  • Our Narrowboat Quest - Stuck in Savick Brook
    We start our journey today at our mooring between bridges 24 and 23 on the Lancaster Canal. We are about 40 mins from the Ribble Link Navigation. The surrounding area is mainly rural with the odd farm dotted beside the canal.
    There is a tight 90 degree bend into the Lancaster Basin where there are 3 staircase locks to take us down into Savick Brook. The original tall sculpture called Gauging the Ripple ( locally known as the Ribble Piddler)which overlooked the first lock and marked the beginning of the Ribble Link was replaced in 2014 by the one you can see today and is dedicated to the navvies and engineers who built the canal.
    We descend the remaining three locks in Savick Brook, making our way with some difficulty hrough the narrow, shallow, winding and muddy brook towards the River Ribble.
    We turn right onto the River making our way against the tide until we reach the open stretch of water and Aslands Lamp where we make a hard left hand turn into the River Douglas and head towards Tarleton Lock.
    Once through Tarleton Lock we head onto the Rufford Branch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal where we moored in a lovely spot just before Fearns Swing Bridge.

    That grounding was concerning. Interesting to see the negative realities of your life. Great handling of some scary situations. I have watched several of you do the River Ribble….I do not think I could do that without being extremely stressed. I was holding my breath for the wake from that cruiser. I appreciate the adventure you narrowboaters have for wanting to experience most, if not all, of those canals.

      @@ournarrowboatquest4894 In the 1960's Preston was a busy dock and we used to love watching the ships sailing up the Ribble to the docks. We'd wave like mad as they passed us and it was great to get a blast of the ship's horn if we were lucky! Wonderful memories :-)

      Rod Nelson - Thanks Rod, we didn’t have a problem with the Rivers, it was just a bit of anxiety as we pulled out of the lock coming north as the River was flowing quite fast. I think the tip for Savick Brook would be try not to be the last boat down! Thanks for watching and commenting!👍

    I miss the Ribble Piddler. I can't remember why it was replaced? Such a shame. I noticed you moored overnight at Salwick Basin, the winding hole. I used to work at the BNFL plant alongside the canal there. Lunch hour, I'd often take a walk the towpath there. Shame about the grumpy fisherman too. When you entered the Ribble it took me back to my childhood when Mum would take us camping and fishing on the river bank. Ships used to come and go from Preston Docks and we'd always get a cheery wave from the crew. I must have a wander down there soon. It's so tranquil. Thanks for sharing. Loved every minute.

    Well done you two it must be nerve racking doing that in a narrow boat, all that siding for the tide to push against. It's my 1st visit here and will return.
    I used to own a wooden 30ft cabin cruiser and spent a lot of time in Holland, was making a journey down the coast Breskens to Oostende had to take refuge in Zeebrugge as the on shore breeze made navigation difficult. To keep course I had to tack into the wind to clear the shore and then try and gain headway. It was a great choice as we later heard that Oostende port was closed and boats had to circle for hours. While we tucked into a steak and a few beers.

    Well done on getting through that stretch. Two questions; any concerns of meeting another boat in that section (or is it controlled in some way) and could a decrease in your draft be gained by dumping from your freshwater tank? Great video and I know that boater’s angst all too well.

    • @ournarrowboatquest4894
      @ournarrowboatquest4894  5 лет назад

      George Douglas - Hi George, many thanks for watching. You wouldn’t meet another boat coming the other way as CRT have a one way system depending on the tides. You could likely decrease the draft by a small amount by dumping your fresh water tank but not significantly. We have a very shallow draft, and were under the specified draft level of 2 feet 3 inches.

      We felt very intimidated by that fisherman and he really spoilt our day. I think the reasoning behind reversing up the locks is the same as going down. There really isn’t much room to manoeuvre and it is easier to reverse in rather than try to go in forward. As for the grounding we really were concerned that we would get stuck!
