Electric fencing can be simple and extremely effective. Just the addition of an electric pulse can do wonders for containing livestock or deterring wildlife. Electric fence maintenance can also be simple with some general knowledge and the right tools for the job.
In this video, we take a close look at what is arguably the most helpful tool for electric fencing, the fence tester! Fence testers read the voltage on your fence, giving you a clear picture of how effective it is at a given moment. Many fence testers even have built-in fault finders that allow you to track down any “faults” that are causing grounding issues.
Like anything else, different models of fence tester provide different features. For example, some are simple and economical, others have digital displays, some feature fault finder indicators, while others offer remote control capabilities for turning the energizer off and on.

Remember, when testing an electric fence, you want high voltage (indicating shock strength) and low amps (indicating no faults or grounding issues). If you see low voltage or a spike in amps, a fence tester is your best friend. It will allow you to diagnose, find, and fix your electric fence. You don’t need a degree in electrical engineering to understand your electric fence or to keep it “hot,” all you need is the right fence tester!
