In this video, I showed the process of installing a SF-HC25G torch height controller (THC) system. This system is initially designed for the StarFire stand-alone CNC controller, not Mach3. But with the flexibility offered by Mach3 (customization through macro script), in the end, I was able to make this system works almost natively on my home-built CNC plasma cutting table.
This THC system perform exceptionally well (very comparable with more expensive ones), especially for its price. I was able to cut very thin and warped sheet metals (0.5mm thickness) at 6000mm/minute.
Because the system wasn't designed for Mach3 and the lack of instructions, I spent a lot of time debugging things:
- Writing macro scripts to make the THC system communicate with Mach3 Controller board.
- The choices of brushed geared motor and the lead on the leadscrew or ballscrew are very important. The brushed geared motor must have high torque and reasonable rated RPM to move the Z axis in the range of: 1200mm/minute to 2000mm/minute.

That speed is only for cutting art, not very precise to use for brackets. But I'm happy with the machine.

Great job, as I mentioned in a previous video using normally open on a limit switch can be dangerous, if one of the wires comes off or is cut without you noticing you can crash the machine as no alarm is sent, but by using normally closed if a wire comes off or is cut you will get an alarm and the machine will stop.
I am amazed at some of your builds, you make things look so easy, I`m slowly working through all your videos, thanks for sharing.

Then all you need is courage then since I already have a whole series of videos about building this table including the design (I shared on GrabCAD) and even how to setting up CAM for some part in fusion 360 (And you can cut all the parts using your 3018 CNC).
You definitely should build one but not in your basement tho. The smoke and spark will make you build a new house very soon.

The pro version seems much sturdier IMHO. So you have a special facility for your plasma cutting table I suppose. Un-employed and have 3 bosses. I don't have a dedicated facility for my machines, only my garage. If you watch my videos about this plasma cutting table, you will see that I roll it out to the edge of my garage door. I try my best to keep our roof. I'm Kinh, like most other Vietnamese.

Hello I'm having issues with the voltage I get from the BOB from "OUT 1" to trigger the plasma relay, I only get around 2.6v, not enough to trigger the relay which is 5v

Some of Minh's posts as a matter of fact, require more than any average guy's technical knowledge. Despite the details and explanations he provides, that could narrow his audience. I don't plan to build this wonderful stuff in the next future but I need to watch it more than once to get sure that I understand the big picture. Lost in the details sometimes... Admirable achievement though. Hope Minh will give an idea of the total price of his cutting table. Mach3 seems to be a great software. Thank you Minh!
Nahh, if you're into machining you already have more than average guy's technical knowledge to skim out what you need. I showed the whole process but there's only few things people really need to do to make this work. And that's also what I will put in the guide. I built this machine to last long time, but I have an idea to convert a cheap laser engraver set into this type of CNC plasma cutting table. That probably will lower the cost by a few hundreds of $.

Why did you ditch the THC that you were using previously?
At that time, I had the fake Tb6600 motor driver on the Z axis and I couldn't finish any cut. The torch kept drifting away from the sheet metals. I thought It was the THC but I found out later that the motor driver was very bad, it cause the stepper motor to lose steps, drifting, etc. So, I think that the problem was not the THC, it was the motor driver. But I already sold that system so I had to buy this new one.

Hello my dear friend. I installed and connected everything according to your instructions, but I can't execute the m03 and m05 plasma on and off macros. Could you show me what is written in your macros.
I have a question sir. I have the same voltage divider board as you. Although I am hooking it up to a centroid acorn THC. With a victor cutmaster 42 by thermal dynamics which has no Cnc port. So I need a voltage divider board. The Centroid THC wants a input that is 50:1.
I see on your write up (which is amazing and will contribute to your channel with a cash donation!) that you input the arc voltage to pin headers J2. Then run 220v to the pin headers J3. Now my Thc wants to see 50:1 voltage so would I hook up to the J6 header to get 50:1 voltage?
Next the trigger is hooked to j4 my thc schematic calls for the trigger to be hooked to the centroid acorn one of the 8 relays on the relay board. Would I go to the ST to 24- on header J7? Or just go from the trigger to the acorn relay?

I figured it out with your write up instructions. I had apply 24 volts to the board then I had to jump ST to 24- that gives me 50:1 out of ST and V to my acorn plasma board. I would like to figure out how to bypass the 24v side to get 50:1 without applying the 24volts. The header that’s labeled 50:1 gives no output that I can tell.

Hi Minh, how is it going so far with your THC installed?. I am trying to do the same following your video. I got a dc geared motor 100 RPM. It should work I guess because that plasmas with that THC system come with a motor 180RPM. i will probably increase RPM with pulleys and will see how it goes though i prefer the mechanic THC i built following your videos. Thanks a lot for posting your videos.
I read on your manual, it is recommended to use Multi-Channel relay module, if we use 24vdc relay 8 chanel on usb mach3 ST5100, is it OK ?
I'm not sure what's output level on the stb5100. It probably will but I can't be sure since I don't have the board and relay module to test.

Hi Minh, i have set up the same THC following your Installation guide downloaded from the link in the description. All is working ok except Mach 3 is not waiting for the Ark-ok signal before it starts moving the x y around, any ideas?
Make sure you click on "THC on" button to make mach3 wait for the arc OK signal

Grbl is not supporting THC function and also not very easy to customize. You can connect this type THC to a Grbl board only if you understand how to change the source code. The easiest way is to get a cheap mach3 board.

Really great content, but what happens if my Z axis has a stepper motor? Is there a way to use that motor with another THC controller? Anyway thumps up for such great videos and documentation.
If you really want to stick with that stepper motor, maybe use the THC system from Robot 3T: THC-3t02, step/dir mode. I have a video about installing that system.

AUTO is not active. It cuts without AUTO.

Do you get electrical noise? Have you tried opto isolators for the cables? Great video btw:)
This THC system is actually a very good nose insulator between the plasma cutter and the controller board. No problem with interference.

Hi again Minh, i have everything running good, last issue i have is..... is there any way to stop the torch diving to the sheet metal at the end of each cut? (i see it does this in your video also) Has this been an issue for you?
I think that because at the end of each cut, the torch is cutting empty like it is very far from the metal and the thc move it down to look for the sheet metal. I might need to modify the post processor a bit to disable the THC at the end of cut end move the torch up

It should work. Only need to make sure that you can follow the instructions to connect the THC to the controller.

I'm working with a viewer to install a Sf-hc30a3 on his system which is similar to yours. My solution of using a relay module as I showed in the installation guide will make these type of THC compatible with any mach3 breakout board. If you wait one or 2 weeks, I might be able to have a guide to help you install your THC on your machine.

Hello, is it necessary to have 220v? my machine currently works with 110v
I'm not sure because I had 220v and just used it. I've never tried 110v.
I have installed this unit as per your pdf instructions and used the macros for Mah3 and when I use the Up & Down keys I see the Output 3 & 4 lights up in Mach3 diagnostic screen, but I get no movement. I have tested and I have power on the 24V =&- pins and when I try and manually move the Z axis by applying the negative to either Up or Down I still get nothing. So I am stumped. I know my Z axis works because it moves when I put power direct to the motor wires, and BTW no power output to motor output pins on the THC mainboard. The board is getting power and the display works fine, so wonder if there is a fault with the board or is it my Mach3 setup ??
Use multimeter to measure voltage on the output pins to make sure you have output signal. If you try to move the axis using using the pins on the thc boards but and doesn't move, then fix that problem fist. I cannot really do diagnostic through internet
@@minhsmancave9448 Minh I measured the outputs on the BOB board and there is no volts on any of the four output pins. I measured the THC Control Inputs have 24V on all pins except for 0- OK pin which has 12V. So I am guessing that the BOB is either faulty or I have it configured wrong in Mach 3, but I followed your steps to the letter, and both X & Y axis works they should. So any suggestions. Thanks :)

@@minhsmancave9448 I did some digging and someone on CNCzone said that the BOB needed 24v to activate the outputs, so I changed that and now the led's on the relays turn on when U & D keys are used and there is voltage on the BOB output pins. I will test it out tomorrow when I connect it to the CNC. Thanks
Minh, this is driving me crazy and I am not sure what is at fault, the RnRmotion BOB or the THC unit.
I changed the input voltage to the BOB to 24V as per recommendations and that improved the outputs, and now I have -11.5V on output 3 & 4 when active, and the relays are turning on when activated by the Up /down macros as they should.
Problem now is that I am still not getting Z motor outputs through the THC Motor pins + - when the Up/Down Macros run through the keyboard commands.
I have tried directly shorting the 24V - and + to the Up/Down ports on the THC control outputs as per your video and still nothing.
But, if I connect the Z motor + - leads directly to the THC control outputs and use the keyboard commands, the motor spins in one direction, and I have to swap polarity to get it to move in the opposite direction.
So I am stumped as to which is not working correctly. Is it the BOB board, or is it the THC control board.
The RNRmotion clones are known for being flakey and pretty poor quality, but the rest seems to be working fine like the X,Y axis etc.
I have read the THC manual fully and it gives very little info, least of all problems.
So before I waste more money I have to work out what to go after first, better BOB maybe ??

Parfois c'est un erreur d'un système qui serve des centaines de millions. Peut être désactiver les notifications et ré-activer fixera le problème (si tu veux encore recevoir les alertes de ma chaîne bien sûr). Je pense que montrer le résultats parfois retiendra l'attention des viewers car la vidéo est longue et "nerdy".

Hi there, just wanna ask about thc on your plasma cut, mine use eagle usb breakoutboard, thc proma sd, not working well after several cut, the BOB board gone crazy even i have grounding earthing, the suspect is after install thc the problem happen which i use raw voltage on thc, my plasma cut have no voltage divider (just my suspect)
It's hard for me to say because I don't have those components. But in my experience, there's always a voltage divider somewhere. It's impossible for the Thc to use the raw cutting voltage since it's so high that will burn any electronic components. The voltage divider on a connector on the plasma cutter, if not, you will need a separate board or check if it's integrated in your proma.
@@minhsmancave9448 I'll try my last attempt with custom voltage divider to prevent the raw voltage shoot in to my bob board... other than that do you have a suggestion?
Usually the voltage will enter your THC not your bob, if something got burned, it should be the THC. Better get a voltage divider board anyway.
Hi there, finally found the problem, with direct voltage from plasma cut to thc proma sd, make my BOB board go crazy, after i make a voltage divider which i don't even know the ratio, and with 98v DC the reading output became 0.75-1VDC to THC, the problem became clear, the machine cut with no problem at all... I have ordered a SF-HC25G and want to use it as stand alone on an X Y machine (I disconnected the Z) I have the English manual, the same one I sent you last week, but there is no information about using it as stand alone that I can see. I have spoken with the seller and he has contacted the manufacturer, but there is nothing available I have been told.
I ordered it with a lifter that has a movement of 1800mm/min. I hope I can get this working or it wont be cheap at $480AUD (THC + lifter + freight)
I have found a problem that I don't know what it means or how to solve it.
I followed your instructions fully, using the same Mach3 board, same relay board, same THC system. I added the supplied files that you created and when I did that I get a message from Mach3 after pressing the rest button on start-up that says "Two m codes used by the same modal group, Block = M80 M108 M800"
What should I do?

I've never heard of this complain and can't be sure about the reason. Have you tried another monitor to see it also beep? It might due to the software of the monitor sending a warning when the signal if affected by the high frequency interference created by the torch when cutting.

Hi, How does this THC behave with respect to your mechanical THC?
It’s not bad at all once you worked out the parameters for each thickness of sheet metal to cut. The mechanical thc also works fine and need less trial, but the stock will need to clamped tightly to the bed to avoid moving, it can also only work on fairly flat stock, not too much bending

Doesn't matter which board, as long as it run on mach3, the installation will be the same. The Thc setup cost about $130 on AliExpress.
hi Minh, thank to your great video i achieved my plasma CNC up and running i bought same THC than yours and downloaded your files and my machine is cutting, but i have a couple of troubles maybe you could help me to solve, first is that sometimes plasma don't finish cuts randomly, (maybe reducing Feedrate) and the second and the most important is that i tried to cut over a warped sheet of metal 16 GA and i noticed that THC won't follow the waves of the sheet, the torch hits the metal sheet and just keeps cutting by dragging the tip over, i´m new at plasma cutting and i'll appreciate if you or someone could help me to solve this. Thanks in advance.
For the first problem I'm not sure. But for the 2nd one that the torch doesn't follow the warp, I think that the Thc didn't receive the auto signal from the controller board (for the Thc to work, you have to turn on the Thc in Mach3 by clicking on the Thc on button). If you hav done this and the same thing still happen, make sure that you tune the Thc the way I did by lifting one end of the metal and tune the sensitivity, speed, etc until the torch can follow the slope (better cut from higher end to lower end so the torch doesn't crash into the sheet metal)

I have same model on my mach3 DIY plasma setup with chinise Herocut cut55x which I have been trying to figure out as best as I can connected as same as yours and also as the manual recomands THC seem to either dive down and hit the workpiece or retract far up from workpiece and can't get it to work, I dint know what seem to be the problem I tried to figure out for almost for 15 days with no luck

Nếu bạn chưa mua máy cắt plasma thì mình khuyên bạn nên mua loại máy blowback pilot arc, không nên mua loại HF (high frequency) pilot arc. HF pilot arc rất nhiễu. Nếu dùng HF thì nên mua mach3 board kết nối ethernet. Nếu dùng blowback thì loại board nào cũng được. Không nên mua board ethernet của Trung Quốc vì các loại này không hoàn toàn tương thích với mach3 và hay bị lỗi. Nếu bạn mua được blowback pilot arc thì bạn có thể mua usb mach3 board, loại màu đỏ (RnRmotion)
