  • McKinley Railway, it's an incredible OO DCC Layout. Luckily Chadwick Model Railway had a visit to what could well be the largest and potentially greatest model railway in the UK.

What a layout! The train automation and the operations would be most interesting to see in action. All the details, all the scenery, all the painting would have taken a huge amount of time. Adding stress to the operators is something I would not think of but it must add another level of operation. Seeing that fiddleyard and it size really must be the biggest fiddleyard I’ve ever seen. I’ll have to check this channel out because this seams to have everything. Really inspiring seeing this. Clint

Having just spent the day laying cork track-base and, the track itself. Five sets of points and respective point motors, soldering on a reverse loop unit and installing dropper wires, I decided to catch up with your site Charlie. What a fantastic treat you presented. Despite the sad news about David’s videographer, he is obviously an extremely proud and dedicated model railway engineer. That said, I am even more determined to rekindle my love of modelling and as long as their are enthusiasts like you and David, I can only hope others starting out and, indeed more experienced modellers, have seen what can be achieved. I look forward to the promised updates to come!

i remember going to the german train museum in Nuremberg and thinking how wonderful it was. then i started operating in Omaha nebraska on home layouts. 30 years latter, i go back to that "huge" layout in germany and was disappointed. Several of our home layouts are significantly larger than the museum layout i used to obsess over, including my own. having a basement and disposable income.

Blimey that's so crazy it's brilliant. It's beyond railway modelling - it's a conceptual working piece of art. That needs to be saved for posterity - in an art gallery or museum. (I just come up with the daft ideas; no need to thank me!)

Charlie: That was a nice thing that you have done. This guy has got a very sophisticated layout (not one that the average model railroader would have) That by no means makes the video not interesting to watch. There is no a man or boy that hasn't been mesmerized watching trains run in small, average, or large circles. Again this was different but still interesting. You bring the visual talents to the process.

The many past videos on control options and operational options are interesting to say the least. I always look forward to the next episode of this spectacular ever evolving layout.

I think McKinley is probably the state of the art when it comes to fusing embedded technology, model making, computing and engineering - certainly at this level of size and scale. As has been repeatedly pointed out, not many people have the money or the space to do things like this. However, David and his team have shared - on their channel via Brian Gardner's excellent videos - pretty much all the detail of how they have made things work, surmounted obstacles to innovation and how they have improved performance, reliability and realism. They have also named suppliers who have assisted in those endeavours (as fo course do you, Charlie). To my mind that means that, whatever the focus, the scope or scale of our layouts, there are improvements we can make based on their sharing of that knowledge and the sources of some great new products and ideas.
Charlie, I was hoping that someone would do a much longer cab ride video around McKinley - and here it is! Well done and many thanks!
A shout out to Brian for his great work making McKinley videos. RIP Brian.

I know this is two years earlier & every personal right of way i say okay! Charlie I subscribed immediately to your colleague model railroader. Paddington. That's where they found the bear and from whence he got his name. I think I read all those books when I was a child.
That is a truly magnificent layout! He's got more track in the fiddle yard than I'll have on my whole layout! It's quite generous of you to help out with the videos, Charlie. One of the best things about this hobby is the great people who are involved in it. There are a few that are otherwise, but most are grand people.

Hi Charlie,,,well I tried the cork table top,,,glued it to the table,,,,,I didn't like the two foot by three foot rolls so I glued another layer on top of it,,,,two foot by eight foot,,,,,much better,,,,,I did notice however that if you change to a warmer room the cork ""grows"",,,,,not much but just enough to bubble a little bit,,,,,once back in the cooler basement it sttled back down,,,,looks really good,,,,,I started laying my turnouts today,,,,and discovered that spray painting is not a good thing if you're not experienced with it,,,,,my points got stuck and hopefully I got them fixed so I don't have to replace them,,,from here on out I will hand paint the turnouts,,,,,,just some lessons learned,,,,,,thank you for your video's,,,,you've truly helped me,,,,

Hi Charlie. What a privilege to be asked to represent the McKinley model railway. I’ve been watching this RUclips channel from the beginning and like yours it’s been a pleasure seeing your work progress. Sad that Brian a team member of McKinley railway lost his life to that terrible disease cancer.....😢 RIP. Hopefully you’ll make a great team member and I’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing you on both RUclips channels 😄 Where next? Richard at Everard junction lol 😆 Anyway keep the good work up and have a nice weekend Stevie 😎

I always get a sense of childlike wonder seeing layouts like this (which is a strange thing to say given I'm barely 20). I went to see Gainsborough once and it was fantastic to see a full main line represented in miniature scale.

Hi Charlie. I'm a great admirer of your channel and think this McKinley railway is fantastic. It reminds me of the railway at Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. Where they have a timetable for running the trains. If you haven't been it's worth a visit. It's only open to the public on certain dates through the year but I'm sure you'll be welcome following a Phone call

Charlie, that's really a beautiful layout. I kinda like the idea that a computer is running the trains and deciding when and what order they appear on the layout.
I do like operating though as a local or as a switchman in a yard working to break up trains and remake others for distant distentions as well as local deliveries.
Now we return to Sedwitch Railway.
    Hey Charlie;
Every day is an Excellent Day to Run Trains.

I think that layout is absolutely brilliant. what lot of work and the attention of detail. some of the layout underneath does kind of look like you are under ground. I think some of the cables above the train might look good if they was put into tubes and painted to look like pipe. give a little bit more looking like under ground. but other than that WOW
