  • Most gunmakers now offer a range of guns with stocks designed for ladies, today I take Rizzini's V3 out - featuring a stock over 2" too short for me, to see how I got on.

    A few thoughts from a female sporting clays shooter:
    - you're right, for women as it is for men, there is no one size fits all stock. Shorter stock and smaller grip will provide a better start for a lot of us, but height of comb and cast are all going to be very individual and it'll probably still require adjustment. Why not sell these with an adjustable comb as standard to at least deal with some of that?
    - the assumption from so many blokes that women should start with 20 or 28 gauge always makes my hackles rise. Why disadvantage yourself from the start. You don't see any of the the top 20 female ESP shooters on the Registered circuit shooting 20 or 28 gauge for good reason.
    - it's nice to see a gun maker that hasn't 'feminised' the look of the gun just because they've changed the stock dimensions to offer a better starting point for female shooters. I won't mention names, but there is a certain ladies gun that has roses that look like a prison tattoo and even if it fitted me I wouldn't shoot it on principle!
    - shame you couldn't rope in a female shooter to help with your demonstration of it. There are plenty of more than competent female shots out there that I'm sure would have done a good job and would give any females looking to buy a gun more confidence in it than watching a bloke hunch himself up to try to get it to fit.

      My wife started with a 12G Beretta Silver pigeon Vittoria and now also has a 12G CG Julia (Possibly the one you hate 🙂) and both have adjustable combs. My wife is about 5'4" and 62kg so not big and started shooting in her 60's. The Beretta was just under 8LB and the CG is almost 8.5LB (My 694 was that weight), although it balances in a way that makes it feel lighter. We both shoot the same 28g cartridges and she could happily shoot 100 or more without noticing any recoil. Getting a 12g with some weight to it was actually good advice, as it's cheaper to run and throws out as much lead as anybody else. The other thing as you get older is having somewhere to go if the gun becomes too heavy. My wife can get a lighter 12 guage with 24g or 21g carts if she ever feels the need, before ever considering a 20g or 16g.
      If the Julia is the one you dislike it's quite interesting, although I appreciate it could be marmite. I got my CG Invictus V before she got the Julia and people often commented on mine being a nice looking gun. Now I never get a single comment, as all the men want to look at her Julia because it's so unusual and has some very nice wood on it. I'm not bothered honest!!

      @@geoffcowen8912it's not the Julia, it's one of CG's earlier offerings - the Syren Tempio. That rose carved into the stock is awful. I'm a similar height to your wife although I'm considerably chunkier, but have no problems at all with a 12 gauge K80 Parcours 30" barrels. In my 50s with rubbish upper body strength, but I shoot every week and probably do 30 to 40 Reg comps a year with it. It's as much down to balance as it is to overall weight. I hate a front heavy gun - I just can't get the control I can on something that balances on the pin or is even slightly behind that. I end up shoving too hard to get the thing moving and then whizzing past targets as a result.

    • @geoffcowen8912
      @geoffcowen8912 Месяц назад

      @@jennybaker7993 I think they may have stopped the rose on the stock now. I think the original Julia had it, but not this version.
      My wife tried the Tempio and Julia, but preferred the latter. To be honest, I don't think she would mind if it was completely plain. I think her Julia is slightly rear weighted, which makes the gun feel lighter in the hand. Strangley, I can shoot her CG (my sight picture is correct) but the Beretta is terrible on me, even though they both fit my wife perfectly. Very strange.

      My wife and I both bought new 12G Berettas last year/year before (can't remember). She got the Vittoria due the the grip size and Monte stock but at 5'11" it was too short so as part of the purchase Beretta Melbourne did a great job fitting it. Its great that brands are making stocks to fit women but it would be nice if they made the stocks longer - its easier to remove wood than add it and each gereration of women are getting taller. My Beretta lives in the safe now and I shoot dusty old SxS's exclusively now - my wife has a couple too :)

    • @jennybaker7993
      @jennybaker7993 25 дней назад

      @@scottbrooks7978 at 5'11" I would have thought she could have skipped doing for the Vittoria and gone for a standard Beretta stock. I'm 5'4"ish and have small hands, used to shoot Berettas and had a standard silver pigeon and DT10 at one point. Grip size was never a massive issue for me on either of those, I did have to get both shortened though. Comb was probably a bit high for me on both for a traditional sporter set up, but as I started shooting with those two guns I learned to shoot seeing plenty of rib and that's now how I prefer to have my guns set up. When I changed to a Kreighoff, the grip size was a issue. I adapted by pushing my hand further around to make sure my finger was fully on the trigger. Worked OK, but after years of doing that and thinking I was developing a trigger freeze / flinch issue someone I trust looked at it and said it's almost certainly a grip issue - pulling upwards making the trigger break weight feel different than it should and me reacting as if there has been a misfire. I ended up going down the custom stock route to sort that out. I've got a Vittoria stock on an A400 Xcel and the grip on that is ideal - had to put an adjustable comb on it to sort cast issues though. Gun fit is a really personal thing and I think we all end up going through a journey to get it right, unless you are one of the very lucky few that are the size that one of the main manufacturers has designed to.

    My wife's first over and under was a Beretta Silver Pigeon Vitoria 20ga. It became a gun safe queen after I got her a 12ga Fabarm for shooting sporting clays with her ladies group. I took the Vitoria out and added 1 1/4 inches to the length of pull with a new Kickeez pad and spacers. I went shooting with it last week at the sporting clay course and helice ring, and had a blast. Sub gauge day will be fun from now on with my buddies.

    Yes - yes you can. I'm 6'5 and yet have shot some of the best days ever with one of a pair of Beretta 20 bores with 28" barrels and a stock that is comically too short for me. Like all things it's your approach 😁

    my 687s in 20 bore has a 13 3/4 “ stock and I love it. It fits me well and was bought 2nd hand but with very little use. More importantly I shoot well with it and enjoy every time I take it out. Great film and thanks for sharing

      Yes and reloading doesn't offer enough cost saving unless you load specifically buck or slugs.

    I shoot a Rizzini Venus 12 bore. Designed as a clay gun for "ladies" with a higher comb adjustable monte carlo stock [for the long necked]. Once you get used to having a higher combed gun, and therefore a different "sight picture" it is a dream to shoot. Not too heavy at 7.5 lb, and 28" barrels suit a short stocky bloke like me. The finish on it is beautiful as well. Not a cheap gun when I bought it, but I think Rizzini prices have come down a bit over the last year or so.

    On your pre Xmas night vlog I asked the question on a ladies gun so my good Lady can start shooting and you advised a 28 gauge would be a good start. I will have a look at Birmingham and talk to the guys at Rizzini as this looks to be a prime candidate for her.

    It is like you read my mind with this video! I impulse bought a Bettinsoli Omega Steel because it was at an irresistable price and like it a lot. It's left me wondering whether or not I could enjoy shooting with it or sell it and buy something with better fit!
    Question, may I ask what happened when you were in the hospital for two weeks? I hope you are doing well!

    I have a Winchester 1897, 115 YO, Field, that was given to me by a good friend when he passed. The stock has a rather large V shape, about 2.5in. I am attempting to repair it, but keep it within the same stain as the mag-grip. Or, shold I go for both?

    Had one of these for a while... just cant ever seem to get on with it, shoot much lower scores than any other gun I own, although it is very nice and well built.
    And to clarify it isnt just the fact its a 28... its the fact i cant get on with the gun as I shoot my 410 with 11 grams better 😂

    I actually prefer a stock to be a little short. It puts the center of mass closer to your body and generally makes everything easier. But that also depends a lot on the grip trigger relationship which to me is the most important part of the gun and whether or not I’ll like it. I have shotguns I like from 13.5” to 15” and they all work fine. But get the grip trigger wrong and I won’t keep it. 👍🏼
