This is more of a review than a retrospective, so I'm not gonna do a formal Top 10, gonna move onto Spooky Season next.
Season 33 is being added to Disney+ today, so I wanted to circle back and review it. There were a lot of different RUclips videos made about Season 33, with some effusive with praise for it (and specific episodes in particular), with other videos saying it's the same old Modern Simpsons crap. So I wanted to weigh in and give my recommendations on whether this was a year worth checking out.
(I also did a whole bunch of Twitter Spaces chats last year, so I figured, may as well finally put all those Season 33 thoughts to good use.) 😆
so excited! halloween is my fav time of yr. love ur videos!!!
the next halloween special is going to be a death note parody and based in the promos they are gonna embrace the anime aestetic, not just a "haha they look like anime characters" like in the end of the crossover with the tracey ulman characters, they change the entire look and character desing to fitt that world kinda liek they did with the coraline parody. Hell lisa looks like an attack on titans character, and bart looks friggin cool as a god of death (or shinigami if you are a fanboy)
So are you ever gonna be doing a season 15 retrospective or what?
@@lanceuppercut_ Definitely still doing a Season 15 video, just got really busy during August and September and couldn't commit to a big rewatch. Should be coming out in November after Halloween stuff
Ooh, Spooky Season! What does that entail? Another Showdown between TOH episodes, like XIV vs XX, since you included those in your respective Hidden Gems videos from those respective eras?
The Longest Marge gave us more rumpus room content, so it's not all bad.
Ach Don't Call It That
I thought I was the only one that called it that. I mean, that’s what it’s called right?
Literally what does that even mean
@@deaddegenerategeneration7441
It's the mysterious room they have but never show off.
@@deaddegenerategeneration7441 The Simpsons' rarely seen-but-totally-exists-most-of-the-time rumpus room.
I think it's because Matt Selman is now Co Showrunner.
I think the Simpsons still has a place in today's world, it's just that there needs to be a fresh pair of hands driving the car.
How did he bring back the monster in Frankenstein? thats what they need and before you answer read the book or audiobook an listen
Selman is solo running about 18 episodes a season, Al Jean just does 4, he's not showrunning with Selman on his episodes it's just Selman and a few choice writers showrunning at this point, that and the amount of new writers that joined the staff in the last 3 years.
I dont know how Selman can fix messes such as silencing Apu and the unnecessary recasting of side characters. Could he possibly demand fewer pop culture references and more story focus?
@@Thomasmemoryscentral they're figuring out a storyline for Apu in the new season actually, as for the pop culture stuff they'll probably continue that but a lot of the recent episodes have been more story focused, just watch Pixelated and Afraid or Girls in the Band.
Just like Doctor Who.
I feel like the show should be more accepting of its current continuity. For example, don't make Homer and Chalmers a one-time thing, if we see the two characters at school, have them interact as friends.
They did greet each other as friends in the 34th season premiere.
I hope Lisa gets to keep her new friend unlike Allison who just kind of vanished out of thin air after her debut, i know that she is chalmer's daughter but Lisa could use some actual friends.
Continuity is Dangerous. One Mistake can ruin the Show. As the Simpsons stick to the stricktly Episodic Format, they can only have bad Episodes, but not Jump the Shark.
@@Ribulose15diphosphat I think we're long past that hurdle my dude
Im somewhat biased on this season because my cousin wrote "lisa's belly" and it is a lot of actual memories that we had as kids that age. Her outburst in the store was something that my cousin would do and i had the chance to witness a few times.
That's cool!
Oh wow. Small world!
@@TheMagicalMudkip2 you're right man that story is faker than your mom's love for you
@@TheMagicalMudkip2 the writer is Juliet Kaufman, and this guy is Tommy Kaufman so I think it’s legit.
My uncle at Nintendo checked, he says your cousin didn't write that episode
I love the episode Bart's In Jail. The ending where Grampa performs such a small, yet meaningful act, without anyone ever knowing except him, was so sweet. It really felt like a true Simpsons episode.
Similar to Grandpa rescuing Bart from Burns over his Army treasure?
Yeah, wish he talked about that more.
Season 33 is the single best season in years, they finally pulled off making a borderline classic season 10 level season, so glad!
The Simpsons was already crap by season 10.
how
@@PeterParker-ff7ub you're a menace
@@221b not complete crap, but it was starting to go downhill. 3 through 9 was the peak.
@@221b There were good episodes in season 10 you dumpling
Funnily enough, back in S32 a lot of the classic VA's of my region's Latin Spanish dub surprisingly came back to The Simpsons after 15 years of a massive recast back in S16 so it was a really good incentive for many viewers to pick the series back up after so long. Who would've thought that it also coincided with a very welcome and appreciated return to form of the show itself. We ended up winning double here, great stuff overall. No matter how long it takes, it'd be for the best if the show ends in at least a bit of a high note, and S33 has definitely been a correct step moving forward
Having Humberto Vélez back is just amazing.
@@Skenel Humberto Vélez >>>> Dan Castellaneta

Lisa have a more permanent and present friendship is so refreshing to see after so long! It makes perfect sense that Lisa would befriend an older kid I really hope they keep this dynamic up in the coming seasons I really want to see how they grow from each other!
I also really hope that the character driven stories and tying up of other loose ends continues as well I'm holding out hope for Patty and Selma to get their happy beginnings!
@@MsSetsuka Didnt Patty get married pre season 20?
@@Thomasmemoryscentral I remember the episode where she was supposed to get married but it ended up not happening. Though that entire episode has aged a bit poorly imo
I miss the old Lisa 😞
Something that I do feel like is worth mentioning is that Dan Castellaneta (Homer’s Voice Actor, among many, many other characters) is also Co-Executive Producer for a lot of the episodes, where as previously he was only a Consulting Producer. In the past, he supposedly sent some scripts back refusing to do them because of how Homer was portrayed. And in your Jerkass Homer video, you mentioned a “Niceass” Homer in the more recent seasons and I like to think that he’s partly responsible for it, seeing as he became consulting producer during the latter half of the show’s run; just making sure that the most lovable and iconic character of the show remains as stupid and impulsive and lovable as he always was
I have to say, I appreciate this channel for not dismissing the new seasons of the Simpsons just because they are new. So many times online, fans immediately dismiss any episodes of the new seasons and haven't given the show a chance in years and are assuming the quality is still poor.
It's really refreshing to see some positivity around the recent seasons because there are many of us who are enjoying it and glad this is a safe space to appreciate and constructively criticize without bandwagons!
How exactly is it better
@@PeterParker-ff7ub Watch the video?
I mean it can only go uphill after the Gaga episode
Every few years I watch some Simpsons to see if the current season is any different from the previous garbage. And every single time I am infuriated by how bad it is. If Classic simpsons is a 10, modern Simpsons isn't even on the scale. They are all below zero, it's only a matter of how much below zero they are.
@@RossMcCarthy1990 So this video didn't do much for you?
I'd argue seasons 30 to 33 have all been getting better as each one goes by. Maybe I'm just optimistic. But I'm enjoying all the different relationships the writers are trying out. A Serious Flanders is better than Warring Priests two parter was. The new crop of writers are bringing back bold choices.
This is exactly how I feel. I noticed it was better a few seasons ago and I borderline forced my SO to watch all of 33 with me in one sitting and they agreed it's way better than it used to be. It's more self contained loveable episodes and less pop culture ish.
Yes! So much this!!! I honestly think The Simpsons has been great since Season 31. I wasn't too fond of 30 😅 but I've thought this praise should have started way back in 31, not just 33 because it's the most recent.
Flanders should be full christianity okay, but still a decent human, not a caricatural hard line hateful christian. To see him having regrets or doubt between what is good for someone else or his own morality in season 33 was great. it makes these characters more human, interesting and still living in an over-the-top world.
I think by far the biggest reason this season doesnt just feel different but better is that they actually let the characters care about each other. They spend time together, build dynamic relationships, and actually enjoy each other's company. Previously a lot of the show felt very very bitter about the way characters interacted, everyone seemed to hate everyone else
Learning that Maia came back even as a less developed character, learning she came back legit made me happy. I always thought Moe screwing things up was a terrible copout, and the thought that the writers might be interested in more with them is great
I love how much the show uses Chalmers these days, he adds such a funny down to earth detachment that other characters in Springfield don’t have
Even though Skinner and Chalmers is my favourite character duo in the series, I'm very happy that we're finally getting some of Chalmers on his own, allowing him to be his own character not dependent on a single dynamic.
It is interesting when you compare him to Frank Grimes. Both characters primarily live or lived outside of Springfield. As Chalmers is the Superintendent of more than just Springfield. Yet he has grown to allow the craziness to not get the better of him. Meanwhile Frank was the opposite. He was unwilling to go with the flow. He became bitter towards Homer. The personification of Springfields insanity. And it got him killed.
it's amazing it took 33 years for Chalmers and Homer to have some actual interactions with eachother.
@@AquaAtia better late than never
I will admit a concern i have with moe and Maya is that is what if goes down the same route skinner and Edna had
i hope it doesn't cause i think moe deserves a permanent status quo change and considering how they always end up ditching his old love interests i think him and maya should stick around together
@@cheribitch5396 Moe became close to finding love in that one episode he'd pretend to be fancy and accidentally ended up burning his bar down but do the beer seasons cut down on him hitting on Marge?
I loved Season 33! It gave us a little bit of everything. Character developments, relatable moments, emotional scenes (Lisa's Belly at least), experimental episodes, clever satire, witty jabs towards pop culture, classic character moments, and even a Bill Cipher cameo. What more could I possibly ask for!
Is it funny? I haven't seen it to I couldn't say. But I find that most good new episodes are good because of the storyline, not that the jokes are actually good
There's at least a good joke here and there. For example, "Bart's In Jail!" has a great Moe one liner near the end: "You mean that person I met in a boating chatroom wasn't the REAL Hillary Duff?!" It's definitely more character driven good than haha good though.
@@MrSamBerrett1 There's no one correct answer for that question. It all comes down to your opinion at the end of the day.
@@MrSamBerrett1 On the other hand, I’ve seen fans say that the newer episodes are sometimes funny, but that they’re lacking in terms of storytelling and emotion. I don’t think there’s a consensus on what’s wrong with modern Simpsons lol.
for it to be funny?
I really enjoy the way they experiment in season 33. It feels a lot more fresh then the older seasons, something I think this otherwise lacking show (I mean in the later seasons) deserved. Much like the experimental season 8, I think it's giving the show a push in the right direction. Though probably a lot different then season 8, the similarity that they are trying new things shines brightest.
I think experimentation is what the show absolutely needed for a long time.
They're just doing what Family Guy has been doing for the past 5-ish years in the experimentation department, I'm surprised it wasn't brought up.
Poorhouse Rock is a very radical episode, no one else is overtly encouraging the actual teardown of civilization in modern media. It was a wonderful and affirming shock to hear Hugh Jackman essentially tell Bart to burn it down. Great episode.
Season 33 is a breath of fresh air takes you back to the Golden Age of the Simpsons, seasons 1 through 10. But season 8 remains my favorite.
that sounds like impossibly high praise. i’ll give it a chance. but idk. consider me skeptical
what was the good episode(s) and why were they good?
@@timgersh6787 i also would like to ask these same questions to mister steel rain.
I love how season 33 is more experimental and more focused on character studies than full on lol moments. To me, season 33 is the best The Simpsons has been since at least season 10.
As someone who hasn’t watched a new Simpsons episode in about a decade, you’ve sold me on giving this season a chance. I’ll probably start with “A Serious Flanders”, since it is something entirely separate. Thanks, as always, for your work.
Seasons 4-15 have always been my favorite, I haven't really cared for any of the seasons after that, but I'm happy to hear things are changing! Definitly going to check it out :)
16 is good too though.
I'm happy to hear that the Simpsons is doing better, but more in the way I'd be happy to hear my ex is doing well, years later when I've gotten over her. I agree that for fans who are burnt out, this won't bring it all back. But I'm happy to hear that creativity and passion and just "trying" can happen in our modern world. I will always be happy to hear that.
Basically, Classic Simpsons and Modern Simpsons are two separate shows, and they shouldn't really be compared.
Pretty much agree.
Eh. Its the same show. Just very long. Ofc its different but so is season one from season 8. And season 33 is a different as that compared to season 22
It's always a good day with TheReallJims uploads
I loved Season 33! (And I'm loving 34 so far). It feels genuinely emotional again and the stories are very character focused. It's stories have warmth to them with that sentimentality of the first few seasons.
Very good review here. You did a wonderful job explaining what you saw as a weakness and what you saw as a strength. I think I will definitely give this season a look-see. Great job on this video. I’m glad Shana’s back too. I hope that they will also revisit her dynamic with Bart at some point. It would be fantastic in my mind if Lisa helped them get back together or something like that.
Simpsons getting good again?! That's Umpossible!
To me, Season 33 is less a "renaissance" of the series and more a "modernization," which I mean in the most complimentary way possible. This is one of the first HD seasons to actually feel organic to the era it exists in, like this is a family and world that could conceivably exist in 2022. Don't get me wrong, Seasons 20-30 do have some good episodes, but the characters were so stagnant and the episode topics were so trendy that it felt less like a modern day family satirizing modern day topics and more like characters from the 90s' awkwardly wading through pop culture from the 2010s'. Season 33, on the other hand, really seems to have its finger on the pulse of the world today, and how that can be channeled into Simpsons characters as we've known them in the past.
We have Boyz in the Highlandz, which recontextualizes Martin's nerdiness and loneliness into a result of aggressive schooling and overbearing parenting, instead of it just being the butt of a joke. We have Portrait of a Lackey on Fire, which recontextualizes Smithers' relationship issues into him being a sympathetic, older gay man who happens to have a type, rather than defining him on his depressing unrequited crush. We have Bart the Cool Kid, which recontextualizes Bart's extremely 90s' character archetype into a story about him desperately trying to hop onto trends and be cool to separate himself from his father. We have the Wayz We Were, You Won't Believe What This Episode Is About, and Meat Is Murder, all pretty uneven episodes that still use Moe, Homer, and Lisa's established characterizations to make some forward-thinking statements for the show. The season finale, Poorhouse Rock, outright confronts the ever-popular criticism of the Simpsons' lifestyle no longer being attainable and says... "yeah, we agree. Here's why." You get the vibes that the writer's room isn't just plugging in their ears and not listening to criticism anymore. They actually have something to say and want to use these specific characters to say it.
I completely agree that the season is far from perfect, hence why I wouldn't use the "renaissance" label either. That inherently draws comparisons to the classic years that Season 33 just isn't going to win. But as far as the show's overall quality, this is the first season in a long time to actually have more hits than misses, and it genuinely makes me excited for the future of the IP. If you're completely burnt out on modern Simpsons, this season probably won't win you over, but if you love the characters and are open to some uneven, but interesting explorations of them in the modern day, I definitely recommend checking it out.
Very well said!
"We have Boyz in the Highlandz, which recontextualizes Martin's nerdiness and loneliness into a result of aggressive schooling and overbearing parenting, instead of it just being the butt of a joke."
To what extent is that modern? To my mind, it seemed a bit reminiscent of something that John Hughes might have offered in the mid 1980s. Although I think it was a "good episode", it's because of the quality of the overall execution, not the tiresome direction that they took.
In a sense, I think that crystalizes how I see s33: that they're becoming adept at presenting a bunch of tired ideas in a way that makes their tedium less apparent. They might be no longer "awkwardly wading" through the 21st century but are they offering something worthwhile? It might not hurt to watch like some of the rump of the show but I think it's sound of a show that has nothing to say.
I thought Poorhouse Rock was a great way to wrap up the show once and for all but then season 34 came along... yuckeroo: season 34 is sound of Poochie crying to be put to sleep.
So, I can understand why s33 got a few people excited (although tbh I'd not heard any hype about s33 until I saw this video), but I can't fathom how one can maintain that excitement in the face of s34
Wow A current season review!! I have been telling all my friends who only like "old Simpsons " how good this season was. This is awesome
great video! i'm hoping for some scary halloween themed videos soon! always my favorite
I think it could be argued that this experimentation could have started in season 32. We got more info on Ms. Hoover and I think two episodes centering on Comic Book Guy and we also got a whole episode dealing with Skinner and Chaulmers's dynamic. I personally am really loving the explorative direction the writers are moving towards. It feels like they may have felt gotten too comfortable with fleshing out a select few characters and now they're branching out. I'm all for it. Season 32 and 33 have been incredibly refreshing and I've thoroughly enjoyed them both. They are definitely near the top of my ranking for modern Simpsons seasons. Also that Hallmark parody in season 32 is one of the best things to come out of the Simpsons in a long time. They nailed it right down to the music in the background.

Eagerly awaiting your Bottom 50 All Time video
I was honestly surprised with how I liked Season 33, it had some of the best episodes I had seen in a very long time
Great video. I haven't watched a new Simpsons episode in probably over a decade at this point, but you're really getting me there! I won't be starting with the musical episodes though.
Cool to see there are things to enjoy in the show again, and that people are responding positively. I'll have to check it out sometime.
I've been watching S33 on and off but you're getting me excited to check out the episodes I haven't seen - even the bad ones. I have mixed feelings overall but I think the more experimental/gimmicky episodes are a breath of fresh air.
I’m actually happy to hear that they brought Maya back.
I haven't really watched new simpsons episodes in some years, but a couple of weeks ago I found my mom watching 'A Serious Flanders' and stayed with her to watch the episode and it honestly amazed me, it was such a good watch. After that, I watched some episodes from S33 by myself and they were a mixed bag in my opinion. Overall, I would still recommend to watch.
Pixelated and afraid, a serious Flanders and that disturbingly relevant song that capped off the season finale. Definitely a step in the right direction for modern Simpsons.
I’m so glad to see someone else agreeing with me, I think this was a good sign of the future of the show and people think I’m crazy when I say it
This season of the show found what has been missing from the series for so long -- its heart
We are reminded again why we love these characters - because they show us why they love each other
my personal opinion is to actually start making those 'short films abotu springfield' into actual series. they have enough characters, then have an experienced enough staff.. .and, maaayyybe we can let the family lie low in the background for a little while. there's only so many times we can see homer and marge nearly divorce.
I’d watch a Wiggum PI subseries
"The Simpsons but experimental" is basically how the internet reinvented the Simpsons, so I'm very glad they're finally tapping more into that potential. Just hope it's not too little too late
Hope this channel makes all the way through to s33 with the retrospectives as this could be a fun compare and contrast to come back to. Obviously dependent on RealJims being up for putting out that much content as that's likely talking a decade plus as a minimum :D
Great video Jim! I loved season 33. It was definitely the best overall in awhile!
I watch this channel, so I know what's been going on with the Simpsons after season 11 - to see what I'm "missing". A review like this is therfore perfect!
As a life long Simpsons fan, I agree that the show is hopefully back in an upswing. Season 33 was great--good laughs and great heart. I also felt like this was the season that truly felt as relatable as the seasons in the late 80's and 90's did. Its use of technology seemed natural and its references not hamfisted.
Idk what drew me to starting to watch the current seasons alongside my series wide finally happening binge but it started for me here (that is aside from the ever presence this show has through ones life) and i have to say 34 is looking even better. I cant believe how it feels to watch. Very good n fun.
I do think this series is becoming more experimental and unique because they're now a part of Disney Plus. They don't have to reset to the status quo or only feature major characters in the spotlight because there's no chance of isolating viewers with a streaming service. If you watch The Simpsons online, you have made a specific choice to watch that show and that episode, so it's almost impossible for you to not know who Cletus is, thus, the creators can experiment with his backstory.
Also, this experimental energy gives me Community vibes and I salute them for trying that out. Switch up the medium, get weird, parody things, make two people get married, make others break-up, kill some off- people won't get out of the loop anymore if they make big changes, so just go all out
I really truly did not expect to enjoy season 33 as much as I did. Sure, it’s not Golden Age quality, but I would go as far to say that it is the best season since the 10th.
I was also rather pleased with the first two episodes of 34 as well.
Episode 16 has to be one of my favorite simpsons episodes for me. I’m a huge fan of the show and have been profoundly deaf my entire life. The episode was very emotional for me
Some definite classics this year. Lisa's Belly was heartfelt like old Simpsons.
I don't mind this season and what stands out at times for me is the music they use in various episodes. For example: in Lisa's Belly they used I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister, which is not exactly Slipknot, but it's fine. Everything else is okay the way it is. I had mentioned the Twisted Sister connection in my blog Simpsons On Sundays in a post called Twisted Simpsons, which also happened to be posted on halloween. Anyway, great review of Season 33.
I totally agree with you. Good job on the analysis.
This season had a Treehouse of Horror segment centered around Tik Tok. That should answer your question.
As a huge fan, who got put off by the HD era, I was so pleasantly surprised. As you quite rightly said, it isn't the best thing in the world, but I love that the episodes are charming. I'm enjoying the character dynamics and the focus on these little stories. In fact, I am actually quite glad they don't do satire after satire. EVERY SHOW is doing satire of some kind, and very rarely do they do anything good with it (even South Park - the king of animated satire - is becoming old hat). Forget all that. Let's go back to little character moments. I also love that there are a few episodes without whackadoodle B subplots. One story is fine. Pixellated and Afraid is just gorgeous. I love A Serious Flanders as well. More of this please, Simpsons.
The Simpsons Season 33 season was pretty good in my opinion
Had some clever jokes and parodies
Simpsons ain't dead
I watched Pixelated and Afraid after your video convinced me to check it out. It's genuinely great, and I think it's definitely one of the best episodes in the whole series.
Simpsons S33 could be similar to Thomas and Friends S17. Both were the start of Renaissance periods for those shows
Pixelated and Afraid is one of the best episodes in a very long time. When it comes to episodes with more serious plots like The Color Yellow and The Saga of Carl, I like them, but Pixelated and Afraid manages to be much funnier than both 2 while still being beautiful
And they kept the episode focused on Homer and Marge, unlike Saga of Carl which was more about the bar flies
i think the show has actually been getting better since season 29. There you had episodes like "Gone Boy", "Homer Is Where the Art Isn't", and "King Leer".
since season 28
You convinced me to watch this season if I get the time
A complete history of Shelbyville please
Other than clips included in your videos the most recent Simpsons I've watched was the movie, but you have me intrigued; I might have to check it out.
Tbh i never hated modern simpsons like most people, but i admitted it lost its charm like earlier seasons. But I was surprised already by season 32, which I binged for how nice it was. And i am still waiting for season 33 to air in my country, but I already saw some and I thought "yes they are back"
Same
As someone who's actually only gotten into watching the Simpsons 3 years ago, I really like season 33. I'm still quite young, I never watched the show growing up as kinda implied- but I really REALLY like the later part of the season.
I am a sucker for character development, even in a show like the Simpsons. I care a lot about these characters and I want to see them interact, and then get into conflict or get closer. The Boyz N the Highlands, A Serious Flanders, Pixelated an Afraid, have to be some of my favourite episodes this season, just DUE to those moments of character, especially between Martin and Bart.
I want to see them follow up on Martin and Bart, I want more of that dynamic, where we get to see how stressful Martins homelife can be, and Bart knowing the full story to try and help him loosen up, like back in Bart Gets An F. I want more stories of Flanders and Homer actually getting along (more on Homers side), and I want more sweet stories showing how Marge and Homer, despite their short comings as a couple, can support each other.
I don't know- maybe what I want from the Simpsons is a dream, seeing as the Simpsons has a status quo; the show must go on. But I want more solid continuity changes, I want some character dynamics, friendships, ETC set in place. I think if the writers take a step to make the Simpsons not only a funny show but, a show with heart, a show where characters can genuinely develop and things stay more often, I think it would do it some good, change it up some more.
havent watched this season but your video sold me on it. gonna give it a shot if i can get passed marges voice.
Has anyone else realized just how big this channel has gotten? It's at 120k subscriptions as of typing and a typical video has surprisingly high average of views.
Not sure what caused the newbie-boom, but congrats!
I didn't expect to live this season as I did. I loved the feeling of fresh air with the experimenting
Oh HELL YEAH season 33 probs the most consistently good season since season 9 and I stand by that !!!
What does it say about the show that I am genuinely not sure if season 33 is like the newest season or a 10 year old season? lol
Season 34 is currently airing episodes, Season 33 will be coming to Disney+ soon.
I hope that the Simpsons slowly get better and maybe try something new. More continuity over the seasons like South Park, more serious everyday problems or life-wise episodes as Bojack Horseman sometimes did. The Simpsons should be more than just comedy and start to show again a reactic family and characters with serious problems despite funny moments. That would put The Simpsons back in a better light for everyone. To be more than just a comedy series. Especially in today's times.
I liked the Seth Green cameo, but maybe I'm just biased because I'm a huge Robot Chicken fan.
Same
I honestly loved this season, they went somewhere new in so many ways and it's quite refreshing.
Pixelated and afraid is hands down the best Homer and Marge story in the entire run of the series. Period.
After that there is just “good” stuff. The rest of the season isn’t great but it’s good. I think people think it is a renaissance because unlike modern seasons it’s not offensively bad, it’s a season that won’t piss you off, it’s not classic season good (but seriously what is)
People have been whispering that the Simpsons is good again for about 15 years.
Part of me is curious to see what would happen if they wrote a modern Simpsons story but animated it in the style of season 5 and eschewed all references to 2022 culture.I know we''ll never get to see that but I'd be interested to see how it would be received. I think that old animation style contributes to a lot of the nostalgia that people have for early Simpsons, plus most people are just totally sick and tired and bored of the current pop culture and social issues right now. I'd love to see them do a one off episode with the current writing team that takes place in 1994 with the old animation style and see what happens.
That would be such an interesting experiment.
That can't be done. Cel animation just doesn't exist anymore, and the show looked how it looked because of the material they used. It always looked slightly off model because it was not as easibly fixeable as it is now, but that was what gave it soul. We can never get that back, but we sure can get something better than what we have now.
can't happen, it was a different time and it's never coming back
ill go a little further and say its not a nostalgia factor, but joke pacing, that the old animation helped. you dont quite get memorable visual slapstick gags like homer getting a chip and a puppy quickly snatching it up.
@@antonco2 Are you sure cel animation cant make a comeback? If we got editing software that can fake the vhs appearance, bot sure why cel animation cant comeback?

There was a movie way back in the early 90's that was literally about a killer tree that infected people with an ancient celtic spirit which made them sacrifice children too it.
I agree, it's one of the most refreshing season. I enjoyed every episode.
So what your saying is... season 33 is like the Simpson's Andor? No, it's not the classics, but it's still very fresh, character driven, and overall pretty dang enjoyable! ...Looking forward to see what you say about 33 when your retrospective videos catch up to it! 😜
BTW would you ever consider doing a video on the best "new" character to the series? As in, best recurring characters to be added over the last 20 years? Maybe I'm the minority here, but I find these later seasons so intriguing... Like Krusty's kid has been on the series longer than Maude at this point! 😳
A top 10 best modern simpsons characters video would be awesome
In the first episode of this season The Star of the Backstage, Marge explains to Lisa what Y2K was. That really threw me off.
I loved the crap out of this season, thanks for the refresher!
Edit: I didn't realize this season was the one Bill Cipher cameo'd in. I legit think Bill should be a recurring cameo character, and Alex Hirsch should voice him every time!
Original comment:
I saw this video a year ago and thought "wait, is the Simpsons good again"? Now I realize that's the wrong question to ask. The Simpsons has always had its ups and downs, but it seems there's something different about the show now compared to how modern Simspsons usually is. Admittedly, I only saw the episode where Bart gets a new teacher, and even then it was by complete chance, but despite that, my first impression of the episode was that it... actually had something of an emotional core, something I felt was gone from the series since the golden age of the series. Another thing that intrigued me was that the episode felt confident about the story it was telling to not feel the need to insert joke-after-joke in every scene. I feel like lot of modern Simpsons is a bit too anxious about itself, like because it's primarily a comedic show it needs to make sure to have enough jokes in there, and I always felt the need to be funny came at the expense of giving the series and its characters the emotional depth it used to have. But if the episode I saw was any indication, perhaps they've finally gotten back in touch with that side of itself, and that has me really excited for new episodes going forward, if they're going to continue what season 33 started.
I think I'll have to check out "The Essentials" list of episodes in the description. Season 32 had some episodes I thought were pretty good and then several episodes I absolutely hated. Some of it was just unnecessary retcons that felt like they don't fit the characters at all, but anyway, if they improved on the bad parts, I can enjoy it with tempered expectations.
What I liked is they didn't dump all their good ideas into just their format-bending episodes like the Lego episode they did. They actually spread them out and focused more on the characters in the process. Always a good choice. Is it classic Simpsons, no. If you take away the comparison and focus on the season in a vacuum, it's a solid season.
The way you mention how season 33 changed things up makes me wonder about all the status quo changes The Simpsons has gone through, for a series that is often derided for adhering to the status quo too much there have still been quite a few status quo shifts
Sooo many episodes really had me going
"Wow they never really done this before? How did it take that long"
8:06 Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this was caused by Disney interfering. I mean the show is like 30 years old obviously it isnt all that sharp and cutting edge now but Disney is definetly gonna try and make the show as appealing as they can to milk more money out of the cash cow.
Disney has an odd talent of making Simpsons feel more corporate than I ever felt it was in the days of commercials for Butterfingers or Chicken and such. Their specials are glorified commercials in the worst way.
I too was noticing an improvement in quality while watching this season.
Has the curse of the albatross know as Al Jean been lifted off the Simpsons writing staff? Only time will tell.
When are you doing this with season 34?
I hope future seasons continue to break the status quo a bit, if they want to stay interesting they need to change some stuff. things can’t stay the same forever
Hearing all these things makes me wanna watch the show again, they’re finally doing something different
Thanks RealJims. Do you have a video about why modern simpsons characters have small overbites and big cheekbones? This really bugs me when watching classic characters interact with modern ones
at this point id love to see a developing world. like they could finally fix the house. and start (very slowly) building on pprevious episodes
I call it the Energy Drink Season.
Somebody gave the writers a couple Monster shots and then...boom!
Seaaon 34 is off to a rough start these past 2 episodes but let's see how it goes. I hope they go for more swings this season.
how was it
@@-throat- Pretty good! The Carl episode was a stand out.
I like the artistry of the new seasons, it looks great
After season 16, I can't watch them it should of ended year's ago, but after watching this I might try season 33 you kinda convince me.
