- Everyone who lives in Kailua Kona, lives on the side of Hualalai volcano on Hawaii Island. BUT, hardly anyone gets to go up and see what the top looks like, as it is private land. The only way to go, legally, is to hire a guide or go with a tour company. So, we did! We have been wanting to hike on the volcano for years, always looking up to the summit, wondering what is it like at the top. It is amazing, vast, rugged, and full of deep craters, only hinting at the various eruptions that this volcano has experienced in the past 1000 years.
The tour we took can be booked at www.uluhao.com
Plant a tree, give back to the island, take part in carbon offset and regenerative tourism. And take photos..because it truly an amazing and special place!

Bucket list for sure!! Lovely video and continue to love the way you pay homage to the Island!
Loved this video. Thank you!
Excellent video and I really liked the narration.
Such an amazing tour. Thank you for taking us.
All the times I've been to Kona I wondered what it would be like to be up on Hualalai. The first time the plane landed on a trip I took only because my wife wanted -- and bargained HARD to get -- within minutes the place had the feeling of "home." I've often looked up the slope. Maybe someday...
.. How about that . Next trip for sure . Thanks for sharing ..
This is awesome on so many levels! Thank you so much for taking us on this tour with you. I always wanted to go up there when I lived in Kona and off of Kaloko Drive but never did. The drone shots are absolutely incredible and so is that beautiful mauna. I just hope she stays dormant in our lifetimes. Mahalo!!!❤💛💙💜
❤👍🏻
Greetings from Toronto Canada. Thank you for this video. We did not know about this really authentic opportunity. This is why we love the Big Island We booked today. Can hardly wait until March 7. Thanks 365!
Thanks for sharing.
This one is on the bucket list. Great video.
i am *delighted* that you finally did this - it is something I have literally dreamt of since visiting the island in 2020. To me, while Hualalai is an undiscovered treasure to most tourists, the current permissions system for access will guarantee the stewardship of this mauna for generations to come
We did this hike on Thanksgiving this year - so special, and highly recommended for Kona residents!
Thank you for this video. I've wondered about access to this spectacular area. Heading to the North Kohala coast next summer, and just might check it out!
Absolutely a beautiful crater. Thank you for sharing your tour.
Where can we find the website to donate a tree for the land to plant?
This is such an enlightened video for fans and residents of Kailua Kona. The tour's appreciation of nature and views from the summit of Hualalai are wonderful. We'll definitely plan to take the tour, and really appreciate Eric and Julie to recognize the tour and share it. Keep up the good work. Mahalo.
Thank you for this kind comment!
We finally were able to join Kimo on this "hike" yesterday - - much more than a hike It was rainy and cloudy on the 7th and we rescheduled to yesterday - - a glorious sunny day with no clouds which we learned was very rare on Hualālai. We could see North Kohala, Maui, Lanai, Maunakea and Mauna Loa along and a cruise ship in Kailua Bay, the first which we have seen in two weeks.
We were also blessed to have Scott, a part-time resident of Kona, as part of group. You could say we had two guides. The last time that he was on the mountain was 50 years ago having grown up here. We were a front row "audience" to a conversation about what has changed for the last 50 days. We learned so much from both Kimo and Scott.
And we also planted a Koa tree.
This was an experience which we will never forget and would highly recommend it to you.
