I discovered this film just yesterday but i fell in love with it not because of the hot scenes it’s because of the story. It’s a very heartbreaking ending, the guy really loves the girl even if they all started with lust but he continued to love him until he die... what a very loyal and lovable man he is 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Don't we all start with lust? I hope so😉 She loved him too all right. Impossible not to cry at the end if you get that. It's a shame they didn't get to be together, but I'm glad they got to know this special, unforgettable love before going on with their destined lives. Too many people never get to, even with the people they marry.

The real life relationship was far less romantic, it was more of a brief fling with no emotional connection. The young girl (who authored the book) described the feeling of sex with him as "the aftermath of rape" and felt it was revolted.

The Lover is a Franco-British film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, released in 1992. It is the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Marguerite Duras, published in 1984.
At 70, Marguerite Duras recounts her adolescence in Indochina and her “hidden periods”. The author evokes the difficult relationship with her mother, the love she has for her little brother, her physical attraction for a friend at boarding school, and in particular her relationship with a Chinese man twelve years older than her.

I believe if you all read the book this movie was based off you’d feel differently for the girl, or really the woman who wrote the book about her own life. You’d understand that she wasn’t selfish, but deeply traumatized and trying to survive. It’s a much more complex, beautiful story than the movie portrays. I highly suggest reading the book…!!

He loved her youth, initially, as he declared his love for her having not known anything about her. He may have fallen for her eventually, but he did so knowing in his heart that he would never truly be with her., so loving her would have no real repercussions. They were both just distracting each other in the end, her from her poverty, him from his lack of direction.

If I had seen the film at my 20s I would it is romantic. At my 40s I just saw a narcisistic and egocentric girl with a lot of lust, who only cares to the damage she is doing to the other in order to boost her ego. You can see it by the initial story she invents about the woman int he boat, that her lover had commited suicide. At the end she tries to be in better light by saying she only understood she was in love by hearing chopin... 😂 Not only she is now a saint but also an intelectual. Marguerite was a piece of work...
