I don't know if you know it or not but Raimi invented a bunch of the camera techniques you see in the film. The technique used for the "first person demon cam" that chases Ash is incredibly simple for it's amazing effect.
www.pinterest.com/pin/45317539972792165/
Original Ending should be on RUclips, it was on the VHS growing up and imo is better. He gets the book and is told to drink ten drops of a potion to sleep until he's in his present time.
And as the audience you see Ash screwed up the count and took eleven drops not ten when counting and he sleeps too long. And ends up waking in the far future where everything is destroyed and barren.
It was more comedic and in line with Ash being a co stant screw up, but the studio wanted a happier ending so he had the SMart scene at the end
@@stevetoth7136 Yeah, that was a much funnier ending!
Can't wait till Ash Vs Evil Dead is on your list, definitely going to push for you to see this classic show
hope at some point you can react to the movie Hanna (2011) the score is so good in it! thanks for the reactions :D
Fun Fact:
The movie was originally going to be called MEDIEVAL DEAD, which is a way better title in my opinion.
That’s honestly pretty badass hahaha
I wish I didn’t know this because now it’s all I’ll ever see it as
Probably figured a large proportion of the demographic wouldn't know what medieval meant...🤔😅
Would've been a better wordplay to tie it to the original two. But irregardless of its name it would've been a cult classic anyhow.
@@Dilligff thank Dino DeLaurentis for the title change.
His blocking the skeleton's eyepoke only to get eyepoked from both sides off screen is probably one of my favorite physical gags of all time, and I don't know why
3 stooges.
hahaha yeah
I just watched it today for the 1st time and that part had me DYING. I had tears bruh
3 stooges
Well then there's around 3 stooges I know that you should look into.
And remember, shop smart. Shop S-Mart. YA GOT THAT!? 😆😜
😂😂😭
Fancy seeing you here.
"Lady I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave." gets me EVERY time.
Yo shebitch...let's go!
The names Ash....... housewares!!!!!!!
This is literally my first time discovering that there was a different ending to this film than the one I saw (the one in which Ash "slept too long").
Suddenly, the premise of Ash vs. Evil Dead makes a whole lot more sense.
Well in the comics they sorta retcon that, saying that ash had gone through this process to get back home multiple times, dipping into the multiverse with Sam ramis approval 'kinda makes sense'. And that's why in ash v the evil Dead he is fuzzy on details because he can't fully remember which event or when that event happened, or if it even happened at all. So the confusion of events between movies is more like the movies are from ashes perspective. Not what fully happened but from what ash remembers how things went down. Sam Rami is a sly ol dog man.
This is a masterpiece in its own right. The hilarity, the Sam Raimi effects, the story was what I always looked for in a "horror" movie. I can't get enough of this one.
He’s a legend behind the camera!
I remember seeing this in the theater with my friends. What made it even better was we all thought it was going to be a serious horror movie... That just made it even better and funnier.
Yeah this was a good trip xD
It was the first movie I've seen in a theater.
It was the first DVD I bought.
"Really cool, despite it feeling campy" is the definition of Bruce Campbell and why he's got a cult following. Read the book 'If Chins Could Talk', its by him.
@@ramboonacid8366 you're right. It was maybe an hour later and i thought 'crap I typed the wrong word'.
I've only seen a couple of his movies, but Jack of all Trades was amazing
when i realized sam from burn notice was the same actor as ash from the evil dead i was soooo happy. one of my favorite tv shows & one of the greatest horror franchises in history!
Now you are ready for the TV show. 😁
which does not disappoint. phenomenal.
I love this trilogy. No offense maybe just me.. The shows aren't that great. I'd prefer he reacted to umm show wise better? I really hope he doesn't waste his time on it.
@@ZERXERZANZIGER yeah the show was just okay, not as amazing as the movies and just silly gore for silliness sake IMO
@@IDieHardForever My only nitpick was season 2. It was all over the place. Just a bit.
@@wujumbo2480 ya know what... you right. that's about where i dropped off. so season 1 is phenom!
The first movie's my favorite for so many reasons
1. Creative & comedic cinematography
2. Dramatic reactions & interactions
3. Bruce Campbell's hair
4. The use of space in a small set
5. Subtle, seemingly unintentional humor
6. The implication made by Ash's menacing expression in the opening close up that he's gonna 1v1 an evil entity and probably win
Interesting thing about the plate mail hand, Rami found out about a real life historical figure Götz von Berlichingen who had his sword hand cut off during a siege and had it replaced with an actual iron hand which he could articulate by pushing the fingers in place with his left hand. This figure was also known as Götz of the Iron Hand and was also the inspiration for Berserk.
Now you know why so many wanted you to do this one. Army of Darkness tends to be a favorite because it's got the humor and is so very quotable.
Your gonna love the show also check out bubba hotep with Bruce
Bubbba HoTep for sure.
YESSSS
+1 for Bubba HoTep - terribly underrated film
That's a great movie!
Good? Bad?
I'm the guy with the gun.
😂😂😂
Mr lil goody two shoes... Mr lil goody two shoes... BANG
Best line out of a movie with great lines.
THERE IS AN ALTERNATE ENDING TO THIS FILM WHERE HE WAKES IN A POST APOCALIPTIC LONDON
Dude, why tell him what the ending is, and not just tell him "there's an alternative ending, go watch it"?
I know there's not a lot to it but why ruin the fun?
Actually the apocalyptic ending is the original ending. The S-Mart ending is the alternative ending for US markets.
@@thestarglider The S-Mart is the canon ending though. But the apocalytic ending still "exists" so to say in the universe.
@@theTaNKisnowhere Probably b/c alternate endings usually suck and most reactors don't bother.
I love how Ash can deal with evil sprits from beyond the grave with no problem, but can't remember three lousy words
This is my BOOM STICK!!
BOOM STICK!!
In his autobiography, Bruce said that a fan at a convention once presented him with a professionally airbrushed pair of briefs with a picture of Ash, and that motto on the front. His wife will not let him wear them to bed.
Hail to the King, Baby! 🤘🏽
That shot of the chainsaw and Ash linking up, is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
Evil Dead 2 is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time, but I always seem to come back to Army of Darkness when I’ve had a bad day.
Saw Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness in theatres when it came out. Scary, funny, wild and so innovative. Evil Dead 2 is probably my favorite for the good mix of intensity and fun. Love all three of them. Too many great moments to pick a favorite.
Love this trilogy, army of darkness is my favorite, its fun as hell.
"Braindead" by Peter Jackson plz
Yeah, this is like the closest thing to Evil Dead that isn't Evil Dead. He's got to watch this.
FUCK I was going to say that
Bad Taste is great too
Oh yes, indeed
YESSS
You just saw the theatrical version that had the good ending, when he returns to his own time. In the original ending, Ash accidently/clumsy take 7 drops instead of 6 drops from a magical potion so he can sleep through time and wake up in his own time. Because of this, he wakes up in a post apocalyptic future. Ash's line in that one; No...no... I SLEPT TO LONG! (Laughs maniacally). The test audience didn't like the original bad ending because they thought it was to depressing, so they had to make a new ending, which is the good theatrical ending. You can get a copy with the original bad ending, but there's also one on DVD and Blu Ray that has both of them, you can even youtube the bad ending and check it out for yourself =) You can also youtube the deleted scenes and a behind the scenes documentary called Medieval Times - The Making of Army of Darkness.
'Drag me to Hell' is a great later horror by Sam Raimi it's much more polished but still has many of the same elements as Evil Dead and it's great fun!
second this
Great movie, and a return of Raimi to horror
I love that movie
Love Drag Me to Hell. When it came it it felt like the first movie since Army of Darkness that mastered Slapstick Horror. Sam Raimi is the best! And Alison Lohman is wonderful in it ✨
Bruce calls it Drag Me to Heck lol.
That movie was just a large one liner. And it was spectacular.
Army of Darkness is my favorite, but for personal reasons. When my niece was very young, before taking her trick or treating, I was watching this. She wanted to be brave and watch with me. This is the first movie we watched together where we both enjoyed. 20 yrs later we both still recommend movies to each other
Hahah that’s awesome!
"Klaatu barada nikto." Quote from the 1951 film "the day the earth stood still." (Better than the remake in my opinion).
@@susannariera I don't love Keanu Reeves

This comment is underrated.
Bro, I can't even IMAGINE you in a mood anywhere near that lol. It would have to be a hangover, after a break-up, after a job-loss, after a car wreck. You have got to be the chillest dude on RUclips.
Lmfaooo!! Honestly my brotha I’m a hella chill dude!
Great video james, really loved it, and I am glad you like this trilogy as much as you did
This is one of the best movies to see someone watch for the first time, love your channel already man
Happy to hear brother!!
You ought to check out Raimi’s previous film, “Darkman.” Raimi wanted to make The Shadow but couldn’t get the rights, so he created his own superhero character. And if I remember correctly it was one of Liam Neeson’s first leading roles.
You still need you some Hardcore Henry, James.
Stop sleeping on it.
Hardcore Henry was bonkers. I quite liked it.
This movie definitely influenced many a D&D group.
Bruce Cabell is amazing, one of the best slap stick artists.
Bruce Campbell was at Mad Minster Party in Charlotte NC a year or two ago. I inherited a coach gun from my granddad (barrels are just 2 inches longer - but otherwise it’s the exact same design).
I brought the stock with me and he autographed it and added “This is my Boom Stick”.
Easily the coolest autograph in my small collection 😁. He hosted a trivia contest that night. The guy is funny as hell!
A bit of trivia about how low budget the first Evil Dead movie was: the skeletal handle of the dagger was literally made from dinner leftovers. The cast and crew went out and bought fried chicken for dinner one night, and the prop maker saved the bones and fashioned them into the handle.
Army of Darkness was my favorite as it was my first of the series. Additionally, I was raised on Horror (Chucky and Hellraiser at 2yo), Raimi (Hercules/Xena), Rascals/Stooges (slapstick), Stallone (Rambo in particular) and Ray Harryhausen (Jason, Sinbad, Clash, etc. **less so Kong as I was more a Godzilla kid**). It had all the things I loved best. I can see why a Filmmaker would be most enamored with the original or how other fans would prefer the second (as I feel like that one is the only entry properly showing off what can be called a proper "Deadite").
My childhood ties into this genre (so an entry that ventures into another's territory gives it a chance to standout amonst the rest without my having to completely go outside that zone **as with Event Horizon for Sci-Fi**). Hell, my first memory of Moose Tracks ice cream is entirely tied to The People Under the Stairs (to a lesser extent, Phantasm). Before long I would encounter Duke (much to Bruce's chagrin) who apes his character (and steals his lines **even one from RRP**) to give me a DOOM alternative (Build Engine game) that takes itself less seriously (for me, DOOM is associated with Christmas).
The music somewhat reminds of Conan. Said franchise is apparently linked to Lovecraft's mythos (which is the origin of the book itself **something my younger self wouldn't look into for a long while**). An easy choice for an elective 'Film' course (among other times I chose it for an essay **just so I had something I was actually interested in to talk about**). ED:AoD is just an important film for me (and my favorite **not just of the series**).
I love the script of his one liner's like "give me some sugar baby". :-)
Me and my buddies watch this every year before Halloween. Some of the best one liners ever.
Why was "Hail to the King baby" such a rad line coming out of Bruce's mouth!!! 😆
Here's a factoid, the witch Ash kills was Patricia Tallman who played Barbara in the 90's remake of Night of the Living Dead, and was Laura Dern's stunt double in Jurassic Park.
I saw this as a rental as a kid...my younger brother picked it...he was 9 at the time...LOVED IT.
Loved watching this again along with you man, great reaction and comments, as always. This series is what first made me start noticing camera framing, angles and movement, back when I was still a teenager and I will forever be grateful for learning that insight back then - it immensely enhanced my appreciation and experience of movies ever since. It was great to see you point out exactly what mesmerised me so much all those years ago.
Since Christmas is coming soon could you react to some of these Christmas movies.
1. Gremlins
2. Christmas Vacation
3. The polar express
4. A Christmas Carol (2009)
5. Krampus
6. The wolf of snow hollow
7. Grinch(2000)
8. Elf
9. A nightmare before Christmas
And last Die Hard.
Happy early holidays james :D
awsome list ! might add jingle all the way to it with arni
@@iconocast shoot I forgot jingle all the way my bad.
@Johnny Cab forgive me i knew i forgot a couple of Christmas movies. I freaking forgot home alone
I personally like the George C Scott Christmas Carol
Great commentary as always... This movie is just spomething special... So campy yet so good... And Bruce Campbell, dont even get me started! So many quotable one-liners. "Well hello Mr. Fancypants" might be my favourite..
This is my favorite of the three and maybe one of my favorite movies ever. Action, Horror, Comedy, it has everything. I've seen this movie more times than I can count but it's still a great movie when I watch it
I love his ability to simultaneously play all three stooges.
"Bubba Hotep" with Bruce. Amazing movie. Amazing soundtrack. Ending makes my cry.
"The Burbs" with Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. I love it. Captures the burbs perfectly.
"Stand by Me", one of Stephen King's finest.
"Dead Alive" aka "Braindead" by Peter Jackson or one of his other splatter movies, "Bad Taste" and "Meet the Feebles"
"Falling Down" by Joel Schumacher, starring Michael Douglas.
They got those chase shots by strapping a camera to a board and running with it. Bruce talks about it in his memoir, "If Chins Could Kill".
this movie is so great. saw it as a kid when it was new. the skeletons are my fav. boom stick quote, the little minis everywhere. fun movie.
At one point in my life I had replaced all of my computer sounds, alerts, and tones with Bruce Campbell one-liners from this film.
So, I don't know if anyone said this already, but the tracking shot in the monster pov chase scenes are made by attaching a camera to a 12ft 2 x4. I'm sure in this film they had more stable equipment, but that's what they used since the first film -- camera on a pole.
You need to watch Bubba Ho-Tep for another campy fun horror with the Chin (Bruce Campbell).
Synopsis - After falling into a lengthy coma following a freak accident involving hip gyration, a now aged Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) wakes up in an East Texas nursing home, where he befriends Jack (Ossie Davis), an African-American senior who claims to be President John F. Kennedy. After residents of their quiet retirement community start dying of dubiously unnatural causes, Elvis and Jack discover that the perpetrator is Bubba Ho-Tep (Bob Ivy), an Egyptian mummy with murderous intentions.
The magic phrase "klaatu barada nikto" is a reference to the 1951 sci-fi classic "The Daythe Earth Stood Still".
One thing cool about this. This was made in 1992, and I am pretty sure this film and it's fantasy action/adventure/campy comedy setting is what inspired Both Sam Raimi and his long time collaborator producer best friend Rob Tapert to make both of the Hercules and Xena tv series 3 years later. Which by the way had Bruce Campbell as the reoccurring character Autolycus.
Love this film watch it with my best friend once a year.
Kind of similar is Hansel and Gretel the witch hunters.
Good movies to react to Donnie Brasco, Assassination of Jesse James and Drive.
Just when I'm about to submit my final essay. Perfect timing, James.
Happy to hear it Alex!!
The TV show has the same feeling as this movie, and it’s great
The craziest part is to remember that Evil Dead II was on Friday night after work, the ending of this movie is that Monday morning when he has to go back to work.
It was the first Evil Dead I watched back in the day. It scared the hell out of me as a child.
It's truly a live-action comic book/cartoon. So much fun
Sam Rami is one of my favorite directors. He’s campy but still very creative with his techniques.
This is my favourite. I still start laughing about little goody two shoos, and I haven't seen this movie in 20years or more 😂
I'm convinced that Bruce Campbell is not human... I believe he's a cartoon xDDD
this movie... I watched it back in the day in a theater, it was great. It's not absolutely perfect (maybe it's too long), but there's some crazy entertaining parts, constant homages to old movies... the phrase 'Klaatu Barada Nikto' is a homage to The Day the Earth Stood Still, for instance, and the skeleton army is a homage to the wonders the late great Ray Harryhausen created in stop-motion.
This wonderful movie became a classic in its own right
One of the best American isekais. I love how slapstick Raimi and Campbell get in this one, and all of Ash's quips are on point. I also love all the adr deadites and the comedic foley work in the 3rd act.
If you didn't know, the Klaatu Verata Nikto line is from The Day The Earth Stood Still (the original). A classic.
Also, did you catch the Bridget Fonda cameo in the ED2 recap as a recast Linda?
Super slapstick but it’s incredibly shot!
If you're a Bruce fan he had several shows in the 90s. A recurring character in Hercules, and Xena. Starred in the sci-fi western Brisco County Jr. and colonial exploration era Jack of All Trades. Im skipping over a bunch of equally great movies and stuff forward to the spy thriller Burn Notice, which is one of my favorite shows of all time, and his supporting/ starring role is perfect. Even if you don't react to them, they're all worth checking out... side note: Burn Notice would make for some good content for your channel with the constant cat and mouse & twists & whatnot. You could dedicate 1 day a week to Bruce Campbell and have content for years.
army of darkness def my fav out of all of them and the mini ash scene my fav in it. growing up with this it still hasnt aged bad
hi hello can you react to Sorry To Bother You? it’s hilarious and has a massive plot twist (93% rotten tomatoes btw)
I can add it to future patreon polls!
I just love them all for different reasons each.:)
Bruce Campbell is the finest man to grace a silver screen!
0:48 "Gun-Ho" is a fictional porn mag in Borderlands 1. "Gung-ho" is the expression.
Some of my favorite movies. Watched them as a kid w my uncle. Cemented horror comedy as a staple in my home❤❤
Hahaha sounds like a fun memory!
@@JamesVSCinema for sure! He and my grandparents showed me stuff i probably shouldnt have watched at a younger age but here we are haha
They weren't using green screens when this movie was made. Green screen is used in digital compositing. It would have been blue screens with an optical printer to complete the composite. That's why in the Christopher Reeves Superman film, his suit was green instead of blue.
My ranking: 2, Army, 1. 2 is perfection. Army is solid fun throughout. 1 is creatively groundbreaking. All of them are excellent.
The 3 season 30 episode tv series is outstanding.
Fun fact the car Ash drives is Sam Raimi's personal car and he has it in all his films, for example it was uncle Ben's car in the spider man films
The line he forgets when getting the book is a famous line from the film The Day The Earth Stood Still. If you haven't seen that (It hurts to think people haven't seen it) See it.
Saw this in the theatre. One of my favorite movies!
I remember seeing Sam Ramsay's Spider Man when it came out...great evening with awesome food at Gordon Raimi's restaurant ;P
Lmao!
I remember it exactly like this also..
Nice channel so far.
Now, you might also like Tucker and Dale vs Evil? (For horror comedy) or even better Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz?
Thanks for the content, keeping us not too bored. I'm liking the project, looking forward to more.
Another Sam Rami film from that era that probably helped him get the Spiderman job was a film called Darkman, which stars Liam Neeson in one of his earlier starring roles. There is also a very brief cameo of Bruce Campbell in that one.
The make up in Darkman is second to none. You have a hero that looks horribly disfigured is great stuff. I feel like today we have to make the hero sexy enough to get the girl, which is BS.
Hell, even in the Robocop remake they are pushing it so Robo is going to end up with the girl! He was basically Ironman who can't take his suite off. doesn't have the same impact as the 1987 classic where Murphy looks gross when he removes his helmet.
Another fire reaction from the master! Skeletons in stop motion. Who would've thought back in the day someone would do Jason and the Argonauts as a comedy? I seriously almost soiled myself the first time I saw the trampoline bit. Genius. If I had to pick one of the three movies as my favorites I'd say it was the second one. The first Evil Dead was straight horror, and this one was straight comedy. The second movie was the transition piece. It walked that fine line so brilliantly. If you have to call it something.....Incredibly original. Check out the reboot if you have a chance. I'm a purist myself, so as an overall movie it was alright, but straight up some of the best CGI I've ever seen. Okay, man. You talked me into it. I'm subscribin'. Can't wait for the next one!
one of my favorite movies of all time. I like this most out all of them.
Bruce Campbell is the coolest dude you could ever hope to meet. He is as funny as he is on screen
When it comes to the films, The Evil Dead (1981) Evil Dead 2 (1987) and Evil Dead (2013) are all tied for me. But I feel the absolute best thing is the tv show Ash vs Evil Dead (2015). it blends horror and humor PERFECTLY and gives fans more than they could ever want for.
I highly recommend binging it ASAP.
AvED is only 3 seasons, 10 episodes each, and each episode is only 30 mins. It's quite possibly the easiest show to binge ever made!
Stay Groovy!
You should watch the alternate ending to Army of Darkness. It’s on RUclips. I watched it on here a long time ago.
Another early 90s movie you might like that is less known is Falling Down. It’s about a guy who is fed up with society just trying to walk home after he gets tired of sitting in a traffic jam going to work in the morning. He gets into some interesting altercations with people in his journey. He says and does things we all think and feel but are too civil to actually do.
Watched your review on "Trainspotting" , also a few others. Like your content. Keep it up. Subbed.
Yeah, I dig this flick so much. Owned it on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray and Vudu.
My favorite of the series was probably Evil Dead 2. It introduced the intentional comedy, but was as over-the-top as Army of Darkness. I love them all though, and the series, lots of fun.
When a director and editor are feeling the mojo...you get this
Where did the shotgun come from? He didn't have it a moment ago. Did he hide it in his pocket dimension, known as Chinner-Space? Don't you love it that the actual, full title of the movie is "Bruce Campbell VS Army of Darkness"?
The Evil Dead trilogy has such an interesting evolution from straight horror in the first one, to a horror comedy in the second and a flat out action comedy by the time it hits Army of Darkness. Have to agree with you that the first is my favorite, just from a creativity standpoint, but I love Bruce Campbell's smarmy, assholish charm that is much more prevalent in the second and especially the third film
My favorite Bruce Campbell movie is "Bubba Hotep." A brilliant movie. Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley and Ossie Davis as JFK both in old age in a nursing home haunted by a mummy.
you have now only seen the captain supermarket ending and what seems to be the abridged version of the windmill scene.
You can tell Sam Rami was a fan of the three stooges with the mini Ash scenes , when i first saw this movie waaaaaaaay back in '93 , i could not ..stop .. laughing . Lmao .
The commentary is top notch as well. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have a very long working relationship and friendship and it's clear with this trilogy.
Don't forget Raimi did Darkman right before Army of Darkness, straight up comic book anti-hero. Worth a look for sure
The little people vs him is an ode to Gulliver's Travels and the people of Lilliput (may have spelled that wrong)
Fun Fact - The car "The Classic 88" is in every Sam Raimi movie and so is Bruce Campbell
I saw this in the theatre. People warned us that it was going to be terrifying.
The best way to sum up Sam Raimi's signature in film is how he uses the camera as another character. This is true for everything he touches... also the 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 in every film except The Quick and the Dead. hope I'm not too subtle with that suggestion. Also suggest finishing Ash's story with the television series, he's the action hero other action heroes wish they were. He isn't strong, smart, or talented, but he is a master of cool.
Great videos you're making, keep up the excellent work!
the effect of smoke in reverse is so fuckin cool
