As retired Coast Guard MH 65 aircrew I can assure you that A- that cable could absolutely hold both of them, even after half the wires gone B- there are bolt cutters, tape, and a backup hook that we can kinda weave onto the cable after we cut the frayed part off. And C- if we do have to leave a swimmer in the water we throw out their survival raft so they can ride out the weather, away from sharks, until another helo can make it on scene.

@Brad Roberts True, but also, what the hell is the flight mechanic doing, thats the person working the hoist, just watching this happen? Should have started lowering them and alerting the pilots so they can slow down and reduce elevation in a safe area, but then the fall would have been 5 ft and they would have had to use super slow motion for that scene

Mona Bale That never happens, our maintenance is meticulous on all of our gear and rescue equipment. In fact the flight mechanics will pay out a bunch of cable on the deck before every flight. If they actually had Coastie who flew on helicopters on to speak for us, one of them could have explained how a cable could part.

As a Navy Aircrew Rescue Swimmer, that cable fraying scene was always so irritating! But someone else already mentioned the quick splice/back-up double rescue hook. What I came here for is to tell the story of when I was doing SAR training in the Indian Ocean about 1,000 miles from the nearest land. My crewchief/hoist operator signaled to me from the hovering helo more than once to hurry up, even though he knew I was practicing a time consuming double-lift technique. So, my trainee survivor and I just clipped in to the hook with our normal harnesses and signaled for a lift. When we got to the door hanging out in the 70’ hover, I was like, “What the hell, man!? You know a double-lift takes longer.”. His response, “There’s a shark! Inside the rotor arc! With you!”

Former Navy SAR swimmer here ... what she said about the knife is truth. I was issued a Mk3 dive knife which is like the shortest shittiest pointiest plastic handled Bowie you'll ever see. During the course one of my classmates sliced himself pretty good with one. Many would replace the knife at their first duty station, I ended up replacing mine with something that looks a lot like an abalone knife and some time later had the rigger sew a pocket into my gear for a spyderco hawkbill.
My biggest concern was people freaking out and trying to get them in a horse collar safely. That or the helo deciding not to work in flight ... we used to fly SH-3's then, I hated that aircraft ...

I was an Operations Specialist on a CG in the early to mid 90s . I read a message out of Radio that recalled the current issue dive because the tip had been known to puncture the sheath and injure the swimmer . We had billets for two SAR swimmers in the ship's company , but they worked from the motor whaleboat during SAR and MOB . They used their personally ownx knives . When we were deployed with a Helo Det , the SAR swimmers were members of the Helo Squadron and I don't know what knives they used .

Other than in captivity, there are no recorded attacks on humans by orcas. They are curious animals but they somehow know instinctually that humans are not a prey item. Won't stop the 26ft long dolphin from messing up your day if it decided it wanted to.

Short anecdote on the "The Ocean Will Fuck You Up" by Marty...Late 70's, Bravo Co. 1/75th, Little Jekyll Island GA, Atlantic Ocean...helo-casting 35/35 out of a Chinook 5 miles off the coast...full dive gear minus the tanks...weapons, 2 extra mags, knife, compass, dive board (map) and "waterproofed" crappy squad radio...at about the 1 mile mark heading to the beach the 25' Mako safety boat idles up to my swim buddy and I...the CO, XO, the boat operator and the Scuba NCO are in the boat...the Scuba NCO is holding a M21...I ask him what the rifle is for...his reply..."The sharks of course!"...here I am connected to my swim buddy by 6' of 550 bowlined into snap links...2 for 1 snack...Sua Sponte

Agreed with the Brojaq, Unless you are a professional shark fighter, pretty much every knife for use around water should have a sheepsfoot blade or the tip blunted off. It's way to easy to stab yourself on the waves, most of us had to learn hard way lol.

SAR from 89 - one month after the death came to light. Wicked hard course, most people failed. My ship sent 6 people to the class after me and another shipmate went. He failed, as well as the other 6 over two years (all TESTED before going - PRT excellent or better). Had a Navy Diver fail out first week - couldn't do the swim.
