Rescue of Iris the Chimpanzee | PETA Animal Rescues

A 32-year-old chimpanzee named Iris was being held all alone in a tiny, barren, and dark cell at a roadside zoo called Chestatee Wildlife Preserve & Zoo in Georgia. Iris often smeared her own feces on the walls of the cell and spent almost all her time huddled under a dirty blanket. But in March 2015, a generous PETA member helped us free Iris from this hellhole. Following negotiations, Iris was quickly sent on her way to the beautiful Save the Chimps sanctuary in Florida!
Iris is thriving at Save the Chimps and was introduced to her next-door neighbor, Abdul, within days of arriving at the sanctuary. Soon, Iris will be introduced to more chimpanzees and have the opportunity to live on a lush green island with palm trees and a chimpanzee family. Best of all, Iris will never be alone again-all because people cared!

There is absolutely no limit to the amount of suffering that the individuals that did this to her should have to endure.....I would personally like to turn them into grease spots.

its 2018 do you have an update on Iris at all? how is she doing ? I would love to see her happy and running around there in a video it teared me up that for 32 YEARS she was all alone it broke my heart but to live the rest of her life out with her own kind is such a blessing thank you PETA !!!
People who think it is OK to keep ANY living thing in a zoo or a marine park is a disgrace to the human race. ALL living things have feelings, need love, should never be ripped from the wild away from their families. Happy for Iris but mad at people who put profit first.
Agree.. but its not just profit... during communist soviet union communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu had built tiny cages with tigers and lions and keept in abandoned zoos in Rumania

What? That hellhole was in a ZOO? In the USA? How that could be legal? I live in the shitty postcommunistic Czech Republic and these conditions would be unacceptable in the ZOO. And what about people who came to the ZOO? Did they never complaine for the whole 23 years?

A lot of the problem lies with the USDA (US Department of Agriculture). They are at the whim of powerful members of Congress, and as such they just don't do the job they are supposed to. It's a damned disgrace.
One example is Nosey the elephant. She has suffered for years at the hands of her abusive and neglectful 'owner' Hugo Liebel, who has been fined many times, but is still at it. Thankfully PETA and other organizations are working on her behalf, but there are still many circus and zoo elephants in captivity that suffer as well.

Animals are living beings just like us. They deserve the right to live with joy, love, and freedom. We humans don't have a right to take that away. Good job whoever helped PETA rescue this poor creature. You just saved a life.

I read and I watch these stories and my heart cannot take it. Please, we must close down this and all zoos. I hope that Iris has the heart to forgive all of us for her long suffering. We are the ones who deserve to be placed in cages, not this sweet and beautiful chimpanzee. I feel nothing but disdain for those responsible, and any other human being who is responsible for keeping any animal of any kind chained or caged.
keeping these animals alone seems the cruelest aspect of the whole thing. Anyone whose ever has a pet mouse knows you can't even keep them alone. They'll become depressed, lethargic, will even stop eating.

Didn't this just bring tears to my eyes - As it is, I dislike captivity for profit, but there is certainly no such thing as a good roadside zoo ... they should be banned, EVERYWHERE ! Hasn't she does so well considering the life she has had - and for her now, the remaining years will be HEAVENLY, being on lush green grass, feeling the sun - never to hunger or her limbs to be sore and she will be in the company of her own kind ! Thank you to the special person who made this rescue possible. Please everyone - keep working to make these animal prisons ILLEGAL, not even human prisoners are subjected to such a living hell on earth !

I'm not a big fan of govt but we need serious Federal laws to prevent cruelty to animals whether it's a small or big "zoo", factory farming, or people shooting small animals for fun. It's long overdue for Humanity to start growing up spiritually here on planet earth before there's nothing left for anyone.
