Lol, its 7:26 AM. My exam starts at 10am, just doing a quick review again, even tho I have watched the video before, but language and writing is not my strong suit at all. Thank you very much for all your videos and work you've done to help students like us. It's much appreciated!!!
Your videos are incredible, especially for teachers like me, thank you! Are there similar videos for AS English? I’ve searched on Taughtly, but can’t seem to find any? Your help in this regard will be greatly appreciated xx
Hello! Thanks so much for your nice comment. At the moment, I only have IGCSE First Language English and IB English A Language and Literature. However, next school year I'm going full time to making resources & tutoring, so I've been looking to branch out. I do examine Cambridge AS General English too, if that's what you mean? That's high up on my list! Then also English Lit courses for specific texts appropriate for the 16-18 age range for both A Level and IB, eg The Great Gatsby videos.
Is the repetition of the same words alright? like you used the words, "means", and "connotations". I won't get penalized for using those two words to describe each image right? Or should I try to make each meaning, connotation and effect unique?
Great question! It's absolutely find for Q2(d) to be repetitive in your sentence structures/phrases because you don't get marked for writing style at all for that question. They're only marking you for the quality of your ideas and your understanding of the text. Actually, since the examiner is looking for quote, meaning, effect, I'd actually really appreciate a student directly saying the words in the mark scheme since it'd make the job easier! Of course, for other questions, like summary writing and extended response, where you do get writing marks, you should avoid being repetitive. But no worries for this question!
Another question that I have is, what if my chosen quotation happens to only be a fragment of the phrase written in the mark scheme? I wrote about the fact that the "fat cats prowl", and i described that the word fat shows how they are well-fed , signifying the wealth of the city, and the word "prowl" to show that even the cats are spoiled, since even after being fed, they are looking for more, which hints at the personalities of the people in the city as well. Is that fine?
Hi! So if you get part of the quote but not the full quote, you will still be credited for it but the examiner will put a "carrot" mark to show it's a partial quote. This wouldn't be a really big deal as long as you're still showing good understanding of the quote's meaning and effect, especially if the quote is super long anyway. For fat cats - good point about wealth of the city because of fat and I really like your point that prowling shows that they aren't hungry yet still looking for more food. I think I'd really like to see you make it clear that this shows the greed, or excess that the wealthy people in NY city have to push you up higher. So you've analysed the quote lovely, got an effect, now what does that show? Why has the writer done it? What are their intentions? (--> to critique the greed of the wealthy)
Hello miss! In one of the papers I've practiced, i picked the quote 'streams of sweat trickle down my neck', and I said mentioned that the use of 'streams' likens the sweat to a flowing river to show that she is sweating alot. However, this comparison isn't on the mark scheme. Would an examiner marking it give it as a logical and correct point? Also, I made a point about how trickle and streams are conflicting and in juxtaposition because one indicates that she is sweating greatly while trickles slightly dwindled this effect, but this wasn't in the mark scheme. Would this count too? Thank you so much!!!!
Hello! That makes logical sense to me. Stream/river shows you understand meaning; the amount of water implied shows you understand the effect. A little hard since I can't think which past paper you're referring to, but in theory I think I'd give you credit for both explicit and implicit meaning here.
@@Taughtly It was October/November of 2022 where the main character Veda was dancing infront of her teacher. Regardless, thank you so much for your response! I just have another question. For the vocab section of both question 1 and 2, if the my answer is a synonym of the words in the mark scheme, but not the exact word, am I awarded the marks? For example, in one of the papers it read: Yes, this room was definitely on the list of modernisation. While the weather was warm, outdoor dining was preferable. Meaning of preferable: Mark scheme: better, more desirable, best choice My answer: more suitable Would I still be awarded? Again, thank you so much for your help and taking the time to respond.
@@pvptopic2113 yes you would be for that example. Not all possible words are covered on the mark scheme so similar synonyms are also credited ☺ mark scheme is guidance, not the final word basically.
@Taughtly : The overall effect of the paragraph conveys how easy the Tough Mudder appeared to be for Sammy, showcasing through his swift and flexible movements as he made his way through the obstacles. Firstly, the image of Sammy 'transforming into a graceful dancer amidst the chaos' means he was turning into a graceful dancer through his elegant movements, despite the unruly situation. The adjective 'graceful' connotes stylishness and elegance, suggesting Sammy's dexterity and proficiency in performing, which implies that his sleek movements seemed rhythmic, almost as if he was dancing. Secondly, the image of Sammy's 'steps [being] light and nimble' means his steps were agile. The word 'light' connotes easy movement, almost like a feather swirling in air, and 'agile' connotes Sammy's acrobatic movements, suggesting that the Tough Mudder seemed to be like a breeze for him. Lastly, the image of him 'soar[ing] through the mud' means that Sammy almost flew past the mud. The word 'soared' connotes the movements of a bird, flying with precision and ease, thus suggests how swift and vigilant he was as he landed precisely on his feet.
Ah! None of those things are necessary and often throw students off track. I'd recommend to use my structure for the real exam. Your teacher's technique is correct for literature - are you also doing literature igcse? To get around this, you can still say "the use of this simile MEANS that... The word '...' has connotations of... The effect of this image is to suggest that..." So still say language device/word class to keep teacher happy, but ensure you're always saying the explicit meaning and implicit effect of your quotes to hit the mark scheme.
For question 2(d), I recommend roughly 25 minutes. If you are quick at the short answer questions, however, you might be able to buy yourself 30 minutes. No more than 30 max. (10 planning + 10 per paragraph).
