The Watlington White Mark Myth

- What is the Watlington White Mark in the Oxfordshire Chilterns? Does its existence really relate to the common myth of the local squire and the church tower? In this joint production with @WC21UKProductionsLtd Hedley is joined by Darren in the town of Watlington to use telephoto drone technology to confirm or deny this tale, and the results may turn out to be a surprise.
Script/story/drone - Hedley
Ground shots/production - Darren
Camera operator - James Thorne
I urge anyone who likes this to also subscribe to WC21 UK Productions Limited to enjoy more grand locations, antiquarian discoveries, humour and adventure!

Hillarious! Whoever had the idea of putting you two in a video deserves all the love.
I enjoyed this video very much. The chemistry between Hedley and Darren is en point.
Oh and speaking of Hedley: I love the cap.
Thank you so much!! The cap is great, if perhaps a tad small
It was great working with you on this Hedley. Hopefully the owners of Glebe Farm are subscribers and we get an invite!
And you Sir!! Your presenting and editing is second to none
So enjoyable and interesting. In fact I have watched it twice, via Darren’s channel 😮 A stellar collaboration with a brilliant debunk too. Please Hedley, post weekly. 👏👏👍😀
Haha I will try!!
this did make me chuckle, and an interesting topic to boot, hope to see Hedley become RUclips's answer to Victor Meldrew :D
Hahaha thank you. I don't believe it!
Huge fun. Huzzah. More “Hedley Thorne investigates” please.
Well done WC21 (UK) - is that your real name? - for your part in this endeavour.
I still think it’s a giant Neolithic willy. Or has that been debunked too?
(Also well done to Henley’s teenager).
Haha I have passed that onto James!
Lol, very good! I'd be happy to watch more of these... weekly might be a stretch... perhaps fortnightly?!
I am planning the next, but as this took me a while to plan and script I don't think I can do these as regular as Paul and Darren's channels. But yes, there will be more!
Hahaha well done you 2! Ill pop over to Darren's channel and watch it there too 😁
Thanks Sam xx
'Carry on up the spire', Quality stuff, squire.
Haha thanks!!
I was fascinated, diverted and entertained - but none the wiser. Thank you so much for 13 and a half minutes minutes of inconsequentia (if that is a word). Subscribed!
Skuse the repetition. It's the effect this channel has on me.
Haha thank you!
Also, seriously this time, what an excellent video! And I love the intro for the new style DI Thorne's videos :)
Thank you so much! Credit to Darren for this style of editing! Really enjoyed this but couldn't do these without him.
This is so good! I'm not sure if we're witnessing the creation of an antiquarian version of Holmes and Watson here, or Morecambe and Wise. Either way, well done. Very entertaining.
Haha thank you, I'll gladly take that! This was fun to script and film (Darren edited it). I am conjuring up another already...
Totally enjoyed this
Thank you so much. Darren is great to work with!
@@hedleythorne This mark may be anything , great to watch your reasoning of possibilities unfold-You can't beat a feet on the ground investigation followed by a possible Mc Takeaway 👍👍
@@jameswalksinhistory3848 bloody teenagers.
I think it is an old medieval landing strip for very large drones in the days when drones didn't have four propellers, but wings (so not drones at all of course) and so needed a full landing runway. Yes? Did medieval drone-plans have wings? ;)
Absolutely. You only have to look at Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings!
Great start, and not cheesy at all, very entertaining.
Thank you!
Hi Hedley and Darren, just watched again, this time on Hedley's channel.
I remembered that you discussed this marker on the Wessex Way podcast, N°8 no less!! Good to see that you have returned to focus on this particular hillfiger.
Whilst you couldn't quite get the exact shot you wanted, at least not yet, its surely confirms the spire theory if not the reason for doing it.
I noted that MrWC broke the hat on in church rule (again) but in true Phillip Mold (or is it mould) style he just brushed it off .....
Just been snowing down here would you believe!!
Where to next for Hedley Thorne investigates??
All the best!!
Snowing? Wow we are in T shirts here in Polperro! I have a few ideas for other videos, one with Paul and one with Darren. Just early ideas.
Amazing episode Hedley ❤ well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you so much!!
Really good had a proper chuckle
Pleased that you enjoyed it!
Great vid Hedley and Darren, AKA the crazy bunch 🤣...I was wise enough to subscribe to Darren's wonderful channel quite a while ago, and as such, I know it's a good choice to subscribe to yours. Monty Python meets history is a delicious mix. Keep up the good work Hedley.
Thank you so much! Darren is quite the character isn't he. Great to work with!
@@hedleythorne I imagine you are both quite the characters to work with! ...I stick to my theory that hill just displayed an exclamation mark of surprise having you two romping across it😂.
@@philcollinson328 😄😄👍
@@hedleythorne hahaha 🤣👍Being serious however...Wonderful vid Hedley...your in depth knowledge of history is an encyclopaedia for future generations ...I hope you continue your channel.
@philcollinson328 thank you, I will. Most of my RUclips work is Wessex Ways but I upload my own videos here now and again. Next up Wales hopefully
9:47 Darren "Lets go and see if it's worked"...takes 5 paces to the left 😂
Great collaboration chaps 👍 Keep 'em coming...
Haha thanks will do.
You are right! I got a tripod instead of a teenager and it's the best decision I ever made.
Cheaper and less hassle in the long run I find. Also, quieter.
Why should he be furious? He disproved one theory, and found a much more plausible answer to the puzzle.
I loved it really - great fun to make this video, though "grumpy Hedley" seems to be something that people like for whatever reason.
Excellent video!
A theory: Look to the NW and you will find Pyrton Manor. It has its own church, St Mary's, as any self respecting land owner would have as a symbol of power on those days. This would have irked Squire Edward Horne so my supposition is he created the Mark to annoy the Squire of Pyrton Manor, who perhaps regularly rode over the fields where you could see it from - there is a path on the old maps from Pyrton Manor to Cuxham road that looks like it would be in the perfect spot to see the spire!
The farm you could not get into to see if it lined up, does not show on old maps and the vicarage was next to St Leonard's Church - now gone. All conjecture of course.
Interesting, and something I will speak with Darren about. Also I wonder whether Horne bought Pyrton Manor, as some resources suggest.
I often thought about figuring out where the tower and the white mark lined up and going there. Now I don’t need to bother!
My OCD got the better of me to be honest!
All you had to do was sit on the bottom of the mark & see what appears past the top of the church tower.
That would have been a quick video!
If that poor man keeps getting "furious" every time you learn something he should probably stay at home and have a cup of tea. Probably camomile tea, help him keep calm.
Haha!! I love playing "furious"!
That was most entertaining. 😄
Thank you so much
hello Hedley and Darren , great video, this was so much fun to watch, and of course very interesting , it looks like a big *!* to me lol, really well done both 😊
Haha thank you!
Really entertaining. Like the two Ronnie's you two. Only better.
Haha I'll take that, thanks!
I had to come back and watch this again, it having occurred to me that I didn’t see the “Gateway Tweed” item… and Tweedy has just made a video of an item “made of tweed offcuts”. Phew, panic over. Gateway Tweed firmly in place.
Also, it occurs to me that an item of clothing generally unseen might be the next step? I’m thinking SOCKS, sir.
Hahaha!! Gateway tweed in place, though I also retain a fondness for my other hat.
5 minutes away from me! great video
Thank you! Ooh are you the local squire...?
@@hedleythorne no just a tetty local
Hedley you’re a natural. A natural what I’m not entirely sure but a natural nonetheless 🤷
By the way, what happens when you take your hands out of your pockets?
My hands are surgically attached to my pockets. It's a legal thing. 😅
Looks like a ski slope to me.
Haha true! Midwinter that may work
It looks like, even if you line up the white mark with the church, the 'steeple' leans to the right.
Good point, now I watch it back
To feature on Hills and Hillforts soon.
Is this a typical sort of investigation?
Not really, just to friends having fun looking into something that has puzzled us for a while.
