An expensive shop although Waitrose is seen as a premium supermarket brand here. Guernsey needs a Lidl or Aldi, that will get prices down with a bit of real competition. I never shop in Waitrose except at Xmas as they have a better sea food range for Boxing Day treats. I shop at Sainsbury which usually price matches to one of the discounters also has discounts if you have a Nectar loyalty card
More generally Guernsey is very expensive. I was there in mid-June at the Duke of Normandy for 6 nights B & B no evening meal which cost more than 7 night half board at the 4 star beach-side hotel on Lanzarote my wife and I like to stay in. Unlikely to return to Guernsey at those prices. My sister and I were there for a particular reason to remember my late younger brother., including a trip to Herm when I was last there in 1972 swimming at Shell beach with my siblings,
The only cheap thing in Guernsey were the bus fares which are a real bargain

We thought we were going to get some cheaper stuff when Morrisons came over. Turns out they are one of the most expensive places.

I find it funny that Waitrose is considered expensive...yet Alliance is far more costly

Some pretty premium stuff in your trolley - I think the price is comparable to what we pay here in Cornwall.
If you want lower quality stuff, there's always the Iceland Store in St Martins.

@@davidc6997 They’ve not long done a price comparison on the island and Iceland was the most expensive and Waitrose/M&S being the cheapest for a trolley of basic essentials!

Just back in UK after 3 weeks in Guernsey. I found the island much more expensive than the UK. I did most of my shopping in Alliance - Its seems much dearer now than Waitrose. Stocked now with Sainsburys items and around a minimum of 25% dearer.
Found hedge veg more economical where available.

Waitrose is a very posh place to shop in England . Most household will stick to Aldi or lidi for their food shopping. For the same amount of items that you got from that place , I would say it will cost around £80-£90 in the uk.

Hi Ross - yup, it was a pricey shop! But it was Waitrose, which is high-end price (and usually quality) wise; and being on an island, most of the stuff has to be shipped in, which bumps prices still further. And food prices have been rising steadily in the UK as well. As others have said, there's not much competition over there - main food shops seem to be Waitrose and M&S, which are not renowned for being cheap. I'm guessing you could get most of that stuff cheaper by shopping around, but that takes time and petrol. On balance, I think you've done pretty well given the produce in your trolley.

Gosh Ross....thats rather expensive. Such a shame there are no Lidl/ Aldi on Guernsey, especially if you have a young family.

Very interesting, thanks Ross! Comparable to Austria, on premium supermarket level even a bit cheaper (apart from the toilet paper!). But we have these large discounters such as Lidl, so you can go a bit cheaper over here. All in all not that bad!

It makes sense for me to move there if im doing remote or a Business owner otherwise it doesnt seem to be worth it. It beats the caymen islands £15 for fish fingers(youngs or birds eye) Giernsey is cheaper than I expected I wonder if jersey is cheaper.

What stores or apps are available to download, where one can do online shopping and delivery ? Thanks for these insightful videos. 😊

      Hi,
In Guernsey, you can get food delivered from several places. The Co-op offers online grocery delivery through their website. CookShopDeliver is another option, specializing in delivering high-quality, pre-prepared meals. Marks & Spencer also offers delivery services, so you can order a variety of groceries and ready-made meals from them.. there is probably more but that’s the ones I know about👍

Hi Ross I guess there really isn't much in it, some items more expensive, some not, I would be buying more fruit and veg than you did though. Also I would buy Ibuprofen at 500 for $35, but you don't seem to have large quantities like that, I also think that you have more variety in packaged food than we do, but I found it more interesting. I don't know about prices but all that plastic - everything pre-wrapped - wouldn't be allowed here in NZ. Fruit and veg are all loose and you put them in paper bags and weigh them. Your total would be nearly 300 NZ dollars - a lot of money!!!

Just checked prices for most but was strange everything in UK Waitrose was cheaper until got to toilet rolls then every thing was a dearer.

I've always noticed it seems like the refridgrated/frozen products are always about 10% more expensive but when you get around to Alcohol/Soft Drinks/Toiletries etc they tend to be cheaper. I would assume it's due to the extra cost of transporting a refrigerated trailer plus the additional wages they need to pay in Guernsey which are higher than the UK.

Hi Chris, I live in Canada and the price of toilet rolls has got stupidly high, I keep looking for the sprinkles of gold. They keep trying to brainwash us here in to believing that the price of groceries is dropping, but when you buy so much of the same thing each week you only have to look at your previous receipt to know that is not true. I have been buying my toilet paper online for months now because the deals are better and in most cases shipping is free. Lesley, Victoria, BC. Canada.
