    interesting fact: Ultramarine was the most desired shade of blue during the middle ages and only a few painters were rich enough to purchase it. It is said that Michelangelo didn't finish 'the entombment' because he didn't have money to purchase ultramarine. It was so valuable because it was made from the powder of lapis lazuli coming from Afganisthan mines and other elements, the color that means 'beyond marine' is a intense deep blue that was immortalized on Veemer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' and was ultimately reserved to be used in Virgin Mary, Jesus and other sacred paintings.

      ....Indeed!...Not only was that Stone as valuable as gold,but did you know that Lapis Lazuli at one time was so highly prized and treasured by the Ancient Egyptians so much that they made it a capital punishment for any Man who was not Royalty to be caught with this precious stone in his POSSESSION??? It would result in his inevitable arrest and he would summarily be put to Death!....That's all...Shalom.😉

    Use of Lapis lazuli predates Egypt. It was used by the Sumerian (Akkad) by the Annunaki and Mesopotamia cultures and by Babylon. All three above cultures are known as the Biblical land of Shinar. And that Lapis being displayed here is top gem quality. Gorgeous gems.

    I bought a small piece of geometric shaped lapis from an afghan refugee about 12 yrs ago. Someone who dealt lapis said ''where did you get this?'' -and when I told him, he said ''ah, these very rich intense blue bits are kept by the Afghans, you just don't get colours like this on the general market. It has tiny flecks here and there of pyrite, but you need to look hard to see them.

    Lapis lazuli used by aciant Aratta civilization which became famous in Sumerian civilization Way before Egyptians who started using Lapis lazuli and turquoise stones from ancient civilizations in West Asia.
    Also Lapis lazuli in those times only was found in Afghanistan region which always been part of West Asian civilizations.

      ....This is so true!...Not only was this Stone of Destiny made into the Most High's Royal throne,but it was also used as tablets by the Most High to carve His Ten Commandments into. Lapis Lazuli is therefore,the Stone of Contemplation!☺️

    Lapis is very iffy in quality these days. It;s very hard to find the old pure blues, dark or light. Most of the stuff available no looks like lapis/calcite sandwiches. I got some Madan Char from a guy a while back; it's nearly all Lazurite crystals with pyrite. India seems to be making it's stones today. They're doing something to the lapis ( and also sugilite) they sell, like grinding it all up and pouring it into molds. Of course, I've been cutting for years and can tell what's what by now. caveat emptor

    • @petepenn1
      @petepenn1 8 лет назад +1

      +Laurie Stetzler So right the quality is crappy that he has, been collecting in Kabul since 73 and Dark pure blue is getting very hard to get. No pyrite please.

    • @f4ngdragon183
      @f4ngdragon183 8 лет назад

      +petepenn1 I prefer my lapis with some impurities and some blue, I currently have a light blue one with some impurities but the thing is amost all blue. Never seen a lapis this dark before, either, makes me hard to compare it with Sodalite.

    • @dragonfox2.058
      @dragonfox2.058 8 лет назад

      +Horacio Avilés
      I also prefer some pyrites as it makes Lapis look like a night sky to me!
      So sad to see so many fabulous rocks/gems that are just gone or gone through the roof in price since the turn of the century. A lot of the rough is so cracked I won't even bother to cut it. Who wants a cracked stone?
      People either forget about them or think they can still get matching sets and certainly won't or can't pay for them ( probably the latter these days)

    It was once so expensive that painters would charge extra prices for every inch painted with Ultramarine, made with ground lapis lazuli back then. It was usually reserved for sacred art, since only the Church would be able to afford it. Only the most important artwork, like Madonna's mantle.
