  • Time for a new book tag, this time I'm doing the "Totally Didn't" book tag! Here are books that waste my time, they didn't need a sequel, or a love triangle or a cliffhanger!! Lots of these are popular YA books I picked up because of booktube so there might be some unpopular opinions... oops! What are your pet peeves while reading? :D
    Questions:
    1. Totally didn’t need to have a sequel/sequels.
    2. Totally didn’t need to have more than one point of view.
    3. Totally didn’t need to change cover art through the middle of a series.
    4. Totally didn’t need a love triangle.
    5. Totally didn’t need this book to be included in this series.
    6. Totally didn’t need a cliffhanger.
    7. Totally didn’t need to have just one point of view.
    8. Totally didn’t need that much hype.
    9. Totally didn’t need a relative book reference. (Eg, For example: Hunger Games fan would love Divergent.) planning on doing some!
    10. Totally didn’t deserve my time.

For the third question, one of my favorite trilogies of all time, Across the Universe, switched covers for the third book and IT'S SO UGLY. The first two covers are GORGEOUS and all full of galaxies and they're awesome, but then they redid all the covers and they are all SO ugly. And the third book doesn't exist in the original covers, which is such a shame.

    • @robpaul7544

Most of these things either don't bother me , or make me forget the book instantly.. so no real answers.
I remember the Wheel of Time has some POVs I disliked, which was part of the reason I dropped it.
And I think most hype is just nonsense or marketing, so don't let that guide my choices.

For the books covers: GOT (en intégrale VF), the first books I get beautifull illustrations and then the TV show started and we get ugly images from the show 😭. I also think to an old manga: Basara (in french) all the "tranches" (don't know the name in english) were white except for a random one black 😨.
I soooo agree for the winter promise, I have no idea why they selling it like that. Oh and by the way I think you have to say the "s" at the end of Christelle Dabos ' name.

I think that the Hunger Games Trilogy could have had more than one POV tbh. While I was reading, for once I wasn’t thinking a ‘love interest’ viewpoint was necessary (though sometimes I did think a Peeta POV would have been nice), but I was actually constantly wanting to know how Haymitch was feeling during the entire trilogy.

The Raven Cycle is my favourite series but I think if you don't like magical realism and/or lyrical writing you won't like the books. The main thing with this series, everyone says, is the characters but even more important is the atmosphere and how that's what makes me love the characters and the books in general. In my opinion those books might just not be for you and you're probably, best case scenario, just gonna like them a little, so maybe it's be better to read something else, that you're gonna enjoy more. But it's your decision in the end of course 😊 very interesting video, like always.

Emily, I really think you need to give "Always and forever Lara Jean" (the third "to all the bys I've loves before. I totally understand your hesitation (the second book was just a "filler" book) but the third one is awesome. It explores important things that should be discussed in Lara Jean's case, for example, your dad falling in love and keeping (and low-key criticizing things about) her Asian identity, plus it delves on the theme of friendship that we didn't have time to talk about because of all the boys... Finally, this book is about Lara Jean trying to find her true desires and needs instead of latching onto imaginary boyfriends.
It's a very summery series, so I suggest giving this book a chance this summer!

At changing the cover art half way through the series I was expecting The Bone Season. The difference between my gorgeous copy of The Bone Season and then The Mime Order does bother me. I think that's a series that gets waaaay better after the first book though. I'm so glad I spotted the second one on discount and decided to give it a go despite finding the first one meh.

A really annoying cover change is the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix. The first three came out ages ago and he just recently came out with two more, in the same series, but with different cover art. So if you have the original three you can't possibly get matching covers unless you re-buy them all.

I’m currently reading release and I don’t really understand the dual POV, I’m hoping it links up somehow but like you said it feels to me like two separate books? The only time cliffhangers bother me is when the author doesn’t write the next book.

I'm a big fan of Cassandra Clare's books and I can promise you that I'll get better!
I've read all the books of The Shadowhunter Chronicles (I think there are 18 books now) and City of Bones and City of Ashes are the worst ones...
City of Glass was o.k. but all the other ones were amazing! I absolutely adore the Infernal Devices series (It's about Jace's, Clary's and Alec's ancestors)! You should definitely give it a try.
You can read The Infernal Devices without reading The Mortal Instruments btw

The same happened to me with shadowhunters. I read the first book and enjoyed it (minus the pointless love triangle that just didn't need to be there) until the ending happened, then the second and first half of the 3rd one annoyed me so much so I ended up never finishing that one or continuing the series. I watched the tv show but I just couldn't deal with the books after the plot twist

It's really interesting for me that you mentioned Cinder as overhyped. ( I really like the 4 books. Nothing special but pleasant to read.)
Because it's not hyped at all in my country. To the point of not being even TRANSLATED to my language. Only 2 books was translated and than dropped. 2 books wasn't even published here because of the lack of hype.
    :)
I had to read it in English to finish it.

Hi! As usually, love your video!
I notice issues with points of view when there are multiple ones, and it feels like we're reading from the same character's perspective; the characters are then interchangeable, and it bothers me! It's probably because I love reading multiple povs books!

Sadly it did go on a bit too long in places and really needed bringing back a bit, but I still liked the series and wouldn't have read or known anything about it if you hadn't recommended it. Hope the healing is going well. Take care :)

My answer for changed cover art is the winternight trilogy. The first one (the bear and the nightingale) had a gorgeous original cover that definitely represented its folklore roots better and then they switched to a very typical ya cover that isnt awful looking but compared to the original is so disappointing)
