    I have 05 Honda Civic LX. It took me almost a whole day to figure out where the leak was coming from thermostat housing. It has two bolts holding it on each side. I finally found the bracket for one of the bolts and that’s what stop the leakage from the housing itself. You have to return that bracket back on that bolt and then tighten it up. It works for me. I went out to the junkyard picked up another. I went to the auto parts store, picked up some seal, it gasket sealer for water pump and thermostat. I did everything stop this leak and the only thing that work was putting that bracket on that inside bolt the lower bolt not the top one lesson well learned.

    I did the new thermostat with seal, did not remove the hose at all or anything else. Did remove the sensor fan (24)mm first. But apart from all that I did not touch anything else and kept the hose up so that nothing else would drop. I did add more coolant once it was all done. Hope my information helps.

    Recently did a head gasket and timing belt job car continued to over heat replaced the switch car would still over heat, fans would only turn on when I would add power to them I ended up replacing the fans and the fans still don’t want to turn on. They only turn on when I give them power all my fuses and relays are good I jumped it from the relays and then the switch it self and they worked perfectly fine. Basically at a lost for words and don’t know where else to look or do it takes a while to overheat but it does slowly climb then slowly drop , but again fans never turn on even after replacing them with a new ones and a new fan switch

      I'm glad it could help. Was there a fan problem that led to the switch change? I'm sure you made sure the coolant was topped off. I'm also sure that you are using coolant and not water like some people like to do. Here's a list of things that can cause overheating on Any car....
      1...low or leaking coolant ( very common)
      2...wrong coolant.
      3...stuck closed thermostat( very common ) coolant doesn't circulate efficiently
      4...clogged radiator lines. Coolant doesn't circulate efficiently
      5...slipping water pump(common) coolant doesn't circulate efficiently
      6...Bad radiator cap(very common). Causes pressure to enter the reservoir and create bubbling.
      7...bad or weak radiator or a/c fan(only overheats while stopped)
      8... faulty coolant sensor (not so common)
      9...fuses and relays related to radiator fan and ac fan.
      10... Incorrect refilling of coolant. Quite a few cars have a burp valve to bleed remaining air from the highest point of the cooling system. Look up your specific vehicle on refilling procedures for coolant.
      11... Bad or failing head gasket(not so common) least likely to be the problem but not to be ruled out. Check the exhaust smoke for constant excessive grayish smoke.

    • @Davethemechanic305
      @Davethemechanic305  28 дней назад +1

      The new thermostat will work. The gasket just seals the coolant from leaking out. So if he already did the job and there's no coolant leak then it should be fine

    I don't overheat. My 2002 Civic LX takes about 10 minutes of driving or 15 minutes of idling to fully warm up (when the temp gauge goes in the middle), problem is my heating doesn't work at all until the temp gauge is in the middle, will replacing my thermostat fix it in this case?
    Other people on forum suggested it could be my heater core, but my heat works but only when car is warmed up, whereas the heater core problem would be no heat even AFTER the car is warmed up... Thoughts on what I should fix?

    • @Davethemechanic305
      @Davethemechanic305  2 года назад +1

      Does your engine warm up at the same pace as any other car or does it take longer. If it takes longer the thermostat may be stuck open. But if your car warms up Normally but your heat still takes a while to kick in then you most likely just need to FLUSH the heater core. No need to replace it unless it's leaking or completely blocked (very unlikely)

    i bought an 04 civic with a cracked radiator so i changed it, the cap and also went ahead and put it a new reservoir tank. Now the car runs cold and the only time the gauge gets up to operating temp is if im idling for a bit or driving up hill. Also i notice after drives the coolant in the reservoir tank rises. I dont get excessive smoke out the exhaust, heater works fine and coolant and oil isnt mixing. what can it be? I was thinking maybe last owner took out the thermostat or its stuck open but i dont think thats the issue with my coolant rising in the reservoir tank.

    • @Davethemechanic305
      @Davethemechanic305  8 месяцев назад +1

      It does sound like a thermostat issue. I would just change it and go from there since it's a simple job

  • @jamesmarshall7979

    You didn’t put any gasket material back on the housing? You scraped it off, but didn’t appear to put any back on? Won’t it leak?

    • @Davethemechanic305
      @Davethemechanic305  2 года назад

      There is a rubber gasket. It goes on the outside of the thermostat to create the seal. I show the gasket in the video when I installed the new thermostat

    My car starts overheating when I’m sitting for too long , do you think this would possibly fix the problem ?

    • @Davethemechanic305
      @Davethemechanic305  2 года назад +1

      It's possible. The first thing you'll want to check is your coolant level when the engine is cool. Make sure your fans are kicking on when the far warms up. If all checks out then I'd look towards the thermostat and then maybe a slipping water pump or semi clogged radiator

  • @fp2231

    Did replacing the thermostat end up solving your overheat? I kept having issues with rad boiling into the over flow bottle and never returns to radiator.

    • @C-Fan_Moto
      @C-Fan_Moto 3 года назад +3

      I have the same problem. During longer highway driving the coolant is thrown to reservoir and doesn't go back to radiator. I tried different radiator caps without success. I get by with this problem by putting back coolant from reservoir to radiator (on cold engine!) with use of syringe with tube. Now I am going to change thermostat. Mine gives clicking sound when I press the tube near it on cold engine. I think it should not click. I also think about cleaning the radiator and whole cooling system. The last option is the head gasket...

    • @Davethemechanic305
      @Davethemechanic305  3 года назад +1

      Yes it fixed the overheating issue. If your getting coolant or air going into back your reservoir your either overheating or have a bad radiator cap. When your vehicle overheats it build higher than usual PSI in the radiator. The spring in the cap is normally rated to a certain PSI(most radiator caps will be marked with the normal spring pressure). Once the psi goes above the required amount the spring activates like a pressure relief valve that's how you get flow going the wrong way.

      First off thank you for the reply. And I have terrible news. It turns out my engine was cracked. There was exhaust going into the cooling system causing pressure build up. Unfortunately its a goner.

    How would I know if it’s the pump or thermostat? My issue is no hot air blowing out vents and overheating after a long period of idle or when I start to drive it overheats.

    • @Davethemechanic305
      @Davethemechanic305  2 года назад +1

      The first thing I would do is make sure the coolant is actually full all the way to the top when the engine is not hot. Just to confirm there's no leak. One cheap way to check the water pump on some cars is to turn the car on for a quick second with the radiator cap off to see if you get any coolant pushes up or out. Some cars you'll have to take off the upper radiator hose and bump the ignition. Two precautions of course only try it with the engine cold and don't do it in your nice driveway. If you get good flow the it's most likely your thermostat

      Make sure the gasket is seated properly and not pinched.
      clean the seating areas of all debris. Make sure the bolts are tight enough.
      Be sure the leak isn't coming from the hose from a loose hose clamp
