  • The deepest insight into “Mayakovskaya” metro station of Moscow, Russia.
“Mayakovskaya” is one of the most beautiful stations in Moscow Metro, located on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line. It is built in 1938 by the project of an architect Alexey Dushkin. Renovated in 2010.
The station named for a famous Soviet poet, Vladimir Mayakovskiy.
The station was built as part of the second stage of the Moscow Metro expansion, opening on 11 September 1938. If the first stage was more focused on the building of the system itself, both architecturally and when it comes to the engineering, the stations appear modest in comparison to those that the second stage brought to the system. For the first time in the world, instead of having the traditional three-neath pylon station layout, the engineers were able to overlap the vault space and support it with two sets of colonnades on each side. This gave birth to a new Deep column station type design, and Mayakovskaya was the first station to show this.
Located 33 meters beneath the surface, the station became famous during World War II when an air raid shelter was located in the station. On the anniversary of the October Revolution, on 7 November 1941,Joseph Stalin addressed a mass assembly of party leaders and ordinary Muscovites in the central hall of the station. During World War II, Stalin took residence in this place.
Alexey Dushkin's Art Deco architecture was based on a Soviet future as envisioned by the poet Mayakovsky. The station features streamlined columns faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite, white Ufaley and grey Diorite marble walls, a flooring pattern of white and pink marble, and 35 niches, one for each vault. Surrounded by filament lights there are a total of 34 ceiling mosaics by Alexander Deyneka with the theme "24-Hour Soviet Sky."
In 2005 a new second north exit was built, along with a new vestibule. Passengers leaving the station first descend on a short escalator ride into an underground vestibule, and then ascend the long way to the surface. The new exit also allows access to the 35th mosaic, which was previously hidden behind the service section. Other mosaic works were designed from scratch, accompanied by ample use of marble and stainless steel sculpturing. The bust of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky was moved to the new surface vestibule, whose ceiling was also decorated with a mosaic composition from Mayakovsky's poem "Moscow Sky".

Ura! When I was 10 years old, I wrote a letter to the USSR embassy in Washington, D.C. requesting information on the Moscow Metro. Fifty-eight years later, Sergey delivers.

+shaggybreeks 50 years ago the Moscow Metro was also a potential vault in case of nuclear war, so it was really a strategic object.

they say it's a vault but I don't think a subway station would help anyone during a nuclear war..it's sorta like this duck and cover videos. I think it's just there to make people feel better.

Sergey, you mentioned that Mayakovskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful one in Moscow; however, I would venture to say that it is possibly the most beautiful metro station in the world! Certainly the architecture there is the most beautiful that I have ever seen in a subway station.
I love to view Russia through your eyes (the eyes of your camera), for you have the passion and exhilaration of one who sees everything for the first time and that makes it more interesting for all your viewers. It has been this youthful passion that you possess for your country that has kept me watching all your videos, since that very first one.

+BuckeyeBushcraft L. You wouldn't believe, Stephen, how much terrible anti-American propaganda Russia's government promotes on main TV channels here. Everyday they show us and speak of America being the source of all possible problems that modern Russia encounters. Believe me, lots and lots of Russians these day are so brainwashed. If you go out on a Moscow street or pretty much any street of a Russian city and ask people what they think of America or Americans, I bet at least 8 out of 10 will say mostly negative things about that. A lot of people will say that they do not trust Americans or even hate them, oddly enough considering the fact that most of them have never known any American personally. They keep soaking up all that crap form TV without even doubting.

@@anamericaninrussia01 I don't see why any Westerner with a decent paying job would move there to live. Career opportunity wise Russia looks fairly dim, unless you manage to land a white-collar job in Moscow or maybe you intend to work in a career relating to oil.
Plus, not being able to speak the Russian language itself is a big shot in the foot being that most in the country don't have a very good command of the English language. Further, many tend to be quite nationalistic so speaking the language with an accent might be an obstacle, but of course if you're a tourist it's totally fine if you do, but now say if you were competing for the same jobs as the locals then that's where the problem arises.
If I were you i'd hang tight in whatever Western country and travel to Russia on holidays since it should be relatively cheap to be there considering the exchange rates.

I teared up watching this. I am so grateful for this history lesson / exhibit of beauty. The amount of detail and sophistication in the marble stubs and commons. What a beautiful place my country is. Such a shame I moved to America at age 5. One day I will return! One day!

I heard that Belorussian, Kiev and Partisan stations are also beautiful, especially the partisan station which had great sculptures, of course, Mayakovsky, named after the great Russian poet, is definitely great too.By the way wondering how many people read the novel Metro 2033 or played Metro 2033, haha!!
    well done Sergey and Igor!!!
cannot wait to see the next episode!

If you attach a coin to the column and toss it up, the coin will fly across the metal arch above the platform and descend along the column on the other side of the platform. Such a trick ;-)

The American equivalent of Ivanov is Johnson which also quite common. The art work of the Mayakovskaya station is the excellent Russian painter Alexander Deineka who should be in my opinion better known in the United States. I think Americans might be interested in the Mendeleyev station's decoration, especially the light fixtures as they're inspired by its namesake's Periodic Table. Enjoy Moscow as there's a lot to see and do.

    Cool start Sergey!
I think all huge capitals of the world are somehow the same and not really representative for the average whole country or even the poorer parts..
But you pointed out why moscow is the right point to start your tours.
Id like to see some smaller towns in siberia for example :)
Or maybe even a factory / industry site?
    That would be great...

You should pick out 60 minutes of total footage or so, covering a number of common and interesting places, and make a documentary. Then submit it to the History channel or something. Seeing inside stores and old soviet apartments is really interesting. My friends think Russians live in dirt floored huts, wear grey and brown rags, and farm turnips or something. I think people would like to see you guys are just like everyone else.
