Pilita Corrales is well-loved by Filipinos (locally and internationally) and still very popular on TV guestings and concerts. Still beautiful as ever...she's aging (at 81 y.o.) gracefully! My older sister (married to a Spanish) watched a small private concert two yrs ago w/ Pilita Corrales performer.
There was no other Filipina, then and now, who made it big outside the Philippines, as a recording star. So it's wrong to say 'she's one of the very first Filipinas...'. Pilita became a hugely popular singer/performer in Australia for 4 years between 1959-1963, so popular that a street in Melbourne, Australia was named Pilita St. in her honor. Her mother language is Cebuano/Bisaya but she's fluent in both English and Spanish due to her Spanish ancestry. She's not fluent in Tagalog just like most other true-blue Cebuano celebrities. Pilita made history in Australia for being the first woman, Aussie or foreigner, to chart a song with her largely English repertoire in Australian pop charts. Though, another Cebuana singer/performer, Amapola Cabase, became popular outside the Philippines with her own US television magazine show between late 1970s well to the 80s. Leah Salonga was globally popular outside the Philippines but as a theater actress.
She is a famous mestiza singer actress that go way way back many moons ago. A lot of our elderly are fluent in spanish especially those who were school-educated since spanish was part of their curriculum back in the day. Pilar Garrido Corrales (Pilita Corales) was born on August 22, 1939, at Lahug, Cebu City, to José Corrales and María Garrido. She left her legacy by becoming the first woman to make the Australian pop charts with a local recording called 'Come Closer to Me'. She became a star of the Victoria Television circuit and her first hit, Come Closer to Me, became part of a collection on which she is billed as one of the Grand Dames of Victorian Radio and Television.

She was one of the judges with Charice, Martin Nievera, and Gary Valeniano when KZ Tandingan won the X Factor PH. Corrales became the first Filipino to sing in Caesars Palace. In her concert in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas during the late 70s, Corrales sang Spanish, English, Cebuano and Tagalog songs,
back until the mid 80s Spanish was still taught as an elective in selected private high school, so the few remaining meztizo families with strong roots still with Spain were still able to converse with their children in Spanish at home. Pilita belongs to one of those families who usually lived outside Manila in the provincial cities like Cebu and Bacolod. and BTW. Spanish still considered an official language here until 1987. Spanish was spoken predominantly (so once upon a time we WERE Latinos) deep into American colonization until the 40s when school instruction began to be taught in English and Spanish speaking numbers declined. When independence was granted, English was already the language of business and government and education. Filipino novelty songs back in the day were usually to the melody that has Latin flavor in it, and old "country" or provincial music had Hispanic flavor mixed in it. We're your long lost cousins. 😁
We were hispanic and we ARE generally hispanic because we have Spanish culture and language influence to a great extent and some have Spanish roots. But just like Spanish Saharans and Equatoguineans we are NOT Latinos and you will understand that when you look into the definition and origin of the word Latino itself. We do sometimes get confused of the terms Hispanic and Latino so please do look it up! ^^
But generally, your words were on point. My father still experienced Spanish in Highschool and my grandfather spoke to an extent and when he plays his Gitara and sings in Spanish, it was so in him I thought as a child, our language is the same as Spanish.

Grandma Pilita Corrales is now 81 years old. This concert was more than 10 years ago. She is dubbed as "Asia's Queen of Songs". Her children are also well-known celebrities in the Philippine film industry. Corrales became the first Filipino to sing in Caesars Palace.
Pilita Corrales is 81 years old now and as far as I know, she's still active in the music and movie industries. I think she was already in her early 70s when she performed this song in Toronto. I am a Filipino musician who hails from the same region as Pilita. I still love to play this song with my guitar along with other Spanish songs like No Puedo Olvidar and Guantanamera.

I was floored when I met you personally in 1995. You are divine.
Pilita Corrales' mother was an immigrant from Granada, Spain, while her father was Filipino Spanish. Her paternal grandfather migrated to the Philippines from Zamora Spain. Her paternal great grandmother was a daughter of a Spanish military officer and a Uruguayan. Her Filipino blood comes from her paternal grandmother. Her first language is Spanish, second languages are Cebuano and English, Tagalog is her 4th language when she decided to pursue a singing career in the Philippines but her musical career started in Australia where she became the first female artist to top the Australian chart. Her first husband was Spanish which produced a daughter (also an actress in the Philippines), she bore a son (also an actor) from a Filipino-Spanish actor, and her second husband is a Paraguayan-Spanish. Before K-pop, it was Pilita Corrales that invaded Asia. All the rest is in Wiki. She is a F"#€%n legend!!! :D

Pilita Corrales is a Filipino with Spanish ancestry. Colloquially, we call her Spanish mestiza or mestiza since she is part Spanish. She studied in Spain and her first husband happens to be pure Spanish which is why she can speak Spanish fluently.
She is one of Philippines legendary singer and actress. She is what we Filipinos call a "Filipina Spanish Mestiza". When she is performing on stage as an actress she can't help adding some adlib in her script speaking in Spanish language.
I always enjoy watching your awesome reactions to our Filipino singers. Huge thank you for deep appreciation of our talents in singing. I pray more Filipinos will subscribe to your channel.
Pilita Street Where: Victoria, Australia. Named after: Pilita Corrales, singer. It was in Australia that Pilita Corrales began her singing career. In 1959, she set sail for Australia with actor-magician John Calvert for some engagements. En route, they were shipwrecked off Australia’s northern coast and rescued by the Navy. The duo went on to perform in Sydney, Darwin, and Melbourne. Pilita was an instant hit and was featured on popular TV shows, thrilling audiences with her English, Spanish, and Filipino songs. She was signed up by Astor Records and became the first female recording star in Australia to score a hit on the pop charts with the song ‘Come Closer To Me’-long before Olivia Newton-John and Kylie Minogue. Considered as one of the ‘Great Dames of Victorian Radio and Television,’ Pilita was honored by having a street named after her in the ’70s in the Forest Hill district of Victoria. In 1963, she returned to the Philippines to establish her career in her own country. Pilita continues to perform regularly in Australia today, most recently in 2015, where Australians still recognize her as the star of their generation. [Source: FilipiKnow]

"Historia de un Amor" is a famous and well-loved song in the Philippines. I think it was used as an OST in a Mexican movie in the 50's or 60's. But even 'til the 90s, the song was still being played in some local radio stations and was still being sung and perfomed by rondalla bands in restaurants in Manila.
Señora Pilíta was an insularés, her parents, we're peninsulares, were born and raised in Valencia, Spain and their family was settled in the province of Cebu. In her early age, she's not just a singer but an expert in Flamenco, Salsa and Tango. She's the music icon of the Philippines during late 40's up to early 60's. She's the bridge of Philippines to the latin world, sponsoring cultural dialogue with Latin American countries even Spain.
Around late 1950's Spanish was taught to many schools. Even my father can also speak and understand Spanish. He said that it was mandatory back then. My father is already 67 years old btw. 🥰

here’s a nice trivia for you efra regarding your favorite live performer…. you have now reacted to all the judges who discovered KZ Tandingan: Gary, Martin, Charise (back then), and finally Pilita. nobody honestly thought you guys will be able to complete the four but very happy that you did.
Gosh, Efra, you've researched about 3 generations--different eras of musical artists of the Philippines! Who knows, soon you'll discover more of our great national artists (composers) of 1900's who composed 'kundimans' (Philippine Tagalog timeless songs sung to us by our grandmother when we were smal.l Way to go!👏🎶🇵🇭🎼
Pilita, together with Bert “Tawa” Marcelo, was a host of the original “Tawag ng Tanghalan” singing contest when Regine Velasques won and started to become famous in the show.
I sooo love, love this song. I used to hear that piece sang by my aunts, uncles, grandmas and old folks when i was still a toddler. Indeed, so nostalgic. 😢❤️💗
Given the history of the Philippines, Filipinos have mixes as well Filipino-Chinese, Filipino-Hispanic, Filipino-American, etc. And each cultural mix is very much alive and continue to thrive in all aspects. If you truly wish to delve into it, Pilita was among the very first true Divas. Look at the history of our beauty queens through the years, many are from long standing “old families”. For some, Spanish is their first language followed by their dialect then Tagalog and finally English. The same goes for those with Chinese roots….
about Fil-XXX mixes… you have not mentioned those who Kpop, kdrama and kmovies and alsoJapanese anime na feel na feel nila ang immersion into those cultures. 😀
not all Filipino poulations are mixes of blood (with mestizo features ) its only about 3% nawawala na nga pagkain ng mga siglo...hindi gaya2 sa Mexico na 40% (pure Spanish )50%(meztisos)20%(Indian natives ). sa northen Thailand halos mestizo Instik sila kaya kitang kta sa mga artistas nila at kabilang sila sa lahing indio China...tayong pilipinos ay lahing indo mayala or austronesians.

She's 82 now and this was maybe just a few years back so it is amazing for her to maintain her voice (and figure!) Pilita was born in Cebu and has Spanish blood. Fun fact: she has a collection of wigs for performing. I've yet to see a photo of her with her natural hair.

Just like Pilita, there is a very small portion of the Philippine population that is composed of Insulares (Spanish purebloods who migrated to the islands), Peninsulares (Spanish purebloods who were born and raised in the islands), and mestizos. Most of them still speak fluent Spanish, as well as English, Tagalog and other dialects.
please allow me to correct you Mr. Jeff Versoza, insular roughly means island and Spanish Insulares refers to those Spanish who were born and raised here in our islands. Peninsulares on the other hand roughly means peninsula, and Spanish Peninsulares refer to Spanish who were born in the Iberian Peninsula where Spain and Portugal located
You guys have seen her her before and did not even notice it. Looking back at your Nov. 25 2020 reaction to KZ's X factor audition, Efra asked who the judges were as he addressed her as the elderly lady. Later on you discovered Gary then Martin, you both are familiar with Charice and last but not least Pilita. It's official, you both have covered doing reactions on all the people involved in that fateful day when KZ came to our hearts.

It’s just a generational thing. She came from a generation where more people, mestizos especially, spoke Spanish in the Philippines. Her grandchildren don’t speak Spanish anymore.
Yes...during my late grandmother (born in 1900s) spoke fluent Spanish as she grew up with Spanish way of living. I believe she had Spanish blood from her ancestors. The Philippines wash colonized for 300 years and Spanish was the spoken language aside from Tagalog and English. In the 1950s-1970s, Spanish language was a major college subject. Our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal (a multi-linqual) wrote "Noli Me Tangere" and " El Filibusterismo" in Spanish and widely studied and taken as our regular subject in Philippine History course. That's why many Filipinos are familiar with Spanish language, having a big influence in our history.

During her days (Pilita Corales) was the Asia’s queen of Song, she’s also popular in USA back a days. She actually speaks Spanish fluently, most of Filipino elites in the Philippines speaks espanol language.
Back then, not so much now. 😔

Pilita Corales, the smooth, soul piercing singer whom I grew.up listening to her when I feel so alone and it would bring back memories with my Mother and Sister Carmen who loved to hear her music n singing Style. Her Carinosa, her Dalagang Pilipina, her A Million Thanks ToYou were the Daily music we would hear in the house . Its a remarkable performance that characterizes her a well deserved DIVA.Perfectionist singer belting with ease as if she cradles me in a hammock with inspiration n peace. Pure magic Ms Pilita. I loved your music since I was seventeen years old until now im 66, your music resonates in my very heart n soul. May God bless you more with long Life. I was floored when I met you personally in 1995. You are divine.
As a kid I always remember Pilita as my parents favorite singer because of her awesome personality. The Asia's Queen Of Songs.
She is the Last her kind. We just need to enjoy it that we can still hear her sing in her own way.
My Dad was her band leader on several occasions....she's such a timeless talent!!
Jaya mentioned her to you guys during your podcast with her. Pilita is a good friend of Jaya's mom and helped her start her career here in the Philippines. Jaya calls her "mamita"

My mom is now 63years old and she said that back in her day, school in the Philippines has Spanish Subject/Class. So, my mom’s generation learn how to speak Spanish. I even remember my mom talking in Spanish when I was a kid which now remembering it how I wish we have Spanish Class when I started schooling. Because now I live in the place where half of the population are talking in Spanish. If we have back in my days then it should be as easy as pie to talk in Spanish today.
Great reaction you too. What a genuine reaction!💕
She is Filipina-Spanish, a very well known singer and actress in the Philippines. Fluently speaks English and Spanish language andTagalog and Visayan dialects.
Yooowww bisaya isn't a dialect it is actually a language
Tagalog and Visayan languages! Not dialects.
In honor of her, there is a street in Australia named after her. She performed in Las Vegas with famous artist like Sammy Davis jr, Julio Iglesias, Johnny Mathis to name a few. She is a Spanish-Filipina
Bisaya is a language while Cebuano is a dialect. Pelita speaks the Cebuano dialect.
Pilita Street
Where: Victoria, Australia.

Wowow! I miss Pilita . I grew up watching her back in the 80's. Love it that you made this.
she is a Cebuana. you should checkout her entry in Wikipedia. she is also "the first female artist to top the Australian pop music chart."
A street is named after her in Autralia because of that
Loved this guys! Makes me think of my childhood too. This song reminds me of my parents, my grandparents. I live in Atlanta Georgia USA but was born in the Southwestern United States, Colorado, and grew up in New Mexico where there is a large Hispanic demographic. Mi Gente. 💖Yes we all originate from our home country, Spain and have this music and culture in common. 😊 Love you guys. 👍
Please invite Ms. Pelita corrales on your feature Friday segment. To know her more

And maybe you can all speak in Spanish! That would be the bomb!
Around late 1950's Spanish was taught to many schools. Even my father can also speak and understand Spanish. He said that it was mandatory back then. My father is already 67 years old btw. 🥰
Pilita is one of the greatest performers of her time. She owns the stage every single performance. She speaks English, Spanish, Tagalog, and Visaya fluently.
She is the one I considered as the amazing in the world of music, when I first saw her concert I totally amazed how she was performed.
Pilar Garrido Corrales was born at Lahug, Cebu City, to José Corrales and María Garrido.
Her father is Spanish.
After finishing her studies at Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepción in Cebu, she went to finishing school in Spain at the Colegio Mayor de Padre Poveda. In 1957, Corrales began her recording career after arriving in Australia for a brief period.
Lifted this out from google. But I grew up with her songs because my mum’s a fan of hers. 😍
my mother was also a big fan of Ms. Pilita.

here’s a nice trivia for you efra regarding your favorite live performer…. you have now reacted to all the judges who discovered KZ Tandingan: Gary, Martin, Charise (back then), and finally Pilita.
nobody honestly thought you guys will be able to complete the four but very happy that you did.
She is a singer in the 70`s & she is one of the best singer in 70`s & 80`s
She still performing.. great Philippines Icon! Mucho gracias!
Well put!
not all Filipino poulations are mixes of blood (with mestizo features ) its only about 3% nawawala na nga pagkain ng mga siglo...hindi gaya2 sa Mexico na 40% (pure Spanish )50%(meztisos)20%(Indian natives ). sa northen Thailand halos mestizo Instik sila kaya kitang kta sa mga artistas nila at kabilang sila sa lahing indio China...tayong pilipinos ay lahing indo mayala or austronesians.

She's been in the industry since the late 60s, imagine that guys
Correction please. SHE'S been in the industry in the late 50s ans not 60s.
FUN FACT : Pilita helped in discovering the now popular, KZ Tandingan as one of the OG Judges of the Philippine franchise of the 1st x factor, together with fellow judges--Martin, Gary and Charice. 😊✌️

Back in 2019 I had the chance to work with her for an out-of-town event, she's very cordial, down-to-earth, and generous.
She's 82 now and this was maybe just a few years back so it is amazing for her to maintain her voice (and figure!)
Pilita was born in Cebu and has Spanish blood. Fun fact: she has a collection of wigs for performing. I've yet to see a photo of her with her natural hair.
I remember in an interview she said her first language is Spanish, and she cannot speak Tagalog before.
Yes her mother tongue is Spanish.
Purong Spanish ang lahi nya..Si Gloria Arroyo nga fluent pa rin mag Spanish dahil Spanish ang salita ng Tatay nya..
@@jonilioazuela8400 ahh. I thought Filipino yung tatay nya. Or maybe Spanish immigrants yung grandparents nya, so her father was pure Spanish blood but was born and raised in Ph and had Filipino citizenship.

You are correct. She speaks Cebuano but very little Tagalog and when she does, she has a very prominent “bisaya” accent.
She's from cebu city guys, she was our very popular pop singer. When I was in my college I have Spanish language from Spanish 1 to Spanish 4 N and fortunately finished it.
Reportedly, she's the only filipina to open a concert for the beatles
She was our favorite singer in 196os when I was in high school. I can still sing this song when I wish in our gatherings this day and I'm 73.
I remember peeking one ballet dancing practice on my home province where there are 2 pure blooded Spanish. So beautiful they are.

Our national hero Jose Rizal wrote his novels Noli Me Tangere, El Filibustirismo, because Spanish was our official language in the Phillipines.
Efra, you might be interested to read those books written by Jose Rizal. Those are gems :)
Did you mean Rizal will not write the novel if Spanish was not a language in the Philippines at that time?
@@JC-bq1us No, he was talking about how the name of the books were "spanish"
@@JC-bq1us What kind of logic is that lmao
@@JC-bq1us Rizal would very much have written his novels in Tagalog or any of the 22 languages he knew, read, wrote and spoke.
The novels were written in Spanish not just because it was the official language in the Philippines at the time, but because he intended to.
until the 80's spanish is still the second language in the legal papers of the philippines. and it is still teach in college. you had to earn 12 units of college points to graduate in college.
The Philippines was a Spanish colony for a long time. Spanish was even part of our curriculum in college in the past.So many Filipinos spoke or at least understood Spanish.
She is from Cebu, the same place Morissette comes from. She is of Spanish descent and speaks fluently Spanish, Visayan dialect, Tagalog, and English. After graduating from Colegio dela Inmculada Concepcion and Colegio Mayor de Padre Poveda. She has an Album all in Visayan and dialect, an album in Spanish, Tagalog & English. She is the real deal. She started it all for singers as she was the first one who made it internationally in the early 60s. She made it big in Australia before coming back to the Philippines.
Because in the earliest times, Spanish is taught in school. Cebu was the first region colonized by Spaniards. She is Cebuano. Our grandparents know how to speak Spanish.
My grandmother is now 67 years old . She told me that back in there highschool days they have a Spanish subject💕☺️
It’s just a generational thing. She came from a generation where more people, mestizos especially, spoke Spanish in the Philippines. Her grandchildren don’t speak Spanish anymore.
Spanish class was mandatory like English before too. Even my dad wqs good at Spanish
I can't believe you found Pilita Corrales! My parents had her records! She sings in Spanish and numerous Philippine dialects and I heard she now lives in South America, maybe Argentina? She has a gorgeous voice and there's always something about her that sounds like home, wherever that might be. This is taking *me* back!
It is quite common for Filipinos with Spanish decent to have grandparents that spoke and looked like Pilita Corales.
Pilita Corrales is a Filipina born and raised in the Philippines. She has a strong spanish blood that's why she looks like from south america. She is now about 78 years old but she still performs. There is a lot of great Filipino singers and she is definitely one of the best.
She was still singing before the pandemic. She is the most popular singer of her generation. She is still well known until now by every generation . She is a great singer with a powerful character, very regal , so present when she is on stage. And even off stage. Reason why she is still so known even by the youth.
Pilita is a musical legend in the Philippines. I remember when I was a little boy she was already performing. She’s more than 80 years old but still performing. Music is absolutely in her.
