You can hear how good he is when he keeps it simple on the records and when he lets loose live hes an absolute monster. Actually all of them are like that. Thats why its worth listening to their records AND seeing them live.
Can't wait to see them here in Brazil in November! I used to watch that Yokohama show from the By The Way era when I was first learning bass and it inspired me so much, they are my favorite band for a reason

The song is brilliant. Of you're a multi instrumentalist, learn the bass and guitar, and you'll realize this song is GENIUS. Same with Scar Tissue. These 4 dudes are going in and out of eachother so effortlessly, that they make it sound easy.
Malcolm young basically perfected the less is more style. Just listening to him isolated shows how complex his supposed “simple” rhythm playing is.

That's my job as a drummer. I'm there to tell the story sung by the singer, pushed by the guitar, and backed up by the bass.

I have always loved Chad's humble approach to writing drums. He is capable of so much more, yet he always does exactly what the song calls for. No less and no more.

Rick Rubin helps reign him in too, Chad’s said in interviews (Howard Stern maybe) that Rubin often suggests “maybe save that for the live performances Chad” when he overindulges with excessive fills on recordings
I appreciate his strong inclination towards embracing simplicity, despite the potential drawbacks that come from being a drummer who needs to fill gaps.
This band exudes wisdom. I'm surr it's a mixture of a bunch of things - years of experience, surviving hard drug addictions, even just being around each other. But Rubin can take a bow for getting this bunch of psycho 20-year olds to focus and consistently record well-structured, thought out music.
The fact that they're holding back on the albums even adds to the excitement when you see them live, and they unleash (Frusciante in particular).
This track is probably their best example of less-is-more.

Man , to this day that snare sound off the entire Californication album is one of my all time favorites, just pops ! Anyone else likes “Easily”??
The outro is “easily” one of the most emotional pieces of music they’ve ever done.
As a musician myself I can't tell you how nice it is to hear that there was a previous - less successful - version of this song. We had a guy I'd never met before with no instrumental experience sitting in on a practice last week and he got drunk and got a bit bold, telling us we needed to start our song this way, and end it that way. Entire song was made significantly better because of it. Sometimes it just takes a fresh set of ears!

Love his style of drumming. Those ghost notes he plays quite heavy and it gives the song a bit of a military drumming sound and it sounds totally cool!

Very cool sound and harmony with the guitar throughout. And a chance to go hard during chorus.
I love how this is a song where like, you could teach people that don't know much of playing the drums, and even play yourself for fun. But then you watch him smash it out with all his years of playing it and it just sounds 1000x better

Love those little flourishes that Chad does before and during the solo. Also the fact that he doesn’t overplay and plays to the song accentuating it makes me appreciate the band even more.

Chad is just a good dude full of positive energy. He knows how to hit a drum too -- always sounds good.
And at the end of a show he’s all about peace and love and always thanks the crowd , real gentleman .
That little fill right after the gong, coming back to the verse after the solo, was friggin' AWESOME. Almost makes me wish the studio version had it! It gave the solo section a whole different character, and I loved it.
I had to stop and remind myself that that part isn't in the song...but should be!

I have been playing music for 35 years. Very rarely I have seen such raw talent, unbelievable. He makes it look so easy. But anyone out there who plays any instrument knows how difficult it is to overlay your own improv on any given track, especially when hearing it for the first time..... blown away, GENIUS
This is the first rock song that I fell in love with. Never gave that genre any of my attention until this song. I was in high school then and I couldn’t get enough of the song and the video. The guitar riff and drum had me at hello. Love this song!

All parts of the video are great! But listening to that "demo" from the original Californication song, it's just precious. This album is one of those that marked my teenage years, so it's very special to me. Chad is a great drummer; he is capable of a lot more, but he keeps things like they have to be on the music, always playing a lot with music/drums dynamics. It's one of the things I most appreciate about Chad's drums music. And in this video, that's very notorious to appreciate. That's amazing.
PS: I was watching this video on PC, and at the same time I had my TV On, playing a normal national TV show conversation. I've started listening to a second Californication song from nowhere at the same time. I thought that might be any sound effect on the video or something, but I've paused the video and it was playing precisely "Californication" on the TV show!!! Creepy 😬 🤣🤣ahahaha What a F*k*n coincidence !!! 😅😂

As someone who produces Reggae this was a delight to find that they tried the genre for Californication. Nothing suits like the song they waited for! Great video and Legend in Chad Smith!
His beautiful simplicity and the way he compliments the lyrics with his playing has always been an inspiration for me as a drummer. Not every song has to be busy and fast on the kit. Half time, ghost notes and thoughtful changes in forcefulness go a long way.

I hadn't really appreciated how funky the verse beat is until I saw this breakdown. The snare ghost notes are killer.
Im an amateur player since 14 yo (currently 30) and RHCP were the more impactful band on my life. Consequently Chad played a big part on finding my sound and much nore. Back then i had Young fat ego and i didnt recognized Chad as a great drummer, but now...How Boy, this man is Magic and still doesnt have enough credit. Every music is spot on and the Style is always there. Not Many can say the same. The King

As a metal drummer, I recently got into ghost notes within the last few years. Game changer 🙌
When I was 12 I picked up the Bassguitar for the first time in my life and RHCP has been such a huge part of my life ever since. Now, growing older, and seeing them I grow older, I just now understand how much they and their music really gave to me. In all those different phases of music I went through, from Death Core to American Folk, RHCP has always been the constant. Incredible band, incredible music. Loss for words, really.
Theres something about that verse groove that has memories locked in it for me. Like going into a time machine back to riding my bike around in the summer at 13, beginning to discover a world of rock music that shaped life forever.
His technique would probably sound too busy if anyone tried to duplicate it; but he’s so smooth and fits it all in so well

I had a friend growing up that said he never understood the appeal of Chad Smith's drumming. I was too young then to explain why I liked it, but knew there was something about the way he played that was unique. The feel, the energy, and the chaotic sense of notes lent to a very hard to replicate style and still does
Sorry, but if you friend doesn't appreciate Chad's awesome drumming, then he knows basically nothing about drumming.
I have come around to his style over the years. I used to think he was just a heavy-hitter with no style but he has a subtlety and a tightness with Flea that is remarkable

I think the thing that makes this song for me is the push and pull feeling on the crash hits at the end of each bar. It’s like every other one is pulling back and pulls you in

One of my all time fav drummers. He's not necessarily the most technical, but plays with such feel that it makes the sound even more unique and triggers something in our brains that makes it so harmonious. It's like a Jackson Pollock painting, it looks like chaos at first glance but makes 100 pcnt sense to our senses because it's in tune with the universe. This is what I feel when I listen to his drumming. An extremely technical drummer would not have the same effect for any Red Hot Chili Pepper songs.
in fact, he really is a very technical drummer as well, just check out some funk projects playing with him and also the stuff like Buddy Rich memorial concert.
@idleprepress Tony Royster Jr is my defn of technical. In a drum off, Chad would not be able to keep up with Tony bc Chad plays more with feel and really wasn't formally trained.
