      Darrell, I see a potentially serious issue with this pickup design, similar to that of some “noiseless” pickups out there that have similar separate 3+3 coil arrangements: With the separate 3+3 coils, this could theoretically mean that if you bend the D or G strings, they could get pushed outside the magnetic field and thus go silent, more so on the neck pickup than the bridge, and most likely if you bend around the 12th fret, where the string can get displaced the most from its normal path. Is string bending a problem this way on these pickups?

      Interesting design. Are they hum cancelling? From the tone it doesn't sound like it, but hard to tell from my phone speakers.
      Also, good note on the dime size pots. I'd believe the target consumer would value full size quality pots. I certainly would, for longevity and feel, in my case. Even if the impedance in dime size is the same and makes no difference in tone.
      Maybe the pot zise doesn't matter at all? What do you think Darrel? Good topic for a new video?

    I think it would be nice to have a dual (stereo) output on the guitar and route one channel through an octave pedal. This way you have much more control compared to lowpass filter from a BOSS OC.

    • @UncleRoykus
      @UncleRoykus 2 года назад

      The idea of playing one instrument but having it sounds like many is pretty neat. Emily Hopkins is harp channel demoing effects pedals that can use separate effects chains on different registered pickups. Been thinking about this idea since discovering it. Turns out for guitar there are designs for hexaphonic pickups - six individual pickups for each string and normally use a controller to manage all the different routing configurations to two or more outputs.

    • @AmerikkkaGuitars
      @AmerikkkaGuitars 2 года назад +1

      Could wire it that way but you would lose the noiseless aspect of it unfortunately. You would have to stack each half with another bobbin underneath and use thinner coil wire for sure, maybe as thin as 44awg. I contacted them, wondering if they can design something like that. Hopefully I can collaborate with them on my guitar builds. I know I'm smalltime pissant luthier. Hopefully I can get to management. I can make guitars to easily incorporate these pickups.

    I must agree on the dime pots. After making the effort to swap all my guitars that had dime pots and meager caps over to the "CTS" style pots with big orange caps, I can't say I'd be glad to switch back. I have the feeling you could just insert a 5 way switch with phased out options on 2 & 4, and get a very similar result.

    Thank you, Mr. Braun, I ended up giving these a shot in a newer G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy (semi-hollow). There was some indecision on my part concerning which beastie was going to get the bipolar pickups before settling on the G&L. I also went covered for the neck pickup, AlNiCo2 for the older tones, too. The one thing I would recommend is to have S&S Winding wire the kit with “bullets” (small banana plugs) as this will make the instal a serious breeze into whatever instrument you are using to host these pickups. My G&L went from a very sweet strat to a jazzy ice queen tele. I just wish there was more room to add more controls in order to get all combinations out of these pickups.

    1- Try adding some dirt in position 4. It should be the ideal setup for tight heavy riffing on the low end and mellow soloing high up.

    Darrell, I am a little disappointed that you didn't tell us whether those pickups were hum cancelling. I'm sure that they are. That design is more an application of Leo Fender's split coil pickup designs as seen in the venerable P-bass pickup and the Wide Range pickup set from years gone by. Those were humbucking. All the settings of this new set should buck him as well.
    I'm just championing full disclosure and complete information. Obviously, hum rejection in all switch positions is a GOOD THING. Otherwise, Teles can be some NOISY critters!

    I love strat sounds but hate playing them, like teles much more. But always missed the stratty quack. Might just have to try this!

    Darrell, as a telecaster lover I am interested but there are four version of pick ups on the site, could you tell us what ones you demonstrate.

    The G&L Comanche 6 has switches that do that also.
    Also kinda reminded me of the new Espada which was Leo's last invention. The Espada is a great guitar by the way and very affordable. 🙋‍♂️

    Due to the two small winds, how does this affect the 60 cycle hum?

    Wow, never seen any pickup configurations like this... neat but not sure if it would be for me

    I had a similar idea to this like 3-4 months ago, but instead of tele pickups I had the idea to use strat hotrails, using only half of each bobbin from the south and north coil, I also had the idea of using only 1 bobbin to make thin single coils.
    Really weird seeing this video lol

    From Leo: Are they hum cancelling in position 1 and 5?

    Good sounding pickups and interesting design. I'd probably have to try them to know if I liked that setup or not. And, I'd have to test how the volume and tone controls worked with the split design. Personally, I'd guess that 2 tone controls and 1 volume would work better. That's what I did on my 2-pickup Strat.
    Regarding the size of the Tone Pots, the different diameter of the Pots would affect how fast the Wiper sweeps across the Resistance Strip. But, I don't know if that really makes any significant difference. Someone should conduct a test. Who knows, maybe smaller might actually feel better. A lot of RUclipsrs have commented about small size pots, but I don't know if anyone has done a good blind test to how well they perform and feel. Thanks

    Can you review the 2021 Squier contemporary special strat? It has a really cool and unique bridge/middle pickup design and its nothing like I've seen before. And also interested in the build quality :)

    Are some sized pots really THAT much of a downgrade? Or is Darrell just picky?

    Hi Darrel! I have been watching your channel a lot and enjoy the discussions you have on guitars, amps etc. I’m from India and have a Squier Affinity Tele which I picked up the second hand market. It’s in very good condition but I don’t like the sound of the pick ups. I want to upgrade the pickups and the pots. Could you please suggest something for me. I’m a home guitarist and don’t want anything expensive. It should have a decent tone.

    I know the neck position of a Telecaster and position 5 sounds like both pickups in parallel but nevertheless that's a nice sounding set.

    This isn’t new, it’s existed in old Sears guitars from way back if I am not mistaken.

    Hey Darrell , I got an Epiphone guitar at a pawn shop going out of business auction and just thought it was a low end guitar so I stored it (temp.controlled) I recently got it out and it’s a Epiphone Demon V (E-Series )
    Electric Guitar Flying V /Bikini Logo /Floyd Rose tremolo . It looks great and is in really good shape .Are you familiar with this model ?
