a simple sandstone apartment I Can Only Imagine. Thank you man, although you may never get a chance to read this I hope that you know you've made some enthusiasts very very satisfied!

Ive bought multiple knifes and swords from a.g knifes that i would assume is similar to this . All of them hold an amazingly sharp edge.

The safety precautions are shocking. How can you neglect elementary rules. Of course the machines and equipment are old worn out. You can tell about the quality of a knife only after you test it.

I own a Croco damascus type blade sold from Linder, more than likely from the same country as seen above. It certainly did not lose and edge or delaminate upon use as apposed to abuse (even some sea water usage LOL) , let me remind people that a Falkniven can be delaminated if abused enough or even another high quality Japanese made knife of san mai construction. I also have knives made before my eyes (all day to make them) from a forge in Sumbawa, they are excellent, us "westerners" are not the only ones who can make good knives believe it or not.
half these guys complaining , their knives never looked used I'm not gonna use a Falkniven to do what I use these knifes for. These knifes are great for yard work etc

@@autumn5592 Cost is a factor ,you get what you pay for I am an accomplished flint kapped so I can pretty much make an edge from nothing.I don't need a knife that cost over 100$ to whittle a stick or cut a rope that's a waste of my time because for me to make a 100$ takes my time and I'd rather spend less on a knife that I might have to sharpen a little more and have some beer money left over. I see your point. But in the end both will cut regardless of how fancy the steel or heat treat is. My ancestors did more with less.example all these Malaysians doing these awesome builds with handmade no name tools. If you will do it will do.

Just one thing confused me and made question in my mind , they use water for cooling after any heat , and in steel making job , soecially in knife making ,nits not good .
I offer these brothers , for making best quality have using oil to cooling not water.
The ones hwanna get my mean , go and study about . Bybusing water the quality get down and any steel will be weaker. But its cheaper than using oil !! Just it. Make best quality , then costomer be ready to pay better for your produce .

Sadly, my guess is on that the company doesn't give a crap about the workers' safety or well-being. Most likely there is no insurance at all.. The wages are a joke too, as the factory is basically a "sweatshop". These workers surely deserve better

The big knives like the swords were used by Burmies Monks in killing thousands of Rohingias people. They used exacly the same big sword-like knife. They should not be allowed to make these type of knives and swords. I don't know which country people are these; most probably India, Bangladesh or Burma. I disliked it. You cannot have a factory like this in USA, CAnada, UK, and Western Europe. It is illegal to run a factory like this without licensing. I see a child (10-12 years) working there. Shame on you!

Goin threw all that trouble to just slap it all togather with some tac welds and a prayer! Woulda been better off to just cut it out of one peace of good metal like 1080 an heat an quinch it and taaaddaaa! Thats disapointing ;( but i will say what impressed me the most out of theses type vids.. not a single petson is sitting in a chair or useing a table!!! Lol my back an knees would be dead! So bravo!!! Lol

The vast majority of people watching this are worried about the workers' safety. The steel-making process is not optimal either, but that's not the most important thing here
It's a very wasteful way of making a knife. They constantly need to remove loads of excess material steel and wood by grinding it off. Just look at the amount of sandpaper grinding belts they need for just one knife.
Like wood turning, it's just how it is. It's craft passed throughout generations. With new tech there's cast iron but also compromise on the end product.
That's the way it's done with pattern welded steel, you can't forge the knife and edge to shape or you will not get a nice looking pattern.
Mindblowing are the bad working conditions.
Maybe this technique was mindblowing 1000 years ago. ;))

Being a retired Custom Knife Maker with over 47 years of experience, I can tell you now, there was nothing mind-blowing about what they were doing other than missing a few basic steps. No flux used in the v folds leads to inclusions in the blade. Very poorly made blades. It may look good to the uninitiated, but these are highly inferior blades. And forging and welding in open toe's sandals? Incredibly stupid. Third world at its worst.
I once saw a vid of an Iraqi fighter (group of same) who found an artillery shell and wanted to use it for their own used. To find out if it was a dud or not, they began hitting it on the nose with a big stick. Well, it wasn't a dud. They were all awarded with martyrdom instantly. These guys are operating with the same mentality. Pitiful!

If you are that good, when folding it with that heat you don't need flux, the hammering with that power removes most inclusions, you're also not the real thing.

Those guys working on the grinding equipment with their arms and legs just draped around the machines gave me the willies. I wonder how many have had their fingers or clothes pulled into the belts or wheels?

So the heat treating must be a proprietary secret, or are those massive spark showers flying off during bevel grinding considered the heat treat?
I've always wondered how to heat treat rotted Tata leaf springs and old shipping containers, so I really hope someone is able to provide an answer!
heat to critical temp. At its critical temp steel is no longer magnetic. Quench in peanut oil. Temper at 240 or to a straw colour . Sharpen.

@@nainitalism some kinds of steel can be heat treated, some can not, no matter what you do. Most rebar, for example, can not. It´s about the crystal structure, and depends on carbon content and alloy composition.

Leaf springs can be heat treated. Though I have never used it.
