- Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. The topic of this video is Helios. He was the Titan-god of the sun in Greek mythology, also associated with sight and oaths. He lived in a golden palace at the edge of the world, emerging each morning to drive his chariot across the sky, bathing the earth in life-giving light. During the day, he was nearly omniscient. As the sun arced above the world of gods and men, He observed everything that happened. This made him privy to many secrets, to many betrayals and plots known only by the perpetrators and schemers themselves. Thus, it was that he often served as the mechanism by which wrongdoings were exposed.
Helios was said to rise from and set in Oceanus. Oceanus was the Titan-god who personified the great river that encircled the world, and as such his waters constituted the farthest eastern and western points. Thus it was that Helios ascended from the Titan’s waters in the east each morning and descended into the Titan’s waters in the west each evening. When his arc brought him to the far west, where it was the sun set, he descended into a golden cup that bore him along the flow of Oceanus back to his resplendent abode, where he would rise again to begin the next day.
Helios was portrayed as a handsome, radiant man, with fiery all-seeing eyes. Dazzling light shone from him. His hair was golden, luscious locks spilling out beneath the golden helmet that armored his head, a rayed sun disk often shown behind him, and the richly-spun garment that clothed him billowed in the wind as he raced across the heavens in a chariot pulled by a team of four winged horses.

Helios wasn't an Olympian?
He started out as a non Olympian, however in later eras, Helios was associated/syncretized with Apollo, so it's more so accepted that He is thru that association
