I would also like to add that the Galactic Federation being evil is a mistranslation. In the original Japanese, it was only one small faction within the GF that was trying to clone Metroids and study the X (it’s also the same as the one’s who were doing it in Other M too, which also got mistranslated as the whole GF). This means that Samus isn’t an outlaw at the end, she’s a hero for exposing the corrupt faction. That’s why she’s still in good terms with them in Dread.

Metroid Fusion’s actually my second-favorite of the 2D games (after Zero Mission), for all of the reasons you mentioned! My only critiques of the game are that they could’ve had more environmental changes, and skippable dialogue after you beat the game once. I would love to see a remake of this that makes the SA-X’s appearances less scripted and makes areas even darker and creepier.

  • @danitabori
    @danitabori 4 года назад +120

Too bad after this game we only got interquels and remakes. The people who made Samus returns wanted to make a Fusion remake originally and there are callbacks to Fusion that weren't in the original Metroid 2. Like the enemy shown in the fusion opeining that Samus meets on SR388 is the same species as the one that is shown at the end of Samus Returns getting infected by the X.
Sadly a lot of people think that Super Metroid is in every way better, though Fusion has a lot of good design and other points to it too. But it isn't freely explorable, it doesn't have seemless tutorials, sequence breakong and stuff like that. Well that's not the only way a good game can be made. Everyone loves Breath of the wild, but I don't like that much freedom in a game. It feels like nothing I do has purpose in games like that. Now that's an unpopular opinion lol
Anyway, I hope that the Super Metroid remake rumors are true, not because there are things that need to be changed in SM, but because then Metroid could continue. I mean we won't see Prime 4 for a long time and even if we get that, it's just part of a sub series. It probably won't differ too much from the other 3. Metroid should be able to get more love if they can pump out some smaller projects like remakes of the 2D games with a more connected narrative and ironing out the flaws that they couldn't originally (yes, even Super Metroid has flaws, it's not perfect).

    • @DuoStuff
      @DuoStuff  4 года назад +20

I agree with you on a lot of points here. I gotta admit it is really unfortunate that we've never really gotten anything past this point story-wise. (And heck in terms of 2D games we haven't gotten a non-remake since Fusion.)
As far as the original idea for Samus Returns being a remake of Fusion, while I think it would've been awesome, I'm glad Metroid 2 got a remake. It's a bit dated nowadays and really needed an update.
On the Super Metroid remake: I genuinely think Super Metroid could use one. It definitely has some problems, like it's controls and a couple blandly designed areas. I agree with you that it isn't perfect, and that a remake could improve its flaws. Though I gotta admit that I'd kind of prefer a new game, but that's just me.
Anyways I enjoyed reading your comment. I like more in depth comments like this a ton.

I mean in other series you already start up pretty much strong so you just tank it all up which kind of ruining the fun but when you started as very weak it just gives you the feeling of fight or flight since it raised up your awareness to be more careful and I like that in fact cause it is kind of reflect us in some sort of way

Another thing to consider about the navigation rooms is that this was a more modern handheld game at the time. Handheld games were usually designed around playing in quick spirts or to be played after setting the game down for long periods of time. Save rooms are everywhere too so you can pick the game up, play for 15 to 30 minutes as your parents drove you somewhere or on the bus, and you would have a navigation room to remind you what you are doing, and save rooms nearby so you can save when your free time was finished.

I've always never quite liked super metroid because I played fusion first and it's so much more refined. Thanks man and all the people in the comments it really sucks this video hasn't gotten as many views. And another thing I'm really worried that they are going to try to have a "super metroid" experience for the next 2d metroid and I really hope they take inspiration from fusion too.

Fusion was the first Metroid game I played and still the only one I can play again and again without getting tired of it. The only game that comes close is Zero Mission with Prime in a close third.
Great analysis my dude, but if there's one thing I disagree with it's the navigation rooms. About half of them are completely useless. If they cut out those, Fusion would be close to the perfect Metroid game. The only thing wrong with it is that there hasn't been a direct sequel yet, lol.
Also fuck the SA-X. That thing gave me nightmares for days!

A copy of Fusion came with my GBA when I was 8. It's the game that made me love the franchise, and it's the one closest to my heart. And Metroid is like the only game franchise I don't absolutely suck at, because I spent hours and days replaying and replaying the GBA games on road trips.
Even speaking as someone with enough mastery that I'd really like to mess around more with the sequence, Fusion is my favourite. It has the best bosses and the best movement of the franchise, but for the lack of bomb jumps (there *is* a hack for that).

As for the actual game, yeah Fusion is SUPER underrated. It was my 2nd Metroid game and I loved it so much. In fact, it was one of the first games that really got me into video game music (I even had separate save files for areas where I enjoyed the music). As the game is more narrative focused, it seems to my ears that the soundtrack leans more heavily on film scoring styles of composition, and thus borrows heavily from the likes of 2001 a space odyssey and similar sci fi horror scores. Great game with an amazingly horrific soundtrack :)

I loved Metroid Fusion. It's one of the only games I have that I went and beat more than once. Never 100% the game though. Wan't easy, but I beat it with less than 1 full row of health tanks during my first time through the game and took me hours to beat the final boss because of it. This was (as far as I can remember) the only 2D game I've ever played that actually made me feel scared thanks to the SA-X. I remember one of the first times you run into it, specifically this room at 20:44 and I accidently used a morph ball bomb and destroyed the floor. That was... definitely something.
How everything would be so quiet and all you hear are the SA-X's boots hitting the floor and I didn't even want to make a sound was pretty crazy. They did an amazing job with making the SA-X as menacing as it was. Metroid Fusion was a rare game for me that really kept my attention throughout the entire thing. For me, one of the best things about it was the story and going back to the navigation room to see what else going on with the Adam AI and how it would change over time. This is easily one of my most favorite games ever.

That Samus' suit becomes fused to her body is actually a misconception born from not great translation and general misunderstanding.
    1. Her suit has 3 layers. The "zero" layer, the biological layer, and the armor layer, in that order. The biological layer has a bunch of life support systems and may or may not be alive itself (it's not really clear).
    2. Her suit can only be taken off by her. She has to will it off. Because the X parasite knocked her unconscious, and they couldn't wake her up, they had to remove the suit destroying the outer layer in the process. The reason Samus was unable to remove the suit is as simple as that: she was unconscious.
Samus can take off the fusion suit any time she wants, and it will eventually grow the armored layer back.
Another common misconception is that Samus becomes a fugitive after the destruction of the BSL station. This is also not true. The BSL gets investigated and a splinter group is uncovered as a result, leading to Samus being seen as a hero.

I'm absolutely with you on this one, Metroid Fusion is my favourite videogame of all time, just like you said, many things that people don't like about it are actually some of my favourite aspects. To me the best part is how it perfectly blends the narrative with thw gameplay without relying too much on either environment or exposition but a mix of both.
Too bad that Prime was released so close to it, it pretty much overshadowed Fusion unfortunately.
Anyway I'm so ready for finally advancing the story with Dread next October!
Also, one question, will you also play and review Metroid OtherM? I saw that you did all the 2D Metroids, and OtherM is basically part of the 2D story despite its different gameplay. I know it's not a well received game, but personally I think it's so much underrated, people online just spread rumors about OtherM without even having played it. Please consider it.

Got it. I would recommend to play it before the Prime games though because OtherM plot is part of the 2D story and it would make more sense that way in my opinion. It also links pretty smoothly the events of Super to those of Fusion and if you're into Metroid lore then you'll be satisfied.
Like I said before, OtherM is flawed, from the forced control scheme to some questionable story elements, but it is far from the disaster it is painted as and I actually very much enjoyed the story, characters and gameplay.

Serris might come at you fast but his attacks aren't random, he follows a very specific attack pattern and you can avoid most of it by hanging from the ceiling. He even telegraphs when he's going to do his big overhead jump. I was able to figure out this attack pattern as a kid so I imagine most people can figure out too if they keep a level head and pay attention. It's speed is mostly just a way to make you panic.

Who knows, that can maybe lead into Prime 4 story about being on the hunt.

As a somewhat recently converted huge Metroid fan, this game is an example of a game in a series doing something different, but still making it really fantastic. On it's own, it's amazing how much atmosphere and sosphisticated story telling it does on a freaking GBA. I can't believe their hasn't been a direct sequel to this game for almost 20 years; personally, if we were to get a sequel, I think I would prefer if the developers took everything that makes the story and atmosphere of this game great and blended it together with a more standard Metroidvania experience. I can't stress enough how much I like the story telling from Metroid game to Metroid game, even if it is really basic but it's just so cool to see so much consistency and building from game to game in a Nintendo series. One day we'll hopefully get the well deserved sequel to this game.

Like you, Fusion is my favourite in the franchise. Here are some of my jot-notes as to why that is, just off the top of my head.
-The unique story, as well as the suit being corrupted and re-animated and hunting the player is so damn cool.
-The new X Parasite suit is awesome and the colour palette for it looks really good.
-The more linear gameplay leaves me less annoyed and frustrated when playing, and I can just focus on playing and enjoying the game. I didn't need to use a walkthrough or look up tips with this one, unlike all the other games.
-They somehow made Fusion even more ambient with its music than the orevious games.
-The environments are so well detailed. The gritty and beautiful environments are so pleasant to look at.
-Although many leople seem to say this is one of the harder Metroid games, I found it to be one of the easier ones, which allowed me to enjoy it more. The difficulty felt more fair than the other ones.
Just an all around amazing game, and I wish it got more recognition and praise than it has. I'm still waiting for a Metroid 5.

Especially with how it handles its experimental new things it has done in the franchise, linear progression, more focus on action than exploration, horror created through tension etc. These experimental things made the game a new, fresh game in the franchise despite it breaking the original Metroid formula into smithereens for making space for some new, raw testing fun!
