I had a 76 Super glide....I would take it anyday over the new models now....old shovel heads had millions of parts made for them.....easy as hell to work on...one simple carb etc....mine was blue and rode it from Feb 77 to Aug 88 when I got hit and it was totaled and had 85k miles on it then .....i miss it

I ride a '74 shovel FLH. If you didn't live and ride in the 1970's, you have no idea what Harley was, and meant back then, AMF or not. The world's largest displacement: 1,200 cc V-Twin mill. Kick start (on most). The best, and a simpler time. Today's bikes have no soul. Just a bunch of computer designed super mass produced clones. All at boutique dealerships. Sure, I have a modern bike, too, but nothing beats my old Shovel for soul satisfaction.

I had a 1996 Heritage Classic for a few years. I replaced it last August with something I'd wanted since I was a teenager...a 1980 FXEF. 80ci, kickstart Shovelhead that I'm going to keep for the rest of my riding years. The Heritage was a great bike, but the Shovel has soul.

I have a 1954 FL it has since 1986 I also have a 1978 FLH the last new bike I bought was a 2012 flhtci my main bike is my 78 FLH there's no other feeling like it it's true Harley-Davidson

I actually bought two 1980 Harleys. In the fall of 1979 I bought a red 80’ Sportster. Then all winter I thought better of my choice, so in April of 1980 I traded it for a Super Glide. I knew I had married the right girl after that! Still have a Harley and still have my girl.
The Sportster and Superglide look cool.
I like the theme music...no nasty rap crap back then.
Amazing how far all the other bikes have come and the touring bike still resembles the bikes we ride today.
That is one reason why I love my Road King. They kept a lot of that classic look.

In 1973 when this was filmed the Italian Aermacchi factory was 100% owned by AMF Harley-Davidson, so yes they were built in Italy, but they were still Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
This is from 1973, not 1980. It was shot in the Milwaukee, WI and Elkhart Lake, WI areas.

Yes you're right Steve, AMF Harley-Davidson closed they're Italian lightweight motorcycle facility in Varese in 1978, the Aermacchi factory and existing stock was sold to Cagiva. The warranty claims on the Italian 2-stroke singles cost AMF H-D a fortune.
Yes, 1973. I bought one new of the 125cc AMF/Aermacchi for a couple hundred dollars from a Harley dealer who had a warehouse full of them he couldn't sell and was almost giving them away to get rid of them. He said AMF made him buy the small bikes in order to keep his dealership. I was out of the Army and back in college and my 500cc Triumph was dead (again) and I needed cheap transportation. It was good for what it was and I sold it a year or so later for what I paid for it. I put a lot of miles on the 125cc and had no problems with it.
The 250/350cc Sprint 4strokes single horizontal cylinder were great bikes that owned the top spots in a lot of races.
H-D is offering the AMF paint scheme on a current 2018 model, I noticed,

At the time this was filmed in 1973 AMF Harley Davidson owned 100% of the company that built the small motorcycles.

My first bike was a 1972 Honda CL100, but I remember all of these bikes very well. This was back when you could buy street legal bikes out of the Sears and Montgomery Wards catalogs. Everybody was riding. Maybe Harley wouldn’t be in such a mess if they had kept on seeking small bikes to bring riders into the fold. I miss the 70s!
Harley's is a mess because the baby boomers are aging out, and the younger generation can't afford over priced road bikes.

I ride amf harleys my whole life. and still do . I'm 44 years old. started on a 1976 sportster and ride a stock 1976 flh. I have been riding for 25 years. oh and I wrench on my own bikes. not some yuppy with a huge pocket book. and the reason there is a black oil spot on the tar is because. those bikes have auto chain oilers on them and you adjust the oiler with the screw and jam nut on oilpump. the bikes in this video are 1973. there is nothing like a shovel
That and their tolerances were shit from 71ish to about 1980 because they were all made on worn out equipment. AMF retooled Harleys Milwaukee factory and built them a new one in Pennsylvania, spending MILLIONS. They also had a total loss oil system until the Knuckle engine. That's where the "Harleys mark their spot" crap came from. They may have leaked oil, yeah, but they are just as reliable as any bike out there. How many Hondas have lasted 40-50 plus years and are still around? I own a 1981 FXS, and have owned several AMF made bikes. These clowns don't have a clue what they're talking about.

The 45" Flathead was the first one with a recirculating oil system, not the Knucklehead.
And the automatic rear chain oilers, like the one on your Low Rider leave a "mark your spot" oil spot to, especially if they're adjusted out too far, unless I was going on the road for a trip I just ran the adjustment screw all the way in on mine and oiled the chain by hand.

Yep, AMF saved Harley Davidson and all anyone ever did was run their mouths on them, they built them the new production facility in York Pa and upgraded the Milwaukee plant, but most importantly they got them into bed with Porsche.
In 1976 Porsche started working on a new engine for them called the Nova, it was cancelled in 1979 by a new CEO at AMF but it had developed a relationship between Harley and Porsche, contrary to what Harley likes to lead people to believe it's actually Porsche who's done most of the engineering work on all the post Shovel engines, with Branch Flowmetrics finalizing the ports and combustion chambers.
Even the Softail frame was something that was overseen during the AMF years.

But for some reason, most manufacturers (of anything) have it in mind that they need to be "young and hip"... But since "fashion" and current tastes seem to change every 15 minutes these days, I'm pretty certain that they're all shooting themselves in the figurative foot.
If you dig it, you KNOW that "the Classics" never go out of style... And that goes for just about everything.

Without AMF...Harleys would have faded into history!!!! AND started the Nova Project which is the EVO motor. You better learn your Harle y history
The Nova project , was water cooled V-4's , and V-6' that H-D still holds patents on , they were going to compete with Honda's V-4's , such as the V-45 Magna , and V-65 Magna , however the project was put on hold , as tax was increased on metric machines over 750 cc's to slow the import of bigger bikes . There are Nova project bikes in museums , and private collections . The Evolution came along in 1984 , after the re purchase of H-D from AMF , and was their saving grace powerplant . New models , and belt drive , along with Willie G's influence helped to make the brand very strong , once again becoming the most sought after motorcycles in the world .

Judging by the tank graphics on the FX1200, FLH and Sportster (as well as film content and presentation), I'd say this video is from about 1971.
Warren Johnson, no "striper" bikes were made until 1973. They ran through 1976. 1971 FLH and Super Glide, have a tank badge. That badge goes back to 1967 or 68.

The first fx1200 1971 had a front mechanical drum brake. The one in the intro has a disk . 1972 was the first year for single disk brake

this is 1973 promotional. All the small motorcycles were built in there Italian plant. I have two from that plant. A 63 M50 + a 64 M50S the two smallest Harley Davidson ever built!

This video is actually from 1973 not 1980. The AMF years are actually from 1969 through 1981.
I owned a 1973 FX 1200 (Superglide) which I bought in 1973 with 900 miles on it. It was 74 cubic inches, 4 speed tranny, same as the FLH 1200. My FX had a Sportster front end (made in Japan). Now I ride a 117 cu. in., 6 speed tranny 2018 CVO Limited SE 115 Anniversary.

Harley sold off the factory that made them in 78, AMF didn't plan a replacement and the independent MOCO had everything they could do to keep it going in the 80s and by the time they had their footing they were selling an image and expensive bikes so they stuck with that

I have no desire for any of the new Harleys except maybe the later Sportsters. As for me, I love my 2003 100 Anniversary Ultra Classic. It still has the front fender bumper and rails, and real gauges! The bikes we're looking at here in this video are simple, traditional machines. That to me is what makes motorcycling so enjoyable. I don't want to get tied into clicking through menus and sub-menus in order to find my oil pressure or whatever.
And to those that think even my 2003 is beyond traditional, I agree. They'll be a point where I can't keep it original. You can buy a long block for it but when that computer goes, or the throttle body, it will be difficult to source. Harley is very clear in their message that they want you to get rid of your older bike and get a new one. Even the dealers won't touch a bike over 10 years old because H-D won't support them with parts.
But the bikes in this video will be able to be rebuilt for a hundred years or more. Well, anything 1200cc and up anyway. There are plenty who know how to fix them and rebuild parts are available.
These were great times for motorcycling. Simple and affordable. Notice how they were sure to use helmets? I was surprised at that.

I changed the pipes and gained 13 HP or was it 15 HP I forgot ..Our RZ350 street pipes bring about a 16 lb. weight loss, a wide powerband from 6,500 RPM to 10,500 RPM and an over 20% powe

I never would have associated "Hippie" with 1980, this feels more 1972 than 1980. and at 4:27 there's a movie marquee with "A Clockwork Orange" (1971) And the "cagers" (car drivers, LOL) seem to be in late 1960s "cages" (cars) It's still COOL though, and I'd take REALLY! Any (all, if I had the money to collect...) these bikes! And to any AMF Harley "hater" out there: These ARE "REAL" Harley-Davidsons. There was a linear chain of ownership, unlike "Indian" which, while nice bikes, is a REVIVED brand, not continuous. (BTW I'm NOT "dissing" the "Indian" bikes, Been "shopping" them lately! But I just can't take people who say the AMF Harleys are not "real" Harleys, when in fact they ARE. Actually, I Should shut up about this, as the "Anti AMF" bias DOES help keep prices down on vintage bikes, LOL. 5:01 I actually NAILED IT!!! 1973! I was only 10 in 1972, but I felt this had a 1972 vibe. (A showcase of '73 models would have been "shot" in 1972).
I would perhaps do the modern-day Harley-Davidson to pop out some small low priced little fun bikes, their market "demo" is now older (I know, I'm one!) The Honda Goldwing loses NO PRESTIGE because the "Grom" exists! Do the same HD! I'd buy one TOMMOROW! These little bikes are bringing in NEW riders!

I have not heard much about em. Harley Davidson/AMF Ebduro’s. Technically Japanese as I understand ‘70s Harley’s? I’m not clear if that was about production of parts made in Japan, or the entire product?… Had great Japanese bikes at the time. And really still do. And you don’t get a break on price “buying American” with HD, unfortunately. Beautiful bikes though..Yamaha’s V-Max is every bit as nice, and less than half the price.

Bought a 1970 AMF HD cop bike with a 1973 engine out of Oakland, CA. back in 76. Had to rebuild it 3 times. Finally 1982 pumped it up with a S&S stroker kit and turned it in to a real AMF. ( Adios Mother Fucker )

When Harley was owned by AMF They were JUNK, also If not For President Reagan The Harley Davidson name would have been a memory. AMF executive’s nearly ran the company done the Drain. I had a New sportster during the AMF time frame and it was in the shop more then I was on the road with it.
In the 70s you could start small and young and grow with the brand. Just like I did with Honda. Why would i go to a harley after 6 Hondas? Thats the problem. We uad to go elsewhere for the small bikes we could afford and now that i can buy whatever i want why would i switch when Honda treated me well....
They had a 50cc mini bike made by Benelli I believe.

A new era began in 1971 with the development of twin-cylinder two-stroke racers of 250cc and 350cc capacity, designed at Aermacchi by their chief engineer, Ing. William Soncini. The first 250cc racer was very fast, with 46hp at 11,000rpm, and weighed only 250lbs. After Harley-Davidson acquired 100% of Aermacchi in 1972, they funded further racing development at the Aermacchi factory, and the racers were branded with Harley-Davidson on their fuel tanks. These two-stroke twins provided Harley-Davidson with their only Grand Prix wins, and four World Championships: the 250cc World Championship in 1974, '75, and '76, and the 350cc World Championship in 1976, all under rider Walter Villa.[3]

In 1960, Harley-Davidson consolidated the Model 165 and Hummer lines into the Super-10, introduced the Topper scooter, and bought fifty percent of Aermacchi's motorcycle division. Importation of Aermacchi's 250 cc horizontal single began the following year. The bike bore Harley-Davidson badges and was marketed as the Harley-Davidson Sprint. The engine of the Sprint was increased to 350 cc in 1969 and would remain that size until 1974, when the four-stroke Sprint was discontinued. After the Pacer and Scat models were discontinued at the end of 1965, the Bobcat became the last of Harley-Davidson's American-made two-stroke motorcycles. The Bobcat was manufactured only in the 1966 model year. Harley-Davidson replaced their American-made lightweight two-stroke motorcycles with the Italian Aermacchi-built two-stroke powered M-65, M-65S, and Rapido. The M-65 had a semi-step-through frame and tank. The M-65S was a M-65 with a larger tank that eliminated the step-through feature. The Rapido was a larger bike with a 125 cc engine. The Aermacchi-built Harley-Davidsons became entirely two-stroke powered when the 250 cc two-stroke SS-250 replaced the four-stroke 350 cc Sprint in 1974. Harley-Davidson purchased full control of Aermacchi's motorcycle production in 1974 and continued making two-stroke motorcycles there until 1978, when they sold the facility to Cagiva, owned by the Castiglioni family. Just what I want to do. Drive my Harley Davidson like a dirtbike.
The music and imagery was relaxing but also sad that those days are no longer with us. It was a much more pure time to live and also to enjoy motorcycles. Not like today. All these country roads have concrete and there's too much traffic.

Bless the good old days... except for the oil embargo, the 55mph speed limit, unreliable ignition systems that cut out in the rain (yes, even on Hondas), terrible brakes, and a few other things. Other that that, they were great.
@@CaptHollister I doubt you've ever rode a bike for one motorcycles don't use that much gas. Two get the starter fixed. Last no biker looks or cares about 55. PHONY!!!!
@@frankburdodrums8984 My 1976 CB400F used to run on two cylinders whenever it rained. So did my buddy's 1975 model. That had nothing to do with the starter, it was just that ignition coils were not properly protected on bikes of the period. I can tell you this in all certainty because it so happens that I still own that bike 40+ years later. The 55mph limit was a big thing when it was enacted and it's not true that bikers didn't care. The fuel economy also didn't matter when gas stations didn't have any gas to sell. Looking back on it, for those of us who lived through them, the 1970s were not the great time you seem to remember. Calling someone a phony because they remember things as they were rather than as you would like them to have been isn't very cool.

Me, I've ridden in the rain because when you're two weeks out on the road you don't get to choose the weather. I've even ridden through snowstorms on 2 occasions, but not by choice and a long time ago. In the 1970s (which is what we're talking about), people did care about the Arab oil embargo and the fuel shortages and national 55mph speed limit it brought about. You argue like a 12 year-old.

I am reading a lot of shovels where the last real Harley with soul. I would say each generation will say that about there motors. If you cut your teeth riding in the late 80s early 90s you would say that about the evo if you started late 90s to the 00s you would say the twin cam. My self I would say shovel and evo are the last greats from Harley the twin cam was okey
Yes the Shovel was the last raw and great engine. The Evo was a better engineered engine but something was lost, like Harley’s soul.
Hm.. had a Twincam, traded it in and got a '82 FXB Sturgis. Im from 72, and always liked the shovelhead as the local bad boy had one. Id be sitting at the icecream parlour eating my cone as a 10 yrs old, and this thing would thunder past 😁
What i really did not lika about the twincam was that it needed a certain amount of rpm to charge the battery and keep the fuel injection running. A shovel can idle much lower.

Why does it say 1980ties when it clearly was the 70ties? AMF owned Harley from 1969 to 1981. Then the company was sold back to Willie G Davidson and other investors for $80 million.

1979 was the last time AMF owned HD... Willy G and group took it over. This had to be from early 1970's. 1980 models do not carry the AMF logo. My two cents.
Sorry Ray your're wrong on that one, AMF sold H-D to Willie G and his financial backers in 1981, not 1979, so the 1980 H-D range still had the AMF logo on their gas tanks. This film was shot in 1973, AMF H-D sold the Italian Aermacchi motorcycle manufacturing facilities to Cagiva in 1978, so there wouldn't have been any 2-stroke lightweights in H-D's 1980 portfolio. The paintwork on these machines are for 1973, that's a dead giveaway.

90% of these bikes are still on the road, the other 10% made it home.
