Thank you for this video, I love Pagodes, it's so beautiful it makes me cry every single time I hear it.
Anyway, for people who say it doesn't have Chinese influence - I think it does, when it comes to scales. Overall aesthetics is very Japanese, rhythm on the other hand is influenced by gamelan obviously. So I think it's an artistic interpretation of what Orient and orientalism were at the time. Remember that knowledge about Far East wasn't as easily accessible at the time. Also, I think "Masques" is even more inspired by gamelan music, but for some reason noone ever mentions that.

Painting and Debussy: “In La Mer, Debussy drew inspiration from the famous Edo-period woodblock print by Hokusai showing match-stick boats being tossed violently between monstrous waves. It’s a striking, kinetic, tumultuous image; it’s also highly naturalistic and, in a quintessentially Japanese way, defined as much by its negative space as by the turbulent action depicted. Debussy even went as far as to include a part of this image on the cover of the 1st edition of the score (below).“.....

..."a second theme, which is not Chinese...."(!). Please, NOTHING is Chinese in this piece! Debussy was dazzled by the Indonesian (Javanese and Balinese) Gamelan orchestras heard at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1889. Equally, water plays no part here; the Gamelan has a number of frenzied decorative figures which Debussy depicts very well.
