      But this video is "dated" 1 year ago. Anyway, a year later, assuming you used your R6 before "two weeks ago", what if any angst do you have from seeing Canon come out with the R6 Mk 2?
      Excellent topic: the ergonomics question. I've not held either the R5 or R6 but let's just say they are pretty close to the buttons and dials geography of a 5D or 7d, et al. I have held, and in fact bought, by mail order, a Canon R7; and for me the ergonomics of it were VERY different from my 7D Mk 2 or 60D. If you have held or used an R7, what was your experience?

    After struggling for the past year and a half with the Nikon z6 ii for BIF & wildlife photography I finally decided to try the R6. OMG the difference was night and day!
    I went from about a 20% keeper rate to at least 75%. I promptly sold my Nikon equipment and purchased the R6 with a 100-500RF lens and couldn’t be happier!

      I am really surprised to hear that. I have never been able to try Nikon but assumed the cameras were fairly equivalent. Congratulations on the new gear and I'm very jealous of your 100-500! Enjoy :)

    I love my R6! Since I'm a hobbyist, I decided the R6 + 100-500 was better than the R5, even if I can't crop quite as much with the R6 without help of software like Topaz. And your R6 color profiles are all I use now!

    Ah, it's really great to see you back! And with excellent new videos. Still shooting an older 77D as an amateur wildlife photographer I hope someday I'll be able to benefit from those great new tech developped in the mirrorless world. Already just got a tamron 150-600mm G2 and playing with it (though I need to fine tune the back focusing issue I'm having).
    As much as the R5 and R6 seem tempting I can't justify this kind of investment but I'm glad you can so we'll get to see this beautiful fauna you share with us.
    Greetings from France.

    It's been a while - I love seeing a new Will Goodlet video in my subscription list :)
    I ended up going for the Fujifilm XT-4 with their 100-400mm lens and a l.4x TC for some extra reach should I need it. I'm really happy so far. It doesn't have the animal/bird eye auto focus (maybe a future firmware upgrade could resolve this) but I've been really happy with the AF it does have.
    Keep well and thanks for your videos Will!

    I understand even though I'm not really stuck in the Canon system per se. I own four Canon cameras: two 7D Mk2s, pretty much at the end of their useful life, a third almost new 7D Mk2, and my old original 60D. And I own that splendid example of Canon's Art before "RF" in the EF 100-400mm II "L" zoom.
    But that's it. My other lens is a Sigma 150-600mm with a Canon EF mount, and I can certainly keep my 7Ds and my two current lenses. They wouldn't yield much money if sold anyway. I am now at that point where indeed I have been looking at other brands as I contemplate an eventual transition to mirrorless. I'm glad you added that super script with Olympus. I am seriously looking at the OM-1. And all that that would entail in the question of lenses. It really is the perfect time for me.

    I bought an R6 about a month ago as a replacement for one of my 5d Mk4's, and I'm delighted I did. Living in the UK, although I have an EF100-400 f4-5.6L Mk2, I'm tending to use my EF300 f4L and a convertor as I photograph birds and our smaller mammals. I used the video mode for the first time this week, hand held whilst watching a badger in the early morning. I could never use the 5d handheld with live view as it was so difficult to keep focused. I've really enjoyed your videos in Kruger and just wish I could go back with my current kit, and yes, I'd be photographing mainly but getting so memories captured in video.

    Great diagnosis and delivery Will. Decision fatigue and decision remorse are always there when making big purchases but you have excellently shown that this can be countered by understanding what your own specific needs are, as a hybrid shooter in a very specific environment. This mitigates the remorse and allows you to spend time with the more useful questions around maximising your new equipment to your needs. Al

    I'm glad that you're finding some good use and results with the R6! I've been so happy with it myself and the savings of money, computer space, cards and other expenses associated with the R5. I shoot also with the Sony A7iv and I think you made the right choice to stick with canon. Sony has some very nice features too like the S&Q slow motion mode and more customizable buttons but the R6 just feels wonderful in the hands, looks great through the viewfinder, locks on quickly to my subjects and eyes, and it's my number one camera of choice. Happy shooting and best of luck to you Will!
    Transition eyeglasses also helped a lot with my vision and photography through the view finder and evf.

    Excellent, well thought out, well presented and concisely on point.
    I recently changed from a full frame DSLR to an R6 and so far I am delighted with my choice. Unfortunately, having had a few health issues I have been unable to fully test out the camera but as my health improves I am looking forward to getting back to it.
    Your point about system consistency is extremely important for me. The older I get the less nimble my mind and fingers become and so ideally I would always want two identical bodies, or as near as possible identical. Therefore the lower cost of the R6 means a far better chance of my being able to afford two bodies. As the R6 has (as you mentioned) the same auto focus and frame rates as the R5 I really don't feel the need to have the extra mp count which to me would just mean more computer issues.
    Once again Will, an excellent review.

  • @JohnDrummondPhoto

    I shoot mainly landscapes and birds. I bought an R6 last year for video and as a B camera for stills behind my 5D Mark IV. Turns out it's a great stills body too. More recently I got an R5 and sold the 5D4. I regret nothing! ☺️ I'm glad to be able to use my EF lenses but they're mostly 3rd party and I'm replacing them with native RF lenses as I can. I recently got the 100-500 and got brilliant images of both birds and butterflies. The R5 even locked onto a butterfly's eye! I guess I'm Canon for life, for sure.

    • @WillGoodlet

      The 100-500 looks like a great lens for photography. I think if I didn’t see the utility of the 100-400 for video (not forgetting it can be used on black magic, z can etc.. too) I would have already traded in.
      I imagine you don’t want to be too close to the bears on foot :) 500mm sounds better than 400mm!

      @@WillGoodlet I actually got some good slo-mo B roll of insects with the 100-500 too. You can see it in the latest video on my own channel, if you care to take a look. I'm not in bear country unless I drive for an hour, but if I came across one I'd much rather be shooting 500mm!

    Always good to hear your well thought out feedback - makes a lot of sense. Interestingly I have just gone through a similar decision process after having spend a week at Kruger with my R5. It soon became clear that trying to use one body as a hybrid often makes life very difficult given differing needs of photo vs video e.g. different lenses, variable ND filters , adding external mics etc. and if you have others in the vehicle in the passenger seat next to you nigh impossible to remain efficient / not miss shots. Trying to move around my R5 with a 500F4 and (sometimes) a 1.4 convertor) as the vehicle driver was inelegant to say the least LOL. With the high winds also experienced and tons of dust in the air I was also reticent to change lenses too often. Eventually I turned to my old XA20 camcorder as an alternative in these conditions with its always on Rode shotgun mic and dead cat cover. When I got home and reviewed the footage (admittedly only on FHD screens) a couple of home truths struck home - the HD video from the camcorder was good in decent light but has no DOF and as soon as exposure changed struggled somewhat, however the camcorders audio was night and day better than the mirrorless with its XLR capabilities. So what I have done is to upgrade my camcorder to an XF400 with a 1 inch sensor (still with limited DOF) but with CLOG3 4k 60 capabilities which I can now lock and load on my Gimpro and manfrotto HDV head and keep my R5 (using beanbags) purely for photography - only time will tell if this double option works well for me

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 года назад +2

      Hi Craig good info here thanks.
      I thought about the camcorder route too - I’m still thinking - the Depth-of-Field could be considered an advantage for smaller animals close by.
      Really nice to have audio and Nd built in.
      I use an external recorder and shotgun and stop often to capture sound samples. Im less disciplined about capture of sound during video recording but obviously it’s necessary sometimes!
      Re the 500 on beanbags - I just asked Ralph to sell me an extra clamp for the gimpro - I can then simply change heads when needed. But these days I just use Manfrotto plates on all my gear and one head.
      I’m trying to persuade Fiona to video but it’s not working ;)

    Thanks for another great video. I enjoyed your comments about the ergonomic consistency - something not often discussed. I agree that the consistency of modern Canon menus makes it easier to switch between cameras, but I still find the button & control placements could be more consistent. I have an R5 and an M6 mk II. I use the R5 most of the time, and every time I pick up my M6 mk II it takes me a minute or 2 to reorient myself to its controls. That said, once I have adjusted to the M6's layout I do find it (and M5 before it) to be the most versatile and user-friendly when it comes to controls, having a mode dial plus 3 rotating dials, with the bonus of the dial on the back being able to rotate and act like a 4-way button - something I wish the R5 had. I look forward to the upcoming R7 (hopefully it will replace my M6 as my APS-C option) and although I prefer the M6's overall control versatility, I do hope the R7's controls are identical to the R5's for the sake of consistency.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 года назад

      Hi David, yes I can understand moving between the M6 and R5 would be harder. I guess it's always going to be informed by physical real estate on the camera.

  • @trevor9934
    @trevor9934 2 года назад

    I must admit I am not a videographer - purely stills; but I appreciate a lot of what you are saying with regards to the focus and tracking of the R5 and R6. When the early R and RP units came out, I saw them as a toe in the water to get Canon's excellent R-mount lenses onto the market, while they matured the R5 and 6. I am glad I waited for these bodies as they are game-changers for wildlife and human photography with the IBIS, IBIS + ILIS on RF lenses, and animal and human eye tracking. I also really like the fully-articulated screen so I can shoot with the camera above me or below as required and still see the LCD screen - I normally shoot through the viewfinder though! Like you, I love the friendly interface and consistently in both the menu and ergonomic interfaces, although I also shoot Nikon and Sony from time-to-time, I really value that consistency. The vast majority of my gear is Canon.
    I got the RF 24-105L, 100-400 and 24-240 units when I got my two R6 bodies. I shoot essentially birds right now, although until I travel overseas from NZ I am keeping my hand in for large mammals by shooting at the zoo! I am absolutely happy with the performance of the older EF glass, using the EF adapters. They have also worked fine with my Sigma EF-mount 150-600c and 60-600s lenses, which give me the reach I need. I am seriously tempted to get the EF adaptor with the ND filter. I have found that the 20MP sensor (which likely is the same or based on the one in the 1DXMkIII) has about 1 stop of improved DR over the R5 - that said, each has its own merits as the R5 will let me crop down much more with its 45MP sensor.
    I would refer you to the excellent reviews by Gordon Laing of Camera Labs reviewing the R6 for photography ruclips.net/video/O6E6aGswzcE/видео.html and the R5 in comparison with a couple of current alternatives including the R, RP and R6.
    When people talk about what camera is best they often discuss what they shoot, but frankly AT LEAST as important is what they produce. It takes a lot greater investment to create large, detailed Fine Art prints than to create for social media, smaller prints, or digital display. I don't post images on social media but most of my stuff falls within the other two categories with the odd occasional large detailed print.

    Very good thoughts and exactly what we did. Switching from M50/5D3 and 5D4 to the R6.
    I decided to switch right after 1.4 update and we don’t look back.
    Just added the RF 24-105 F4 L and the RF 35 f1.8 with the RF/EF Adapter. Still on the fence about selling some of our dozen EF glasses.
    Half of the glass are primes and the other zooms… Still use our 6 Canon flashes and wireless remote triggers for the strobes. Still have tons of LPE6 and 6n batteries….
    Maybe switch the 15-30 f2.8 VC first to the RF14-35 F, or the EF 70-200 F4 to the RF version.
    We shoot lots of pictures of fast running dogs, so the 70-200 might be more urgent.

    Great to see your videos again. There is so much useful advice here! I have had some limited experience using the Black Magic Pocket 4K for live streaming together with a EOS R/100-400II and EOS RP/Sigma 150-600. The Canon combinations give great image quality out of the box. The BMPCC takes a lot more work.
    I am really interested in your remarks about the extenders. I am about to invest in a 1.4x for use with my 7D2 and EOS R when using the 100-400L II. I read different things about performance for photography and extenders vs cropping, but this should not be a drawback for video as I am pleased to hear you confirm. I was going to look for a 1.4 iii initially, but if there is negligible difference in image quality or AF performance with both my bodies I wonder if I should be looking for a 1.4ii because it can be stacked with a 2xii later for video. If the R7 never arrives I might eventually replace the 7D2 with the R6, live with the smaller sensor and use Topaz software to compensate for that. I'd love to know what you think would be the best option.

      Hi Andrew,
      Thanks for watching and the info on the BMPCC, I have to be realistic and think the mirrorless cameras offer the best option in my cramped and sometimes high pace environment. Doesn't stop me lusting for that beautiful footage out the BMPCC's!
      The 1.4 III works well on the mirrorless cameras - even my little M50 can autofocus well with stacked 14. + 2x (with 12mm spacer between them).
      On the 7D2, you will only have a centre AF with the 1.4 and manual with 2x.
      My reading suggests that the Mark iii versions are sharper than the Mark ii. They can still be stacked with the 100-400 with a spacer (you will lose infinity focus).
      I still use my 7D2 and have no problem picking it up in good light or conditions where dynamic range is not an issue. It has greater resolution than the R5. Where the R6/5 have it beaten quite comprehensively is with the autofocus and frame rates they offer. I also think they function better with slower glass - but sticking the 7D2 on fast glass works well and I'm keeping mine - it's still very useful.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 года назад

      Thanks :) On the R3 - I don't think it's really necessary for what I shoot nor does it offer an advantage over the R5 when paired with my 400mm.
      The R6 offers a back up camera, low-light video, vlogging and astro option at a much cheaper price with perfectly adequate autofocus and fps for wildlife - and it uses the same grip & batteries - it also costs less to insure.
      It seems that we are very close to a point where the capability of many 35mm cameras is adequate to capture most African wildlife.
      While for landscapes the larger sensors and 16bits on Fuji MF become more aspirational and affordable as an interesting future option (although I feel the physical size of the lenses will always naturally preclude effective use for wildlife).

I mainly shot birds here in South Brazil even if it sometimes shows up a jaguar or a ozelot, so to have the possibility to can crop a bit more like you can with a higher mp is an advantage for me. Yes, I think an R7 is likely to be a very good option - I hope to see it materialise.
      I don't have any issue keeping my 7D2 I really like that camera - very solid in hand. If wasn't sometimes frustrated by the crop when it's on my 400 f2.8, I wouldn't have moved to the R5.
      I used to solve the problem by changing bodies to the 5D3 but this was time consuming and risky (dust). So the R5 has neatly fixed this issue for me. It has the wider view and almost the same resolution for significant crops.

    Glad to see 2 of your videos pop up. It’s definitely been a while.
    Jumping to a different camera system can be a bit jarring. I used to shoot Nikon and I was set to get the R5, but my budget didn’t agree with me at the time, so I ended up going with a Fuji X-T4. I’m definitely not disappointed with my decision saying it feels like a Jack of all trades camera, but I’m going to guess that Canon or Sony might be a better choice for wildlife, especially with the snappy AF. Not sure how Fuji would work out for the way you shoot.

    I always value your gear reviews even though I'm "stuck" with Nikon. I too have been looking at using an alternative system, namely Canon or Sony. The mirrorless cameras are the big temptation and, sadly Nikon seem to be lagging behind. At the end of the day, I think Nikon will come up trumps as they will have to to compete. This is all academic for me though as the costs are too high. Great video Will! This is my first time watching a video of yours. I currently own the Sony a6400 and like you do wildlife and bird photography just in the US. Something that plagues me with the a6400 is the auto focus. It does not have great auto focus. Good but not great. Now with the new a6700 out that has changed, but I'm debating whether to go with that camera or with the Canon R6? I know the Canon only has 20 megapixels and the new a6700 I believe has 26 MP. But I think it's safe to say that megapixels don't make a camera per se. It's certainly an important factor to take into consideration, but everyone has a tendency to focus on that I believe. Was hoping you could give your opinion on the matter. (Canon R6 vs Sony a6700). By the way, I don't do much video work about 10% if that. Thank you.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel.
      I’m not a reviewer just review my own gear and choices. Obviously, switching systems is a big choice especially if one has a lot of lenses.
      Regarding the R6 and R6ii you have to remember that these are full frames and the A6700 is Apsc so they are considerably different in the way they are expected to be used.
      The key to using full frame for wildlife is the lens you use - they really demand long glass because they lack the crop and often the megapixels of APSC.
      The comparison between brands is even harder.
      I think the best place to start when choosing a system is always a review of what it is YOU shoot and where you want to be in 3-4 years.
      Once you have that, you need to look at the system lenses available.
      With regard to bodies most will be able to do the job these days and it comes down to your personal preferences.
      APSC tend to offer cheaper lens options or system paths. But if you look at cameras like the Fuji - great cameras but there’s no where to go with regard to lenses after a certain point for wildlife.
      Sony has a similar issue with 3rd party lenses and only the 200-600 and the very expensive 400 & 600. Of course, for very many photographers these work perfectly.
      Canon is different in that it has an incredible array of lenses both EF and RF will work. That opens a huge second hand market (don’t forget you have to sell your gear when you move on). Nikon is similar although often a little more pricey.
      OM is another important contender for wildlife. Good lenses at the top end - certainly for anyone wanting durable gear, small size and quality.
      I’d be happy to answer more specifically via email if you want to talk through the options.
      I have no experience with Sony but I’ve no doubt they cameras can do the job. If you have the lenses you need in the line up.
      For me second hand lenses and market is very important because the SA Rand is so devalued vs USD so I probably have different drivers. I NEED to get money back on sale and need a wide variety of used gear to get the pics I want. So I tend to pick a lens and then bolt whatever body will do the job on it.

      I'm using both, but only because of my 400mm - the R6 is sensational to use and basically the same in hand. With a 500 / 600 it's a killer wildlife camera.

    Great explanation on your reasoning for getting the R6. Getting too far in with a camera system becomes a problem when another manufacturer like Canon comes out with the R5 and R6. I wandered from Canon 7D to Panasonic GH4 to Sony A9 chasing better stills and low low performance and along the way discovered that shooting short bird and animal video clips add a new enjoyable dimension to photography, something the Panasonic is good at. Now that Sony has bought out the A!, while this matches or exceeds the still photography it doesn't have animal eye af in video and is twice the price of the R5. As a Sony owner I feel left wanting for a better way to get to 120fps at 4k but am reluctant to shell out for the A1 with no animal eye focus in video.

      Hi Mark, yeah I know what you mean! I sold my 500 & 300 and bought my 400 f2.8 specifically to shoot with a body I thought canon would make to match the Nikon D810 and they never did (5DsR had too few FPS)
      Been waiting a long time for the R5 to fill that gap.
      I guess it happened eventually. I think once one is tied into lenses it’s very hard to jump brands without losing a lot of money. So we have to trust that they will make the body we need eventually - I’m sure Sony will knock out a very good competitor at some stage that’s cheaper.
      On the plus side your lenses are all mirrorless mounts already. Mine feel quite obsolescent and dropped a lot in value.

    The superior performance of high ISO of low vs. High res sensors for stills has been debunked a few times on utube by different channels.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 года назад

      low light video seems better on the R6 and the one comparison I’ve seen between R6 and C70 the R6 was much better.

    • @frankanderson5012
      @frankanderson5012 2 года назад +1

      And did these ‘different channels’ specifically debunk the comparisons between the R5 and R6? I think you’re looking at a specific video which is out at the moment and generalises the comparisons. There are videos out at the moment that specifically compare the two cameras and gives the edge to the R6.
      If you have confirmation bias, RUclips will supply you with a video to whatever your beliefs are. As it stands, given the same level of technology, a lower pixel count will give a better noise performance than a higher one. That’s just physics as it currently stands with sensor technology.

      Yep it’s got a good set of features for creative video making.
      But video is a complex subject and your question is very broad.

    Thank you for this video. I remember suggesting that you look at Nikon mirrorless, however I can’t help feeling that you’re still looking at the (albeit immensely technical) headliners of the FF camera systems. As you know a camera is a box with a hole in and apart from Hasselblad (not perhaps recommendable in your case), there is a kind of majestic photography that might suit more than the built environment of Europe. For example:-
    ruclips.net/video/uWtTA7sKmHQ/видео.html true medium format?

      Hi Stephen, sorry for the late reply, the link caused the comment to get flagged by YT. I don't have any major complaint with my gear, it's great and fit for purpose.
      I do have a medium format system, albeit film. A Pentax 67 MLU which replaces a stolen (and uninsured because they won't insure vintage equipment here) Mamiya RZ67 ii which could take a digital back - I'm stuck with the lenses which I cannot sell over here...and now feel I should never have bought the Pentax either - I let the romance of medium format get the better of me!
      Insurance is a very real issue, around $250 a month just on camera gear. I feel a strong urge to minimise my kit as much as possible for the trips and goals I have planned. I definitely don't need more!

      Hi Will, that’s a hell of a pain in South Africa, with all that insurance and special marketing conditions! Clearly you have great FF gear and if you have the experience of MF, then I certainly can’t add anything further that would be meaningful.
      BTW I’ve adapted a RZ67 lens via helicoid adapter to my Nikon. I wouldn’t recommend it in your case, unless you have access to some unusual RZ67 glass that would turn the whole thing into a wild optical adventure!
      Meanwhile thank you for sharing all your thoughts and experience in your wonderful videos. I’ve only been to South Africa once but loved it.

    Canon M6II has double pixel density, smaller, easier to operate and much cheaper.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 года назад +1

      But I don’t really want an aps-c with double pixel density. Only 23 RAW buffer depth and different lens mount and batteries. It’s not efficient for me.
      I want an out and out low light wildlife machine that can take decent video. Match footage, grips, accessories and batteries and has the same button placement - I think the R6 is a perfect partner to the R5 here.
      I think we are approaching this from very different perspectives - I am trying to make my gear efficient not necessarily trying to save money. Nor am I recommending this to other people - it’s just my take for
      My own needs

    Question for you ...
    As your in a position to afford higher priced gear ... for what you capture on camera .
    If you couldn't afford higher priced gear like myself what would you be using instead ....would it be a Bridge Camera .. or a DSLR .. if your budget was 1,500

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 года назад +2

      I think you would need to really define the subject you want to shoot and how you will be doing it. Then you carefully select the gear to meet that need.
      I can’t define the set of gear you need without that info.
      I also started out using second hand gear. My first pro level camera cost me USD 150. I paired that with a 400mm f5.6 prime for usd 500 - both second hand.
      They were excellent and still compare to shots achieved with cameras like the 7d mark ii.
      So it can be done - but you need to carefully weigh up you subjects of interest and shooting style.
      My first thoughts would be to take advantage of everyone selling their optical dslrs and ef lenses right now as they move to mirrorless - for wildlife photography dslrs are still excellent propositions and can sometimes be better than mirrorless
      For example - I have no need whatsoever for the R5/R6 for photographing 80 to 90% of
      Mammal behaviour.
      Where they help is autofocus and frame rate for flying birds.
      There are good dslr options for flying birds too - many second hand options.
      I am still using my older dslr for wildlife photos alongside these cameras.
      I would avoid bridge cameras and cheaper mirrorless - they won’t cut it when you get serious.
      The options available now are far better than a few years back so it’s a great time for photography. There are so many great second hand cameras and
      Lenses around

      I currently use a Sony DSCHX350 My subject matter covers a wide range . Aviation , Ships/boats , Wildlife , Wildflowers and scenery .and Sunsets . Mainly use my mobile /tablet for capturing the setting sun . as the camera just can't cut it .
      Was Looking at getting a more expensive Bridge SonyRX10mrk 4 , Nikon P1000 but the reviews i've seen of both .have been lacking .. in honesty especially when it comes to proving the Zoom qualities of each ie ..capturing high flying passenger jets which i like to capture .
      Gave up on the Expensive Bridge option ..

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 года назад +1

      Micro 4/3 an option for you? World class stabilisation in some systems. Plenty of lenses around. 1.9 crop factor turns a 300mm lens at full frame into a 600mm at micro 4/3.
      Can adapt most other brands of lenses .
      Great for photo and video. Can share many lenses between brands - eg Panasonic lens can work on Olympus abs vice versa in many situations.
      Downsides merely increased depth of field v full frame and less good at dealing with noise (but this is marginal these days as we have
      Options in software)
      Also model depending - less confident autofocus.
      Brands include Panasonic and Olympus (best stabilisation out of any brand).

      Nope. That lens has the dof subject isolation of a 300mm f4, ie, not much. Cropping your field of view from a ff to a m43 sensor does not tighten your dof.
      Going m43 means he would miss out on the magic dof of my 85mm f1.2 - this lens is next level magic.
