Backwards hat? Sunglasses? Skateboard? Yep, it’s Poochie. Meanwhile, William S Sessions told me that, “Winners don’t use drugs,” so I never touched them. Until AMA members started prescribing them for me. A more cynical person might suggest the AMA had ulterior motives to back an unlicensed anti street-drug game.
They couldn't call the game "Wally Bear and the Just-Say-No Gang" because that phrase was trademarked by the government. So if they weren't affiliated with any governmental bodies, what was the point of making a drug PSA game?
Parents would buy the game to get their children to play it. While they were playing it the they would stop huffing spray paint and injecting morphine between their toes, at least for a few minutes.
Me too! I’m glad we have another video with a more detailed backstory. Back then I doubt information existed for the AVGN to talk about it (even if he wanted to)
In fairness, Nintendo's lawsuit against Tengen was well justified. It wasn't just about bypassing the 10NES chip, it was about Tengen engaging in stupidly blatant industrial espionage while doing so. Whereas the system 'zap' system AVE came up with was legitimate reverse-engineering and legally protected.
They were 100% justified! It's not often, but on this one, Nintendo was totally right. Had Tengen done the reverse engineering on their own, they were in the clear. But they broke the law and lied to the U.S. Government. Pro-tip: Don't do that.
I'm 40 years old now, but I grew up with parents who had Marijuana and peyote who used them as medicinal as ointments/cream. I never exploited it. When I saw someone draw weed imagine, my first thought was why is that guy making medicine plant images. Smoked weed a handful of times, I'm whatever with it. Just makes me hungry. I've never used peyote other than back pain cream randomly a few times in my life.
These kind of anti-drug PSAs actually made things worse. It meant that kids who didn't know what drugs were now knew what they were. That's why you don't see them anymore they don't just not work they do positive harm
Always funny to see Nancy Reagan telling people not to do drugs given the rumors. And back in the '80s none of this was about stopping kids from doing drugs. It was just a moral panic used for political reasons
@infinidominion I don't think the just say no crap was that nefarious. But the entire drug war was. If you actually look at the history of the drug war it got started so that the Republican party in America could attack the left wing. We selectively enforce laws so while just about everybody was occasionally partaking of the devil's lettuce or some other now illicit substance it meant that you could easily send the police to arrest your political opponents for minor drug possession I suspect this is why Singapore has such brutal anti-drug laws. A lot of people do drugs to cope with mental illness of one form or another and can manage their mental illness because of it. That happens on both the left wing and the right wing but if you only enforce the law against the left wing you can basically prevent the left wing from ever getting anywhere
Also, Crossbow was another Exidy light-gun game (though in the arcades it was a light crossbow) where the shooter had to protect their party from various ne'er-do-wells trying to kill them. So, probably marginally more acceptable than Chiller.
@@AlmostSomething Checked on wikipedia. The company originally went bankrupt in 1985, had a 'change of leadership' and shipped its last proper game in 1988 before going into poker machines. So I was wrong, but also, kinda right. I think the first thing a new leadership would have done is license out the older properties for some quick revenue. I'm not sure that it would otherwise make sense to license a 1977 black and white driving game even if it was notorious at time of production.
I don't remember this at all. I'm sure the commercials were there, but all that anti drug stuff was always boring for me as a kid. I did go to a private school, so they did shove the anti drug in other ways beyond dare.
My parents were hippies, the weed was coming from inside the house

And Lance kickin the crap outta bicycling AFTER BEATING CANCER
To be fair, the people I know who never got into drugs are living good lives right now.

They mighta been on drugs

I was aware of this game because of the AVGN episode but nah I never played it as a kid

I found a wally bear t-shirt at goodwill last month! He's not sporting the shades or backwards cap though
AGCI uses the same boards as Color Dreams, but this deal was done before they created Wisdom Tree.
Omg I forgot about these "off label" games! I remember the "squeeze here" and yes I rented it from blockbuster

I have this game but must admit that I haven't played it yet. Hopefully my NES is not a lockout model.

Dudes with attitude/trolls of treasure island is a legit good puzzle game. Lousy music though.

Its almost like they introduced curiosity in children to build an industry set on a foundation of addiction

I don't know if the Exidy games were exactly 'licenced', the company had gone down the pipes by the mid eighties.
Also, Crossbow was another Exidy light-gun game (though in the arcades it was a light crossbow) where the shooter had to protect their party from various ne'er-do-wells trying to kill them. So, probably marginally more acceptable than Chiller.
Did not realize that! What I found said "licensed" but who knows.

"At a bear minimum" 🤔
