We might see a punter taken in the 3rd round. This guy is a game changer being able to flip field positions like that. He will give your defense an extra 10 yards every drive.
Important to note he's not 1st in the country in net punting yards (3rd) and also the guy second in total yards (avg) is just half a yard below him. So, it's not like he's breaking records by obscene margins. The guy at Colorado State is averaging 51.7 yards per punt, and the guy at Rutgers still has yet to kick a touchback this season. Araiza has 13 touchbacks. He's very good at flipping the field, but needs a lot of work in the finesse category. In the NFL you have to be just as good at pinning a team deep as you are at punting the ball a mile.

@@mikeratkiewicz6720 I notice that but if he’s punting deep from his area, back up cuz it’s gonna bounce towards the returner anyway with the lower punts he goes for. And for the guys fair catching deep let it go

Yeah that’s the first thing I noticed. How fast his punts were coming back down. Distance is impressive and all but it doesn’t mean much when a properly positioned returner gains a wide open field.
Yep - draft him and use him primarily as your field goal kicker and kick offs (eliminating ALL kick returns) because the chargers rarely kick on fourth down..and if they have to kick from their end zone you can completely flip the field -
This dude is not only a fantastic punter. But he seems to be a decent kicker as well. He could be a fantastic player to have on your team in case your kicker goes down from injury
Honestly, a team like the Lions would be well served to take him No. 1 overall. He can do more for their defense than their defense by giving them an extra 20-30 yards to work with.
It's going to be a bit different in the NFL as he won't have the 3 man protection on his punts. He'll have to get the kick off faster but still a day 2 pick
Standing in his own EndZone and Punting it the ENTIRE Field. His coverage team downed his kick INSIDE the 5 yard line. When your kicking from the EndZone, your opponent is thinking about starting possession at Mid-Field. NOT PINNED inside the 5. Holy Hell.

He’s going to be an absolute weapon for whoever ends up getting him. Not only is he the best punter I’ve ever seen, he also gets touchbacks on almost all of his kickoffs. While he’s not really a good enough field goal kicker to do kickoffs, punts and field goals in the NFL, he can do all three of his team’s kicker gets hurt or is a last minute scratch for whatever reason. He also can make tackles when necessary.
I am a season ticket holder at Boise State. I watched this dude for years and every time he played Boise he would shit the bed. Like I was happy because it helped my team but at the same time i was mad because I wanted to see this dude hit a huge punt in person. Nice pick bills
Good lord. He just makes me feel like a complete wuss... I played soccer my whole life, and I messed around with kicking field goals and punting sometimes. My longest punt ever went about 45-50 yards in the air. Longest field goal was like 43 yards or something like that - I know it was under 45 yards for sure. This guys AVERAGE punt travels 65-70 yards in the air! I measured one of them at 82 yards in the air! He punted from his goal line and it landed at the 18 yard line! Holy shit! I bet he will hit a 90 yard punt some day... If he plays for the broncos at Mile High Stadium he might kick a 100 yarder if he gets the wind at his back. This dude is a friggin beast! Seriously I think with about a 15-20mph wind, at 5,000ft above sea level, he'd punt the ball 90 yards, and he's gonna kick like a 70 yard field goal one day. He might pop the ball. I seriously can't believe this dude can kick the ball that far - he's got 10 yards on literally anybody, NFL punters not just college. I don't know who the record holder is for longest punt not counting bounces - just thru the air - but he is gonna beat that record if he hasn't already.
I played goalkeeper in high school, I could usually drop a punt at about 40-50 yards in the air. Goofing around with a football recently as an out-of-shape adult, I could probably get about a 30-40 yard punt and I'm sure if I trained up I could hit 50 again. Under no pressure, with as much time as I want to wind up, in perfect conditions. This dude makes a 70 yard punt with a blocker in his face look effortless. God damn.
Huge SDSU fan here - thank you for the excellent highlights, very well done! I really think that Araiza will be drafted no later than the middle of the 2nd round, just wait and see. His punt average is also higher than EVERY single NFL punter this year, he crushes kickoffs AND is a very good field goal kicker. Who doesn't want to literally flip the field in the NFL? It's rarely done, but Araiza could change that and make a huge impact on a team.
He also led the NCAA in touchbacks, which isn't good. His Net Punting Average (the average that really matters for punters) was 3rd in the NCAA because of that. He's great at flipping a field, but there are other punters out there that, if you're not kicking from inside your own 20 yard line, are much better to have. If I'm taking any punter this year, it's Adam Korsak, and I don't take him before the 6th round.
@@scottinsd1 - He doesn't kick FGs. And I wouldn't go about lauding Araiza's FG prowess. He was 98th in the FBS in FG%. The Freshman PK at Middle Tennessee State was better than him. Hell, Rutgers kicker was better than him. Araiza is great when it comes to punting deep within your own territory. No one argues that. He's generational in that regard. But until he learns that it's not about him and his stats, and it's about putting your team in the best position to win, he's not the best punter - period. 14 touchbacks was the WORST in the NCAA, and frankly an embarrassment for the guy being lauded as the best punter in the game. Best leg - sure. No question. But best punter, no way. Think about it this way... In baseball. If a pitcher lead in Wins, ERA, and Strikeouts, do you give the Cy Young to the guy with the most innings? No. That's what Araiza is. The guy with the most innings. Korsak lead in Net Punt Avg. Kicks inside the 20. Kicks inside the 10. And least Touchbacks (0). Even the guys in the Gator bowl were going on about how he hasn't kicked a touchback since 2019 in over 200 punts (and NCAA record). He also broke the NCAA record for Net Punt Average this year. Sorry, say what you will, but as a pure punter, Araiza has a long way to go compared to Korsak. If he learns control and to not put himself above the team and pull up when it counts, he can potentially be the best ever - because no one has a leg like him. But he's not there. Not even close. Punters in the NFL with the best legs get cut for having 10 touchbacks in 16 games. He had 14 in 12.
@@scottinsd1 - Yes, they are. Stats don't lie brother. Not taking anything away from Araiza - he's got the strongest leg in the game. No one is arguing that. But just like a pitcher who throws 102 MPH without accuracy, he's not "the best." He was close, don't get me wrong. His raw punt average was sick, and he still finished 7th in Net Punting - but he wasn't the best. The best punter has always been defined by the player who maintains the best net punting average along with higher percentage of inside the 20 and low touchbacks. Araiza did well on two of those three. Here's the crazy thing about Araiza - of his 14 touchbacks, had he pulled them up and dropped them around the 10 on average, he would have dropped his Raw Punt Avg to 49.4 (putting him back to 3rd in raw average), but would have increased his Net Average to 46.0 and made him the most efficient punter in NCAA history over Korsak. But he didn't do that. He either lacked the control to do so, or cared more about his record-setting raw average. He had the most punts leading to touchbacks in opposing territory. That's not good. He had some net punts that were under 20 yards because he'd drill them out of the end-zone. Not into - out the back. Sorry, it's a travesty that he was selected 1st team AA and Ray Guy over Korsak. To compare it to another football position, would you ever give the Doak Walker (RB Award) to a RB who fumbled the ball 14 times? You don't have to even answer that. The guy would have been benched. Most punters with Araiza's touchback total get benched. Obviously the program was complicit with this strategy, and helped to promote him based on those booming kicks and huge raw average. It's just a shame - cause he could have legit been the best with a little accuracy and selflessness.

I like how’s he not scared to tackle the returners like most punters. He’s really down there trying to make tackles instead of just playing safety
You do know safety’s tackle too, right?
Watching this, I’d say he should’ve been the number one pick of the first round. Brandon Beane and The Bills have done it again.. what a steal! 👏🏼
Not exactly a theft, but definitely a felony.
WELL HIS CAREER MIGHT BE OVER…
Assuming makes an ass out of you and me. Don't believe everything you hear from the news. He's back in the NFL, innocent and playing for the chiefs
@@CT1513-hw8mohe did say might
Whos here after his career just ended
Just getting started thanks again bills, sincerely Chiefs kingdom
Damn, these morons will believe anything the media says about a dude these days. Guilty until proven innocent
This is awesome but I feel like if some of the returners lined up further back they’d get a serious head of steam for a return. They’d be rolling by the time defenders got to them. I wonder how his hang time actually stacks up as well.
The problem is not all of them go for 70 yards. If his average is 53 then you're not sure when he's gonna really uncork one. Tough to gauge.
@@mikeratkiewicz6720 I notice that but if he’s punting deep from his area, back up cuz it’s gonna bounce towards the returner anyway with the lower punts he goes for. And for the guys fair catching deep let it go
@@salarycapo you're right. The other option is teams have started putting two returners back there. If he's deep in his end zone you might as well play it long. If it goes short consider yourself lucky. Either way it's a discussion I never thought would exist.
I was thinking something similar. It’s called out kicking the coverage unit.
Yeah that’s the first thing I noticed. How fast his punts were coming back down. Distance is impressive and all but it doesn’t mean much when a properly positioned returner gains a wide open field.
I never thought I would see a punter highlight video.
It was great!
Probably the last one ever so enjoy it.
Chargers need this man
Yep - draft him and use him primarily as your field goal kicker and kick offs (eliminating ALL kick returns) because the chargers rarely kick on fourth down..and if they have to kick from their end zone you can completely flip the field -
You mean they got Charges ON this man
This dude is not only a fantastic punter. But he seems to be a decent kicker as well. He could be a fantastic player to have on your team in case your kicker goes down from injury
Honestly, a team like the Lions would be well served to take him No. 1 overall. He can do more for their defense than their defense by giving them an extra 20-30 yards to work with.
They have a probowler in jack fox
@@melkiperiii2102 jack fox isn't booming 80 yard punts.
@@cmstache i dont think no punter currently in the nfl can even do that 😳
It's going to be a bit different in the NFL as he won't have the 3 man protection on his punts. He'll have to get the kick off faster but still a day 2 pick
Until Jared Goff throws a pick 6 and the long punt was for naught
Standing in his own EndZone and Punting it the ENTIRE Field. His coverage team downed his kick INSIDE the 5 yard line. When your kicking from the EndZone, your opponent is thinking about starting possession at Mid-Field. NOT PINNED inside the 5. Holy Hell.

The false allegations? Me
He’s going to be an absolute weapon for whoever ends up getting him.

Matt Araiza best punter in prison
Clown
Matt(man) begins
The Araiza of the punt
God damn.
I used to be able to throw a football over a mountain in high school
Never thought I'd be watching a highlight video of a punter
This guys got a lot of talent! Hopefully he doesn’t commit a terrible crime that ruins his career.

As a SDSU grad, I love this. Was waiting for Pat McAfee to start talking about him. Hopefully he lands on a decent NFL team.
Just not the colts, for Pat’s sake
Bills will take care of him
I'd love him on the ravens or a team that would abuse his abilities
He did, he did land on a decent NFL team. The team is so good there are games where he won’t need to punt, but yeah….
@@DK-wl4ne Oh really? Tell me - how's Adam when it comes to kicking field goals?
@@DK-wl4ne I guess the folks who gave Araiza the Ray Guy trophy are just a bunch of idiots, like me. Whatever dude.
Man ruined his career just as it started
