I just got my first ever 3ds 4 days ago! :D Took me 6 years looking for a good price! Mine is the new 3ds xl metalic blue and only the top screen has the good screen
@@NivexGameplays i just bought a metalic blue new 3ds yesterday. I keeo seeing people aaying they are buying them. Had no idea they were so popular still and in demand.
IT IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN PERSON. If you are a PC gamer remember when TN panels were popular, cause they had the fast refresh first? The colors looked waaaay more limited compared to IPS ones we have now
Hell at this point the way things are, i don't think anyone gives a damn. We all just want to own a 3ds due to nostalgia and fear of becoming crazy expensive. It already is actually.
It’s not that big looking at a screen straight on but when ever you tilt the screen slightly you definitely notice colour and black distortion that’s a problem with handhelds they move around a lot .
I know the video doesn’t well represent these screens like looking at them in person would, but the ips screen looks really dark, and ive read that the ips displays crush blacks particularly more than the tn’s do. you seem to like that in this particular game, but its worth mentioning that oot3D is criticized for overly brightening the game compared to the original n64 version. The tn looks more ‘correct’ to me, despite looking very washed out in the video. I wonder how a game with lots of dark and shadow detail would compare on these screens like, say, resident evil revelations. I don’t know if this is more or less than the average ips, as ive used mostly ips lcd’s and never had an issue with black crush, but it looks apparent here. Honestly, the color doesn’t seem that important to me as the big reason to desire ips, but rather motion clarity, as in less ghosting. I see people claim the tn screens have a faster response time and less ghosting (even though its already pretty bad on mine), and others claim it doesnt apply to these screens and the ips is just better here with less ghosting on moving images. any input?
The trouble with this comparison is that the tn one's light has been turned up where the ips one hasn't. I do think the ips one is better but this is not a good comparison.
I have an og 3ds and a new 3ds xl with top IPS. The difference is really noticeable NGL. Bottom IPS is kinda unnecessary but top ips make a huge difference. TN screens are good enough if youre looking at them dead straight but theres always a slight angle to it considering the hinge and TN screens just have bad viewing angles
My husband bought me a Metroid special edition New 3DS XL when it first came out at the end of 2017. The screen and colors on it are so crisp and nice - I did a phone camera test so, I’m assuming it has an IPS screen since it looks like the one you have on the right 🙂
I didn't know about this, but it turns out the new 3ds xl I bought has an IPS top screen, and TN bottom screen. If it's really a 10% chance to get an IPS, then I was lucky I guess (bought it for 100$ basically unused with the box)
Same here. Love how it stays crisp at any angle …kinda shady that some people got stuck with the far inferior double TN at the same price. So if 1 in 10 gets the good top screen. It might be 1 in 100 to get a double IPS. Those are going to sell for a pretty penny in the future.
I have a dual IPS Fire Emblem Fates limited edition 3DS. I really like it and the difference between ips and tn is VERY noticeable in person (despite the people trying to downplay the difference in the comments). TN over brightens and washes out colors.
you cant objectively say IPS is better, just because its "noticeable" in person means jack shit, your eyes are definitely not trained in color theory. the reality of the situation is that most people have tn screens, which is perfectly fine. you are over here acting like the 3ds plays AAA titles at 4k60 or some shit. IPS 3DS's are seemingly unattainable now unless you are willing to fork over insane amounts of cash (especially considering how much the 3ds has already shot up in price). Get off your high horse and realize we're playing games from 10-20 years ago on a handheld that has the same power as a leapfrog. Get over yourself.
@@0123vegeta You can really tell with the viewing angle difference ..my bottom panel is white and unreadably washed out at angle, while the top stays crisp at any angle. It’s a huge difference in quality.
It’s a drastic improvement based on what I’m seeing. I always did think my 3DS images looked a bit washed out. I checked with homebrew and sure enough both of my systems are TN. After watching this, I did spend the money to acquire IPS as my new main console. The difference definitely seems drastic enough to warrant it.
It would be better to have the TN straight on and the IPS at an angle for the comparison since you tend to play straight on. It looks like the TN is set brighter as well: the bottom screen (being the same on both) is brighter on the left. I'm sure the IPS is better, but I don't think this shows a representative comparison.
I bought a used limited edition new nintendo 3ds from the style boutique bundle and it has double IPS screens. I just learned about this a few minutes ago, I'm happy I got lucky there.
My New 3DS has the TN screen. I noticed years ago that if you turn the 3D on the colors would become more vibrant and closer to what an IPS looks like. So I usually play with the 3D turned on the lowest level.
yea I got one and they are both TN however I did end up modding and Rosalina menu I turned up the gamma in the settings and things look a little darker and not soo washed. I also seen there was an old Luma Version where it allowed you to change RGB values individually and almost make the screen look almost like an IPS but that is long gone unless you have an old DS firmware or something to access that one. But yes, and IPS screen is superior and I would prefer it but as of now TN is the go with a tad bit of an edit on the filter settings
Checked my 3ds with 3dsident that I bought back in 2015 and turns out I got a double IPS randomly lol (Non-XL version I didn't even know the regular could have IPS but that explains why my battery runs low so fast)
I have a new 3DS XL and a new 3DS, owned the Xl first and bought the reg size one on a black friday sale and transferred my data to it but noticed the top screen was kinda off.. later on I booted up my XL one and realized it looked a lot better so I transferred back when I found that my XL had a IPS top screen.
I’m the most critical and picky person. So glad my n3dsxl has both top and bottom better screen. At all angles no color fades and images don’t blur. I can read all text no matter how much I tilt the screen left or right, up or down. 😅

I got a dual IPS off eBay for £90 because the guy I bought from didn't know there were different screens and I asked him to take a pic of the 3ds at an angle
Same here and some pixels died on my upper yesterday im gonna replace it but idk if I’m gonna get an iPs or if the 3d will work since I can’t send it to Nintendo
People will still pay good money for it on the resale because it's a limited edition. I just paid good money for an new animal crossing edition. I bought it knowing that it had dual TN screens but I don't care, because it's a limited edition model which I value more than a marginally improved screen.
What you're seeing in the video is a lot less obvious in person and is an effect of the camera. I don't have the expertise to explain what's happening there, but those lines are not there when you're looking directly at it.
contrast withstanding does the ips show thicker horizontal lines? i have the og 3ds were all tn and its well it kind of bleaches out certain pictures. however i like the case and design much better tn the xl. the bottom screen dominates the xl and it wont fit in a pocket as easily. i am interested but its a lot of money.
had a brick 2ds for the longest time and 21yo me was lucky enough to get two ips screens on a random new 2ds xl. and i didnt even figure out until i got my brother one too but it had tn screens
I bought a New 2ds XL in 2019, brand new retail price. Is there anyway to tell which I have by serial, cause its really difficult to tell which is which if you don't have a side by side. My next question would be, did any of the new 2ds xls even recieve the ips screens at all??
Even if it doesn't, 2ds XL is much newer console than the New 3ds series...so I'm sure it must have at least better screens...right? Though really, it's hard to find a cheaper 2ds XL compared to a cheaper new 3ds...wonder why? Cuz its much a newer console?
I'm not sure exactly what determines whether one has a TN or not, and I don't think anybody but Nintendo really knows. I believe only the "New" 3DSes have IPS however.
Unfortunately I can't confirm that, it isn't something I've really experienced with my TN screens, but I can confirm that retro games look very sharp on the IPS screens. I played the entirety of the first 3 Zeldas on my IPS screen and they looked great.
Which one do I choose, 2 tn screens pikachu edition or top ips and bottom tn regular white? Both looking brand new and for the same price 250$. Need some advice
@@SvetoslavG I'd be careful with the Pikachu ones because a lot of those are just aftermarket shells put on to other consoles. You can get the shells online cheaply.
@@ikewagner Yep you are right. I asked for more photos and found out the serial number on the back of both consoles is fake and exactly the same which indicates a re-shell... I will still get one of them as there aren't better deals in my country. Hopefully it's done well and there won't be any problems
the bottom screen plays a large prtion of games for mine. because i have cfw. i wouldnt play one of these without it tbh. outspoken yes but its worth it trust me to learn how to get around and use cfw. i have a program that allows me to put any full length movie onto a 3d player and watch it with the 3d effect. i have taken dozens of shows films etc so i can watch them in my free time in the 3d. cartoons from the 80s and any kind of 2d is compatible to be doubled up and viewed through xilisoft. still people asking as much as a grand for a dual ips screen.. its just not sth i mean lol the things eaten enough of my time up as is.. but the 3d is fun and if you get hooked like myself you might prefer the better and larger screens. even at that im not rich enough sorry to afford because i got mine very discounted and it has a ton of issues lol but i have had a very fun time with it. all 3ds are good but its a pity nintendo decided to throw fans a curveball this way. a minor thing to them im sure like never bring out mother 3 in the usa.
Well it definitely isn't worth a grand for dual IPS, I can tell you that. Things are ridiculous right now with the eShop closing. I'd wait a while or else seek out a Japanese one, they tend to be a lot cheaper.
I assume they're no more (or less?) likely than any other standard model. If you can locate one from someone who bought a later model one that would be a good bet.
@@drunksquirrel2051 you sure? I just bought a galaxy w serial #qw1729 and comparing it to the new 2ds xl which all have TN, there’s a difference. I also do not know what I’m looking for tho
The difference is more noticeable on a camera but with the human eye the difference is not that big! It's the same like ps vita 1000 has e better screen then the ps vita 2000 But it only stands out if you put it side by side and compare. Otherwise you won't see the difference tn panel is also really good
I don't know about that comparison... The difference should not be *this* big. Are you sure both 3DS have brightness set to 5 and power saving off? Besides, I have the Majora's Mask special edition and it most definitely has dual TN screens. It's the European version though, maybe the NA version is always IPS. I launched OoT just to compare and it looks way closer to your black 3DS (so the IPS) than the other. But I'm fairly certain my console has TN screens, so I suppose it's just the angle. If you play normally, I don't think there are any major differences.
This comparison is 100% accurate for North American New Nintendo 3DS systems. I have three 3DS consoles, one of them having an IPS screen. It really is that much better.
@@slyrxccoon I don't think it's a "game changer" insofar as it's anything that's necessary to buy (as I said in the video) but I mean, I'm looking at them side by side and the IPS screen really is just better looking. I think my camera is definitely adding some amount of artifacting to the TN screen for sure but it is a dramatic difference in person. Like I said though I don't think it's something worth paying extra for if you're on a budget -- the TN screen is still quite good.
I didn't know about this, I just ordered a lime green new 3ds. One of the amazon exclusive ones that has super mario world installed, does anyone know if those ones had the ips screen? Also I think I've seen 3ds replacement screens online, are those ips and would you be able to put them into a system that originally had a tn panel if so?

You could've just said you didn't watch it. Clickbait for what? I don't make money off of this and I don't have any investment in people buying one over the other, I'm just talking about some stuff I have.
I think I just searched "new 3DS clear protector" on Amazon and it was something like 12 bucks, if I remember right. It fits just fine, it simply pops over the shell and has a few plastic hooks around the front side, while the back has some that mold up around the rear end of the console. Comes on and off easily, but it is quite cheap -- I haven't dropped it (yet) so I can't rate it for shocks. It does have kind of an ugly rainbow distortion to it in the right light but it's not really there to look pretty. There are official Nintendo ones but they're expensive.
@@ikewagner I want to buy one from Ebay claiming to be dual IPS but they have covered the barcode on the back. Are they attempting to scam by blocking out the code? The pictures they have uploaded seem to show an IPS screen but as the screen is white it is hard to tell. What do you think?

Same here and some pixels died on my upper yesterday im gonna replace it but idk if I’m gonna get an iPs or if the 3d will work since I can’t send it to Nintendo
id look at it another way :D indoor and outdoor version ^^
...And if you decrease the brightness of the TN screen, is it difference even observable ?
Yes, very much.
Are you able to physically tell if the screen as IP or not while it’s turned off? maybe say if it was more gray or black in color.
lucky me,, I just bought 2 new 3ds xl.. one dual IPS, and the other one is upper IPS lower TN
I've has this for years and I just now found out I have the one onnthe right
I have the majora’s mask edition, sadly screens were TN
People will still pay good money for it on the resale because it's a limited edition. I just paid good money for an new animal crossing edition. I bought it knowing that it had dual TN screens but I don't care, because it's a limited edition model which I value more than a marginally improved screen.
i can see the difference betwen them, the red one in videos has like weird lines and the black one wich has the ips creens doesnt have them
What you're seeing in the video is a lot less obvious in person and is an effect of the camera. I don't have the expertise to explain what's happening there, but those lines are not there when you're looking directly at it.
My baby shower on august 27th!!
contrast withstanding does the ips show thicker horizontal lines? i have the og 3ds were all tn and its well it kind of bleaches out certain pictures. however i like the case and design much better tn the xl. the bottom screen dominates the xl and it wont fit in a pocket as easily. i am interested but its a lot of money.
I am not sure what you're asking about with thicker horizontal lines. As far as I know, pixel for pixel resolution is the same.
Just bought the blue one with ips screen cant wait to get one again and play the shit out of the pokemon games
had a brick 2ds for the longest time and 21yo me was lucky enough to get two ips screens on a random new 2ds xl. and i didnt even figure out until i got my brother one too but it had tn screens
Can you fix a bricked 3Ds?
New 2ds’s are Tn you can’t get ips new2ds’s so unless they had broken screens and were replaced this is not true.
I bought a New 2ds XL in 2019, brand new retail price. Is there anyway to tell which I have by serial, cause its really difficult to tell which is which if you don't have a side by side. My next question would be, did any of the new 2ds xls even recieve the ips screens at all??
To my knowledge none of the 2DSes had IPS screens.
Even if it doesn't, 2ds XL is much newer console than the New 3ds series...so I'm sure it must have at least better screens...right? Though really, it's hard to find a cheaper 2ds XL compared to a cheaper new 3ds...wonder why? Cuz its much a newer console?
No. New 2ds’s have strictly only TN panels. A quick google search can tell you this along with videos on RUclips.
My old 3ds xl looks more like the one in the right, I thought the old ones only had TN though?
Like, it doesn't look as disgustingly bright as the left one
I'm not sure exactly what determines whether one has a TN or not, and I don't think anybody but Nintendo really knows. I believe only the "New" 3DSes have IPS however.
Are there any good aftermarket IPS screens for New 3DS XL? Like how the GBA has IPS screen install kits.
Not that I'm aware of. I haven't messed with 3DS repair
so uhh im guessing im out of luck for having a new 3ds xl with both tn
TN screens are perfectly fine.
My dual tn has shimmering/ghosting on 2d retro/scrolling games like nes gba etc, and it bothers me so much. Can you confirm the ips fixes this issue?
Unfortunately I can't confirm that, it isn't something I've really experienced with my TN screens, but I can confirm that retro games look very sharp on the IPS screens. I played the entirety of the first 3 Zeldas on my IPS screen and they looked great.
Great I have the Majora’s Mask special edition !
Which one do I choose, 2 tn screens pikachu edition or top ips and bottom tn regular white? Both looking brand new and for the same price 250$. Need some advice
@@SvetoslavG If I had the choice I'd take the IPS. Japanese I assume?
@@ikewagner Thanks for the reply and yes both are japanese. Will probably get the IPS one
Hopefully it's done well and there won't be any problems
plus to tell just tilt the device left to right colors washed out means tn ips colors dont wash out at different v9ewing angles
Every video I've viewed about this is 90% bragging about their luck.
the bottom screen plays a large prtion of games for mine. because i have cfw. i wouldnt play one of these without it tbh. outspoken yes but its worth it trust me to learn how to get around and use cfw. i have a program that allows me to put any full length movie onto a 3d player and watch it with the 3d effect. i have taken dozens of shows films etc so i can watch them in my free time in the 3d. cartoons from the 80s and any kind of 2d is compatible to be doubled up and viewed through xilisoft. still people asking as much as a grand for a dual ips screen.. its just not sth i mean lol the things eaten enough of my time up as is.. but the 3d is fun and if you get hooked like myself you might prefer the better and larger screens. even at that im not rich enough sorry to afford because i got mine very discounted and it has a ton of issues lol but i have had a very fun time with it. all 3ds are good but its a pity nintendo decided to throw fans a curveball this way. a minor thing to them im sure like never bring out mother 3 in the usa.
Well it definitely isn't worth a grand for dual IPS, I can tell you that. Things are ridiculous right now with the eShop closing. I'd wait a while or else seek out a Japanese one, they tend to be a lot cheaper.
Do you think the galaxy style ones will have it?
I assume they're no more (or less?) likely than any other standard model. If you can locate one from someone who bought a later model one that would be a good bet.
Galaxy 🌌 models are all TN
@@drunksquirrel2051 i hope you are right
@@drunksquirrel2051 you sure? I just bought a galaxy w serial #qw1729 and comparing it to the new 2ds xl which all have TN, there’s a difference. I also do not know what I’m looking for tho
The difference is more noticeable on a camera but with the human eye the difference is not that big! It's the same like ps vita 1000 has e better screen then the ps vita 2000 But it only stands out if you put it side by side and compare. Otherwise you won't see the difference tn panel is also really good
It's definitely pronounced on camera but once you see them side by side in person it becomes easier to spot an IPS.
I do, they're both set the same. And I have a third one with TN screens and it looks the same.
This comparison is 100% accurate for North American New Nintendo 3DS systems. I have three 3DS consoles, one of them having an IPS screen. It really is that much better.
@@slyrxccoon It could just be the display age. My TN screen system is a day one console. Usage might make a difference.
This guy sounds like edward snowden lowkey
Does the IPS screen make the 3d effect better?
It does not. It's purely for crispness of display.
No, it's really arbitrary
I didn't know about this, I just ordered a lime green new 3ds. One of the amazon exclusive ones that has super mario world installed, does anyone know if those ones had the ips screen?
Also I think I've seen 3ds replacement screens online, are those ips and would you be able to put them into a system that originally had a tn panel if so?
It where cool if you showd us the brightness in the Options.
But cool Video
Question: Is it possible to turn down the brightness on the top screen?
You can on all 3ds and 2ds models
@@user-lg5xu6id5j
How?
@@mayrahemmerechts5867 in the home menu, the button on the top left corner of the touch screen, where you apply themes and badges. You just scroll down on that menu*
I have one with a IPS screen
Just bought a random new 3ds xl second hand and I think I have an ips one 👁️👄👁️
I have dual TN. Oh no.
You have what most people have. Still a good system.
The whole video is recorded at an angle, making the IPS look much better than reality, this is clickbait.
You could've just said you didn't watch it. Clickbait for what? I don't make money off of this and I don't have any investment in people buying one over the other, I'm just talking about some stuff I have.
Is there a place that sells this unopen for retailed price this days?
For retail? Not really. They're out of production now.
Wait that was rare? I sold mine for $300
Is there a way to tell besides the obvious?
Not that I know of.
Cool vid ! I picked up a New 3ds xl with a top ips screen I'm lucky haha !
Where can I get a clear protector for the shell? Also, how is the fitment?
I think I just searched "new 3DS clear protector" on Amazon and it was something like 12 bucks, if I remember right. It fits just fine, it simply pops over the shell and has a few plastic hooks around the front side, while the back has some that mold up around the rear end of the console. Comes on and off easily, but it is quite cheap -- I haven't dropped it (yet) so I can't rate it for shocks. It does have kind of an ugly rainbow distortion to it in the right light but it's not really there to look pretty. There are official Nintendo ones but they're expensive.
@@ikewagner alright. Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely look into it.
Is there anyway to tell with a model number?
Not from model numbers, but the individual ID numbers (the barcode on the back) may indicate something. It's hard to tell without a bunch to compare
@@useruseruseruser424 I'm not sure if there's a way to tell from the code or not. Can you see the screens in the pictures?
@@ikewagner Upon messaging him and asking for more pictures (the screens were faded) the guy said that he 'accidentally' listed them as IPS screens when they were not.
I have my eye on a new listing which has much better picture proof of the IPS Screens
Thank you for your reply :)
Neat.
Kinda not awesome that there is no way to know which system has dual ips screens. I want one with dual ips. If anyone wants to sell me one, send me a message, I'll pay a fair price.
I've got one but I don't want to sell it lol
@@bristlesthistlesthen why comment? Like what’s the point of that?😂 to rub it in? Lmao what are you 10?

Love my dual IPS fire emblem console. tried a TN once, it was terrible
The TN still looks quite good, it just isn't as good as the IPS.
Omggg day and night difference.. wtf?
Are you american?
Yes. I can't confirm anything about Japanese or European systems.
8 years too late...
Ok
dont think its irrelevant atm. i just exchanged my switch lite for new 3ds xl a month ago , 8/2022.
its TN but i did know about TN/IPS before buying. but since it was the only cheap one i found when i was lookin i didnt give it much thouts. its usable tbh.
So even the BOTTOM screen is IPS in the right black 3ds??
Also I just bought a black new 3ds xl in amazing pristine condition for 120euro , but the colors look washed up, do you think is a good idea to buy both IPS screens separately and install them on my 3ds?? Also, I feel my old DSi has screens with way better vivid colors so perhaps it had IPS and now it feels like a downgrade
No, the bottom of the black one is TN.
And as for installing them yourself, if you feel confident doing it it's not a bad idea. They look great.
@@ikewagner I am quite good at repairing them . I already repaired the screen and motherboard of a dying old 3ds. The fact is I don't know a reputable source to buy the IPS screens from 😭 i found one some time ago but forgot it 😭😭
