- Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Driscoll, a cannon crew member instructor at the US Field Artillery School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, walks us through 41 essential items an artillery soldier would bring on a mission. While some of Driscoll's gear is used by other units in the US Army, he showcases artillery-specific items like the M2 collimator and the fire-control computer.

They forgot to cover the most important items: Copenhagen dip, cigarettes, and snacks. 😂
Poggy bait for the win! 😉
Don't forget a life long regret of being complicit in war crimes.
@@akino1692 Zero regrets here. Well maybe the regret of not being able to go back and do it all again. But other than that? NOPE!😁

Artillery is arguably the single most important component in a modern army. Nice to see them get respect.
Not even close
No it's not 😂
I'd argue its the second most important, behind the infantry.
In WWI the French had the best artillery in all of Europe. While the Germans had the best infantry.
The French were able to defeat the German guns via excellent counter battery fire, and once the german guns were silenced. They were able to greatly weaken the German position.
But the French infantry were still unable to overwhelm the German positions, even when French Artillery had achieved fire superiority.
Infantry are the Queen of Battle. Artillery is an incredibly important part of any army.
But as WWI taught us, and as the Russians learned to their Chagrin during the Ukraine conflict, it all comes down to the infantry. Time and time again.
Air power is probably most important it does everything artillery does+medivac

Good to see an NCO that isn’t super serious and even asks for help from the group.👍
Humble, approachable and credible.
Soft
The artillery knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the artillery from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
But, I always say the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.
But if the VP is such a VIP, shouldn't we keep this on the QT or we will all end up on KP.
If this is true, is it not true?
I like how candid this was. Didn't feel overly edited or scripted -- this is the way. Good work to the instructor and Business Insider.
Thanks for watching!
Seems like a chill and funny guy lol
That's mostly how Artillery guys and gals are. Super chill and fun to be around, but get serious when the situation demands it.
He is. I was there with him 2 years ago.

After 14 minutes I am ready for my first fire mission. What a great instructor.
As a teen growing up on Fort Sill i loved hearing the sounds of freedom every day while in school. Now as an adult i get to hear the sounds of freedom from the Marine side of things at Quantico. Wouldn't trade it for nothing!
The va has determined that your hearing loss is not service related.
Nice 105mm howitzer.
We had the M101 that saw action in WWII , Korea and Vietnam.
Times and technology has changed but it is good

It's impressive to see Staff Sergeant attention to detail in preparing for field exercises, ensuring he has the necessary gear for safety and effectiveness. 💪 His emphasis on hydration and maintenance tools underscores the importance of readiness in challenging environments.
Was at Ft Sill in 1971 . Some things are the same, some modern digital equipment. It is still the greatest killer on the battlefield
Thank you all real soldiers for protecting all Americans and allies around the world.
Together we are strong and can overcome anything and anyone.

Shoutout to our FA and ADA servicemembers that are unfortunately stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I know the struggle of being in Lawton myself, stay strong!!! 😂😂😂

Artillery, King of Battle! Often forgotten. Even the current russian-Ukraine war, artillery fire accounts for about 80% of the casualties on both sides
That was one of my Chiefs!! 13B all the way baby!!
These are the best episodes!
I think the best part is they made the triple 7 do multiple fire missions just to not say anything about it
What they don't show is scrambled brains from the pressure when each one is fired :)))
Yes!!
Gotta love to see that the meta hasn’t changed too much since round 2
This is coming from a army vet that spent 7 years in 2 FA units.
When fire missions were going on most of those soldiers were not in full kit. The most they wore was the eye pro, ACH, and gloves. Most of the NCOs i knew back then basically said it makes no sense to have all this weight on when we need to move fast to get rounds down range. If were to get attacked, it wouldn't come from small arms, it would come from the air and if were getting mortared or shelled, no vest or plate is going to save us.
So they basically wore that stuff when the higher ups were coming around.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of Vietnam war FA where they were wearing shirts let alone full kit. Anyway, like most things when the pencil pushers aren’t around different rules apply
What do you do if you "dig in" your howitzer? If you dug it in like to muzzle level, like 6feet gun pit with sand bags and a cammo net ;would it alter all your coordinates and range parameters?A howitzer "dug in" survives hostile fire better than one that isn't.
Today with basically every major army fielding artillery radar that would be very unpractical due to counter-battery fire
can't really shoot and scoot in that kind of situation which is key in a battlefield full of drones.
the advent of drones has completely changed the landscape of the modern battlefield putting even artillery units at risk
Yes, towed guns are very vulnerable. In extreme environments, a crew would fire a Salvo, load up the howitzer and drive to a new position and repeat.
Went to fort sill for school house in 2014. Ended up at 29 stumps.
Wow thats very impressive
Ugh, fort sill, that place sucks, all I remember is the constant wind like 24/7
This guy defitinly got his e7 promotion incoming after this.
So, these days, the Assistant Gunner is responsible for loading the 105 mm round and then closing the breechblock?! How come the RTO is sitting near the Gunner? Shouldn’t he be sitting in the back of an M1038 Humvee, instead? Both AN/PRC 77 and DR-8-A are replaced with the so-called “Sled.” How convenient. “Fire Control Computer” and “Gunner Display Screen” are something new (for me). Even in this digital age, that M2 Collimator must be here to stay. SSG Driscoll forgot to mention M119 - with powder charge 7, the maximum range is 17,500 meters, with powder charge 8 + RAP (Rocket Assisted Power), the maximum range is 19,500 meters. By the way, is that FP 240?
Still use call signs muleskinner or bulldog?
Attack the D point!
Never ask an artillery officer where he is at.
Infantry says it sucks here Arty says it sucks here let's make it suck way over there

Great to learn from a true professional. We need these guys in Ukraine ASAP!
Let’s be realistic, that plate doesn’t really do anything, it’s like putting on one piece of armour with one luck state but you need the other set to really see different. Sure that plate might protect your major organ but the lower half of your belly and the side of the abdominal area all expose and if you get shot in any of those spot you’re going down instantly still. Idk is it really worth the extra weight, I guess is what I’m wondering.
Modern body armour *is supposed to protect the vitals, the stuff that you'd die in

Nothing is 'free'. This is part of keeping us free from those awful Canadians. I mean Russians.
If you want free health care all you gotta do is sign the dotted line
Just wondering if our enemies watch these same videos.
I'm sure they do, and vice versa. But I guess the calculus is provide good boots-on-ground information to civ's in the US and allied countries vs leaking some procedural steps from a training environment.
The business of death and dying, i see.
Great video idea. Terrible sound design choice. The screeching text pop up made me stop watching after a minute.
This just shows me why i like the Air force and Navy more then the US army. You need less people to fly a Plane and a lot of things can be automated or Optionally manned. and These land based weapon don't have that option.
This seems a lot more complicated and time consuming then i imagined. and requires a lot of people to man this equipment. but it's light and can be transported easily. but Can't a Suicide Drone just destroy this equipment since it can't move quickly away from a drone? and This would require 10S of thousands of shells i don't know per day or very often and i don't know if the US can keep up with that kind of Artillery fighting..
As of March 2024, the US is producing around 28,000 155 mm rounds per month, with plans to increase production to 70,000-80,000 rounds per month by the end of 2024. However, the US may not be able to meet its ammunition production goals without additional funding. The Army plans to increase production to 60,000 rounds per month in 2024, 80,000 per month in 2025, and 100,000 per month in early 2026. The Army is investing in government-owned munitions plants, including a $1.5 billion investment in shells to increase production capacity.
The US has a limited number of M119 howitzers, which are 105 mm howitzers that are effective for light units. The M119 has a shorter range and less explosive power than the larger 155 mm caliber, and it has limited projectile types. The M119 fires standard NATO semi-fixed ammunition, including the M1 (HE) High Explosive projectile with a range of 11.5 km (7.1 mi) and the M60 (WP) White Phosphorus smoke generating projectile with a range of 15.1 km (9.4 mi).
Where did you copy and paste this from? It’s all wrong 😂
Yeah but planes require more specialized training (pilots, weapons officers if a two seater) are generally more vulnerable to AA systems and if an accident happens, that's billions of dollars down the drain and dead specialized military personnel.
@@squeaky206 You know No one can shot down a F-35 or B-2 Bomber. I would rather fly in a F-35 then a Stupuid tank on the ground. and being in a Specialized Field means you're smart and can handle it. Driving a tank is something any idiot can do which is why they join the US army in the first place. even the United States Marine Corps has F-35 and The US navy has them too. The US army has no Fighter jets which is why the US army is Old and I wish optionally manned Tanks existed but they don't.
@@squeaky206 Have you seen Master of the Air? and those cool guys flying planes? i refuse to join the Military unless you let me fiy Air planes at least Submarines. i refuse to drive a Tank or do artillery bullshit on the ground.

Israel doesn’t use artillery in Gaza
2024: No optic, Condor PC, doesn't put on ears because he wants to "be able to hear and talk to people." Come on, Dude.
Blame the army for supplying trash. 1) artillerymen don't really need optics on their weapons 2) if anyone should be issued world class electronic hearing protection, it's artillerymen, and he's not issued any, that's the Army's problem.
@@personalaccount8914we get optics dude. PL, Smoke and Chiefs get acogs usually
Why would you need an optic on a weapon you wont shoot in bootcamp lol, at their units they'll have optics. Also have you seen the way people set up their kits in the arty community? Depending on your billet only the most junior will have spaces for mags on their PC.
This is a training unit lol. Why would they need optics for their weapons? And why does he need a fancy PC? As far as ear protection, a lot of artillery men don’t wear them because yes you need to be able to hear what’s going on around you. Blame the army for not giving them nice ear protection that lets you hear voices but mutes everything else
@@Milk-Soda there’s been many fire missions where I didn’t have time to grab earpro while down range.

Not serving a tyrant
too many women on that gun.
Weird how manual it is....weird...I can think of tons of consolidation and automation. Did they just manually pick it up in this day and age? 😂very bad design. Uh why can't they pre-make the bullet rounds instead of manually load, in fact, it can automatically load...design looks like it was done in the 90s
When you replace a person with a complex machine with moving parts and digital computers, you get mechanical and electronic failure, and you get a useless piece of equipment. More maintenance, more weight, more logistical support needed, more money spent.
The fact you give the 90s as a reference to old technology says everything about your lack of understanding.
From say, 8 kilometers from the target to 17 kilometers to the next target, the shells need different charges. If they all had maximum charge, shorter range shooting might be pointing the gun barrel almost straight up to the point the shell would be in the air a long time.A skeleton crew can get the gun shooting OK if they have to.Towed artillery can get into and out of areas that self propelled howitzers can`t.There is plenty of automation in the army and self propelled guns are quite large and expensive to operate and maintain and they make big juicy targets. It`s not weird it`s common sense.
Too relaxed, why is there a guy sitting in a chair ?!
Too many people in one spot
Needs to be 2-3 people on one artillery piece not 15

Ukraine conflict showed us that how vulnerable static artillery pieces are....
Neither Ukraine nor Russia controls the airspace. These towed artillery pieces wouldn`t be used much in this kind of a war without air defenses able to protect the gun and it`s crew.I`m not sure how many 105 mm howitzers the USA employs in most war games. They sure wouldn`t be doing it like Ukraine and Russia seems to be doing.
