- Struggling with an unruly vocal? Can't get that bass to sit deep and tight? Gregory Scott, Kush Audio's plugin and gear designer, has a trick for taking that problem out of your way so you can get your focus back and return to mixing your song!
Check out www.thehouseofkush.com and add a splash of something unique to your productions now, because the world has enough boring mixes!
It's like an older Owen Wilson telling me my mix is going to be okay and everything's gonna be fine
Dude! I've been on the verge of making an Owen Wilson comment on this channel for ages lol!
Haha like Owen Wilson can be more old
Especially after Ableton Live just crashing on you hahah. Soothing advice for the musicians' soul.
I too have struggled with making an Owen Wilson joke for a long time. Thank you for doing this. It needed to be done.
Older though? not so sure. He’s got the spirit of Wilson’s big brother though
Muting all the tracks has always been a great way for me to get a really clean sound!
Still gottta autotune the mix bus tho...
Lol

"Don't worry about a thing, cause every little thing is gonna be alright!"
Exactly!!!!
This feels like a life advice as well.
Thank you. Didn't think about it that way. But i really should try it. I have some big struggles that impact the rest of my life (mix) and i should just get on with the other things and ignore the struggle for a while.
I didn't realize there was a mute button for life's struggles...... where can I get one? LOL😁
Hakuna Matata your mix!
@Gerhard Schöner From what I understand, he's not talking about important things in that way, rather things that we obsess over and give too much importance. That happens quiet often when we're laser focusing on specific elements.
@Gerhard Schöner Interesting thoughts. I see what may, perhaps, be a cognitive error? I see in your words the assumption that "the things you struggle with" and "important aspects of your life" are identical. Sometimes things impact my life for no other reason that that I keep engaging the struggle with them, and sometimes it really is as simple as letting go and giving over to whatever happens.
Also, my career started at age 38 and my first son was born when I was 49. Youth sucked for me, everything is better because I'm older. As always, YMMV :-)
I play this on TV, wife hears it, she’s back in lingerie. Thanks!
Oops that's not your wife... that's the pizza delivery person! 😃

I am my biggest problem so I have eliminated myself from all my mixes. Do you have a tip for a new hobby?

@George Truman 👍
George Truman wrong
So wrong its right!
I would love to see the entire process of you mixing a song from beginning to end!
I'm not sure you would, it's often a total shitshow of random trial and error, chaos and dead ends. And pain, so much psychological pain! :-P
But I do have plans for some longform eps where we dive deeeep into the composition, arrangement, mixing, and production of a song. Deconstruct every aspect of it all, explain why the choices were made and why I think they work. I think that'll be WAY more educational and inspirational, and also universal because my actual workflow won't help anyone else, it's too specific. But my mindset and the pathways to my results, those are where the gold is. That's my theory at least!
Thanks for replying! That’s super exciting can’t wait to see it. It’s really good to hear I’m not the only one suffering from psychological pain 😭🙂
@@TheHouseofKushTV Sadly (or ironically), pain is the best teacher.
Yeah, that's the conventional wisdom, and pain is absolutely a great teacher... but so is joy/pleasure. We got that reward center in the brain, hardwired to the all-powerful limbic system... no matter how evolved we get, all shall kneel before the mighty rat brain! :-P
@@TheHouseofKushTV Did you ever get around to making these? I'd love to learn from them
Gregory Scott you're my spirit animal.
I don't know if these are just teasers for now but you do know people would pay for a full-blown course from you don't you. I think most would agree with me on this. I hope its on the cards.
Ssshhhh
His teaching style is like his mixing: small but effective moves
Shhhh stop putting ideas of payments into the picture. Just accept the sage of wisdom in this dismal age. Get over the captalism and enjoy life's gifts.
@@antonisatwork pssst, i know but i cant take all the teasing. I need it all and need it now.
Hmm, 'teasing' implies there's more and it's being held back in a calculated fashion. Neither of those things is true :-) I mean, there's plenty more to for me to share, but it has to be absorbed and digested at a human pace, you absolutely cannot cheat time on this endeavor. Part of me actually thinks I'm moving too fast, this shit takes practice!
I was literally struggling with placing vocals in a mix last night. I decided to mute them and leave them until the end and it all came together so easily after that. Now tonight I watched this video and know I'm not alone.
Please don't stop this series!
"there's bass there, it exists, and then I move on with my life and I don't come back to the bass." well said.
I like the way he has mixed the lamp perfectly into the background. Its there not to bright.. sits in the ambiant glow of the room..
There's a song by Mother Hips called Been Lost Once that has the most killer baseline. It's the centerpiece of the song and it sits way back in the mix. Always wanted more of it and came to realize that's part of why it works so well.
I check every video twice
First time i listen to it and drift away
Second time i turn the volume all the way down and turn the captions on so I can take in all the knowledge
The biggest help for me getting rid of that block, was your video on mixing one sound while listening to another. That changed my whole perspective on mixing.
A genius. Cutted low end during production using small speakers, and not caring about it. Low end got istantly better. I was screwing low end every time i was touching it. I just had to leave it alone...
that's a good one. makes perfect sense to just shut the problem out for a little while. thanks!
I'm surprised this never occurred to me, Ty for vocalizing this
Man I love your take on this.
THAT’S THE PROBLEM. It becomes this OBSESSION that eats away at us if we can’t FIX IT NOW!!!! AAAHHHHHHH!
So true... A GREAT SONG is the GIFT, not the WRAPPING PAPER around it. That just came fresh. 😉. We all need this reminder
You straightened your hair for this one! Looking good! Getting bogged down on one element can be like working in reverse sometimes.
You learn in 3 Mins on this channel, what you learn in an hour on others. Exactly what I was struggling with today, thank you Mr Kush!
What a great piece of advice!!! 😃😃
I could happily unsubscribe from all the other audio production channels and just hang on to this one.
The content is brilliant, the delivery is gold.
It is like therapy sessions.. great advice man, thanks
This guy has nugs o wisdom. Love the quick hits he shares.
Simple but great advice Gregory. Cheers.
Thanks 👍
I really really hope this channel grows big time, you deserve it!
I’m new to your channel and I have to say... only 2 videos in and I’m here to stay. You’re like the Owen Wilson of music production! Dig the chill vibe. Thank you.
Every week solid gold advice - I have been mixing since 1989 - and I learned my trade the hard way - hours and hours, days and days of trial and error mixing. All of these pointers are from experienced knowledge and I am guessing you have done the same - learned your craft from your own mistakes - by sharing these tips you are freeing a lot of young mixers from that pain of thinking that its only them that is having these problems with mixes - damn I wish RUclips had been around when I was a kid!
Have a great day buddy!
Indeed, that's pretty much exactly how it went down over here as well... failure after frustrating failure, clawing my way towards something remotely coherent :-)
This channel is making my production translate, finally, drummer to drummer, thank you : )
Im glad I found your channel. Feels like you create a space to get creativity back into making music, and that feels so good!
Thanks for 'getting it' :-)
I love the fact that these videos are concise.
NGL the fact that you don't plug your products every time makes me want to buy your shit even more! Seriously though man, your videos are just insane, the best content on RUclips
Thanks! I try to keep the pimpery to tasteful levels, don't wanna crash the party but also the DJ needs to get paid, it's a balancing act! 😁
Ha ha. What an absolutely brilliant strategy for dealing with all the little negative obsessions we have. If you hate something, set it free. If you bring it back and and start to...like it...all is right with the world again!
This guy could really talk me in to anything and I would cry in my cell "I didn't want to kill those people, but it was like I didn't have a choice!"
So much wisdom in just 3 minutes! Amazing!
Is like owen wilson is giving you life audio lessons for free, thank you so much mr kush
Our Pastor has returned with more wisdom! Thanks Pastor Gregory
I'm currently sorting through ideas for my next record. Once the project starts in earnest, I am going to make a playlist of all your videos and watch them once a week when the sessions begin.
Hey, just to let you know, I'm finding your videos so helpful, nice one! Thank you.
Hey G, this is getting weird now, you talk about things I’ve just started doing, or been thinking about doing on the next mix. I’ll throw the bass way down, more out of a frustration and because of a time constraint as much as anything and this really, really works. For all the reasons you say. For me I think because I recognise that I can become overwhelmed very easily especially if its say the bass and then some other things, that really starts me off on a self-critical trip that never helps. No point in wasting valuable energy that is still valid for 90% of the rest of the mix. And of course...when you bring the bass up towards the end of the mix - all your Christmasses come at once. Powerful advice!
The ole Kush Push!
i really needed this calm reminder today big time! thank you
I'm propa having dramas with both vocal and bass right now, hit the nail on the head there Kush. Another good video
This was huge to hear your message, Gregory! Thanks, man!
You have a way of making a lot of sense in a short amount of time. Thank you!
Another short but sweet instructional tip video
always good advice to be found in the kushhouse ...and those plugins...oooh..good stuff
thank you for sharing your experience, very inspiring watching this channel
Thanks for these tutorials. You teaching contributed to sign three tracks contracts with a record label. You just create a great sense of understanding
Your videos are packed with practical approaches for creative minds!!
BRAVO!! :)
I leave the vocals on mute, until i got the instruments in the pocket. With all instruments in place, vocals become really easy to mix (well, to me at least). Thx!
This is, more often than not, the way I end up coming at it as well 😊
I leave them on mute, until I'm finished mixing everything else. Then I decide that I don't really need vocals, so I leave them on mute forever.
Awesome! Been doing it that way for years, great to hear someone else actually say it. :)
These tips are great. I look forward to them.....
Some of them also make great greeting card quotes,
I'was mixing a song of my own last night and of course, like always, find myself looking up stuff on-line to get tips for making my mix better.
I think I'm better at writing music.than mixing but I really want to get better. Plus, I don't really have a choice. lol
Anyway, I was looking up info on mixing vocals and found this dude.
Now I can't stop watching these videos.
I love the philosophical approach.
Thanks for doing what you do man!!!
Boom life advice: Sometimes the things in life surrounding the problem contributes to the severity of that problem. If soloing that element head-on is not working for you, try mixing everything else. lol.
i found the original channel on english just to say! man thank you! so! so right thoughts! after my first tries was working on sound, balance and own design for a year! and i listen to translations of your videos to check your thoughts! when i upload first good track to spotify, i ll send a link in comment here! i think 1-2 days. LOVE YOUR VIDEO ABOUT COMPRESSOR TRANSIENTS! best, best explaination, bravo!
The Zen of mixing. Yeah Baby, it works!
What a hypnotic speech you have....
"...you get an identity to the mix..." hmm, i like that 🤘
Right? Another way to look at it --- and I got this from Michael Brauer --- is to think of the mix as a coherent 'space' that I'm trying to a) construct, and b) enter. Sarah, my lovely lady and musical partner, knows that when I shout "I'm in!!" the day is gonna get better for everyone... but until she hears that, she also knows I'm gonna be grumpy AF because few things in life crash my mood like a mix that hasn't yet begun to pop. 😠
The whispering gentleman with what looks like a Prophet 5 in the background has a point. Once more.
It's a Prophet 6, but who's counting? :-P
@@TheHouseofKushTV I stand corrected. Listening to demo by Dave Smith right now. Great synth!
It's my workhorse, it's insanely versatile and has that quality I treasure where, if you set the filters right, the sounds just "sit" in the mix with little to no processing. Magic!
I always like the way you share your knowledge, very concise, brief and not boring ... triggers my creativity more
Love this advice Greg! This is without doubt my favorite RUclips channel, I love the way that you break everything down, all these things I struggle with when mixing you make it just make sense, I'm so glad I stumbled the across your videos 🙏
Those are my two struggles too!
So on time. So on point. Thank you.
Damn, that intro instrumental is just pure sweetness
Please Tell me that there is a full version of it somewhere
Sadly no, I wrote it as a theme song and that's all there is. But you can check out the songs I bit when writing it, Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More" & "Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up" :-)
Such a relatable and clear approach to a very general issue. This should not be underestimated as it could very well save a composer/mixer from a block.. Thank you!
Man, I love your videos. So chilled and great advice!
Wow this is genius - I generally get really tripped up on bass guitar and end up hyper focusing on it early in the mix. A lot of times I'll spend way too much time getting it to sound good, and then by the time the rest of the mix has come together, all of my previous agonizing work that I did on the bass guitar doesn't even work anymore and I have to redo it - and redoing it usually goes many times faster when the rest of the mix is already together.
So thank you for giving me permission to just mute it / turn it down to where I can barely hear it and move on! Don't know why that never occurred to me, but now I feel like I'm going to get years of my life back 😄
I feel you 100%, my struggles with bass were exactly what led me to figure this out in the first place 😊
These are all so good! Thank you!
Simple, good advice! I can see how this approach could take the stress away. I love the idea of muting a problematic element, carrying on, and then coming back to it later.
Awesome video man I'm a computer engineer by trade and a very wise man once told me when designing a solution take your biggest problem and skip it by the time you get to the point you need it you'll know how to solve it apparently that works with mixing too!
Well said!
I had already watched this one so new time ago, more or less forgot about lt, guess a lot or most of it didn't apply then. But it sure does now. Good idea to rewatch an old episode every once in awhile
there's just so much in there.
Interesting approach. Good food for thought! 👍
never stop this videos greg!
No worries, you'll get tired of me long before I run out of things to share :-P
@@TheHouseofKushTV I'll let you know when we got to this point! ;) greetings from austria
Yes, the bass & vocals are yet the trickiest for me as well. Great tip there Mr. UBK, thank you! =)
Slowly going through your videos as I've only recently discovered this channel but I'd just like to say a big thank you for taking the time to make these. By far one of the best channel finds in a while. Cheers Greg!
0:25 I felt this!! Getting better over time!! (Get bitter or get better) 😁
So often, it's the psychological barriers that hold us back. Your advice is so wise, for life as well as mixing. Building momentum is so important with anything.Thank you so much as always! We are lucky that you are sharing with us...
The Bob Ross of audio production. Such a relaxing voice 🌲🌿
And great advice once again!
I find it amazing how you are able to help us advance in mixing with just words. You are a great communicator! Thank you!
Nice dropping knowledge over here!
I’m just some amateur guy, and I learned so much just by myself. I’ve watched countless videos, and some were more helpful than others. However, I can say with absolute confidence that I wished I had seen your videos from the offset, when I was struggling and discouraged. You know your shit. Even if I know a thing you teach, you bring a new direction or perspective and that’s interesting.
Using your methods has made my mixes easier, quicker, and more enjoyable. Appreciate you!
Ur video "don't listen to the snare" is the most powerful till now, well from my point of view... i am more a beat maker than engineer but the idea u incepted is universal if its about to crating vibez. thank u for doing this and not holding back! blessings
Can’t wait to try this on my next mix!! Thank you for the gems as always. One of my top 10 fav RUclipsrs for sure!! 🙏🏼🔥
The motivation and inspiration I get from your videos is invaluable. I know I've commented this plenty of times but thank you for sharing your thoughts with the world. Also, I can't get over how good the drums on the intro sound. I've been using that as a benchmark for my own drums and it's helped me so much.
Thanks so much! You're helping me to get my music fuller and clearer by the video!
That's brilliant! You just solved the rutt I was about to get in with the mix I been boxing work for quite some time now. I know now what to do first thing tomorrow when I get back to it. Mute. And get on worn everything else in it that had been growing beautifully and is almost done. I belief you, once I call that quits bringing back those few problem tracks sgould be simple math. Or not. But it will be the better for it anyway.
Such good advice for other things in life too thank you
Nice approach/advice. I commonly mix what people think is backward as I start with the vocal (or lead) and work back to drums. This way everything stays in the right relationship.
Thanks again Gregory for these wonderful insights and practices. ive been mixing recently and have kept some of your pointers in mind. I feel like I'm making small but significant progress. Thanks again.
Thanks Kush!
Please, Please do a lesson on bass.. Your summary of bass challenges sounds *exactly* like the struggles I am having. You took the words right out of my mouth. Please...
if that ain't the truth. great advice sir Gregory
This guy knows how to mix in the 4th dimension - giving great a advice while vid time’s racing to the 4 or 5-minute mark, and that’s that! Make his videos sooo much groovier! With the funky intro and outro, in that drop-mic style of I just gave you a jewel of his. Peace.
