      @@habibasharawy1643 I'm sure there's one out there somewhere :) I've seen similar observations in books by authors like Tamora Pierce and Mercedes Lackey. they're both outside of the Romance genre, though -- Tamora Pierce is YA fantasy, and Mercedes Lackey is regular fantasy. Also, bit of a warning on the latter: her books espouse some *cough* outdated views on mental health, and protagonists use frankly abusive tactics sometimes, which are then shown as *working.*

      In a lot of Gothic romance, the love interest isn't even the horrible one - often BOTH love interests are attacked by a curse or evil family member or just the general atmosphere of the house . . . In cases where you DO get a questionable Gothic love interest, he is probably the MC's employer or neighbour with a dark secret, not a ghost.

    • @cmm5542
      @cmm5542 10 месяцев назад +116

      @@riyatyagi8358The Bronte sisters and Daphne du Maurier are the classics. Jane Austen's Gothic spoof Northanger Abbey has a long list of older and less well-known 'horrid' tales but I haven't gotten to them yet so don't know how good they are. I started 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' but got bored as there's several chapters of happy serenity before the Gothic hits, and I did not have time! It might have been worth it if I'd stuck it out.
      Rebecca (by du Maurier) is definitely my favourite. And 20th rather than 19th century language for those who are not into that. My knowledge of contemporary Gothic lit is limited to short stories.
      Lots of people claim Dracula is Gothic, but I think it's more supernatural horror. His castle IS Gothic though.

      To me, it sounded like the witch king. So this girl in a fae kingdom is born a witch and it's found that her perfect ideal match is the fae prince only in the kingdom the witches are seen as less than even though their parents can be fae and whether or not a child will be a witch or fae is a toss up until the child is born. The witch, who is now known as Wyatt, is trans. Wyatt ran away and lived with mortals for a time, and Caleb, the prince, came and fetched him back to get married. Long story short, they end up falling in love and getting married. The book is amazing and touches on a lot of issues

      In the acotar series the fae lord saves the main character and her family from poverty but he turns out to be pretty awful and the supposed antagonist (also a fae lord) who murders a bunch of innocent people and roofies her to forget some pretty horrible nights actually turns out to be the good guy. • @gwendolynrobinson3900
      @gwendolynrobinson3900 11 месяцев назад +29

      Not the original Leroux novel, which was a horror, but the many more recent adaptations are either tragic romances or full on romances, of the gothic subgenre. I haven't read the Susan Kay novel (i ordered it online last night actually) but I think that one might lean more romantic

    • @raf015_2
      @raf015_2 10 месяцев назад +17

      @gwendolynrobinson3900 The original novel is not a horror novel, it's a mix between an mystery novel and a gothic romance.
      People always assume it was originally a horror novel because of the more-accurate-to-the-book 1925 silent movie that made the Phantom into one of Universal Monsters, because Erik's face and attitude are even worse in the novel.

    • @DelilahUnknown
      @DelilahUnknown 9 месяцев назад +8

      The Leroux book is more mystery/detective than romantic. POTO is public domain so there's many books that go towards the gothic romance! Susan Kay's focuses more on Erik/The Phantom backstory with romance at the end. My old POTO forum days though, many agreed Susan Kay wrote a good book until the ending where it got super weird OOC super quick. 😂 Kinda like fanfiction. There's also a VARIETY of adaptions. My favorite is the Charles Dance TV movie. The Christine is probably the most hated of all time, but besides that, it was a unique adaption of the book and Charles Dance was very charming in it.

      @@gwendolynrobinson3900 The Susan Kay book is unreal! I loved that one back in HS -- she really endeavors to give both Erik and the Daroga ("The Persian") proper individual backstories, to say nothing of giving Erik a legit source of self-medication. Definitely one of the best modern retellings I've seen since the ALW stage show. 😁
