Two day Hoku Ula sailing in Santa Cruz, California on a 27' stretched Ulua outrigger sailing canoe, designed by Gary Dierking. Hoku Ula means red star in Hawai'ian
That looks awesome! I am learning boatbuilding in Germany at the moment and my plan is to have something near your boat in 2 years. Can you tell me what kind of Rigg you set on her?
Das ist ja nett, jemand aus Deutschland. Wo wohnst Du denn?

Looks like you are in the US. I got the trampoline material from Sailrite and sewed some reinforcement around the perimeter. For my new trimaran I am using dyneema netting. Tacking: yes, it has a leeboard, I guess the main issue is the inefficient sail that does not let you go close enough to the wind. As the unpowered path takes so long you loose all the momentum and get stuck in the waves before you turn to the other side. I had added a jib later which helped quite a bit.
@@SamuelLanghorn Thanks for the response! I really appreciate it. Yes, im on the central coast. I’m about to start building a sailing canoe and have a lot to learn.
@@SamuelLanghorn Morro Bay… I’m going to build Gary Dierking’s “Wa’apa”. I have all my plywood and hopefully within a week I will have all the wood for my chines, gunwales, and bulkhead perimeters.
I use this material: www.sailrite.com/Trampoline-Mesh-Soft-White-63 ama height: good point :-) since I stretched the Ulua to 27' from the original 18' I also changed iako length etc. Gary Dierking was helpful with these changes. However initially I had the iaokos set too low. You see this in the earlier videos. I then added around 4-5', you see that in the subsequent videos. So that the ama would not be dragged too much. I was not too excited about the look :-( In the last stage I added a deck , in this configuration the higher iako setting came in quite handy, so after all it worked out very well.
you are correct. But the reason is very simple: you have one hand free when you have a tiller :-) My rudder broke several times over the years, so I had to learn how to use the paddle to steer. It works quite well indeed.
Hi Bullitt, thanks for your interest. I am currently adding a deck and a jib to the canoe, to make him (in Polynesian culture the Va'a = canoe is male) more ocean worthy.
Looks good fellas! Just finished my Gary Dierking 16ft Wa'apa with double outriggers, just waiting for some decent breeze to get out sailing again! ruclips.net/video/Jz2txHlLwVk/видео.html
Sailing a piece of art, she's beautiful! I'm looking at all of the Wharram and Dierking designs now for one that can handle island hopping.
of course it depends on which islands :-) in rougher waters I recommend adding a deck with cockpits. You can see that in my more recent videos.
Fast ride! Thanks for sharing...
she is amazing!

Beautiful!
Where do you get trampolines like that?
Why was tacking difficult?
Do you have a leeboard?

Linda canoa !!!!!
What are your trampolines made of? And how do you determine how deep to set the port ama?

Very strange to see a tiller on a sailing canoe, why not use a steering blade?

any chance you're looking for (competent) crew? l'd totally excited to check her out. l'm from SF.

that is very cool. if u need crew l'm there.
what materials did you use to construct him?
Western red cedar, strip planking. I followed Gary's instructions pretty much: homepages.paradise.net.nz/garyd/plans.html
