There's Tony Kaye's bandaged broken foot on the cover. He hobbled onto the stage on a stick on the 22nd of December 1970 at the Shrewsbury Tech Christmas Dance at the Music Hall. I was 15 and YES were the first band I saw as an adolescent. That thrill and wonderment never leaves you. I bought the Yes Album as soon as it came out in February and I've still got it!!

Congrats on seeing that show! Sounds like you're a couple of years older than I am, and sadly I didn't get a chance to see them until 1974 when I was old enough to drive and the show wasn't on a school night (Tales world tour).

My first Yes show was also at age 15, it was the Relayer tour. It was the first of 5 I saw. I had wanted to go to the "Tales" show at the Houston Astrodome, but couldn't get there. Accident of birth year....

Oh yeah? First band I ever saw was at the Ambassador Hotel in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The singer was so drunk he fell, threw himself, into the drum kit and then started a fist fight with half the bar. And this was their first song.

@StephenMerchant-up8sg I was brought up in Shrewsbury and had no idea that Yes once played there. However, I was only 6 when they were in Salop. I first saw them at Bingley Hall in 1977 - have been a fan ever since!

This is the album that I fell in love with Yes over, as a result it remains very near and dear to my heart. I'm not sure I'm going to be springing for this set, as lovingly assembled as it is. I'm pretty much over the Steven Wilson remix fad unless he's fixing a recording that had some issues to begin with (like Jethro Tull). That certainly isn't the case here. I'm also far more engaged with vinyl at this stage of my life and have a lifetime of collected LPs. I'm definitely more excited for the Analogue Productions 45 RPM Atlantic 75th Anniversary release on high quality vinyl. Sadly, I won't be getting any of those releases with side-long songs cut in half though! I don't care how good it sounds, if I have to get up and flip an album halfway through Close To The Edge or Supper's Ready, the experience is already _ruined._ That's when I'll stick with 33 1/3 or digital counterparts. For somebody who at best only has a CD of this outstanding album, this looks to be well worth the dosh.

"The YES Album" was in heavy rotation in my High School Art Class when it came out.
Our Art teacher encouraged us to use music to inspire us.
British Blues got played mostly... like John Mayall, Cream, Savoy Brown...also Led Zeppelin (of course), Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath...then we found Pink Floyd and YES....and when "Fragile" came out that was it!

I am looking forward to this! Steven Wilson's multichannel mixes always expand on the stereo soundfield without becoming gimicky or changing the character of the original. His stereo folddowns retain a remarkable amount of the detail that is often hard to pick up on outside of the surround mixes. The fact that he is the go-to mixer for so many of these progressive and rock reissues is well justified.

Mine was just delivered. It has a glaring mistake on it. The background picture with Steve Wilson's liner notes includes Steve Howe and Jon Anderson on stage with another musician on keyboards. It isn't Tony Kaye. It's Patrick Moraz. You can tell by the hair, nose, square chiseled jaw line, clothing and huge array of keyboards. Whomever was in charge of art direction at Rhino is obviously not a YES fan.
I question everyone else's following of Yes as well, including those leaving comments and the You Tuber that did this video.
Obviously, you're either just casual fans or blind or not very bright individuals.
Everything else with this release is awesome.
Reminds me of the Time and a Word cover with Steve Howe on the cover, when Peter Banks was actually on the album.
People who don't know about the band should not be involved in any releases.
    Inexcusable.

One of my all time favorite albums. A masterpiece. But honestly, I see no point in this. Various re-mixes, alternate takes, drafts, rehearsals and unused and unedited material -- it's like hearing mistakes. The album, as experienced, is wonderful partly because all of that stuff was settled on before it was released and whatever wasn't up to snuff got discarded. That's the magic of great art and entertainment. Why mess with it?

Steven doesn't quite mess with the recordings using AI like Martin does. He basically just fine-tunes the mastering/engineering, and cleans up the rough stuff. So I'm not _shocked_ when I listen to songs and they sound completely different (like I Am The Walrus). Seems what most people buy those versions for are the multi-channel discs, which never existed originally. He did screw the pooch with the Dukes Of Stratosphear IMHO, as he "cleaned up" the rough sound of the 60's the boys of XTC worked so hard to put in!

This package looks like a fitting tribute to the album that kicked off what were, IMO the band's peak years ('The Yes Album' through 'Relayer' - not counting all but side 6 of 'Yessongs' which was also pretty great). There's some stiff competition this month from Analogue Productions, with their AAA 2 x 45 rpm of the album, though that's cut from the original master (and mix), so this actually complements the AP release quite nicely.

I like what Steve Wilson has done with Yes, Tull and other remastering but I would need it on vinyl, not CD or bluray. Surround sound is not a factor for me as I only enjoy my music as it was recorded in mono or stereo. Don't want the vinyl but the only other version I can find is a single disc of the SW remix for a whopping £32 on The Evil Zon, which I don't think was part of the this phase. Would have liked to see a disc only version along the lines of the box sets released by Marillion and Jethro Tull, and a better booklet. Even with the vinyl, the asking price of 100 smackers on TEZ is somewhat steep, although it can be had cheaper elsewhere.

Great review of an impressive looking set! I just want to add my two cents on S.W. remixes. As a Jethro Tull fanatic, I'm familiar with what he's done on the Tull albums. Yes, he does impressive work, but I am not a fan. I like those boxed sets mainly for the wonderful books and packaging. As you stated, I think the remixes work well as companions to the original. But having grown up with those originals and knowing them inside out, it's unacceptable to hear different soundstage panning left to right/instruments being put up front when they're not meant to be, etc. Even though he tries to be faithful to the old mix and spirit of the time, and many people really love what he's done, it doesn't work for me. I listen to them out of curiosity: "Wow! I've never heard THAT before!", then pack them away and go on happily listening to the recordings as I know them and love them. I get twitchy when something is "off" from what's embedded in my being.
Cheers from the Hudson Valley NY USA. Keep up the good work!

There's terrible grainy footage online of the band recording GFTO which would definitely benefit from the Peter Jackson magic touch,or an equivalent proggy minded cinematographer, as per the Beatles-'Get Back' that would greatly compliment the fabulous album if rejigged ?

I have The Yes Album in so many versions it's ridiculous. Do I really need this one? Yes...Yes I do.

Nice item and packaged well, but at £100 its far too expensive. It shouldnt be anymore than £70. Jethro Tull have recently brought out Broadstone And The Beast and can be purchased for as little as £62 and includes a lot of outtakes and unreleased demo songs.

I won’t be getting this. It’s just my opinion but I think it’s a money grab. The remastered version I have is just fine. I looked at all the tracks that comes with the set. I don’t need 4 or 5 versions of the same song. If they had a full two hour concert over two discs with more material than just from this album then I would consider it.

I don't like the concept of you have to buy the vinyl and CDs together. Most deluxe editions offer one or the other.

The DEFINITIVE version of the Yes Album? Puts the Deluxe version to shame.
Next up: the TRULY DEFINITIVE version of this album.
Soon to be superseded by the ULTIMATE ABSOLUTELY TRULY HONESTLY DEFINITIVE version of this album.
Soon to be superseded by the COMPLETE SESSIONS AND TOUR box set of this album.

Did you do all that without gloves..... heathen. We won't even go into talking in the same room as it without a mask.
Very important Album for me, I think it is better than Fragile but it's Relayer and Drama where YES are at their Absolute Best.
