At some point soon you really, really need to realise that the "7 professional reviews" formula absolutely doesn't work when looking at this era. Writers treated the rating scale very differently, most games didn't get column space at all, and of those that did, many reviews won't have made it to online aggregators. These lists are basically just objectively wrong.
Agree 100%. The only game on here that is arguably terrible is Lagoon and even that has it's defenders. This list is suspiciously lacking in liscensed games, makes sense as mags back in the day were a lot softer on bad games from good advertisers.

Darius Twin was an awesome game. Great graphics, music, was tough, and the controls were tight. How is this on the list? What magazine are you getting the list from? As other games magazines game this game 92%
I'd like to see an actual "Worst games of..." list. Basing it on ratings and only including games with at least 7 reviews really messes up the ranking. Here are some great games, like Super R-Type. It also had very favorable reviews and the main criticism were the slow downs. But the graphics and enemy designs were incredible and it was absolutely playable. I was a seven year old kid when I first played it and if I could handle the controls, an experienced player shouldn't have that much of a problem.
I don't remember 1991 being such an incredible year for video games that something as solid and enjoyable as Super R-Type makes the WORST of year list. That's absurd. A little first gen game slow down not withstanding, that's a good game.. Edit: And Darius Twin?!
Wooooow it's all lovable runts and busted classics this year! If you were forced to pick a year of Triple Jump worsts in a desert island situation, 1991 wouldn't be so bad.
I think Galaxy Force 2 is the only game I have owned that has featured in one of these lists. Easily my least favourite Megadrive game. It was absolutely terrible.
Now I know you have certain things you have to follow but I found games that are WAY WAY worse than some of the games that are in this list. Here's some fine examples: Fantasia Action 52 Darkman NES Beast Wrestler Bill and Ted NES Legend of Success Joe (worst NEO GEO game ever made) Jewel Master King of Kings (unlicensed NES) Bart vs the space mutants and Bart vs the World Total Recall NES
Me too. I can understand Americans referring to it as "Genesis" (for obvious reasons) but the last time I checked Triple Jump appeared to be British, unless the channel is trying to suck up to an American audience. Then again, Ashton referred to the ZX Spectrum as "Zee Ex Spectrum" in a video not too long ago and got picked up on it in the comments so this *might* be an attempt at trolling her fellow countrymen (and women...)
@@figureheaduk Wait, hold up, how else would one refer to the ZX Spectrum except by saying "Zee Ex Spectrum"? That's like saying "refer to the Genesis as 'gen-ih-sis.'" EDIT: Nevermind, I just remembered those wacky Brits typically pronounce the letter Z as "zed."
Are we absolutely sure these are the worst games of 1991 because Dark Castle was released for the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991 and I know for certain it’s far inferior than every game on this list.
Alien Storm was like Golden Axe if it was rewritten by a fan of sci-fi action movies. Both are fun side scrolling shooter games. Alien Storm improves upon Golden Axe with having more variety to the gameplay such as the first-person modes that you see when you go inside buildings. I always wanted to go inside buildings and fight monsters in Golden Axe, so I finally got my chance in this game. Alien Storm and the Golden Axe series were my favorite games on the Genesis at the time (which was when I was starting college). Yeah, I'm that old. Bonanza Bros and Fatal Labyrinth were indeed terrible games. I never really enjoyed playing those. Galaxy Force II is so terrible that I find it almost unplayable unless I play it on my New 3DS XL with the settings so that you don't actually die if your ship becomes terribly crippled. You just limp along through the rest of the game.
Nice list, but why just the consoles & PC games. There was still quite a bit of crap floating around on the 8 bit & 16 bit home micros that was possibly far worse than some of these games. Cisco Heat on C64 for example.
These games generally arent terrible. Again, the magazines that rated games this far back were very biased and were going on peoples opinions who werent really that experienced.

You need to do best worst licence games.
Buck Rogers countdown to doomsday has to be a contender
Bro I Always played Bonanza Bros. On my PS3 (Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection) as a kid I beaten so many time I can't count
Loved Alien Storm.
Thought it was great.
Repetitive yes . .
But still a lot of fun
The Galaxy Force arcade game was awesome back in those days.
posting about the worst games that came out the year i was born... on my birthday... thanks guys i didnt know you knew
Happy Birthday
@@bdt3367 thank ya
I'd like to see an actual "Worst games of..." list. Basing it on ratings and only including games with at least 7 reviews really messes up the ranking. Here are some great games, like Super R-Type. It also had very favorable reviews and the main criticism were the slow downs. But the graphics and enemy designs were incredible and it was absolutely playable. I was a seven year old kid when I first played it and if I could handle the controls, an experienced player shouldn't have that much of a problem.
I loved the OG Duke Nukem by Apogee
Alien Storm is a great game, also RIP Darius Danesh
I don't remember 1991 being such an incredible year for video games that something as solid and enjoyable as Super R-Type makes the WORST of year list. That's absurd. A little first gen game slow down not withstanding, that's a good game..
Edit: And Darius Twin?!
Seems odd in hindsight that a game like Alien Storm got such tepid reviews back then.
It’s considered one of the Genesis’s best games now!
After that opening cutscene, the mediocre and forgettable gameplay of Zero Wing really was a disappointment.
Wooooow it's all lovable runts and busted classics this year! If you were forced to pick a year of Triple Jump worsts in a desert island situation, 1991 wouldn't be so bad.
Lagoon was simply just a bad porting job by Kemco.
Now that we all know better, we can just download the translated version of the X68000 version.
91 was a good year for games if these are the worst of the year, I liked most of them
These are the games nobody would rent at Blockbuster. They had these but no Final Fantasy 3.
I think Galaxy Force 2 is the only game I have owned that has featured in one of these lists. Easily my least favourite Megadrive game. It was absolutely terrible.
Now I know you have certain things you have to follow but I found games that are WAY WAY worse than some of the games that are in this list. Here's some fine examples:
Fantasia
Action 52
Darkman NES
Beast Wrestler
Bill and Ted NES
Legend of Success Joe (worst NEO GEO game ever made)
Jewel Master
King of Kings (unlicensed NES)
Bart vs the space mutants and Bart vs the World
Total Recall NES
Let’s be honest here. Most of these titles aren’t really all that bad, they just haven’t aged well enough.
I know that the Sega Megadrive was called the Genesis in the US because of copyright but every time she said it I died a little inside lmao
@@figureheaduk really good points but who can say haha
@@gavintjames1989 also maybe the professional reviews could have been taken from (mostly) American sources hence the "Genesis" references?
@@figureheaduk Wait, hold up, how else would one refer to the ZX Spectrum except by saying "Zee Ex Spectrum"? That's like saying "refer to the Genesis as 'gen-ih-sis.'"
EDIT: Nevermind, I just remembered those wacky Brits typically pronounce the letter Z as "zed."
Golden Axe II was released that same year.
Karen joke was epic🤣
91 was a great year, the fuck are yall smoking over there.
I beg to disagree, I feel like EVERY one of these lists begins with a caveat about how #10 isn’t really that bad
I get some strong Star Fox (SNES) vibes from Galaxy Force II; might just be because both are rail shooters..?
Nice list, but why just the consoles & PC games. There was still quite a bit of crap floating around on the 8 bit & 16 bit home micros that was possibly far worse than some of these games. Cisco Heat on C64 for example.
Alien storm is amazing. Played hours both my brother .
Gameboy Double Dragon 2 is Renegade then?
Part of the Renegade series yes. Or to be more specific, the Japanese Kunio-kun series.
These games generally arent terrible. Again, the magazines that rated games this far back were very biased and were going on peoples opinions who werent really that experienced.
Thank goodness King Of The Monsters (Neo Geo) isn't on this list.
