OK now that I have watched the full video, i needed to come back and say how much i loved it! I am going to have to seek out the NPR article because it sounds like it validates how I have been using Tarot... as did your reading. PS: I love readings that include so many Arcana cards-- so powerful. They cut through the noise and vagaries to say, "pay attention-- this is important!" Well done-- one of my fav videos in a while!

I think a good book content wise to go with the empress card would be Sourdough. It's not about a mom, but the main character is definitely burning out at the beginning of the book and not really caring for herself very well, and it's a real fun read. I love that you used tarot cards to pick your TBR, that's such an awesome and fun idea!

What a fun idea! I dabble (not so seriously) in Tarot-- not so spiritual but more as a tool for self-analysis when I need to cut through conflicts between head and heart. I use the Golden Tarot deck-- love the artwork.

I love Piranesi so much. It instantly became one of my all-time favorite books last year. I think you hit on a lot of the things that resonate with me--the fable-like quality, the incredible depth within a fairly simple, "readable" narrative, the authorial voice, the questions raised, etc. I need to re-read it and see what I will get out of it a second (third, etc.) time. I suspect it will be a slightly different book on each reading, if you know what I mean!

    • @bookslikewhoa

It's one that I think would lend itself really well to rereading, for sure

This was so much fun! At the beginning of this year I made a stack of 12 old TBR books I wanted to pick up this year, and I organized them into four groups based on the tarot suits. At the beginning of each new month I have been picking a card to help me choose from a specific suit, and it’s been super fun. I totally agree with your take on using the tarot for self-reflection. I think of the tarot as referencing certain archetypes and using it as a creative process to get my brain working through things that maybe I am tired of thinking about completely logically 😂

I do something similar with my tarot and reading! I have a google sheet with 3-4 reading prompts per card and when I can't decide what to read, I'll pull a card or two.
I also see tarot as self reflective or as something that can tell you the next step in a path.

I like tarot to work through my thoughts and think of it as making the subconscious conscious but rarely read my own these days (though this video did make me dig out my deck for a quick three card spread!). I would recommend the Taschen Tarot book if you don't already have it - it is light on the how & why, but has some interesting essays and features a huge array of decks to compare and contrast so good if you're into art (also a beautiful book on the bookshelf!).
I will definitely be giving American Heretics a go. I found it interesting that you didn't study Native American history much as it forms a key part of the US history module I taught for GCSE here in the UK and we were often told by students that it was the part of the course they found most interesting.

This has inspired me to try Tarot! I love any vessels that help me delve deeper into myself. I like what you said about being more of a philosophical Christian because I definitely feel the same way. I was raised in a Catholic family and went to church every Sunday, but as I’ve gotten older I have loved learning about other forms of spirituality even more. I really love your Vlogs (and kitties). I have not read any of the books that you chose, but I put them on my list. :-)

Cool concept! I've done similar things with tarot, all in good fun. For me I dont do reversals, I allow the placement in the spread to give the subtle meaning. Like death in the past position will mean something really different from death in the future, for example. Reverses never really gave me the same spark.

I'm glad you read Death and the Dancing Footman for me. 😉 I had it on my TBR, specifically because it sounded like Cards on the Table (my favorite Christie). Now, I'm going to skip it. Time saved-😊 Your cats 🐈 are adorable.

I don't know much about Tarot, but I do find it very interesting (and the artwork alone is wonderful). I have a similar religious background having been raised in the church, and having to reckon with that as I grew into adulthood, so that was something I very much related to. I really enjoy all your vlogs though, whatever the theme, and I was cheered just by seeing that this one had posted. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and reading experience! I added both Empress books to my tbr, and I'm more excited by Piranesi, which was already on there.

I'm a runecaster and in the Before Times I enjoyed a local tarot club that met monthly. It was interesting how the two practices informed and play off of each other. I feel the same way about tarot as what you describe, that it's a tool for introspection. For reading for others, I take the same kind of approach, just focused outward. Extraspection?

This is such a fun idea! My partner picks a tarot card every time he starts a new book, he uses it as a bookmark and also looks to that specific to card to see what he will get out the reading experience. This would be such a fun version to try! Always love your reading vlogs!

I love your commentary on spirituality. My experiences mirror yours in that I grew up evangelical, left, tried everything from being an atheist to Buddhism. I have settled in this culturally Christian spirituality that doesn't have a real impact on my everyday life at all. I have only been interested in tarot in thr since that I like all things pretty and paper. Your practical approach to it makes me want to investigate a little deeper into it.

Oh, yay! I have about 70 tarot decks. (I've been reading for over a decade and love "playing" with my cards.) Maybe I'll try this for one of my TBRs... And, yeah, PIRANESI is perfect for the Hermit. I remember starting that book and thinking, "This is nonsense," but by the end I was so glad I stuck it out. I think, to your point, that book is an interesting look at how we ascribe meaning to things, especially if and when we have so little and are isolated.

I highly recommend "Song of the Hummingbird" by Graciela Limón. Its set after the Spanish conquest of Mexico. A Priest is trying to offer an Aztec woman absolution but instead she forces him to see the conquest through the eyes of the conquered. A short but a good read.

‘Boudoir’ in quotes is definitely not a thing in my edition of Death and the Dancing Footman! 😂 It’s also one of my favourite GAD mysteries. It got a high 4 stars after my first read and has been a shiny 5 stars with every re-read! But I’m also a sucker for Rory and Troy and Marsh’s writing! But on the other hand Cards on the Table only got a 2 from me because I thought it was so utterly boring and I hated the structure! 🙈

Then I read a book called 'Journey of Souls' by Michael Newton and things kind of clicked for me...it changed my spirituality, but also made it so much stronger. I can't guarantee that everyonewho reads the book will have the same experience, but I thought I would mention it here , because what he proposed just resonated and made so much sense to me, and maybe it does the same for someone else. 💕

Here's some books that may have fit thematically witty the reverse empress:
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
    Little Darlings by Melanie Golding
    Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
We Are Okay by Nina LaCour
All have themes of what happens when women don't take proper time to care for themselves
