***ANOTHER NEW UPDATE*** a significant patch dropped which gave reptile a lot more options. Everything in this guide still applicable, but check the video description for the patch notes video to see all the new stuff reptile can do! ****MAJOR UPDATE**** There has been a patch which has improved reptile! EX invisibility now does something, you turn invisible much faster, and across the board all combos that use force ball do more damage across the board as damage scaling has been relaxed! So basically, reptile is even better than I present him in this video, good stuff! Here we are with another Starter Guide for Mortal Kombat 1, this time featuring Reptile! Everything you need to know in one place from whats strong about the character, bread and butter combos, Kameo tactics & more! This guide should be plenty to get you started on your Reptile journey and hope it helps!
Late night upload cause my sleep schedule is a wreck but I didn't wanna put this off til tomorrow lol. Likes greatly appreciated! Reptile isn't the best, but he's a far cry from the bottom tier people say he is, and hopefully this can open your eyes to some of that!
Additional notes from a dedicated Reptile main: 1: Reptile can use EX Elbow Dash (BF2) instead of the F211 and F311 ender to mess with the enemy's flawless block timing. 2: F23 is generally used to fill combos due to its greater damage, while 23 is used for specific pickups (like after a fully charged B2) and antiairs, on top of the specific punishes that Roofle pointed out. 3: 114 is a safe jabstring that will start combos in the corner. A simple pickup is 1 ~ Force Ball > 4 ~ Slow Force Ball > J233 ~ Belly Flop. 4: Force Ball has an outer layer that only deals damage - the pop and the blockstun come from the inner nucleus. It's also a hilariously powerful move for midrange space control, being plus when done at a distance while giving superb reward on hit. 5: Use F31 to punish moves that are unsafe, but create significant distance on block (such as Raiden's EX fly). 6: Hold B2 to kara cancel into Death Roll, Invisibility, Acid Spit, or Fatal Blow (the same collection as the F32 cancels).
#6 is really important, especially since it gives him an overhead/low mixup with death roll, but I can't get it to trigger at all. Only gotten acid spit to work a few times. I am playing on keyboard and have tried all the input timing settings, but I don't think that's the issue.
It's always a good day when Rooflemonger uploads a character guide for your main. Hopefully this will get people to understand that Reptile is definitely not a bad character and has good things going for him
I don't think anybody who knows what they're talking about thinks he's bad, just too honest in a dishonest meta. As a reptile main as well it frustrates me to actually have to play the game and open people up with solid neutral and mind games, while playing against half the roster and they just mindlessly impose their will and just use their build in mix ups or cheap tools to just get similar or better results without much guess work. I personally like it that way tho. When I start stomping people with him I'll know it's cause I've gotten fundamentally good and I'm not just crutching on my character.
@@Metabolica1 Yeah, I'm getting exactly the same vibe from MK1 Reptile as I am from SF6 Ryu (who, funny enough, are my fav MK & SF characters, maybe that says something about me, should probably make a vid about that in the future), but I need to try the game out still as I honestly haven't had the chance yet! :)
@@Nephetssingsyou mean like how all the pros rate sub zero as the worst in the game and yet he just won an entire tournament by coming through the losers bracket to reset and then win grand finals? Yeah man pros know everything!
I can honestly say that I look forward to your ultimate guide videos because of your detailed analysis on said character/s. I appreciate the time and effort that you put into your videos. Thank you, Good sir!
Your breakdowns, guides, and commentary are the best. IMO. For an enthusiastic causal with limited time to practice the way I would like. Your content is the most accessible for me. Thank you. I click anything (MK) that you release.
As a Reptile main, a tip I'd say to be extra tricky is using that slow ex forceball as a dhalsim fireball. Pop it and run up to the opponent, most Mk players online don't know how to deal with the pressure. With his overheads and lows too you can typically pick them off
I was hoping you figured it out, but S3 also makes reptile technically "airborne" and when you are in the air you can cancel into special moves! so when you whiff S3 well outside it's range you cancel into fang drop which can move you forward or catch anyone ducking the high.
What I get for commenting before the video's over. So a couple big whiffs (pun intended), but overall great, didn't realize you can combo into S2 off air 233 like that in the corner. 1) EX slow forceball lasts FOREVER, if you need to get in or force a mixup EX slow forceball will creep about as far as a normal fast forceball and could cover a fully charged B2. and 2) B2! kinda surprised this didn't have it's own section. There are 3 versions of B2. Tap 2 and you'll get the fastest one, 12-14 frame OH I think, similar to Reiko's overhead, hold it for a little and you'll slightly transform Reptile's arms and get a nice splat on hit and plenty of advantage. the fully held B2 bounces and leads to a combo, but 23 is the only reliable followup I've found and is hard to hit after max range charged b2. You can also cancel the charge animation into death roll for a mixup, or a cheeky invisibility if you've conditioned them to not move.
As someone who picked up this game on a whim because reptile looked cool... i am completely lost in the 1 2 3 4 parts, but this is a lot of cool information, thanks for putting in so much effort
This guy has some of the best guides out there for sure and now i am going off topic but i can't be the only one who finds it weird that the mk women fight while wearing high heels right?
no bar, reptile and sonya kameo can get you an easy 409-452 damaga no bar with 3 diff combo starters and only 1 sonya kameo use. Underrated combination and easy-ish to pull off
A lot of time was spent in his combos, but I guess you wanted to belabor the point that though Reptile's forceball has a lot of damage scaling, he can still get self-sufficient damage. I personally like the examples you showed with the Scorpion and Sub-Zero Kameos allowing Reptile to set up and use his invisibility to it's full potential. As mentioned in the video, Sub-Zero's cold shoulder assist is a nice reversal to make up for Reptile's slower armored EX death roll.
your Mk1 guides are so Amazing I cant even stress that enough I am a new player to online play and you have helped so much just wanted to thank you for showing me da way!!! love your vids And need more jaja
I can’t remember if it was said in the video, but you can cancel the first hit of standing 3 with falling fang. The opening frames of standing 3 counts as Reptile being in mid air. This works regardless if it actually hits or not as well. Also a random mix to throw the opponent’s game off that I like is doing is back 313 and on block you can do meter burned bf2. Sometimes you catch them sleeping and not blocking overhead.
PLEASE do a rain tutorial , this video got me well accuainted with the mechanics of mortal kombat 1 and taught me combos and strings. Id really love to see you do a tutorial on rain kenshi smoke and just more characters overall, DEF CHECKING OUT YOUR MILEENA
When it comes to kameo selection, Sektor fits in quite similiar fashion as stryker, as he can fire missiles at any time, so that he can protect you after some yolo dashes or rolls
On the stryker kameo part, I don’t think yolo dash with grenade is a good thing to throw out since you’re gonna at least eat an uppercut and you don’t get combo if the grenade hits the opponent, not worth the trade imo.
Awesome video & guide Roof !!! Been running with Reptile all week. Question, has anyone noticed while in invasions mode at Wu Shi Academy while in the practice portal it seems that a lot of things that should connect, do not. Anyone else confirm ? Thanks
with reptile that is the beauty, you don't have to. Just get in sweep distance and its basically on them to do the rest. Your sweep is one of the best bully tools in the game
Any advice to not accidentally pressing the wrong buttons, cause I'm struggling to do combos and it's mainly cause I accidentally hit the wrong button.I just have the mindset gotta be fast so my fingers tend to just slip I guess even though I've been gaming for a decade I just can't get the handles of these type of games.
So on Reptile’s ex invisibility- I thought I saw a video showing that the ex version lasts longer in terms of specifically when you hit an opponent. Something like you only get one mix say doing the overhead or the sweep, but you get to mix them again on wake-up once more if you ex the invis. Is that worth? Probably not, but just something I’d be curious to verify the validity of.
Dude, that first combo… just how? Im practicing for at least one hour and i cant for the life of me juggle high enough with the second ball, that WHEN i manage to dash F2 DF3
My issue with Reptile is that he doesn't have mixup or string variety. Damage is great. Aesthetics are great. Mixups and strings? That makes your entire set predictable. Predictable = Blockable. Blockable = bad.

Design wise they really did justice to reptile imo. His animations especially the ones where only a part of him morphs are awesome.

Kung Lao’s air teleport into the croc drop is a good way to catch enemies off guard

One fun tidbit for Falling Fangs, you can hit it off of stand 3. :)

I wish i could take acid spit off my movelist. I hit it by accident all the time.
For me im a watch honeybee he makes the character looks strong even with some short comings
Well this guide gave me the push to take him for a spin…keep them coming
Reptile is basically "Big green ball go boom"
Csn you do a video about up blocking strings i feel like its an under utilized mechanic that not a lot if people do
BUFF REPTILE! Too honest
I’m trying to sleep, “Hello and welcome!”, proceed to piss myself and have a seizure, wake up, and my Reptile is better for some unknown reason.
Standing 3 can be special cancel to the teleport attack
Reptile the invisi-blessed. Wonder how many will remember this reference

Hi, I have an issue with the green ball attack in mid combo, it always does another attack in which shots toxic to the rival instead of doing the ball
Can someone explain what a reversal is? I’m struggling to understand what it is.
So on Reptile’s ex invisibility-
I thought I saw a video showing that the ex version lasts longer in terms of specifically when you hit an opponent. Something like you only get one mix say doing the overhead or the sweep, but you get to mix them again on wake-up once more if you ex the invis. Is that worth? Probably not, but just something I’d be curious to verify the validity of.
Shang Tsung please ❤
Dude, that first combo… just how? Im practicing for at least one hour and i cant for the life of me juggle high enough with the second ball, that WHEN i manage to dash F2 DF3
Why does nobody use Kano with him or maybe sektor, what am I missing,
Can we get a rain guide?
Scaly Boi
nerf Reptile, buff Sub Zero
now do smoke pls!
Aye what do we think abt a mileena guide
Oh wait there is one lmao
Reptiles spit really needs DoT
Forceball goes through ice klone, this got to be fixed at some point
Force Ball has two hits (the inner and outer ball), Ice Klone only absorbs one. After passing through the Ice Klone, the outer layer disappears.
I really wish they fix the spit or do something with it or something, it's so useless
18:00 is still armored?
they never said they took it away so id have to assume
He just really needs a 6 framer
I can’t get that combo to work for shit first one
My issue with Reptile is that he doesn't have mixup or string variety.
Damage is great.
Aesthetics are great.
Mixups and strings? That makes your entire set predictable.
Predictable = Blockable.
Blockable = bad.
