i used to have a hard time saying NO, i figured out as i have got older, i dont have to do every job that calls in!! there are plenty of contractors out there that will cut your throat for a dollar!! in fact i told a ex customer last week "i can stay at the house & go broke... i am not working for nothing" yes it might sound harsh BUT he will call again, usually on a saturday afternoon when the "low bid" wont answer the phone & something is broke.. and they are working all weekend!!! guess im getting old & grumpy!!! LOL
It's pretty simple to me. If i go look at something and estimate material / consumables/ rentals and labor and add 35% to it all and they are alright with my estimated completion date i do it. When it's a mess and time sensitive, and they are pressuring you to take the job its a no-go. Tells me multiple ppl have turned it down, and they are desperate to get somebody to bite. Always listen to your better judgment.
I'm a Machinest, and I learned years ago that saying NO is saving you a lot of headaches. Especially if you're having a gut feeling telling you no. We've all had those jobs that we wish we never started because it bit us in the but!
I think saying no to a job in an industry is hard. It's hard to be willing to give up a little bit of income now knowing that you might get nothing but knowing that it might become a lot for waiting for something better.
What's the biggest job you said 'no' to and why? What were the results of you saing no?

I’m pretty bad at saying no but I try and keep the mindset of a “contact is a contract” and may help later down the line
