MOT Test Day - Will it PASS? - 1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

  • The Day of Reckoning!!!
PART 58 of this series...It has all been building up to this day. The day I take the Rolls-Royce for the MOT to see if it is roadworthy.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 58 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
If you have an interesting 'non returnable' item for a 'trying to fix' video then my PO box is as follows. Please only use if you are from the UK and using Royal Mail.
    My Mate Vince
    PO Box 2597
    WATFORD
    WD18 1HT
    UK
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

It is a wonderful car to own and drive, and as Vince soon found out, you get so many lovely comments. Kick down, check vacuum pipe to vacuum modulator on the side of the gearbox which I think is the GM400 Diaphragm goes soft, cost about £90 but cross reference it as the GM400 was used in all sorts of land barge, also change the o ring when fitting you can do this without dropping oil. Note (from memory) there is a cable actuated kick down on the throttle body with a very janky cable, this may need adjustment but check manual as the set up is counter intuitive. Temperature, quick check turn on heater if you have good heat you know the heads are wet also good turn on when in traffic and the temp is rising. fault either sender, thermostat or Mr Lucus !!!!!!!.
Hope this is helpful. Congratulations Vince.

@@Mymatevince Good work vince, better than you expected so you can stop chasing perfection and start driving it. The car will improve with use and the paint will start shine even more. Headlights, leave a pouch of desiccant in the housing to stop condensation.
Some good news it seems Mr Lucus is happy however keep water off any electrics especially the relay box which I still have nightmares about. A touch of Vaseline on connectors helps keep the green death and Lucas blue smoke away. The fuel injection is from memory Bosh Ktronic design which is good but on old cars it is best to put a fresh fuel filter on and only use E5 petrol. Have you thought of an LPG conversion ?, works a treat on my V8's and not a difficult fit on the lumps you have.
Steering wheel ; Bakelite oxidises, polish with Brasso was off ALL residue then again finally finish with a Beeswax burnish. The wheel will improve with use. There is a special compound but I forget the name.
Lastly DON"T trust that jack or the jacking points. Get a trolly jack and stands, lift under the wishbones or subframe. The RR is a heavy Mumma and although those sills look sound they are old and if the jack punches through (and I know they do ? ) the car is scrap at the very least the doors won't shut.

To adjust the parking brake start the engine and then shift into neutral. You then switch the engine off if you desire, you will still have the resistance from the diff but you won't be fighting the gearbox etc.
You don't drive in a Rolls Royce you waft 😄 The whole car is designed for the back seat passenger in mind as many owners got their driver to drive so it's all about comfort with handling and agility not being of concern hence the really lower tyre pressures. Increasing them will help handling and fuel economy at the expense of comfort.
It's basically like driving a big sofa where you wallow around corners with the slush-o-matic gearbox changing gears.
Need to get that temp gauge working ASAP before the engine cooks and it's all over.
Congratulations on getting it back on the road Vince!

    • @APSuk2
      @APSuk2 22 дня назад +3

@@Mymatevince I will do my best Vince, in regards to the coolant temperature gauge not working, once you find where the coolant temperature sensor is on the engine if it has one wire going to it you need to ground the wire by connecting it to the chassis or battery negative. With the ignition on the temperature gauge should then read hot with the wire grounded.
If it does then the coolant temperature sensor is at fault. If it does not then the gauge or wiring is at fault

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  21 день назад

@@APSuk2 Thanks Adam, I'm looking forward to doing this as the next job. Apparently it does have a sensor, just under where the thermostat is. It might be as simple as a corroded wire. Or it might end up being a blue mat video if the gauge itself is faulty. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday 👍

That cost more than I have spent on maintaining the car in the 12 years I have owned it, but was worth every penny. My new garage is wonderful , it's now 21ft long and 14ft wide. When thinking about buying an old Rolls or Bentley it's important that you have somewhere dry to keep it.

Sincerely Vince ive watchrd your videos for a long ass time, i commented years agovthat your upbeat character and your willingness to show failure is what attracted me to your content
Cars aint my bag, hence i watched the first few on the roller and the last few and the difference is outstanding
The rolls is the peak of English engineering and youve nailed it , i literally punched the air when you showed the pass certificate, ha, expecting a second channel now, Vince's posh weddings
Hopefully for me now i can sit back and enjoy the vintage tech fix it videos that i enjoy immensely, youre a star mate, keep on shining

CONGRATULATIONS! I've watched this series since the beginning and it's been such a fun ride (pun intended). Looking back at everything you've worked on, the task really seemed titanic, and even though the results were varied, in the end it was worth it. I'm so happy for you, enjoy your rat mobile mate, you've earned it!

Well done Vince ! (that was me that told you its illegal to film a MOT which it is) but I have to tell you this, I took a mates car to work today to MOT it, and he always presents it fully clean, and that's how a mot tester likes it not some mothers do have em full of baby sick and gym kits, but in Appledore we had a bit of a sand storm and then a fishing boat turned up followed by some seagulls OMG !! Lucky when I dropped it back and met him at the village pub everyone one found it funny! Great job Vince have really enjoyed this series Thanks!

You are doing a good deed: people will smile when they see the RR - little kids will be amazed. You're creating memories for them. Great job on the car, Sir MMV.

Congratulations Vince, it looks fantastic. Paint looks great, no need to get a professional respray. The hard work you put in got it past the MOT in the end. I watched every episode of this, it was a great project and the two years has flown by.

I don't know if you remembered me commenting on the first video, but I said I would binge watch this, I'm definitely going to now and I'm honestly so proud of how far you and the car has come, this has been my favourite RUclips channel for years and this has been by far my favourite series for 2 years, it's been amazing to see you and the car grow, proud of ya Vince!

Congratulations Vince! The car looks great, sounds well, and it’s been a fascinating series to follow! I hope Ratty continues to bring a smile to your face, for many years.
I’m sure there’ll be hiccups & headaches, as old cars tend to test us, but just remember how far you’ve brought that old girl!
I’d love to see her, and I suppose you too, if you take her on a tour of the UK! Regardless of whether you tell any of us or not, you should bring her up to Blackpool. 👊🏼

Fantastic work, Vince. I'm proper proud of you. It's kind of bittersweet that this series is coming to an end. I hope you'll do another one in the future. Maybe a Cessna? Never say never! Stranger things have happened ;)
