    "Let's Generalize About Men"
    Starring Rachel Bloom, Donna Lynne Champlin, Vella Lovell, Gabrielle Ruiz
    Written by Adam Schlesinger, Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, and Aline Brosh McKenna
    Valencia:
    RIGHT NOW WE’RE ANGRY AND SAD.
    Heather:
    IT’S OUR RIGHT TO GET RIGHTEOUSLY MAD.
    Paula:
    AT EVERY MEMBER OF THE OPPOSITE SEX;
    Rebecca:
    OH GOD WE HATE THEM!
    Paula:
    LET’S NOT DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THEM AT ALL.
    Rebecca:
    LET’S JUST DRINK A LOT MORE ALCOHOL!
    All:
    AND THEN HIGH FIVE EACH OTHER AS WE MAKE A BUNCH OF BLANKET STATEMENTS!
    LET’S GENERALIZE ABOUT MEN
    LET’S GENERALIZE ABOUT MEN
    LET’S TAKE ONE BAD THING ABOUT ONE MAN AND APPLY IT TO ALL OF THEM
    LET’S CONFLATE ALL THE GUYS
    LET’S GENERALIZE ABOUT MEN!
    Paula:
    ALL MEN ARE COMPLETELY REPRESSED
    Rebecca & Heather:
    UH-HUH.
    Valencia:
    ALL MEN ONLY WANT TO HAVE SEX.
    Rebecca:
    THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS, ALL THREE BILLION MEN ARE LIKE THIS.
    Paula & Valencia:
    ALL 3.6 BILLION MEN.
    Heather:
    ALL MEN ARE EMOTIONALLY STUNTED.
    Paula:
    WHEN ASKED HOW THEY FEEL, EVERY MAN’S ALWAYS GRUNTED!
    Rebecca:
    And why do men never listen and only think about themselves
    AS OPPOSED TO WOMEN WHO ALWAYS LISTEN AND NEVER THINK ABOUT THEMSELVES?!
    Paula & Valencia & Heather:
    Oooh, I hear you, girl.
    All:
    LET’S GENERALIZE ABOUT MEN
    LET’S GENERALIZE ABOUT MEN
    LET’S GET SUPER LIT AND NOT ADMIT THIS IS SOME KIND OF PRIMAL RITUAL WE NEED NOW AND THEN
    MAYBE OUR SPIRITS WILL RISE IF WE
    GENERALIZE ABOUT MEN
    Heather & Valencia:
    ALL MEN ARE STUPID AND CHILDISH.
    Rebecca & Paula:
    EVEN THE ONES WHO ARE “SMART AND MATURE.”
    All:
    ALL EVERY MAN DOES EVERYDAY IS WATCH PORN, EAT WINGS, BURP, FART AND SNORE
    Rebecca:
    Hey, what about GAY men?
    Paula:
    Oh no, they’re fine.
    Heather & Valencia:
    GAY MEN ARE ALL REALLY GREAT. EVERY SINGLE ONE!
    Rebecca & Paula:
    THEY’RE NEVER MEAN, JUST SASSY -
    THEY’RE ALL COMPLETELY ADORABLE AND FUN!
    All:
    SO LET’S FOCUS FOR NOW ON STRAIGHT MEN
    LET’S JUST GENERALIZE ABOUT THEM.
    Valencia:
    They’re all monsters!
    Paula:
    They’re murderers!
    Rebecca:
    They’re rapists!
    Heather:
    Totally.
    Paula:
    Wait… I have sons!
    Heather & Valencia & Rebecca:
    YOUR SONS ARE GONNA BE RAPISTS!

    At the middle of the song I was thinking "What about gay men?" then they start generalizing gay men lmfao

    • @BunnyTheQueenSkepticFirebrand
      @BunnyTheQueenSkepticFirebrand 6 лет назад +443

      I think that's a common thought process for women in general when we're complaining about men. At some point in our angry thoughts about men and the way they treat us, we remember that gay men exist. I think because we don't really see them as a threat, typically, there's a sort of mental wall we build around them where we think of them apart from other men. I wonder if men do this also? Women tend to love gay men, but men, no matter straight or gay don't seem to like lesbians. They seem okay with bisexuals though. hmmm

    • @oo4667
      @oo4667 6 лет назад +336

      Bunny shame because gay men can be just as misogynistic as straight men. and men only like lesbians when they're wanking off to them smdh

    • @BunnyTheQueenSkepticFirebrand
      @BunnyTheQueenSkepticFirebrand 6 лет назад +144

      Oh yes, I know, they can be even more misogynistic sometimes. No doubt, well that's kind of the point, in any group like gender, race, sexual orientation, etc, you're always going to find exceptions to the generalizations. I think as long as we don't forget that, sometimes generalizations can be useful, in certain contexts, but yeah. The fact that men seem to reject lesbians (but love bisexuals) makes it seem like they're really just interested in us for sex, even the gay ones, I think even though they're not attracted to women, like when women are attracted to them. Again, generalizing. but still. I dunno.

    • @BunnyTheQueenSkepticFirebrand
      @BunnyTheQueenSkepticFirebrand 6 лет назад +71

      You directing that at me, Monokhem? I'm not a straight woman, or a lesbian. I'm a bisexual woman. Regardless I don't depend on men for anything unless I'm paying them to do something, but that's just because I don't ever want to be in a situation where I can't just walk away from anyone, so I don't depend on women either, unless I'm paying them. Interesting, but not surprising.

    I love how Rachel Bloom said this song manages to be feminist and anti-feminist at the same time. I love how it feels like there's some freedom in women getting to call men out on awful shit, while it also mocks how it's part of straight culture for women to generalize about men like this, almost as a ritual to make them feel better. It mocks hypocrisy but is also so extremely over the top that it's sort of a celebration to just letting go and being judgy with your friends over a glass of wine sometimes. It's also extremely catchy and fun, and the performance is perfectly executed. It's just perfect.

    • @LiberalSquared
      @LiberalSquared 4 года назад +520

      I don't necessarily think that "bitching about men" is feminist. Every feminist I know agrees that toxic masculinity (not all masculinity, just the parts that are toxic,) hurts men, too. You can hate the sociological implications of male privilege without hating men, just like you can hate the sociological implications of white privilege without hating white people. The only "feminists" who hate men are TERFs, and they can fuck right off, most feminists hate them.

      How is it antifeminist ? I Just want to understand

    • @sam4330
      @sam4330 4 года назад +472

      @@anoni6108 I can’t know for sure what Rachel Bloom meant, but this is my impression:
      The song enforces certain stereotypes that support some parts of sexism. Like the heteronormative stereotype of the lazy man who can’t even do the dishes while the dutiful woman keeps the house clean. There is a sentiment among many heterosexuals that this is the way it should be, as if men’s refusal to clean the house is somehow a natural part of being a man rather than a social issue. It’s sort of a “men are the worst, lol” rather than “men seriously need to step up”. This song gives off that vibe. It becomes even more apparent when they say that gay men are all great. Because even though gay men face homophobia, they still benefit from male privilege.
      The song is also generalizing about women and feminists, by depicting women’s complaints as frivolous, and by making satire of women’s culture (the “girls’ night” thing, where women supposedly gather to rant about men). I would’t call the song actually anti-feminist though. It’s sort of meta, it’s like it’s making satire of satire of women, and it’s criticizing this form of “female empowerment”. Because over-generalizing about men and claiming that women are the greatest thing that has ever happened may feel good at the moment, but it isn’t going to help fighting sexism, and it may even enforce it.

    • @jacobodom8401
      @jacobodom8401 4 года назад +440

      It's actually hi-lighting that this method of coping is unhealthy and unhelpful.
      Imagine the reverse of guys getting drunk and conflating one bad trait of one woman with all women, like the "Incels" (doesn't sound so good now does it).
      The point is that blaming all of the opposite sex for their relationship issues (while drunk) is the least productive thing one could do.
      At the end of the song Paula realizes what she is doing and how this general attitude is harmful to men and boys growing up in the world like her kids.
      She actually feels bad at the end of the song because she has perpetuated harmful stereotypes.

    • @jacobodom8401
      @jacobodom8401 4 года назад +150

      @Atria Laurent Read my original response again.
      I know it was satirical otherwise they would not have made a point to show Paula feeling bad at the end. I never said that the writers or the characters think "all men are like that" - in fact I said the exact opposite. The song clearly ridicules how society stereotypes men and how women - in situations similar to this - generalize in order to feel better about themselves. (something both sexes are guilty of)
      The show takes time to give male characters depth like the song "Guys Cry too".
      My point to @ninasfireescape is that Women don't actually need that kind of moment and neither do Men. Sure we all get frustrated in dating now and again but conflating or generalizing helps no one - especially not the people doing it.

      This is ice hole fishing, something what she always does. If any of us straight and angry people catch on the bait, that's instant admission that anger is driven by psychosexual resentment towards a string of rejection which keeps people from acknowledging the other side could appreciate the admission said anger is built on generalization.
      That way, we can both enjoy a wacky song and have an honest conversation about frustration. It would be eons better than the low low bar of "I'm at least not a guy who only furthers careers if they whack me off".
      Part of the resentment on the side of women comes from guys like me who seemingly do nothing to stop such a power play, and this is not an excuse, but there's a reason I learn about the Harvey's from the media, they lie to us guys too insomuch that only a trusted circle of "friends" know about what they do.

    Everyone’s debating about interpretations of this song so I wanna share mine.
    To me this song is just from the point of view of a person who is aware that generalization of men is inaccurate and doesn’t think it’s the most moral thing to do but also admittedly uses it as a form of stress relief from misogyny. Like the song itself is really fun and upbeat, the person’s clearly having a good time generalizing about men, but also the lyrics are really self-aware, like “clearly we’re just generalizing”, but then the upbeat music of the song makes it sound sort of triumphant like, “okay, yeah, sure, I’m generalizing, but Im only human and I deserve some stress relief!” but also the song exaggerates that behavior as a way of being like “is this really what you think I do though? You think I’m intentionally making a bold statement about all men when I’m just venting?” And more and more mixed layers of feelings.
    To me, the point of this song is not to convey a clear message, it’s to capture a feeling, and I think it succeeds at that and that’s why I like it.
    I think a lot of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend songs are like this, they tend to poke fun at human feelings by showing how absurd they tend to be, while also giving those emotions space with a huge dance number. A lot of crazy ex-girlfriend songs are like “Yes my emotions are stupid! But I still have them!” I think this song is popular beyond the show so some people may be missing the full context of the tone of the show.

    Things I'm OBSESSED with in the video:
    Valencia
    Rachel's voice on "All three billion men are like this"
    Heather's voice on "All men are emotionally stunted"
    The self awareness (Ritual we need now and then)
    The Ending (YOU'RE SONS ARE GOING TO BE RAPISTS)
    So happy this show is back!!!

      Her character is losing personality in my opinion. She can't be this goody two shoes. Also, White Josh he's dumb but in the premiere was very different. They shouldn't take away these traits.

    • @eliotj
      @eliotj 6 лет назад +31

      Eimard Gomes I agree. Valencia was obtuse, controlling, and vain, while also being an outwardly positive and hardworking person. She was a dynamic and slightly tragic character. Now it seems like they took away all the bad traits and left only the good ones... which makes her a lot less interesting. That being said Gabrielle Ruiz is still killing it with the singing and dancing.

    • @ashleyb2984
      @ashleyb2984 6 лет назад +22

      Eliot Schager I don’t think we’ve seen enough to judge yet... she’s just trying to help get revenge right now which is in line with how her character has always been. Both her and Heather weren’t the focus this episode but that’s okay. I’m sure they’ll get more time.

    • @shimrajaimefine5270
      @shimrajaimefine5270 6 лет назад +58

      I don't think they have changed her personality, her goals have just changed. She said she had trouble having female friends before but that she really enjoyed being friends with Rebecca before the kiss. Valencia isn't an inherently nasty person. The characters are also in a way, shown through Rebecca's eyes so I think that has something to do with it too. But she got aggressive towards Rebecca cause of Josh. But Josh isn't part of her life in that way, anymore so Rebecca isn't a threat to her. And Josh hurt her so badly that it's a bonding point for her and Rebecca. Their friendship isn't out of left field. And Valencia's traits are still there. She still can be nasty and aggressive, her feelings are just no longer directed at Rebecca. She stole Anna's keys with no remorse, was passive aggressive about Anna claiming not to know her weight, and is willing to help Rebecca to sue Josh. While I am sure the suing is in part to help her friend, there is obviously a personal interest in doing so. She wasted 15 years on him, only to have him propose to some other girl very shortly after they broke up, he ruined her new dream of being a wedding planner immediately after this dream began, and in general she is tired of seeing him be reckless with other people's feelings. She is far from a goody-two shoes. I feel like she just has more depth now, because instead of seeing this stereotypical "I hate all other women" hot girl trope, we see someone with motivations for her actions, with actual rationality behind her behavior. She has more personality in general now, which isn't exactly uncommon after a break up. She is exploring who she is without someone she's been with since she was a young teenager. A lot of her hopes and dreams were built around her and Josh living their lives together, so she has to start all over again. And while it might seem odd for her to want to be friends with Rebecca, she openly stated that Rebecca wasn't really their problem, and she was right. Josh had been hesitating to commit to her long before Rebecca showed up. It may have cemented some things, but Valencia recognizes that Josh was the problem and therefore Josh gets the brunt of the blame. Her being willing to separate that out, and direct her frustration where it really belongs, shows a lot of depth to me. But that's just my opinion...I also may watch this show entirely too much >>

    • @shimrajaimefine5270
      @shimrajaimefine5270 6 лет назад +4

      I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS SEASON! I am so pumped to see how the characters develop. What I love about this show is how no one is who they appear to be at first. I feel like the way we are first introduced to characters is almost exclusively through Rebecca's eyes. And then they start to develop into real people (cause they are supposed to be REAL people), that have actual depth outside of what Rebecca sees from them. And I REALLY love that. None of them went off in the direction I expected them to.
