Just a bit of good news for you Mike ,both Jimmy and David were voted Fathers of the Year today the 29th August 2024. So I think that’s pretty special and very well deserved and also for them to share such an honour. There’s usually only 1 award for this but I think it’s so much sweeter for both Father and Son to be the joint recipient’s of this award. 🇦🇺😘
So beautiful. David only discovered Jimmy was his dad when he was about 10 years old, they had a rough start - Jimmy was very young and it’s a long story- but are now as thick as thieves and that’s what makes this song so special. Thanks for your reaction ❤
They are singing at Carols by candlelight. This show is the big televised show with the big stars that everyone watches. Every town in Australia has a carols by candlelight at Christmas. It is one of the big perks of having Christmas in the warm months; outside concerts in the park, connecting with family and singing happy christmas songs.
Not sure if you have reacted to David Campbell before, but he is Jimmy’s son. He also has a singing career and he is the host of Today Extra, a morning TV show in Australia. It is so touching to see you so emotional about that amazing rendition of the beautiful and meaningful song that it is. 🙏
Every year on Christmas Eve in Melbourne we have the Carol's in Candlelight singing carols and other songs. It is televised and the money from the sale of the candles go to charity.
Jimmy wrote in one of his books that he got a girl pregnant when he was about 15 years old. (Long story) The mother of the girl told both the girl and Jimmy that she would raise the baby as her own son and the girl had to pretend she was the baby’s sister and Jimmy had to pretend he was just a family friend. The baby of course was David. Jimmy used to visit David as a family friend. When Jimmy married his beautiful wife, Jane, Jane thought this was wrong and she phoned David’s mother / grandmother and discussed with her that it was time David was told the truth. The grandmother agreed and at the age of ten, David was allowed to come stay with Jimmy and Jane for visits. Jimmy and David had a lot to work through but they have a solid relationship now. The whole Barnes family adores David as both a son and as a brother. Jimmy’s wife and family mean more to him than anything. Interestingly, David started his career as a crooner and has performed on Broadway.
I’ve watched this a few times and the apple certainly didn’t fall far from the tree Jimmy was only 16 when David was born, but apparently they are very much alike in their ways and I love watching them together, they are brilliant.🇦🇺😘
Love this song. Love that you are enjoying learning about our Aussie artists. This is a beautiful moment between father and son and an packed full of emotion. My favourite rendition of this song is by John Farnham. Passionate and vocal perfection. You can see the emotion pouring out of him. I would.love to see you react to more from John and maybe down the track have a look at his rendition of this beautiful song as well. It's a song that means a lot to him and he sings it from the heart at most of his charity concerts which he has been involved in over the years, supporting farmers during droughts and fires and when our troups are overseas he had gone over there for a Christmas concert to help lift their spirits qhile they are so far from home. Anyway if you want to watch it. Check out this video from the 4 min mark. m.ruclips.net/video/x9uOgwgqt_8/видео.html
Aw don't hold it back....shed a few tears....they are tears of joy! Praise the Lord. Something so so beautiful about the 'father and son' showing such love and respect for each other.... whew I'm a little teary myself lol. Great reaction as per usual Mike.
Hi Mike! I'm also a Mike. I just discovered your channel and subscribed, I'm really enjoying your perspective on the iconic Australian songs. I'd love to see your reaction to Paul Kelly's song "They Thought I Was Asleep". It's not one of his best known or most popular ones, but it's short and bittersweet, and tugs at something deep in my heart. It doesn't matter which version you listen to, but I prefer watching the live performances.
This is a Rodgers and Hammerstein song from the stage musical Carousel, and was a great hit for Gerry and The Pacemakers in 1963; eventually becoming the anthem before every Liverpool FC home game, and is in memory of those lost in the Hillsborough fatal crowd crush. Although not written as a spiritual song, it has gained much more success; especially after Elvis Presley performed it in 1967, and featured on several of his gospel albums. This performance from Carols By Candlelight, always give me tingles all over; the Carols By Candlelight is an annual Australian Christmas Charity Concert, with proceeds going to Vision Australia.
This is one talented family. You've seen Chisel's song Choir Girl, and now David, Jimmys son singing. I think the apple dies not fall far from the tree...
I have seen Jimmy and David live separately over the years but it’s such a joy to see them together. I’m from Adelaide, South Australia and our sister city is Austin Texas
🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎵🎵🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵🎵 Our Jimmy and Son David nailing this beautiful soulful song at a Carols By Candlelight night is timeless..Ty for the reaction Love From Australia to you and yours in Texas head up and be strong mate.
A lovely rendition by Jimmy and his son David. During our lockdown. Jimmy performed from his home streaming almost nightly with his family. It meant a great deal to many of us. He is as you can see very versatile.
Hi Mike, I also requested this song and detailed whom Jimmy was singing with. In case you never saw this, David Campbell is the son of Jimmy Barnes. When you see Jimmy in his younger days, he looks very much like David does, so the resemblance is there in looks and their amazing voices. David made his break in musical theatre in the US and played the role of Marius in Les Miserable. He came back to Australia where he continues with theatre and television. On occasion, father and son have gotten together to perform, including a great performance at a Rugby Grand Final one year. David definitely inherited his father's lungs! Carols by Candlelight is an annual event held each Christmas Eve in Melbourne to celebrate Christmas whilst singing Carols and watching performances like this great one. Everyone in the audience holds candles which is a magnificent sight to see. One time that I attended, we floated our candles on the nearby Yarra River which was beautiful. I love to see during this performance just how proud Jimmy is of David. David was raised away from his father during his younger years, but have been reunited for quite sometime. As you can most likely see, they have a very close bond. I'm so glad that you played this video. I've already requested a number of songs, so will spare you this time. Hope that you had a lovely weekend, Kris.🇦🇺
It was actual midnight Sunday when this was available to me in South Australia, so it was a half an hour earlier on the East coast; but well after 2:30 Monday morning on the West coast.
Right up my alley. Will you please do some Pentatonix. We Pentaholics love reactions. You know it is a phenomenon to have 20,2 million followers. I think David would have soon realised that Jimmy was his dad as they could be twins! Imagine finding out as a young kid that Jimmy was your dad..then being a teenager whilst Jimmy was a 30yr old wild man! shows what a strong person David must be as it would be a mind f*ck 😂 by the way it’s 7am Monday morning in Australia .. the future looks good!
This was a beautiful version of this classic stage show song on Christmas Eve in Melbourne in the 90’s. John Farnham also did this at the Melbourne carols which is on every Christmas Eve rain, hail or shine. John’s version was a year or two before this and please do that one, it was a bit more polished and so powerful and emotional from John and his 3 backing vocalists.

Father and son, doesn't get much better than that
It's the moment Jimmy hugs and kisses David on the cheek that brings me unstuck every time.❤
A father's love knows no bounds !!!
Beautiful
It's even more beautiful because they're father & son
David is Jimmy's first son and that kiss at the end says it all. Love this version.

This song is a Rogers and Hamerstein musical number from the Broadway musical Carousel.
You will really love Jimmy sing with *Fire and Rain* with Marcia Hines.
Even more gentle and soulful that this.
