      I agree with you 100%. I am nearing 70 now and remember the good old days without all the gizmo's. People are far too controlled and influenced these days and spied upon too especially here in the UK, CCTV everywhere no freedom at all. I remember well my old 35mm Zenith, cheap as chips but it never let me down. I do admire Dave's lifestyle and only wish I was young enough to do the same.

Your brain works like you walk young man ( thats a term of fondness here in Wales ), 90 miles an hour - no wonder you cover the milage you do !! :) Your values are not only "sound" but incredibly insightful, and I thank you greatly for your generosity in sharing both your photographic knowledge and also yourself. The interesting thing about these type of videos you post - more to do with approach, philosophy, points to consider, are that I feel as though we are having a conversation about it. You are not lecturing, not instructing, but telling me about things that you have thought about, have an opinion on and practical experience of. Its then up to me to think about what you’ve said and to what extent if I agree/disagree. The main point is that you are bringing up interesting, relevant points that DO make me think about things, for example, my photography and social media: and that Sir is a good thing - thank you 👍

    I really enjoyed this video and really agree with your approach for your business. Being independent is a great choice via your email list approach while using (but not being dependent on) social media sites as additional markets for exposure of your website/community. As to what control social media should have over what is put on their site.....that is an interesting debate. One word I think a great deal about (being an old man of 66) is tolerance. As societies views become more polarized the degree of intolerance of another point of view increases....sometimes dramatically. Without tolerance and true listening there is no room for exchange of ideas and learning, compromise, ultimately progress. Maybe a bit off topic....LOL .....but your video spurred that thought this morning.

    Really enjoyed this, definitely has me thinking for goals moving forward. In 2019 I’m trying to move away from social media more and put my focus into more traditional methods of reaching a local audience. Social media was fun for a few years, especially Instagram, but I’ve grown to really dislike the short life span my images tend to have sharing them that way. I much prefer sharing my work via large prints rather than a tiny image on screen that gets a like, then forgotten with a quick scroll down. Glad you’re putting these ideas out there

    A great video. I often wonder, about the big RUclips channels, what do they do if they are shut down?
    Social Media is very random marketing wise, it takes a lot of time to manage without the return you expect. Investing in your own website and doing you're SEO correctly is my way to do what I want to do as well.
    However, as you precise, it has some downsides. The biggest to me: Google. If you want to be seen, you need to rely on Google search engine algorithm. There is no more any true concurrence out there, at least for the majority of countries around the world.
    Which means that if Google wants you to go down, they can.
    You're right on a crucial point though: if you can build an audience before this kind of thing happens, that's the most important. Business means working with your "customer" (don't like the word), and a lot of companies forget that.
    I think social media will change drastically and quickly in the next years. First of all Facebook goes down and I think it will continue to do so. Maybe its creepy business model will go down as well. People are more and more aware that social media use a lot of psychological tricks to hook you as much as they can, without providing any value. I think and hope, maybe, that the game will change on that level.
    About pop ups on websites: I will be honest, I don't like them. If I want to subscribe on a newsletter, I'm sure I can find my way on the website. You can put it on every pages, I don't care. But when I begin to read something, it's kind of aggressive to be stopped and be asked to do something you didn't even think about yet. I feel forced, somehow, a bit like when a seller just directly jump on me after 2 minutes I'm in a shop.

    Hey Dave,
    Excellent as always. I read Deep Work last year and it is so fantastic. Unfortunately I didn't apply it then, but I re-read my notes and am doing it now. To go with that same process, I've been reading Cal Newport's new book titled Digital Minimalism. I think you'd find it interesting, but you're most of the way, if not all the way there already. It's time for me to put in the work and feel real satisfaction.
    I will add one thing to consider about RUclips. It's very easy to get sucked into a wormhole while on RUclips, even if the original intention was to watch educational content like yours. I have many videos to my right that would suck me in for hours. It's in RUclips's best interest for all of us to get sucked down this rabbit hole. For this reason, I am making a rule to only watch RUclips when very specific channels send me email notifications, like you do, which just adds to your point that email lists are the best way to go. I think you're on the forefront of this and we'll be seeing a lot more of this coming from more mainstream sources in the next few years. Social media CEO's know it's coming, there are more ads than ever on Instagram and Facebook.
    I hope you are doing well, and I look forward to the next video.
    Daniel

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Daniel, Just downloaded digital minimalism. Thanks for the recommend. 80 pages through it now. I'm glad someone is putting this info out there. For me, most of it is in place, but I've also picked up a few new ideas, which is well worth the read.
      In terms of email list, all of the big bloggers that I followed when building my website 8 years ago were building email lists. They still are. Anyone that's running a big online business says their most valuable asset is email list. Most social posts from big bloggers link to a post on their site which collects email. It seems the new era of "influencers" never got the note since they were not born in the blog era. It's gonna hit them hard once facebook becomes myspace and they lose all contact and have no website influence. Same with photographers. Most photographers don't have strong websites, all their eggs are in the social platform. Pretty scary from a business owner perspective. Enjoy your day man. Always nice to chat with you!

    • @daniel-godin
      @daniel-godin 5 лет назад

      @@DaveMorrow You are spot on about FB & IG becoming the next MySpace. I'm not sure they will go away completely, but it won't have nearly the volume it has now (we're already seeing this on FB). Many people are going to be in for hard times if they didn't save or funnel people into their own lists. We'll be hearing sad stories on the news about all these "kids" who are reeling, in debt, and broke. The older folks may laugh at them, but they were on the cutting edge of new technology, being very creative. It's too bad a lot of them don't have mentors to help them see what's coming. You're really going to help a lot of people Dave. Keep it up!
      I'm glad you're enjoying Digital Minimalism. You said you downloaded it, do you use a kindle? I've found that highlighting and reading through the highlights when I'm done to be very beneficial, as well as revisiting months/years later. A very cool guy named Derek Sivirs got me onto this. I think you'd like his stuff. Do you have a strategy to getting the most out of non-fiction books?
      Cheers

    I have to admit I was a bit sceptical when I saw the title of the video - I was affraid that it may be full of treehugging stuff (which is OK, just not my cup of tea), but the thoughts and ideas you shared were very good. besides all of that gatekeeping, I think that true killer for creativity is if someone starts to hunt for likes and followers and soon realizes that a perfect shot with lot of effort behing can not compete even with "nature shots" as "legs out of tent with desaturated colors" that can be produced way faster and easier...

      Hey Mac. For sure. Every new technology always brings gatekeepers, all throughout history. Printing press, phone companies, internet companies, social media companies, it just so happens that now you can step around some of them, where before there was not an option. Check out Master Switch Book by Tim Wu. It's all about these trends.

    thanks for the thoughts Dave. I agree, having a website and email list is really your and nobody can take it, as oppossed to social media. That§s the most important part of my business too. I am still not "brave enough" to quit social. I do not have enough content on the website which would attract huge number of people coming organically just from Google search. Maybe I should just keep going and work on more content. Thanks anyway!

      You're welcome. No need to quit social if that method isn't for you. There isn't a right or wrong. The key point is that you understand what you own and what you don't, which it seems like you already do:) PS: You can pull a large amount of traffic with 5-10 highly ranking long form articles. It's not about the amount of content, but the quality and it's ability to rise to the top of search rank. Have fun!

    Two videos ago, you suggested to me transferring my following from instagram to my personal website. I've left Facebook, but Instagram is still that connection to the "paid-in-euphoria" world. Since then, I've redeveloped my personal site and catered it to my style of storytelling. It's everything I want and nothing I don't. I've also built a few mailers and subscription pushes (mailchimp) for those who decide to follow me off of social media. These are blasted out to my audience on Instagram and others.
    Currently, I'm working to build up quality content on my site, push teasers on instagram of new work being featured exclusively on my site, grow an audience and traffic on my site, and establish a core audience of reliable followers who are interested in my story without strings attached. It's all about getting the number of people receiving email list up a little.
    Then, I'll unplug completely from Social Media.
    This is all happening because you encouraged me and inspired me to think about it this way. Thanks again for everything. These videos, I swear, are priceless.

    Thanks for an interesting video.
    Users don’t pay for the social media sites. They are set up and run by private companies. It’s up to them (within the law) to do what they want/need to do.
    You Tube is the same. Few users pay for it, so Google, who had the idea for it and set it up and run it, can decide everything about how it operates. It’s not there as a public service, though people may think it is, or ought be.
    An owned web site is I agree the way. You own it, dictate what goes on it, and look after it. You can completely control how you talk to your audience/users, but you have to PAY for it.
    You don’t pay for FB, YT, etc - they are FREE at the point of use, though users effectively pay by buying advertised products, etc.
    A “state” run social media site funded by taxes would be a different thing, but there would no doubt be rules in the way it’s run, though they’d effectively be decided by users through a democratic process.
    If FB and similar sites wanted to they could just shut down the whole thing. Now wouldn’t that be fun! Suddenly many people would have loads of time to really get creative!!

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  5 лет назад +6

      You're welcome. That's all true. I think a culture of paying a small monthly fee for memberships on websites of creative people that inspire you would be a much better model than the "free" / ad based model. People expect all content to be free now, but they don't seem to understand how everything is running on the backend. The internet is still brand new, so we will see what happens.

      On many social media platforms, /WE/ the users are the CURRENCY with which the large corporation that owns the platform does business with the other corporations that want to advertise. Our habits, our shopping inclinations, even our private information in some cases, ...that's all a currency.
      Now, we have a seemingly infinite supply of this currency, since part of it is just who we are, and the other part of it is our time.
      However, as many unfortunately discover, we over-spend our time, and it winds up costing us our own happiness in the long run when we don't achieve our own goals in life.
      So, just be aware of how you're investing your time on social media, and you'll be OK.

    I'm currently going through your paid course. Very much enjoy it. I like the way you think about these things. Somewhat along similar lines … Adobe. I plan on only keeping Photoshop while I'm going through your program, as I don't want to have to re-invent the wheel with a different piece of software.
    After that, though, I'm planning on moving to Capture One and/or Affinity Photo, both of which allow me to "own" the software. Are there downsides? Maybe some. But Adobe is no longer the only serious game in the photography world. Those days are receding in the rearview mirror. So, if I can free myself from the eternal monthly fee and just get what I need by paying for it once, I'll be doing that.
    As for FB and Twitter, I first became acquainted with you with the Petapixel Podcast (or maybe the No Name Photo Show) brought you up because of the video you released when you exited social media. I'm thinking quite hard about leaving it myself. I've gotten a number of clients from social media … but not enough to really need it. And I like a concept that you put forth in a different video … that if one takes that effort that they put into social media and funnel it into other ways of growing your business … like your website … it is in the end a better approach.
    Enjoying following you and learning from you. Keep up the great work.

      Hey Thomas. Thanks for purchasing the course. That's awesome that you're enjoying it. The subscription thing... It's a tough one. I really like the Adobe Platform for Photo Editing, so I see the subscription as a long term investment in what they are doing. The one reason I really like Adobe is that they don't constantly try to innovate their basic photo editing tools, which are already near perfect. New companies seem to innovate for the sake of saying they have new stuff to drive sales.
      Second topic. Time on earth is a zero sum game as far as we know. Might as well spend it doing stuff that you love & that will allow you to grow long term in a good direction.
      Enjoy that course & have fun out there
      Dave

    I watched this a few times. Great video, but a bit confusing. I am trying to move INTO photography myself. The learning curve has been steep, and I think we are finally just starting to produce some amount of respectable results. IT has come, however, with a price. We have NO IDEA how to start really branching out on our own, and being independent of social media. We felt compelled to use social media to get started, but honestly, have been disappointed with the results thus far, and maybe, perhaps, we are not really looking at it correctly. I am curious if you could expound just a little. I am hoping to use photography into retirement, and at 55 I am just setting the foundation for later.

    Thanks Dave. Appreciate the vid. Some interesting points you make. A non advertising content provider such as yourself, what's in it for RUclips? Why should they allow you to use their service? Do you think in retailing terms you may be the loss leader and that we, the consumers (shoppers) will buy something else whilst in the RUclips store that generates income for them?

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  5 лет назад

      You're welcome. RUclips operates using a modified 80/20 Principle (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle). More like a 99/1 principal for their model. 1% of the creators produce 99% of the ad revenue. The remaining 99% of people that don't produce much money for youtube are the cost of finding that 1% that do. They value me or anyone, because at anytime I can turn on ads with the click of a button. They also know that out of the millions of bad videos, some good ones will rise to the top, gain large followings and produce alot of money for them longterm. Big data is all about statistics of the masses, not individuals.

    I got 2 emails "How social media controls your ideas" and "A huge mistake photographers are making" both lead to this video. Was that your intended link for both emails? BTW - Interesting subject and food for thought. A few years ago when I own a business, I used social media for advertising the business but found more successful was the direct ads to the email list. The list was only people who signed up for it so they were truly interesting in getting the information. Social media had it's place but when asked "how did they here about..." It was Email, Direct Website , Friend then Social media" . It might be different today but that was my experience.

      Consider any website a tool. You have a desired outcome, and the website can help you to get there. First define the outcome. The question is, do you need the tool, and is it the most efficient method to achieve the outcome which you're using the tool for. For this reason, I don't use it. I have in the past though.

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  5 лет назад

      Not really.... Hosting companies are not a true gatekeeper. There are hundreds of hosting companies, including the ones that host porn, and other sites that you're never gonna top as far as off "obscene" content. Also hosting companies are usually for freedom to say anything you want, within legal bounds, otherwise they can't advertise their hosting company very well. You own all the data you hold on their servers. It's very easy to change hosting companies without any downtime. Gotta have your site backed up locally. That being said, they don't have control over any gate between my audience and I.

      Hey Rids. You're welcome. I made a video on this topic: ruclips.net/video/4VsMXh2RprM/видео.html There is not a blueprint. To run a business you need to research and design all this stuff out on your own. I learned everything from 3 websites and lots of personal testing / experimenting. Here are the sites: Backlinko.com Smartpassiveincome.com and tim.blog If there was a blueprint, everyone would be doing it successfully and then the value would drop to zero, making no one successful. The one key factor that no one seems to put in is the long term constant effort, directed in a way that will last for the long term. There are no quick solutions. The journey will be fun!

    Dave, you're probably going to get poo-poo'd from a few subs, but not from me. I agree with you, not only about using social media for posting your photos, but about using social media in general.
    You have to ask yourself, what was your life and world like prior to FB and the rest of them? And is it really better now? How much time, emotion, and energy do you spend on these channels?
    Are you always waiting on the next comment, like, or whatever? Are you hurt when you don't get many likes when you expected many?
    And let's talk about the concept of hearts (=love), or "friends".
    The word 'love' used to mean something much more powerful than it does now, where it's used so redundantly for so many other words.
    A friend used to be someone you trusted, hung out with, did things with, shared important things with. But now, a 'friend' is more often than not a relative stranger (if not a virtually complete stranger). Think about that for a second.
    FB is is human-free, folks. Their computer algorithms dicate who stays on the site, and who gets penalized. And your rebuttals or arguments go nowhere nor are they reviewed by anyone. Think I'm wrong? With hundreds of millions of users, how in the world could FB hire enough humans to handle all the suspensions and complaints, and everything else that goes on behind the scenes? Answer: they cant. That's why people get canned with no recourse, and all their photos become the property of FB.
    And we havent' even gotten to the subject of censoring channels, people, or comments. Nor have we talked about the cheating these companies do with monetizing or not, with deleting comments or likes, or with boosting the likes. Amazon does this too in many cases.
    Now, let's talk about data mining. Don't believe they're selling your information to the highest bidder? You are a fool. Wake up America. Go back to writing emails or snail mail, go back to actually calling and talking to your friends. One day you'll find your whole life has passed you by because all you did was text, and like, and you were hooked on dopamine.

      I agree 100% but it's not just America, it's a global disease and the people cannot see it at all. I do not do ANY social media, I'm too old anyway. • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  5 лет назад

      Hey FFL. I think capitalism is the best model tested so far. Definitely not against it. I'm 100% against the unexamined life and unexamined thought process. Corporations can build anything they want, but it's the consumer choice, at first, that makes them successful. Bad products or companies, in most cases, start out with bad consumer choices. It's the masses bad choices and the bad company, combined, that cause problems. There has been no other era that has reduced human suffering as much as the current one. Capitalism, with all it's flaws, it's the single biggest reason for this. Without capitalism I would not be doing what I am doing. Everyday wake up excited to create new stuff and have freedom of expression and ideas. This wouldn't exist without capitalism. There are endless other ways I'm grateful for it.f
