Dave I've always found your ideologies and philosophies to be quite refreshing, especially when you see how many business pursue various routes including the reliance of social media on a broad scale. Having subscribed to your downloadable series last year, I would state your desire to develop and share knowledge was in abundance and enjoyed the series very much. Certainly stopped me dead in my tracks and got me to rethink and redesign my approach. This to me makes you channel and your website one of the best out there

Thanks buddy! Social media fads always change. It may take 5-10 years before we see the harsh downside that many businesses will face. More videos coming out in that line of thinking:)

-- Being retired from the corporate rat-race and now a photo hobbyist etc, I enjoy hearing about your philosophy on life, and about your minimalist lifestyle. I find your videos very interesting and informative. Although I won't be starting a photo business, I do find your thoughts on the subject worth listening to. You and I have much in common; I'm just much further down the trail that's all. Thank you for sharing all of your quality tips and information with us. Take care ,,,,

Hello Dave, it's good to have you back doing videos again. I'm sixty years old and I've been hiking and backpacking since I was eleven. I often go on serious hikes, 15, 18, 20 miles. I usually go alone because when I hike with other people they get tired too easily. When they get winded, I always tell them they are talking too much; it disrupts your breathing rhythm I say to them. So, how in the #&@$ did you walk and talk for fifteen minutes, climbing over blow-downs, slogging through marshes, and getting whacked by bushes!!?
Anyway, back to photography. I ran across your RUclips videos about a year ago, so I went to your website and purchased your course. It is not an overstatement to say it was life changing. I'm not a pro photographer, just a passionate hobbyist. I first learned photography back in the 1970's using film. I continued on and off until about five years ago when I really got the passion. The problem was editing. Photoshop had me completely intimidated. I learned to use Lightroom on my own but could not advance past that. Until your course. The way you structured the course in phases with each new edit reinforcing the previous skills and adding new techniques building on that foundation was perfect. I've been a high school teacher for thirty-one years and I know that is the proper way to teach. Additionally, the way you dove into highly technical concepts worked. You introduced the concept but allowed me to research your technical papers at my leisure. Meanwhile the course just stayed focused on PS techniques, clearly and methodically explained and demonstrated. June 2020, I retire after 32 years teaching. Because of your videos and your course, it's going to be all hiking and photography until I can no longer do either. Thank you for that.
Also, your mini-tutorials on RUclips are great. There is only a thing or two I might suggest. While watching a video (focus stacking, hyper-focal distance, exposure blending, etc.) I'm always waiting to see your finished image. Please consider ending with a finished image. One other suggestion; how about a few start to finish videos. Include the journey to the location, how you prepare for a shoot, the techniques used for that image, then the editing process, and finally the finished image. I would pay for that. (But free is cool too).
Looking forward to your next video. Thanks, for what you do. Michael

Hey Michael. I do endurance training year round for climbing and backpacking. This is my bible, Training for the New Alpinism: A Manual for the Climber as Athlete. You may enjoy the book! Those hike ranges are reallly good!
Number one rule of endurance training. During 90% of the training, routines you should be able to hold a conversation, without being out of breath, but at the top limit of this. If you're running or hiking too fast, you'll know because you won't be able to hold a conversation. The goal is to work this base up over time. Not hard fast workouts, but long slow ones each day. Time on feet is more important than how hard you can go. There will be times when you're pushing yourself, but those are the reserves done in the remaining 10% of the training.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the course!
The project I'm working on now, will follow me throughout the entire image creation process, through an entire trip, and post trip image selection and photo editing. This project will have multiple trips, where you can follow me through multiple eco systems and learn the process. It will be out in the next month or two:)
      Enjoy the day,
      Dave

Dave, I find it truly inspiring and comforting to know that this business model is working out for you. I must admit, having followed your endeavors for many years now, there have been some shockers, like when you completely quit all social media, and when you began talking about not just photography itself, but sharing (giving away, I feared) the "secrets" of your actual business strategy. Especially since you go off into the wilderness for 9 months at a time, right around month #7-8 I start worrying that you might have shut down the business and gone back to your day job. I suppose it is partly due to my own fears about taking my own leap of faith into a similar business model, admittedly. I keep telling myself it can't possibly work, because my C.O.L. is significantly higher, as someone who is much more tied down to a life in suburbia.
However, every time I watch your new videos, (and re-watch your old videos!) I get inspired again, to keep going. So, thanks, and I wish you the best of luck in this. (And since you're not on social media, the best way I can thank you is to share these amazing videos on Facebook etc. I hope it helps!)

Very much enjoyed the hike through the (I think) low lying regions of the Olympic Peninsula. Nice strategic analysis of two ways of making a living as an expert. If you are an expert whose knowledge base is pretty well defined and well known to a number of people, selling your time can make sense as you point out. But if you are constantly adding new knowledge, your model works very well. Especially if you are willing to trade dollars for freedom, which given taxes and the expense of a "upper income life style," make a lot of sense....

How did you broke that barrier?

You're welcome. 90% of my traffic in the beginning, as well as now, comes from search (google, bing, yahoo). You can checkout backlinko.com/ to learn more. He's the expert. His courses which are 2-3K are well worth the investment for learning this stuff at a really high level (the science of seo).
The remaining 10 comes from RUclips and before, I quit Facebook.
Quitting facebook, i saw a drop in 5% traffic, which was quickly gained back from using that free time building my website.
The time investment in social isn't worth it. There are too many other legit options for building long term traffic.

Dave your definition of Freelance work, in this case photography, is not totally correct. You can work as a Freelance photographer without the client owning the rights to your work. In fact that is and should be totally controllable by the creator. It all depends on the contract that you offer to your client for the work that they are paying you to do. Within that contract the creator of the images, the photographer, stipulates what, if any rights that are being sold or licensed to the buyer, the client. I have done Freelance work for 40 plus years and I have always maintained my copyright while at the same time I have licensed the usage of my work to my clients. What you are describing would be more of a definition of those who are dong 'work-for-hire' contracts, wherein the client has ownership of your created product. I would never except or work under such a contract. Being the creator of the images, I am also the seller of those images therefore I would be the one generating the contract not the buyer.

    • @DaveMorrow
