I have Uruguayan amethyst and it's beautiful. Uruguayan amethyst is not treated, unlike the African or Brazilian varieties. The best quality amethyst was found in Siberia, Russia.
Russian is hands down the best... bolivian and some from the southeastern US are a very close second place.

Amethyst is quartz and the colour is determined by the amount of iron in it. The highest quality amethyst is found in Northwestern Ontario Canada.

I'm based in Toronto and have visited the Northern Ontario amethyst mines, I definitely would not call it the best amethyst in the world. Because of amethyst's relatively low value and the high labor costs in Ontario, there isn't large scale commercial production.
The top producers are Uruguay and Brazil.

this film claims that amethyst from Uruguay is the best. That is just an opinion not a fact. Idonot know much about gem-stones or minerals but i have various pieces of amethyst ,one of which is from N.Nigeria and the depth of colour in the stones (which are still encased in the rock) knocks spots of the stuff in the vid. does anybody know if Nigerian amethyst is anything special and if it is worth loads of money

gisaclu It likely does. But be aware that although amethyst was extremely pricey in antiquity and is absolutely gorgeous (and likely the most beautiful purple/violet stone hands down), these days the price of amethyst ranges from $20-$40 per carat, not pricey at all by today's standard...
...but that's what's so great about amethyst!
Uruguayan amethyst are the darkest. You can find dark color more easily than anyother country and aren't treated like many african amethysts. Also, the 2 biggest geodes in the world are Uruguayans... But, the chrystals are mostly in small sizes.

one of them is fake. The Big one at 7:15. Too Blue. It isn't supposed to look blue. Real amethyst doesn't look blue to the human nor to the camera eye.
Amethyst can come in blue naturally…
