I think being born in a Chineese family is such a privilege, Chinese is such a hard language to learn and is the most popular and used language in the world! Ur amazing Annie! Love the content switch up💕
This video was so beautiful in portraying your culture Annie. Me as a Mexican whenever we would visit Mexico I could hear how someone's Spanish is better/stronger than mine. It gave me insecurities on how my Spanish sounds to other's but, I've learned to embrace it.
I understand your struggle annie. Im Malaysian and has never really spoke malay until like 2 years ago. It really takes time to learn, quite embarassing too as you're learning what's suppose to be your native language as your second language. I've improved since though, im able to use teen slangs these days too, and understand the little jokes in tiktok videos. I know you can do it🥳🥰
I love this video. I'm a Chinese Australian and I have so much regret that I didn't learn. I'd love to do a video like this one day when I'm more confident but I only started learning Chinese again less than a year ago so there's a lot more to learn. You spoke so confidently you should be so proud! 💗
So I am basically the opposite, I'm french and learning Chinese at the moment. I was really happy because I could understand a big part of what you said without using subtitles 😁
Annie, you’re not alone! I, as a 1st generation Mexican-American gal, too “hated” speaking Spanish and anything related to my Mexican culture… My subconscious wanted to disassociate from it because 1. childhood trauma caused by machismo (translated: toxic masculinity) and 2. what society, media, etc. was SHOVING down my subconscious’s throat… It’s not our fault. We were only children and now that we are growing up, it’s a blessing to recognize that it isn’t too late and you still have time. 🌱 I feel super thankful to have gotten out of that mindset ages ago. Wishing you all the best on your journey with your beautiful culture. 🇨🇳 🌹✨ P.S Your Chinese sounds perfect to me.💝
I 100% understand Annie! I'm black and hispanic and when i was younger I never really got in touch with my culture and I wanted to learn other languages besides Spanish. But around a year ago I understood how important it was to understand my culture and why its important to learn Spanish. It's so important to know and love your culture and where you come from yk
this is so cool!! i am a chinese adoptee, and like majority of adoptees i do not speak mandarin. i did not choose to learn mandarin in school, instead i choose spanish. but it was for different reasons to why annie didn’t choose to learn mandarin. i’ve had bad experiences with mandarin teachers. once in like fifth grade one mandarin teacher was asking everyone in the class questions when she was taking attendance. but then she asked all the asian kids a harder question, assuming that they knew chinese. one of my friends was japanese and she couldn’t respond. i had to tell her i was adopted and don’t speak mandarin, and at the time i wasn’t super confident about that piece of my identity. so when i was choosing my language in middle school i was self conscious about being chinese and needing to learn chinese. now that i am a junior in high school, i regret not taking chinese, but it also seems a bit too late to take it now since i am in my fourth year of spanish. but yeah, that’s my little rant about this :)
oh no, i'm so sorry to hear that you had negative experiences :( i think it was really cool and strong of you to want to learn about your culture more! i hope that doesn't discourage you too much and know that it's never too late!! i added a few resources for chinese in the description box, but there are so many other options available too. rooting for you!! 💗
its never too late. there are adults and elderly people learning chinese. i neglected learning chinese when i was young because i just thought it was boring and didnt care about learning it at all. now i regret not trying harder lol
Loved this video !! Definitely relate to the regret over not taking learning Chinese seriously when I was younger. Great to hear your reflections and your desire to re-embrace your culture :)
just a few quick tips!! as someone who speaks mandarin, the accent is definitely there, like some of her tones are not the most accurate. for example, 因为(yinwei) it supposed to sound a bit different. also it should be 一本书(yi ben shu) instead of 一个书(yi ge shu). small things like than can make a huge difference. keep improving and you'll see how confident you can feel in speaking mandarin! :)
I loved this video Annie!! I've taken Mandarin in school for 3 years now, but don't have a lot of opportunities to use it outside of school. This was so cool to watch and understand!!!
Thank you Annie this video really inspired me. I am half Haitian, half Jamaican and a lot of the time we just speak English at home and my mom will speak Haitian Creole here and there and my grandma’s English isn’t fluent so she’ll speak a lot of Creole too but I can only here and understand like 40% of what they say but I cannot speak any for myself and I definitely related to learning other languages like Spanish instead of my own language so I’m gonna try to incorporate learning Creole into my life more cause this video made me realize that it is important and I shouldn’t just ignore it anymore 😊
Loved the video. Just came here after watching your tips for a new channel o have a daily vlog channel too. Also loved listening to you speak mandarin, I'm an Indian living in Sweden now and I'm learning Mandarin cause I love the language
Pls make more vids like this Annie, u have just inspired me to learn my own language rather than a European language first, thank u sm. Love from Ghana 🇬🇭❤️❤️☺️
Great video, Annie! I totally can see that you took the feedback from you last video about your channel possibly being more personal to heart! This year will be great for you :)
I love this Annie so much.... Been following you for a while. Your growth is inspiring. The fact that you are proud of your roots makes you more attractive
Girl your mandarin is freakin good. I quit Sunday Chinese school because my teacher was super old school and would hit me on the head with a book and I told my mom and we stopped going. We tried to learn it at home but it was hard with my mom reaching us. I didn’t get to work on my mandarin until I was working full time and was assigned Chinese clients LOL then I was forced to learn. I can’t believe I chose French over mandarin but mandarin also wasn’t an option in high school. ASIAN PRIDE YALL
I totally understand the regret u feel. When I was in Chinese school I viewed it as a chore. Now I’m trying to improve my mandarin vocabulary and I’ve been much more into learning about my culture. I’m also guilty of using Chinglish a lot at home when their are gaps in my vocabulary knowledge.
Also the grandparents thing is so relatable my knowledge in mandarin is not good enough to have conversations on a deeper level and I want to be able to do that as well before it’s too late.
i can somewhat relate. I am Spanish but since I was 4 I have lived in a foreign country. I don't feel like I can relate to my Spanish culture and my Spanish really sucks. So I'm really trying to improve and get to know my culture better.
I can relate to teh part about not being able to communicate with your grandparents. My mom immigrated from Russia and I never really learned Russian because my Mom was trying to learn English. Now I am making more of an effort to learn Russian so that I can communicate with my Grandma. My Grandpa died before I really ever got to know him and I regret not knowing him better.
Yeah I don’t much about my culture because my family has different ones like I am a quarter German and that’s all I know. My MawMaw (grandma) is German and to this day has a really strong German accent even though she doesn’t speak it anymore. I mean I live in a German town here in the U.S. so maybe I should explore more? Anyways thanks Annie you made rethink that maybe I should try to explore some of my culture :))) well even though i don’t what else I am mix of. I do know I am a quarter German.
Im a viet American. I was enrolled into a Spanish class for elementary school so I’m fluent in both Spanish and English. I actually do better in Spanish in school than English bc it was my main lang for 5 years until middle school when I was in more English classes. Now I’ve been in Spanish for 10 years. I wish I had learned vietnamese earlier on but I really wasn’t interested and it’s what my whole family speaks. And where you talk about how your grandparents don’t really know who you are, i feel the same thing with my great grandparents who only speak viet. I’m trying to learn viet now but it’s been hard because i think it’s a lot easier to learn languages when your young.
My family immigrated from various European countries during the 20th century so it’s been enough generations that I only ever spoke English. I’ve always been interested in languages though so when I was 11, I decided I was going to learn Spanish. I started by using duolingo and eventually would do two hours of practice a day. After five years, I finally finished my course in 2021. I’ve also been learning Italian now for a few months and I’m building my vocabulary. I’d love to branch out and learn more eventually but I think it’s so cool that you embrace your culture. I’ve heard mandarin can be difficult 💕
I really appreciated hearing your perspective. I can't relate to that extent, but as an American who's developed a solid Mandarin proficiency after living in Beijing for almost 3 years, I think that if you were to commit to moving to China for a year and immerse yourself in the culture, you'd sound like a native in no time. Gap year maybe? Best of luck!
Truly this was amazing! It would be so nice if you were to upload videos of you speaking mandarin every alternative week 😭this video was absolutely amazing ❤️
I’m homeschooled and part of the program is learning Spanish. I started learning French on my own in May of 2021. Sadly, I had to stop learning French because it’s too hard to learn two languages for me 😞
I am half Russian and half German and I grew up in Germany, so I can sorta relate. I feel so disconnected from my Russian half and it makes me so sad. I just want to be able to express everything I think and feel in Russian without having to translate stuff. One of my goals for this year is to really learn more about my culture and background but that’ll be super hard since COVID prevents me from visiting my family:((
although i’m not asian (im half russian and half ghanaian) i have also experienced trying to reject my own culture. i grew up in a white town and an overly white school so i would blame my parents for only speaking russian for the fact that there were some words in the english language that i just didn’t know.
annie! i loved this video, please do more of them. such a good reminder that language and culture and family background is important to everyone's identity, and that we shouldn't forget that 🤍
I lived in China for 6 years and I speak Chinese but I can’t speak my mother tongue. This video was so interesting to watch. Because I’m no longer in china, I’ve started to forget a lot of chinese. Hopefully I don’t loose it all as I no longer have anyone to speak Chinese with
This video was really inspiring, and it gave me the idea to make a video of me trying to speak Spanish for 24 hours. If I do end up making that video and posting it, I'll make sure to credit you for the idea
i'm literally the same way i'm nigerian american living in a predominantly white neighborhood and that definitely influenced my take on my culture. i'm a sophomore in high school but it was only during quarantine that i actually started to relearn my native language
I'm born outside of China and my parents spoke to me in a mixture of English and Mandarin so I wasn't able to speak Mandarin as fluently, let alone read nor write well. Moreover, I was sent to an international school from elementary til high school which caused my love for only the English language to expand. It had only been a few years since I realized how important it is for me to know my mother tongue so I re-learned everything on my own. It's not easy but let's all do our best and hold onto our identity! And 4:19 got their priorities straight 😭
If I had one wish it would be the ability to speak different languages because it's so fascinating learn all of the difference accents , dialects and pronunciation
I totally relate to your struggle of not wanting to identify with the culture and language. I am also Asian American and, I use to struggle because of the area I live in. I really loved this video and all your other ones as well. Thank you!
Me interesan mucho videos como eses! Actualmente soy bilingüe, pero quiero añadir otro idioma a mi plato pronto jaja. Buen video! Soy una americana con raíces alemanes. Mis padres no pueden hablar el aleman, y básicamente ha muerto en mi familia. Quizá algún día, decidiré aprenderlo y revivir mi cultura :)
Hey Annie! What mic do you use in this video? It almost looks like a podcast mic, but I was wondering because I have been looking for one and yours sounds great! I think it is really great that you are not afraid to show who you are. Your voice is beautiful! ily!!
I just started learning Mandarin and I'm 16! I have missed so much time of learning not just the language but all of my Chinese culture. I'm a 3rd gen who's half white and half Chinese, I feel similarly to you about the grandparents. Unfortunately, I didn't have that realization until my 爺爺 passed away.
A platonic boy friend would be 男生的朋友instead of 男朋友! I've been fortunate to grow up part of my life in Taiwan and be able to learn about my heritage and language in my parents home country! I definitely feel like I oppressed that side of me and almost felt ashamed of being asian during some time in my life growing up in the States. I think it's a very natural thing that happens to kids from different cultures growing up in America but im so glad that Annie is talking about it and being open with her experiences!!
Im Filipino(Asian) and i feel the same with my language, i mean im very fluent with our language but I feel like majority of Filipinos tend to think that anything western or european is the best which isn't always the case. If you'll watch any Filipino movies or series they tend to depict the rich or the educated as an english speaking person which propagates that mindset. Our language is not commonly used in intelectualised settings like school, formal events, and papers. Langiage is culture and it is terribly sad that we mostly use it for slang. If you'll listen to our many languages and the commonly known Tagalog, it's beautiful and almost effortlessly poetic if you choose it to be. Ps. Nothing dissapointing or less patriotic in speaking and learning other languages as long as u don't intentionally look ypur own of a less kind.
I can relate to this, mainly because my parents speak our cultural language at home and although I understand it, it’s hard for me to speak the language. It’s embarrassing for me because I have friends who can speak there cultural language at home with their parents and I can’t :(
love how you say that you are Chinese American without vauging it as "Asian American" and refuse to associate with the word "Chinese ". And honestly you speak really well.... try to speak it more you'll pass for native
ahh I absolutely love this video, I grew up in Australia & am kinda whitewashed too so this was comforting to know that people out there share similar experiences :)
im half irish and half chinese and i used to hate chinese and i still do (kinda) but thats because i was forced into it. but now i think chinese is a great language to learn despite me not being very good at it :/
I love that you never hide who you are. Your culture and language is a huge part of who you are and I’m so glad you show it proudly ❤️ awesome video!
thank you!! i have definitely learned (and am still learning at times) to love myself and i want to share that feeling with others :)
@@AnnieLong you’re nice

This is so cool!! I’m so happy u shared this with us!!
watching this makes me want to learn mandarin 😭 it sounds so pretty
It was so cool to hear you speak only Chinese! I always find it amazing when people can speak in multiple languages. I only know Greek and English ✨❤

I love this video already and I’m not even 2 mins in. I’m glad you made this video , also I really love the tones in mandarin 😭😭❤️
hey annie, you can say 男性朋友 if the guy is a platonic friend! You did great speaking mandarin, hope you speak more❤

would love to see this as a recurring series!!
Yesss post more videos like this; I love it!!

I agree like it’s so interesting yk
I totally relate to your struggle of not wanting to identify with the culture and language. I am also Asian American and, I use to struggle because of the area I live in. I really loved this video and all your other ones as well. Thank you!

I just started learning Mandarin and I'm 16! I have missed so much time of learning not just the language but all of my Chinese culture. I'm a 3rd gen who's half white and half Chinese, I feel similarly to you about the grandparents. Unfortunately, I didn't have that realization until my 爺爺 passed away.
people who can speak another language are so cool I WISH I WAS BILINGUAL
hey it's never too late!! i put some resources for chinese in the description box, but there are so many other options out there too 💗
How'd u find the Relationship goals book?
Ps. Nothing dissapointing or less patriotic in speaking and learning other languages as long as u don't intentionally look ypur own of a less kind.
as an asian american this was so comforting to watch
You sound really good, well done!
thank you! i definitely needed google a few times...or more haha
@@AnnieLong don’t worry, I’m in the same situation too with 2 languages though 🤦♀️
this video inspires me to learn my parents mother tongue.
I've been inspired to do the same in Haitian-Creole tomorrow! Wish me luck!!!
I am really excited 😆 see you in my new year so we can get together soon 🔜
ahh I absolutely love this video, I grew up in Australia & am kinda whitewashed too so this was comforting to know that people out there share similar experiences :)
im half irish and half chinese and i used to hate chinese and i still do (kinda) but thats because i was forced into it. but now i think chinese is a great language to learn despite me not being very good at it :/
when I was younger I never wanted to learn chinese, but now i try to learn as much as I can in my free time
