How To Breathe When Swimming | Freestyle Swimming For Beginners

- Опубликовано: 6 янв 2018
- We breathe 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so why is breathing suddenly so difficult when we get in the water? Breathing and sinking legs are the two most common problems that swimmers actually face. So today, we're gonna look at tips of how to make you breathe a lot easier in the water and almost make it as natural as it is when you're on land doing activities.

So let's start off from where it can all go really wrong. When you take in that big gulp of air and try and hold onto it, your body really doesn't react to that well. Yeah weirdly, holding your breath actually makes you feel like you're more desperate for air cause the buildup of carbon dioxide in your lungs and blood will trick your mind. So once you've taken that breath, start exhaling as soon as your face is back in the water and there should be a constant stream of bubbles known as trickle breathing.
So how do you get that breath in? So when you're swimming you want to stay streamline as possible but then tilt your head just enough that you can get that breath in.
Yeah, it's about the timing so when your arm is going just past your head, that's when you should be rotating on the opposite side to breathe. Now the key is to not turn your head too far like Mark said so ideally you just want to look to the side of the pool or at Mark, preferably, not up at the sky. Well that's probably enough of us talking about what you should be doing, let's get on to how you should do it. So we've broken it down into some drills and we're gonna start off by taking the stroke right back to the basics and just the kick but don't panic if you struggle on kick. Just pop some fins on and you'll find this exercise easy. This is a really straightforward one. It's gonna be a side kick with your arms down by your side. If you're swimming along next to the wall I want you just to be facing the wall and then turning your head slightly to breathe and then you can flip round to make sure you do it on the other side coming back.
So six kicks, one stroke. You're basically gonna take one stroke and then kick six times on one side and that's to teach you constant breathing on the surface of the water before taking another stroke and switching sides.
Well now just starting to build the stroke back up, you can add in one arm. There's quite a few variations of this. You can start off with one arm out in front, you're swimming just say with your right arm breathing to the right side but then to make it a little bit harder put your left arm down by your side, keep swimming with your right, breathing on this side but then when you've got that mastered you can actually rotate to the other side and breathe over there as you would when you're swimming.

As a beginner I think many of these drills are great for people to refine their technique (BUT are already good swimmers). They all depend on you already being good at propelling yourself through the water (to keep your legs from sinking) and having good stamina (maybe using a float between your legs). For a beginner like me I find them almost impossible to do or to do for more than a few strokes. Perhaps I need to look at more beginner videos.
As a beginner, I find that using fins totally changes the game :) With them I'm able to do these kind of drills.
The best beginner drill is the last one. Watch to the end.
Yoy are right.
When I try to do 6 kick 1 stroke side drill,i am Unable to lift mouth out of the water like these people do,my legs float and even the body but not enough to come out and breath
My goodness. Same here. Ive started 3 days ago. Im still struggling with breathing..
I’m taking my first swim lessons at age 35. And it gives me extreme anxiety having to coordinate all the movements AND stick my mouth out the water to breath. I feel like I have a near drowning experience every lesson so far.
I feel out of breath just by watching this. Lol
😂
Watch Navy SEALS doing pool comp. You'll feel like you're drowning xD
Shut up idiot your sooooooo lazyyyyy robenie the robber ha ha ha ha
Ruqiya Ahmed that’s rude, you act like that online kid. But when someone says that in real life I bet you get scared ruqiya peeya
hhhhhhh
Been attending lessons and watching videos like these makes me realize how bad my teacher is. No wonder I’m still struggling after months of classes! We don’t do drills of any basic skills and there is never any correction of mistakes. You do a couple of lengths (badly, floundering, gasping, arms and legs all over the place) and she just nods and tells you the next stroke to do. Thank god for RUclips, I might actually stand a chance of understanding the techniques at least!
OMG THIS IS SO TRUE
Update: This video literally made all the difference. Cracked the rhythm of the breathing and the correct way to turn to get a breath without jerking up out of the water, and now I can do lengths of front crawl without a problem. I’m still building stamina (I can only go once a week) and improving technique in general, but my teacher said she was amazed by my sudden improvement. Her exact words were “Honestly I didn’t think you’d ever be able to do it!” which…EXCUSE ME?!…but also, neither did I, especially with her “teaching” me! hehe
Great vid, same stuff I teach my triathletes :)
One thing I missed: most of the rotation 'to air' should come from shoulder/body rotation, with the neck only turning a litle bit. That sets you up much more comfortably for your next breath
Body rotation also happens to make your stroke longer, AND engage your pecks and lats more :)
Thanks for this tip.
I'm trying to get my mouth clear for air but often take in water and choke and have to stop.
@@peaceandjoy7954 have you learned
I am a total airhead, I am gonna have to watch this video 10 more times to partially understand what the hell they just said!
It wasn’t just you.... they RUSHED everything they were trying to explain.
Wow, what great advice! Never would have thought of that!
@@llewxamej65 Agreed. And the music was annoying.
I feel myself choking and accidentally inhaling water through my nose XD
Eh. Once i was on middle of a 7 meter deep pool approx 3 meter deep when i wrongly breathed from my nose. Then i slowly hot myself up . Never panick or u will have high risk of drowning
Yes I've done similar And been sick as well
The tip is to breathe behind you instead on your side. We have a video explaining this in our channel. Check it out.
@@RocketSwimming I believe this too. I noticed I accidentally started doing that when I was practicing my swimming and I found it effective for me and kept it up. I notice I get water if I simply look to the side

"why is breathing so difficult when we get into the water?" 🤔...
Scientists are still baffeld
😅🤣😂
GYMS HATE HIM....
Because of density and pressure of water
😂😂😂😂😂
I swear this is sooo hard to do in the pool. Wish I could watch this in the pool.🧜♀️🧜♀️🧜♀️
fascinating.. i've been a terrible swimmer most of life, but i've recently taken an interest in getting better at it. never realized there was so much technique involved in this activity. i think these tips will definitely help and i cant wait to try them.
I think 1 arm drill is perhaps the best single drill for freestyle. It helps with so many things - breathing, hip position and rotation, catch, kicking... I think Andy Potts has said it's the only drill he uses!
I breath water while freestyling not air
rotate your body and head when you wanna inhale but don't stick your head up look down
@@imdaking1337 it dont happen now I am good at freestyling now but thanks for ur reply 😊
Lmao this made me laugh
Gaming Buddy hahahaha same lol
@Chandler Muriel Bing first of all stop getting scared i was scared too but i stopped it, now when you freestyle with head in water you turn your head towards your any shoulder like how you look back when standing just like that and breath and come to your original position again and continue this process, you dont have to breath to much like for like 2 secs not more than that you will get enough breath till that time and when you bring head towards shoulder you take breath and while returning to water quickly close ur mouth or else water will go in your mouth.
This has been the most difficult thing for me. Now I don't stop kicking when I breathe, but I still don't have a solid breathing pattern. I have to breathe every stroke. Thanks for this video!
Your doing it all wrong, you shouldn't kick constantly with frontcrawl/freestyle, you should use your arms fully extending constantly, and every two pulls with your arm you do 2 kicks really powerful.
Im an ex professional kid swimmer, trust me, it's perfect for stamina swimming, and if you do spirits reply and ask and I'll explain good freestyle technique.
@@CatsInDungarees Me, my problem is that water enters my nose and it’s hard to breath after. Can you help ?
@@aperson1726 blow out water from your nose(you should see bubbles) while in the pool and breathe when you lift your head to breathe, it may seem difficult at first but over time it becomes natural. Make sure not to breathe in while your head is in water and you should have goggles because the bubbles might block your eyes! Hope this helps :)
@@ayesteriia Danng thank you very much 🙏🏽 I never expected a response this fast. Thanks, I’ll try.
@@aperson1726 np, I struggled with your same problem for a while so I’m glad I was able to help :)
Hey thanks guys this was so straight forward! Gonna use these tips.
I actually quite enjoy such videos,so straightforward
breathing and sinking legs are the most common for decent swimmers, for me: not being able to do more than 50 meters of crawl/freestyle before having to switch for 25-50 meters of breaststroke :(
but WHEN I do freestyle, those two are the most common indeed xD
Wouldn't mind a video how to build a (basic) swimming condition :) altough it's probably just a bit like building a running or cycling condition...
I recon your strugle with those two issues is the reason you can't do more than 50, hahaha
Tips for sinking legs;
-pull buoy. All day every day.
-also try regular yoga/stretching to limber up that lower back and those glutes hamstrings
-do some googling for 'front quadrant' freestyle. That should keep your relative weight more in the front of your stroke, hence your less weight will push your legs down
-also look down, not forward if that's an issue
Breathing I feel is more a 'comfort' thing. Everyone can do it, as long as your not stressed about it.
Remembering to exhale is key, you gotta make room for new air ;)
Have a Google for Ruth Kazez 0-1 mile or 0-700m. It's a case of trying to push yourself a bit more each session
haha I learned how to swim yesterday and can only swim like 5 meters until i'm to tired, I think it is because i try to hold my breath
Loved the 3,5,7 strokes!! You guys are awesome!!! Will definitely put this to practice this week!
Great video guys, breathing is my major nightmare with swimming, or the lack of it!!! Some good drills for me to try.
phill whitlam So did it work?
Clear and concise and just what I needed. All instruction should be so well done.
if i dont drown..its been a good swim :)
Relatable.
EXACTLY!!!!
My problem is that I end up drinking water rather than breathing air 😬😬 just don't know how much to tilt my head
Edit: After knowing that so many of you relate to this, I am hoping that this video helps you out a little bit more :) ruclips.net/video/AEpHB-9jUHQ/видео.html
BRUH SAME. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE😭
@@_Idk_519 omg I me too I thought I was the one, you see when I go to a hotel me and my family go to swim I swim also and my dad teaches me how to swim and my dad holds me so I don’t get drowned because the pool is so deep and I learned a little bit now and I didn’t tilt my head I just go in the water and I breath and I ended up drinking salty water
Use swim cap or they have dread lock swim caps there much helpful and u move faster I use the dreadlock one
@@jordanwalker3051 wth do swimcaps have to do with breathing
@@proxyzov swim caps reduce drag, which will let you go faster. Once you are fast enough there should be an air bubble at your mouth when you go to breathe.
You just watched the cooking show where they demonstrate 10 dishes in 5 minutes.
It's a speedrun!
2024 anyone?
My problem isn’t about not managing to get air or breathing in too much air, it’s that I’m out of breath after 100metres and have to stop. Breathing out under water feels too difficult, I’m sure it must come automatic after a while...still waiting for that.
Pace is way too fast to follow. Remember, this is for beginners.
Thanks for the feedback 🙂
I agree totally! I had to watch this twice just to get a few of the instructions. This video seemed very rushed, and with too many closeups of you guys swimming.... prob should have shown what the side-swimming practices should look like.
The swim videos are a little more difficult to follow compared to running and cycling.
Agreed, I seldom give a thumbs down for a video. Production is good but not good for people who are starting or even intermediate like myself. I think I would've appreciate seeing the actual drills.
@@gtn So thats your responce? Dont let me down.. Sad as hell to see this from your team, LAME LAME LAME
I started learning how to swim last year and these tips helped me so much .I will be a real good swimmer one day but it is practice, practice, practice, practice that will make it happen.😊
Glad to hear our videos have been helpful to you! 🙌 Keep us updated with your progress, we'd love to hear how you're getting on 😊
Thank you for this. I find it helpful. For those who claim it's too fast. Pause or re-watch as many times as you like.
I always need speed when I swim and the thing slowing my down is my breathing so this helped thank you!
Nice video ! Thanks ! Try to practice these drills in calm water with few people in the pool for more sensations and relaxation
Everyone says you should exhale through your nose so you don't panic and can swim for longer. But I wear a nose plug so I have to inhale and exhale through my mouth. Will this affect my swimming?
Not at all, I exhale through my mouth and it depends on what suits you.
Really good information from beginners to more intermediate swimmers, thanks for sharing with us!
No problem! we're glad its helpful!
Thank you both, I can swim but my breathing is so weak. While my Brest stroke can go on forever. I will implement these steps. 🙏🏾
I used to swim competitively when I was 13-15 years old. I'd basically swim a complete hour with barely any breaks three times a week.
I'm starting to train for a triathlon and thought because I used to swim a lot it would be easy. Went to the pool last week and set off to do a couple laps. Halfway through my first I stopped because I felt like I couldn't breathe 😅 Also I never breathed out my nose always my mouth so this is so strange. Even just exhaling under the water with all the bubbles was such a distracting/uncomfortable sensation that I'm going to have to get used to again. After practicing for a bit I was able to do a full length comfortably (had to slow it down a lot) but would get water in my mouth sometimes when I went to inhale which I never remember happening before. Also the water going up my nose was super annoying as well. Another thing I'd have to get used to.
Question for anyone who can answer. In triathlons do people usually do front crawl breathing out in the water like the video showed? Seems like it'd be harder to do in open water and mine will be in a lake.
NOTE
1-Better stamina would make breathing easy for you. To compare stamina, swim across the pool in one breath, that distance should increase every week. If you are not able to increase, something is wrong.
2-Floating should be good. Our mind and body is habitual of vertical position on ground but we need to be horizontal in water, so floating should become a natural thing for your body in water. It will reduce the need of energy for legs to keep the body afloat. Thus, less oxygen needed, efficiency increased.
Awesome .thanks guys.very helpful
I have a lifeguard pre-test today I’m so nervous wish me luck🤞🏾🙏🏾
LITWRALLY I HAVE TO SWIM 12 LAPS AND IM WATCHING THIS ...
How did it go?
HazelnutHoney it went better then the first time around, I had to do training twice & I was dying the first time around but I paced myself for the second time around ... also they don’t really care so I stopped 2 laps early
Why do I run out of breath when I do this. I can run, bike and sing but the breathing while doing front crawl is so tricky for me.
@RebeccaJones
@Rebecca Jones
One thing that may cause this is not exhaling FULLY before taking in a next breath. Meaning, don't get tempted to breathe too early- every certain number of strokes. Only inhale when you're completely out of air and CRAVING a breath. For me, that meant breathing out slowly & evenly, and then when I thought I wanted to inhale, pausing and slightly squeezing out a little wheeze to get that last bit of air before inhaling. I found that helped me go from hyperventilating to feeling like my airflow was balanced. In short: inhale a normal amount, but exhale smoothly to the point you can't give any more. I hope this helps. This alone helped me go from swimming a couple laps lightheaded, to being able to swim for an hour straight. 🤗 ❤️
Me too yet Backstroke easy
Thank you for keeping your videos short and to the point!
I think this video clearly shows the 'bow wave' your head creates and into which you should be taking your breath. A shame it was not mentioned, but a good shot all the same :) thx.
excellent video...... thank you so much! Breathing esp. during freestyle is my most difficult too. The C02 concept makes total sense now. I do breathe out but not slowly and I can't wait to get back in the water and practice this technique. I also breathe only from one side and plan to practice both sides. It's truly all about technique. Thanks again.
I heard this and now I'm the best swimmer in the world I mean the first place swimmer still from 7 years old😊😊😊 thank you to this RUclips channel
that is great, keep up the great work! (and never be on youtube alone yes? it is not a place for kids who want to swim well and be champions.)
This is so informative & well done, TY.
Watching this as I parked outside the pool. Thanks for the tips!
Mark looks like Steve Carell from The Office if he would have left Dunder Mifflin to become a swimmer.
They said 6 kicks one stroke.... when I got in the water, all I cared was just float and breath.... I totally forgot how many kicks... I just kept kicking....
Me too😅
Great tips thank you
Exhale continues beyond water. That's right. Thank you
Omg, thank you so much for your tips!
If I get the slightest bit of water in my mouth I end up swallowing it and choking, then I look like a total toddler gasping on the side of the pool. Ive got to get this down
Thanks for giving the drills. But I think there must have been more time spent showing the actual drills. The video of the six kicks and one arm drills were too short for me to completely understand the drill.
With the help of these tips today I doubled the number if lengths I could do. Thanks. Hopefully I will reach the 1.5k soon so I can take on my first triathlon.
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful. You could enter a sprint distance event which is only a 750m swim.
It's olympic or 70.3 or nothing. Love the challenge
Thank you.
Beautifully explained
Very clear demonstration. Thanks.
My head hurts while trying to breathe through my mouth and exhaling slowly nose or mouth. Even when walking or sitting. Any tips to feel relaxed when breathing through the mouth? I’m training for half iron man and this is giving me the most trouble
Thanks!
Just what i needed, thanks.
Any tips for breathing in open water? To see where you are going
Thank you SO much
Superb video, thank you guys!
I find this super easy to do in the pool but it's significantly harder in open water. Not being able to see through the water makes it different for me-any suggestions? (I don't do much open water training because I live where it's cold!)
Did you ever sort this out? I’m a new swimmer and it’s very hard. I want to do a triathlon in a few months

I really struggle with my breathing in the pool, thanks for the video
you guys are awesome!
Lmao Heather. Second nature, my a..s. Breathing, taking mouth out is the most complex technique, I am struggling with since 3-4 months. Hope a day I'd learn. Thank you guys

@@gsooch Did you guys eventually learn how to breathe? Currently facing similar struggles
Always great videos.
I’m gonna use this for running 😂 hopefully it works, should probably be easier since I’m not in water
Ok then but not all that easy too do it take time but good too get better thank you Chris from UK
I went to my local tidal pool for the first time and discovered how much I can't swim. I couldn't cope with even putting my face under water for more than a split second. I was getting a kind of cold immersion response and just felt a bit of panic. I used to at least be able to submerge my head doing a quick breast stroke but the cold made it feel I possible to breathe in a relaxed way. So I swam like an old lady for 15 mins and went home.
It helps to try to relax as you swim
thank you
I don't understand how you don't get water in your mouth, in the video it seems like you have your mouth open even below the water. I was thought to exhale through my nose, inhale through my mouth, I've tried what you do but water always pours in
How much air do you replace with a single breath? If the breathing on land is 100%, what percentage will it be when swimming?
U only breathe how much u need so %75 sort of
That is really helpful but I was hoping for more explantion
Now that the season of duathlons and triathlons is starting, will you make a race news show as GCN is doing? Like so much your videos, keep going like this, you're doing great!
molatio17 They already recap important races in the GTN show, I don't think it would be necessary.
You mentioned leg sinking, is there a video coming for drills on that?
Watch this space!
I am 40 year old and last year only I had learnt swimming a little bit.. my problem is that I am sinking quite low in water....when I turn my head sideways so as to breathe it is still inside water and I have to turn a bit more to breathe and as a result of breaks my momentum... Moreover I get tired too easily,, I can just swim 20 m at a stretch.. please advise..
Perhaps you are bending at the knees way too much unsteady of keeping legs straighter and tighter with small fast kicks with little splash.
Consider working with short fins to get a feel for the water and get yourself up higher in the water. Practice your kicks on the pool wall.
Also try to learn to do streamline position and glide. RUclips has a lot of swim videos out there to learn about swimming from. Hope this helps.
I have the same issue, I'm assuming since you've made this comment you've remedied the issue, what did you do to fix it?
@@KratosMayhem yaa now I m in better position.. previously hand movements and head movement both were different .. I was looking more backwards than sideways.. presently movement of hand is synchronised with slight rotation of body and movement of head as well..
@@optionwala23 just to clarify when you say your hand movement is in sync with your head and body do you mean that the coordination of your breath follows like this?
Your body rotates towards the breathing side and your head turns sideways as the extended arm begins the pull and returns back before your arm finishes the recovery? Also do you rotate more on your breath strokes than your non breathe stroke and do you exhale all your air out and take big breaths or leave a bit in the tank and take smaller ones?
I'm hoping that with enough trial and error by the end of the week I can swim freestyle without having to hold my breath and stand up to breath that way I can actually swim laps and improve other areas of my stroke. I have a stroke that is not the best but moves me forward in the water and I can go pretty far on one breathe.
I just have to add the icing on the top that is this breathing business. Would love to be in a nice warm pool this winter than only being able to run in the cold or opting for boring treadmill runs.
@@KratosMayhem theoretical your description of stroke is very right but to do it practical in a pool it has taken me about six to eight months.. I swim more relaxed with big and short breaths alternatively.. previously I was trying to copy Olympic swimmers which I cannot at this stage. I am not in favour of holding breath for too long..
I have tried and tried but I just can't learn to breath bilaterally. Otherwise my swim is very efficient. How important is bilateral breathing really?
It helps for body roll and most people that only breath to one side can have an off balanced stroke which means they pull too much to one side. It is also nice for race day so you can breath between waves, not have the sun in your eyes every breath as well as keeping tabs of people on both sides of you when don't need to sight.
no vary if you look at the pros a lot of them only breath out of one side
Learning to breath on both sides, when needed is useful if you can do it. As mentioned above, it helps avoid glare from the sun on occasions, or if on a sea swim, avoid getting a mouthful of sea water on every breath!
Having said that I breath to one side on every stroke. It helps keep relaxed and therefore avoids los of energy through unconscious tensing of your body.
But then my legs don't sink and most of the time my mouth is only just clearing the surface so no loss of streamlined body position.
Important? Nope.
_Useful?_ *Hell-to-the-yes.*
Best vid on yt✅
im learning by trial and error i learned a lot from your channel however as im exhaling i hold my breath then exhale faster then come back up
Hello I’m from India and I’ll be trying this soon hope it works out for me because I always have problem
breathing naturally and please make a video on floating .Thank you
I tried these drills in the pool this morning but found myself struggling to get my mouth to the surface. For the side kicking drill perhaps I was too slowly? Or waiting till my lungs were too empty and so I was too leaden?
For 6 kicks one stroke, does a stroke count as both arms? Could you show a video of how fast people are moving when doing the first drill and a few rounds of the second drill?
Thank you!
