"There were so many things that had been cut from the film and so many things that had been shot in a different way than they were written. Honestly, the final movie that's out there is not the final movie. There was supposed to be an entire second pass of visual effects, post-production, editing. But New Line said 'You know what? It's testing so well, it doesn't fucking matter. It still gonna be a hit. And by the way, it was."
That's very interesting. The movie definitely required that second pass, more post-production, and better editing. It's a shame, because the trailer is pretty cool. The actual movie was truly awful though.
i remember this trailer got me so pumped for it... i would wait for it to show up so i could record it on vhs and watch it over and over again
I know this movie is horrible as an adult but it did exactly what it was supposed to do for its target audience. My friend and I saw it in the theater when we were 12 and not once did we complain while watching it. It had all the characters in their costumes fighting each other. We got free posters from the theater and talked about it with our other friends at school. We all loved it as kids because that's who it was made for.

I had part 1 on VHS as one of the few movies I owned since I was 6 years old and loved it so much. I am now 21 and learning there's been a part 2. Smh.
there needs to be like a 2016 remake of this, i think a badass mortal kombat could be made with todays effects and quality standards and tech

Can't agree more, MK is living its sweetest moment in years thanks to the great two last games, it is the perfect moment for an awesome MK film reboot with outstanding effects and fights and goooooore ^^
Yeah. Mortal kombat 3 died due to Hurricane Katrina. This movie could hace been better but was ruined due to lack of fights. It had almost everyone. Perhaps remaking it and spliting it into 2 films since 2 and 3 are blend together.

The new trailer for the 2021 was fine but THIS just gets me hyped like no other. Nostalgia set aside, the music, the scenes used, the colors, the characters just works. There's a camp factor that we all love about the MK franchise/movies and the new movie feels like it has subtle hints of it.

I agree. I really dont get the hate for this film. At the time videogame movies were being made...they didnt take the story too too serious, it was all for fun. And even by that means, this film still delivered with the characters and music and atleast a good entertaining story. Sure, they didnt show Kabal or Stryker, and they got the relationship canon wrong with Shinnok l, Shao Kahn and Raiden..but this movie reminded me ALOT like MK MK trilogy...it did its job.

Back in the day, a techno-music freak friend of mine loved the 1997 one over the 1995 one simply because of the music.
This film was as enjoyable as sucking on a bin-man's glove, but remember being so excited to see it for my 15th birthday (it was a '15' certificate in the UK and was 14 at the time, so had to wait). It released in Feb and was already out of cinemas by my birthday in March and didn't know why until like a year later when the VHS came out and I excitedly bought it and very very quickly realised... "oh." Looking back at the trailer now, it's crazy to think I'd ever been excited by it, but back then you had to actually watch advert breaks as they happened, you didn't know if a trailer would be played during them, you didn't have the internet to re-watch them repeatedly and analyse every scene. You were just there, watching, I dunno, the X Files and then during the advert break whilst you were going to get a Capri Sun from the fridge you heard "MORTAAAAAAL KOMBAAAAAAAT" and ran back to see half a trailer for something you couldn't take in during one viewing. It was a more innocent and naive time, that's for sure!

It's clear that more time and dedication was put into the trailer and soundtrack than the actual movie.
I remember loving this movie as a kid. When I watch it now, I couldn't believe how bad it actually was...
It is "THE ROOM" of film adaptations of video games. The original film is arguably the best film adaptation of a video game to this day.
For a movie based on a video game + being a sequel, its not that bad (especially for the 90s). I liked this one cuz its the first time I saw a live action centaur (Motaro, my fave character in MK anyway), way before Harry Potter & Narnia... And I think Motaro here serving as one of the 3 final bosses was really good homage to the video game. Sadly, Motaro is almost completely forgotten now... (and they still didnt return his horse-shaped body back to the games, and its 2021 already)

Say what you want about the movie, the trailer is awesome. I love that song right before the theme starts. I love the fast cuts of the fight scenes. The person who did the trailer did the best with what the had to work with. IMHO.
I love how they portray the seriousness of the situation here. Post-apocalyptic vibes. The action sequence are still better than most CGIs nowadays

This was just pandering to the fans. It's why I'm getting tired of comic book movies.
Let's just accept the fact that the trailer is better than the actual movie.
Just from the look of this trailer the film looks like a made for DVD, or in this case, made for home video release.
The whole movie looks and feels like it's made for home video release.
But I can assure it was not. I saw it in theaters. The soundtrack was great it helped mold my interests in music.

the concept and characters were spot on but what was missing was good acting and better graphics 😔
The funniest thing about this movie is that I have absolutely no memory of seeing any trailers for it back when it was released.
MK1 was hyped to holy heavens, and I definitely remember seeing it. The sequel? I had no idea it existed until almost a decade later when someone told me about it.

The 90s was underrated and so is this movie. Without the 90s, movie production wouldn't skyrocket by now meaning less blockbusters and less Avengers.
So yeah haters! The 90s is a great stepping stone to modern blockbusters. Like TDK trilogy or Avengers.
Yeah this is one of my guilty pleasures. Say what you will about this movie it at least felt like it was representing Mortal Kombat better than most video game movies did in my opinion. Sometimes I felt like I was actually watching footage for the third game. I like the fact that they were able to squish in so many characters that they did despite the fact that wasn't the whole roster but go f****** figure

The movie was actually good for its timeline. Remember back in the 1990s-2000s, the CGI were not that good back then. For example, like the movie Spawn.

Ever since I had first watched the sequel, I had often wondered why Christopher Lambert (Raiden), Linden Ashby (Johnny Cage), Bridgette Wilson (Sonya Blade) and Gregory McKinney (Jax) didn't still resume their roles for the sequel. I didn't think James Remar did too bad as Raiden.

If this movie came out today, it will be an epic fail. But it came out in the 90's. The hype of 2D fighting games era. For a true Mortal Kombat Fan, who cares about the cheesy lines or bad acting and CGI. What matters are the characters in the game on a live action movie.

Back in highschool my friend and I would hang out a lot at my house and we'd always get food delivery and for some reason we'd always put this movie in to watch while we ate. lol, We would always crack up at the part when liu kang goes into that dream state after getting hit in the head. haha
Paul Anderson needed to come back for this one. They should reboot the series or make a part 3.
Don’t get your hopes up, even they could make a reboot or a third film, Anderson would not direct it.

I watched this when I was 7 at the theaters. I remember Sonya and Melina getting really muddy in a fight, then in the next scene, Sonya's white shirt and shorts were brand new
The sound effect in the starting scene of this trailer reminds of the sound used in the nun and conjuring 2
I blame Paul Anderson for it’s bad reputation. Because they asked him to make the second film, but he refused, and look what happened?
And also, when they were talking about it, he blamed himself for not directing it.
And I said to myself “well next time think about how you make your decisions”.
If he would have directed this, we wouldnt of gotten Event Horizon.
Thank God they have finally worked out a deal for another MK movie!!! These movies were my childhood!!!! I really hope they do this new one justice. Rated-R is definitely a start. James Wan being a part of it and I've looked up the martial artist they have picked for Sub-Zero. This has promise. Lets only hope.
Now let's just hope the upcoming movie doesn't suck.
