With 20cv at my hipi did just fine. Thanks Pete!
Feel like the Becker BK2 would've been worth a mention. It's basically an ESEE 5 (which would be my "money-no-object" survival/rescue knife), but falls roughly between the ESEE and the CS SRK in price ($100-$250-$350) so it's a little more manageable to dump in the boot of a car compared to the ESEE. Not to mention, it's main cost saving "detractions" compared to the 5 (the plastic scales and cheap sheath), matter much less with a knife that you aren't planning on using/carrying regularly.
The cold steel srk-c has a flat grind, I like it better than the hollow. You should look at the Jakkaripuuko, for sun $100 they are damn near indestructible and come in different blade lengths.
Great video as always. Very solid, sensible list. I always enjoy hearing your opinions and the enjoyable, entertaining way you have of sharing them with us. Much respect.
Hultafors GK fantastic knife had one for about 10 years living in my bag, I'm the same I own 3 of them, my first I made into a Zero scandi after years of abuse, I hammered a Chaga mushroom off a tree with one as you say a couple of white marks on the handle but easy to remove.
In most States and Territories of Australia it's illegal to be in possession of a knife in public without a "genuine reason", and carrying for these sort of hypothetical scenarios would most likely not be accepted as a "genuine reason" by a court (because this would in practice allow knives to be carried publicly in almost any circumstance). And before anyone asks, a knife in your vehicle counts as "possession" for legal purposes, even if it's out of arm's reach or locked in a glovebox or the boot.
A normal citizen is only ever going to be pulled over by the police for speeding, or some traffic offence in which case there'll never search your car for any weapon, unless you look like a criminal . As the law goes I know your right But sometimes the law is an ass. Ps I live in New Zealand , and that law would be the same here.
I have a hultafors GK in ALL my kit bags. Bought one for virtually everyone I know. Dirt cheap here. £4.50 a piece, shallow convex reprofile makes it a pretty damn good "Bushcraft" knife. Feathers like a dream. Factory edge is dog 💩.......
My current car knife is just one of those cheap buck 110s with the plastic handles, probably the best knife you can just buy at the local stores here for $25 (at least, that's about what I paid). However, for the use cases you mentioned, I might consider the SRK, as obviously a plastic handled 110 isn't up to any kind of rigorous strain.
Cold Steel Magnum Warcraft Tanto in 3V with 12 inch blade for extra leverage to help pry shite open like a helicopter wreak or vehicle crushed by a tree or crumpled after a rollover, that was my theory anyway. At least added to the excuse... I mean... logical reasoning for carrying a foot long blade that looks like something a post apocalyptic comic book vampire slaying ninja would carry. Actually I genuinely think my logic was sound. I was being flown in helicopter or driving out into wilderness for firefighting and post fire mop up so the other purposes were as a machete in the viney crap along creeklines where fires edges often stall and smoulder, or to help break up smouldering timber (although chainsaw, axe and rakehoe do just fine for most of that most of the time... but shut up). So a I made my own category I guess: "Rescue Machete". Although I usually go with "Chopping Survival Knife".
You can still buy the SCHF9 which is a good buy for a big knife. If someone prefers something a bit shorter, they can buy the SCH26 (I have the fancier SCHF10 with Micarta handles) for a bit less. I see them for around $30 or less here in the USA. And if they prefer a straight blade Schrade has other models like SCHF36 or SCHF51. I see plenty of them as well as the Cold Steel SRK and the SRK Compact. The Hultafors was an excellent suggestion.

A couple of those are quite nice. My fixed blade go to is the Tops Lil Bro - I carry it horizontal at my front-center. (I have to slide my belt-buckle an inch or so to the side) It is completely concealed, very comfortable (even when sitting), and very easy to access with either hand. Granted, it does have a smaller length blade, but it is just long enough to be viable I think.

For a rescue knife you generally want a blade that's a little bigger. Though, I did literally cut a hole through a solid 2½" wood door on a cabin with my Morakniv Robust once,... made a fist sized hole in maybe 6 minutes through, enough to reach inside and unlock the door. I was seeking shelter from possible death by extreme cold, caught in a blizzard on a mountain.

Just carry a crowbar or a lockpick kit if you have the skills. Thats much better for entry. Even if you're trying to pry a door open the likelihood that you'll be able to pry a door is slim to none.
And I hate to be that guy, but none destructive entry is always best. Granny is gonna have to foot the bill for a new door, or in a worst case (even with consent) you may be liable for damages. First responders almost always have immunity from legal from damages done, but us regular folks don't.
@@liquiddw2 I have never seen a door that I *could* pry with a knife which I *couldn't* just kick down. I know not everyone has that capacity to the same level but 100% agree, knives are both terrible and extremely dangerous to use as serious prying tools.
